Donald Trump Campaign Paid Breitbart “News” Editor

Paid “news”
Politics • Views: 60,218

Many people (including yours truly) have questioned the incredibly friendly — one might almost say sycophantic — relationship between the Donald Trump campaign and Breitbart “News,” but today Rosie Gray at Buzzfeed reports that at least one Breitbart editor has actually been paid by the Trump campaign for “consulting work.”

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump’s campaign paid Breitbart News national security editor Sebastian Gorka $8,000 for “policy consulting” last year, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

The filings show that the payment to Gorka was made in October.

[…]

Gorka has been repeatedly identified on Breitbart as Breitbart’s national security editor, with an appearance on Monday on Breitbart chairman Steve Bannon’s satellite radio show being the most recent example. Gorka has also written frequently for the site, though not since December.

Earlier this year, Gorka was reportedly caught trying to go through security at Reagan Airport in February with a handgun.

In the right wing media world, this kind of cozy relationship between candidates for office and the people reporting on them is not unusual at all.

Right wing outlets wont make hay of that - coordinating news, efforts, etc., but if Hillary gets favorable news or the DNC acts with inuring benefit to Hillary, you can be sure that they’ll all be hollering that there’s a conspiracy/coordination, and that the FEC better investigate.

This is how Shaun King responded to having it pointed out that two entire paragraphs were copied word for word from The Daily Beats without attribution:

It’s as if he’s trying to look guilty. If this was an honest mistake, why wouldn’t he simply apologize and say it was being corrected? Instead he attacked one of the people who pointed it out and accused him of lying.

Direct quotes require, oh i dunno, quotations marks. Also attributions such as: “Joe Shmoe, writing for the Daily Blow, said this: “direct quote in quotes”

Yeah, I was gonna say something about his reputation being dragged through the mud, but at 6 feet under, the soil is pretty firm.

I’ll just point out that the New York Daily News’s reputation would also be damaged if one of their writers committed plagiarism. This doesn’t smell right to me.

re: #3 Charles Johnson

I stated in prior thread that the Daily News should look at his other writings, but it appears that people have already begun doing that - finding similar problems.

That he quoted entire paragraphs is bad enough; it’s poor form. There was no reason he couldn’t rewrite it to include the relevant quotes. Then he blames the “editor” for taking out quotes. Well, the editor is a gatekeeper on what gets published, and they screwed up too - both in removing quotes that should have been in there - with attribution and by not asking for a rewrite to eliminate need for the block quote.

He decides to attack people for pointing out that the published material shows a block of text lifted entirely from another source and no attribution.

That’s the problem.

But contriteness isn’t part of Shaun’s vocabulary.

Some snowboarders sued Alta Ski Area for not allowing snowboarders to use their facilities on 14th Amendment grounds, as the ski area is on federal land. No dice, Alta is still a private business, the buildings and chairlifts are subject to Alta’s whim.

Same thing happened at Taos, NM, which allows snowboarders now; certain geezers that sit on Alta’s board have to die before snowboarders can be welcomed to Alta. Regressive antiquated attitudes die hard.

I didn’t take a ton of photos on vacation, but we did go by KSC and enjoyed the exhibits there. (Photo conditions were a little challenging, but I think this one came out okay for not having a tripod.)

Again with the “maths”

Bernie’s campaign claims they made 3 million calls in NY over the weekend.

This morning, they sent out this request:

URGENT: we need 7,500 of you on the phones for one hour today to make sure Bernie supporters in New York get out to vote. If 7,500 of you get on the phones for at least one hour, we’ll put another million calls into New York when it counts the most - on primary day.

According to the “math,” in order to make 1 million calls with 7500 people calling for an hour, they’d each have to make 133+ calls per hour.

Add in the behavior of the whole Republican party during the Obama administration and I would shy away from ever hanging that on a Clinton.

Bill and Hillary Clinton have had an unprecedented (well, unprecedented till Obama came along) shitload of lying propaganda dumped on them for 25 fucking years, from the right (of course) and the left (as closet Republicans). And yet—Bill Clinton is an enormously popular President, who even after being impeached could have easily been reelected if he could have run.

Could it be that the left and right fringe are not as numerous as they’re given credit for?

Fuck this shit:

Oscar-winner and Bernie Sanders surrogate Susan Sarandon has already made plenty of waves this election season by saying she’s not sure she will even vote if her candidate isn’t nominated, even if that means handing Donald Trump the presidency. On Tuesday’s edition of The View, Sarandon expanded her attack radius to include not just Hillary Clinton, but daughter Chelsea Clinton as well. Along the way, Sarandon also reduced Hillary Clinton’s accomplishments to being “married to someone who was a president,” predicted that there will not be woman president for at least a generation, and that Bernie Sanders’ quest to get money out of politics will fail:

Let’s just take the training wheels off, why don’t we? Go back to the good ol’ days when corporate power was at its height and companies literally owned their employees. You’ll live in company-owned housing, go to company-owned schools and clinics (if you’re lucky), and take whatever the company decides to give you out of its enormous profits. Posted for your entertainment consideration:

From Rod Dreher earlier today…

I’m interested here in hearing from conservatives — social and otherwise — who are re-thinking their relationship to the GOP and to the conservative movement in light of these huge social changes. As most of you know, I’m working on my Benedict Option book, which will be my take on what we should do now. I won’t belabor that again. Please, let the rest of us hear from you, even if you don’t really know what to think or what to do.

UPDATE: Gang, I’m serious about not publishing comments from liberals. I’m not trying to be mean; I’m simply trying to keep the thread on target. Please don’t waste your time.

Then from this afternoon….

I am often complimented by readers on both the left and the right for the quality of the comments section on this blog. This is first and foremost a tribute to you commenters. But it is also the result of years of very patient, usually unpleasant labor on my part. When I began blogging at Beliefnet in 2006, I was shocked by the viciousness of so many of the comments, but I didn’t have the ability to delete the bad ones. Before too long, Beliefnet let me have administrator’s privileges over my own blog, and I began to weed them out, deleting bad comments and, when possible, blocking access to the blog. It took a long, long time, but I finally got it under control.
…..So what do you think? Is this comments section worth it? I don’t read any comments section but the one on my own blog, because they are very much not worth it.

The comment section that follows is a gloriously unironic, hairy palmed orgy of self gratification.

The idea that religion and politics are two separate and distinct things is a relatively recent development in human history. We’ve had millennia of them being the same, and in some parts of the world, they still are the same. You’re probably right though about Jesus being more interested in helping the less fortunate than in who is getting married, since he said to leave your wife and children if you wanted to be his disciple.

And here it’s good to remember that when we say ‘the govt’, we really mean ‘our society’, because we’re self-governing. Conservatives always like to pretend government is some alien thing imposed from the outside, rather than deriving its authority from the just consent of the governed.

Actually, we all pay. A large part of my objection was from Sen. Warren’s terminology: Raising the minimum wage isn’t ‘giving people a raise’. It’s forcing businesses to raise wages, without compensating by lower taxes or reducing regulation. When done in an across the board manner (as it normally has to be done) it causes job losses.

And the $15/hr minimum some places are putting into effect really scares me. It threatens commissioned salespeople like myself with either being priced out of jobs or having our commission structure gutted to make room for the higher wages. that makes employers less forgiving of a slow month since they still have to pay you the same thing.

I fear Sen. Warren’s ideas will do me harm. Those taking other positions are invited to reply. I’ll read the replies when I return. BBL

To add irony to the wages debate, even the Federal Government has a pay system that DOES NOT pay time and a half. It’s a system called Administratively Determined (AD) and is used for hiring temporary employees during emergencies. The pay rate is based on the skill being hired. The pay is straight time for all hours worked…as much as 16 hours per day on firefighting assignments. Along with the pay rate the Government is required to pay for all meals, lodging, and travel expenses. The Government “claims” the established rates include a factor for hours over 8 hours per day but that’s open for debate.

“…While some employers cut jobs in response to a minimum-wage increase, others find that a higher wage floor enables them to fill their vacancies and reduce turnover, which raises employment, even though it eats into their profits. The net effect of all this, as has been found in most studies of the minimum wage over the last quarter-century, is that when it is set at a moderate level, the minimum wage has little or no effect on employment.”

You’re right in that when businesses don’t pay workers what they actually need to live on, we all end up paying for that.

More workers with more money to buy is a good thing for everyone. People living at or near the poverty line typically aren’t saving money. They can’t afford to. More money in their paychecks is going to result in more money entering the economy and possibly the chance they might be able to save a small amount to cover emergencies.

Also, you know, concepts of human dignity and people being able to earn a living is nice too. I would think you would respect that, as a fan of the party that advocates “personal responsibility.”

Umm…why should reducing regulation be in the discussion of appropriate compensation for employees? Like, if Walmart pays 15 bucks an hour, they don’t have to stop mixing electricity and water?

But anyways, seriously Dark, US conservatives are dead wrong on the economy and have been for easily 50 years now. In places like Kansas and Louisiana, it’s obvious looking just the budget shortfalls. In Texas, look at all the dead people from factory explosions. I don’t have a problem with being paid a salary, actually. The predictable income helps budgeting, and I’m paid a fair rate for my services. My problem is the corporate cultures that think it is okay to force salaried workers to work unpaid overtime. I think it should be salary plus overtime, and that would get us back to the point of a salaried wage in the first place - predictable steady expense for business, predictable steady income for workers, and an agreement on the workload for which the compensation is paid.

Businesses in this country have gotten far more than their fair share of less taxes and regulation.

At this point, fuck them. It’s time for the people to get some of that gubmint love, and you and yours can fucking deal with it.

Also, to compensate a business for what it pays an employee sounds like the government is paying the employee.

re: #188 Dark_Falcon

Actually, we all pay. A large part of my objection was from Sen. Warren’s terminology: Raising the minimum wage isn’t ‘giving people a raise’. It’s forcing businesses to raise wages, without compensating by lower taxes or reducing regulation. When done in an across the board manner (as it normally has to be done) it causes job losses.

It would have the advantage of reducing welfare rolls because if people were actually paid a living wage they wouldn’t need supplemental income in the form of welfare. It also means people have more money to spend, which means they have more money to buy things, which means businesses end up making more money (no really, that’s how capitalism works). Furthermore, “reducing regulation” is a stupid non sequitor, unless you can provide specific regulations that should be revised or repealed you’re basically saying “LOUD NOISES”.

And the $15/hr minimum some places are putting into effect really scares me. It threatens commissioned salespeople like myself with either being priced out of jobs or having our commission structure gutted to make room for the higher wages. that makes employers less forgiving of a slow month since they still have to pay you the same thing.

Image: wikipedian_protester.png (also, see point above about more people spending more money)

I fear Sen. Warren’s ideas will do me harm. Those taking other positions are invited to reply. I’ll read the replies when I return. BBL

Not to be incredibly fortune cookie snarky, but fear is often the result of lack of knowledge.

The news in Houston has been continuous today reporting on the area flooding. There have been 7 confirmed deaths, AFAIK all of them drowning in cars. The news casters say repeatedly that the deaths were the result of “mistakenly” driving through high water.

There’s this one case though that was reported early yesterday morning of a young woman who blew past not only barracades but a flood control guy who was preventing people from driving into a flooded underpass. It wasn’t a “mistake” but a deliberate, intended “fuck you I’m going anyway” move. As her car disappeared under 10+ feet of water, the flood control guy tried desperately to get to her, but couldn’t. Just a few hours ago, that underpass was drained enough that her body could be retrieved.

Dunno why, but the story keeps reminding me of Sanders and Trump supporters.

Dreher is inspiring all kinds of fun today with Roy Edroso over at alicublog, who has been mocking him for years. On top of another one of his daily 1000 plus word diatribes on transsexual wimminz destroying civilization and bathrooms, Rod had this to offer on an essay on middle class financial insecurity over at The Atlantic. Quoth Rod:

He felt that he deserved the life he had, and could not choose otherwise without betraying himself. I think this must be an extraordinary thing, in terms of history: people who spend recklessly to give themselves the lives they think they deserve. If you think about it, though, our culture, which valorizes Authenticity, encourages this.

If for some reason the market for my writing dried up, and I had to take a job doing something else to support my family, I would do it. But I would probably resist it for as long as I could, because it’s very hard for me to separate my sense of identity from my writing. Still, bills have to be paid, and I would hope that I didn’t hold out for long.

Edroso chimes in…

Now, I ask you — who could read that and not imagine Rod, at some future date when the Benedict Option racket has collapsed and nobody wants 5,000-word essays on how transsexuals are destroying the Republic anymore, in a variety of alternative professions:

Customer: Hello, I’d like to order a cake please.
Dreher: Would this cake solemnify a homosexual union?
Customer: It’s for a gay marriage anniversary party, but we don’t want anything written on the cake.
Dreher: Hmm, that one’s on the line. Do you mind praying over it with me?
Boss: DREHER YOU’RE FIRED

Customer: Hello, three tickets for Zootopia please.
Dreher: Are you bringing children to this?
Customer: Yes. It’s rated G.
Dreher: But it promotes anthropomorphic miscgenation. Have you read Robert Putnam? Well, I mean Steve Sailer on Robert Putnam — Putnam doesn’t know the importance of his own words.
Boss: DREHER YOU’RE FIRED

Furniture mover: Why you sit down? Only on job fifteen minutes.
Dreher: I have mononucleosis. I have to rest frequently.
Furniture mover: Why you take job you sick?
Dreher: Because that’s what a man does! You think they’ll mind if I just lay down on the sofa that’s still in the truck?
Furniture: Boss catch you he fire.
Dreher: Well, of course — I’m white.
Boss: DREHER YOU FIRE

Must read

I’ve been studying the history of American conservatism full time since 1997—almost 20 years now. I’ve read almost every major book on the subject. I thought I knew what I was talking about. Then along comes Donald Trump to scramble the whole goddamned script.

Now, historians must begin to consider alternate genealogies of the American right: lineages for the orange-haired monster that no one saw coming. Our received narrative of the movement encompassed by Barry Goldwater and William F. Buckley and Strom Thurmond and Milton Friedman and Ronald Reagan just doesn’t cut it any longer. I’ve done my best to begin the work—thinking through, for instance, Trumpism’s connection to fascism, a political tradition not heretofore considered all that relevant in the American context. Other bodies, however, are buried closer to home.

Cool, thank you! Considered tweeting something with a photo earlier, and saw that i was shorter by almost 20 characters so wondered about that (still a Twitter n00b i’m afraid)…

So are you gonna link to your Twitter handle in your LGF profile, or do we have to try to find you a la “Where’s Waldo?”

Is San Francisco forcing people to use the public “pissoir”?

“The open-air urination hole violates the privacy of those who need to use the restroom but would be required to expose their bodies and suffer the shame and degradation of urinating in public view,” the lawsuit states. “Seclusion in bodily evacuation is a societal norm and constitutes one of the most basic expectations for privacy.”
It also calls the pissoir “indecent,” “offensive to the senses,” “grossly unseemly” and “offensive to manners and morals.”

On a cathedral piss deflector, for a guess. San Francisco has to make do with civic piss facilities because they lack proper European architectural finesse.

Doesn’t matter all that much to me. If folks want to boycott Whole Foods, that’s their decision to make. Their CEO is a libertarian ass anyway.

I can think of any number of explanations of why one cake might have a seal on the bottom and another might have a barcode on the top.

A Whole Food store just opened in St. Paul in a busy neighborhood (Selby and Snelling) with an undersized customer parking lot. Whole Foods told their employees to go park in the few street parking places in the residential neighborhood around the store. One of the neighbors who’s really pissed about losing her ability to park is a community reporter in a popular local paper and she’s not keeping quiet about it. More power to her.

Thanks!

Chucky loves going to the vet.

Here she is, waiting to be seen by her oncologist this afternoon. Staples came out cleanly and she made some new friends, as always. She said she appreciates all the thoughts that were sent her way.
