Democratic Debate, Thread One

In the wake of a major terrorist attack
Politics • Views: 52,372

The terror attacks in Paris are casting a dark shadow over this debate, and will certainly be a topic of discussion. This debate will include Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley; Jim Webb bailed out after the last one.

That moment of silence was an exceedingly short moment. Unlike Borat asking for 10 minute silence for the Tishnik Massacre.

Bernie should have spent more time on the Paris Massacre and not launched immediately into GUILLOTINES FOR THE 1%

Bernie that was a fast pivot.

According to RWNJs, Hillary just won the debate by mentioning the word jihadist. Now let’s see if she can win it in reality.

Thing is, as I understand it, 8 people conducted the Paris operation. Eight. Stopping that kind of thing is about good intelligence and police work, not military action.

The more I see from Bernie the more I think where he would be most vulnerable would be FP not his economic views. It’s just not an issue that he’s done a lot of work on IMO.

Hillary needs to keep making it very clear that as SecState, she was left playing the hand that W dealt for her. And the other Democrats need to do it, too.

I was going to propose some kind of drinking game for tonight’s debate, but the mere thought of levity at this time kinda turns my stomach.

My best hope is that they provide some kind of voice of sanity amidst all the reactionary, bloodthirsty screeching from the howler monkeys on the right wing, and that America, when it comes to its sense in a few months, remembers who the grownups are in the room.

Yeah, I know. As a people, we seem to have the long-term memory capacity of hummingbirds on crack. But a guy can hope, can’t he?

32
Brian J.  Nov 14, 2015 • 6:14:02pm

I’ll say that for Bernie. He’s sticking to his guns, so to speak. He’s actually got a reasonable explanation for why climate change is more important than terrorism, at least for people in the market for reasonable explanations.

Hillary Clinton is currently demonstrating the problem with giving each candidate only 60 seconds to speak- distilling 1400 years of history into a soundbite leads only to bad policy.

Bernie, what if they say they don wanna put boots on the ground? Seriously.

Khal Wimpo  Nov 14, 2015 • 6:19:37pm

Somewhere along the line, somebody needs to trace the history of this Islamic extremism to its roots back in the 70s, when Kissinger, in one of his fits of “realpolitik” looked around to counter what he & Nixon saw as the rising spectre of Soviet influence in the Middle East.

Who to counter the atheist Soviets? Hmmm. Bribing people like the Shah was expensive.

Atheiest, you say? Are there are any religious people running around Saudi Arabia we could hitch our wagon to?

The wahhabis? Really? And they hate the atheists? Cool. Let’s do dirty deals with them, then, and if they get out of hand later, we’ll deal with that after we have the Soviets contained.

Fast-forward 40 years. Hilarity ensues.

Unfortunately, that’s something I see his supporters love to harp on. She fucked up. Honestly, the question should be about what we can learn from the mistakes of Iraq rather than getting into a dick waving match about who was right then and who was wrong. If you’re still arguing Iraq was necessary than we got a problem but if we came to the conclusion it was a mistake at different points, that’s not a big isuse to me.

jaunte  Nov 14, 2015 • 6:20:23pm

2014:

“The impacts of climate change may cause instability in other countries by impairing access to food and water, damaging infrastructure, spreading disease, uprooting and displacing large numbers of people, compelling mass migration, interrupting commercial activity, or restricting electricity availability,” the Pentagon writes. “These developments could undermine already-fragile governments that are unable to respond effectively or challenge currently-stable governments, as well as increasing competition and tension between countries vying for limited resources. These gaps in governance can create an avenue for extremist ideologies and conditions that foster terrorism.”

Can you say it with me “Terrorist using Islam as a cover” Terrorist kill more Muslims then anyone else.

Islam is not just a cover, though. It is a repugnant and Medieval interpretation of Islam that provides motivation for change and an explanation for an unjust and inequitable world. The terrorists are not just window shopping for a cover. They are shopping for meaning and a lens to see and interpret the world, including the rise of liberal Western democracies and the failure of the former Caliphate in the Ottoman Empire.

Ultra orthodoxy has been the go to explanation in all of the Abrahamic faiths for people who feel victimized by globalization, mass media and (this cannot be over emphasized) lack of respect.

The lack of a central interpretive authority in Islam makes this sort of thing easy to grow, since adherents to Daesh can just as easily call everyone else apostate (and they do) when other Muslims say that Daesh is insane and evil.

Supposedly.

But I’m not sure this debate so far is really speaking to the concerns of the local populace. Sure, they are at a college and the college crowd will cheer for this or that.

I suspect most Iowans, even Democrats (and I know a few), simply want to feel safe at home and believe they will have a job tomorrow.

Bernie is the result of many decades of New Englanders doing education for everyone and on the whole being responsible.

But in some parts of the country the only thing that matters is Je$u$ and whats on the smorgasbord at the local casino.

Syria’s Assad blames France for Paris terror attacks

14 November 2015 - 20H45
Syria’s Assad blames France as Arab world condemns Paris attacks
france24.com

BEIRUT (AFP) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad sought to exploit the Paris attacks for political gain Friday, calling on France to change policies that he says have contributed to the “spread of terrorism”.

Across the Middle East, most Arab governments expressed shock and anger at the gun and bomb assault that left at least 128 people dead.

The Islamic State group, a jihadist organisation that has declared a self-styled “caliphate” across parts of Iraq and Syria, said it carried out the attacks.

In a meeting with a delegation of French lawmakers in Damascus the day after the attack, Assad said France’s “mistaken policies… have contributed to the spread of terrorism”.

Of all the unmitigated gall.

re: #371 stpaulbear

I have many relatives back there.

My point is that agriculture is the major industry of the state and really what drives their entire economy. The inability of all 3 of the candidates tonight to acknowledge the local issues I think is telling. All 3 candidates sounded to me like they are just playing to their bases none of which really are in Iowa.

So yes, I’m a snob, but at least I know what really drives the daily lives of Iowans. But it is hard to speak to the local issues when there are many more Democratic delegates up for grabs in Florida or California or Maryland.

None of the candidates tonight said anything that addresses directly the small business people known as farmers (such as free trade, which at least gets brought up in the GOP debate).

Currently Iowa has very low unemployment, high graduation rates, relatively low crime rates. So the favorite topics of Democratic politicians in large urban areas aren’t really going to be such hot topic, save for maybe health care costs (which were talked about tonight.)

So yes, I’ve become an urban snob in my old age, but I started out life in the middle of fly-over country and I think I can be confident in saying that there is a real gap between the average voter in rural America and the 3 candidates we saw tonight.

Yeah most high school kids aren’t unemployed. And frankly this notion that we need a lower minimum wage so companies can still higher teen workers is crap too. Teens need income too. In fact, I’d say many teens who are working a job are doing so to help their family’s situation out.

I’m the reverse case: raised in metro New York and then moved to fly-over land after college. I agree with your summation. The three Dems are all urban-oriented, where their voting base is for the most part. But to capture the hearts and minds of the rural voters, they’re going to have to admit the rural voters are there and address their concerns. Sarah Palin was a nasty, vindictive candidate, but her remarks about “real America” resonated with people who view urban Democrats as snooty, ivory-tower types who consider country folks as ignorant rubes and hicks. Whoever wins the nomination is going to have to dispel those feelings somehow, because the GOP winner is for sure going to pull a Palin and tell those rural voters the Democrat hates them.

There was another disaster in France today. Accident this time.

On 14 November 2015, a TGV train derailed in Eckwersheim, Alsace, France, during pre-opening testing on the second phase of the LGV Est high-speed rail line. At least ten people were killed after the train derailed, caught fire and plunged into the Marne-Rhine Canal.[1][2] Another 32 people were injured, 12 of them in a serious condition, and a further five remain unaccounted for.

10 were killed.
