Sheila E: saying goodbye to Prince ‘the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do’

Since the drummer has organized all-star concerts for charity, she has been charged with organizing the public musical celebration for Prince.

Although the planning is in the preliminary stages, she’s already looking at the place in Minneapolis with the most purple seats — U.S. Bank Stadium.

It doesn’t open until July 23.

“I know that,” she said, smiling just a little bit.

I see they sold out the Metallica/Avenged Sevenfold show.

GW just started a competition where any order $85 and above gives you a chance to win $3500 worth of free merchandise.

I was just about to order something small. Looks like I’ll put it off for a week, then upgrade my order to the minimum for the contest.

I’ve been having to correct my kids. I tell them:
1. I was around when the format came out, and it’s been called that for nearly 30 years.
2. gif is treated as a word, and there’s an i after the g.

How Trump Decides Who Deserves Loyalty — And Who Gets Fired

…One of Trump’s closest friends early in his career was Roy Cohn. An infamous attorney and ex-aide to Joseph McCarthy, Cohn served as a mentor to Trump through much of the ’70s and ’80s…. Trump held up his end of the friendship as well: When Cohn was facing disbarment in the mid-’80s, Trump testified on his friend’s behalf as a character witness. For a while, according to Vanity Fair, the two men spoke ‘15 or 20 times a day.’

Then Trump found out Cohn was HIV-positive.

He moved swiftly to cut ties with his mentor, seeking out new attorneys and transferring his legal business to them. The sudden rejection stunned Cohn. Commenting on the betrayal, Cohn reportedly said, ‘Donald pisses ice water.’

‘I don’t know how he found out that Roy was HIV positive, and then it was like, boom, gone,’ recalled Susan Bell, Cohn’s longtime secretary, in an interview. ‘Which was kind of shocking because they were friends. But who knows Donald’s motives? I assume he didn’t want to associate himself with somebody tainted.’

Some words to think about pronouncing:

Jennifer (there’s only one consonant between the i and e)
Wind (it should always be short i)
Radar (since the second a starts “and” should the word be pronounced radair or raderr?)

In San Mateo County you can bring an iPhone. They will even let you browse the internet with certain exceptions but it’s kind of on the honor system-they don’t check to see what you’re looking at.

If it’s a drug case, remind everyone of jury nullification. You don’t have to give a verdict of guilty just because they did it.

It’s an interesting question. At my son’s facility, they ban cameras and are very careful to note all of the gadgets that have them (cameras, phones, handheld game devices, etc). I seriously doubt that they have put the same consideration into the question as they have into patient privacy at his hospital.

While there, if I am in a patient space, my phone better stay in my pocket or else…

That can be a bit dicey. Jurors have gotten in hot water after other jurors told the judge they talked about nullification. Some judges consider such talk contempt of court.

I’m not saying those judges are right, but its is something to be wary of.

Too little meets too late:

Cruz, Kasich coordinate in new anti-Trump effort

“To ensure that we nominate a Republican who can unify the Republican Party and win in November, our campaign will focus its time and resources in Indiana and in turn clear the path for Gov. Kasich to compete in Oregon and New Mexico, and we would hope that allies of both campaigns would follow our lead,” Cruz campaign manager Jeff Roe said in a statement.

Obviously the Ted Cruz campaign is the only thing standing between Kasich and big success in Oregon and New Mexico!

You are right about that. I disagree, but I also don’t believe in nullification on a philosophical basis: our system of the rule of law over the rule of man - that a specific set of rules is better than the whims of an easily swayed individual - depends upon the defense of that set of rules by all members of the judiciary and that includes jurors.

There needs to be a better mechanism than the all or nothing situation we currently have.

I think they do everywhere. My county tries really hard to make it as convenient as possible, but lets face it, it isn’t very convenient. It’s hard for people who won’t be paid if they don’t go to work (there is juror pay after the first day, but it is an insignificant amount) and if you are a doctor, or someone else with actual appointments, what do you do about your patients/customers?

I saw another article on the same subject that had some actual numbers. The court needs about 80,000 jurors per year. And they send out ~550,000 summons. And they get no response at all on 175,000 of those. (Which are the ones the scofflaw court was supposedly following up on.) And the difference is made up from those who request and get exempted due to hardship.

And, interesting enough, I just got a summons in the mail today.

I’ve found jury duty to be a quintessentially American, damn near Norman Rockwell kind of experience. But that isn’t the jury duty experience I want to tell you about.

An actress I knew was of a certain age and type that she got only a few small character roles for herself, but she made an excellent living as an acting coach for much bigger names. The same week that she was coaching one of these big names for a movie shooting location in New York, she was called for federal jury duty. She phoned to tell the clerk that she couldn’t make it because of the movie and was told in no uncertain terms that she had to appear. She fretted and decided that she would skip the first day regardless. She did, and the next morning had a nasty call from the clerk’s office explaining the consequences of nonappearance. But she went to work on the movie anyway.

She continued to do this for the remainder of the week, exchanging daily conversations with the clerk of court’s office that became increasingly dire. The term of her jury call expired at the end of the week, but she worried continually about what might happen to her, ranging from some sort of heavy fine to outright arrest.

About three weeks later a serious-looking letter with a Justice Department seal showed up in her mailbox. It scared her so much that it took her two days to open it. It contained a check for her jury duty service.

Still wouldn’t be viable, since many of today’s middile and upper-class parents would be aghast at the idea of of their Special Snowflakes “owing service”. And the civilian agencies would suffer serious negative effects from helicopter parenting and only the military could use the social equivalent of Stingers.

One of our neighbors some years ago was a county judge. Overheard someone ask him at a BBQ what would happen if they didn’t show up for jury duty. His answer: nothing. Since summons aren’t sent via certified mail it couldn’t be proven that the summons were ever received. I only used that bit of info once when I ignored a summons that requested my presence in the middle of a summer field course that my grad students had paid for and there was no one who could cover. Since I had shown up 3 times in the previous 3 years I felt not a single twinge of guilt.

Welcome to Canceled Too Soon

the podcast that only reviews TV shows that lasted one season or less! Every week, your hosts William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold will guide you through television’s strangest missteps, and decide once and for all if they were… canceled too soon!

William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold celebrate their first episode by reviewing a show that only lasted one episode: POOCHINSKI, starring Peter Boyle as a Chicago cop who is reincarnated as an animatronic talking bulldog.

Could POOCHINSKI possibly be as bad as it sounds? Bibbs and Witney try to decode this craziness and pitch ideas for future episodes as CANCELED TOO SOON, the podcast about TV shows that were canceled too soon, begins.

Come on, it’d be fun. Especially, the unseen episode with a flashback where Poochinski’s uncle, who was also a cop, is shown paling around with John Burge while they beat a confession out of robbery suspect who Poochinski later learns was innocent. Or the one one where, as a bulldog, Poochinski is ordered to go bite hippy protestors of the 2012 NATO summit because “Hippies smell bad and they challenge our authority!”.

Sorry, but the Chicago Police Department deserves a small bit of sour grapes.

It’s settled! Creator tells us how to pronounce ‘GIF’.

And he should know.

Linguistic note here.

G before i or e (and rarely, y) is generally pronounced with a “je” sound. (See what I did there?)
G before a, o, or u is generally pronounced with a hard glottal “ge” sound.

So GIF should be pronounced “jif” even though the first letter stands for “graphic.” We’re treating the acronym like a word. JPEG, unfortunately, is hard to pronounce without sounding out the first letter: “JAY-peg” not “juh-PEG.” And I have no idea about PNG.

Why does g have a dual personality? Blame the French, who brought their orthography and language to Britain in 1066. Before the Normans landed, nearly every “g” word in Old English had a hard (glottal) g.

French uses u as a guide for pronunciation. For example, “guide” (from Fr. guider) has that extra, silent u to remind the speaker to say “ge” and not “je,” as in “gigue” or “genre.”

IIRC, Latin always had a hard “ge”, but it got softened (palatized) when Latin morphed into French. Meanwhile, the Spanish pronounce the u in “guardia” as a “wuh,” but not in words like “querer” (to love, to want).

OK, language lesson done.

The Tough Coughs As He Ploughs the Dough.

Some of my Chinese students have learned (incorrectly) in middle school that the “gh” in “daughter” should be sounded, like a “ge”: “dogter,” which sounds a lot like “doctor.” Drives me nuts. I have to correct them again and again, but it’s a bad habit they learned early on, and old habits are hard to unlearn.*

Likewise, some students try to pronounce the “g” in “foreign,” which sounds like they’ve something stuck in their throat.

Five hundred years or more years ago, the “gh” was pronounced, but like a hard “g.” it was the “throat-clearing” sound like Scots “loch” or German “nicht.”

A present past

Some neighbours have disapproved of her generosity, fearing an influx of people with extremist views. But Panagiota knows the horrors her guests have been going through.

Spanish solves the problem with “giraffe” with “jirafa” — no confusing “g” to muck things up. The French use the soft “je” sound, which in English became more like “j.”

Merriam-Webster and Wiki say the word comes from Arabic “zarafa.”

While informative, the coiner of a word is not the determiner of pronunciation, and English being what it is, a highly bastardizable language, I think we can pronounce “GIF” pretty much anyway that makes sense.

I have used both the hard and soft “g” sounds.

However, when it comes to “Giga-” as in “gigabyte” I always use a hard g.

This is an endearing and hilarious story about new centenarian Don Waful. His grandson Jefferson is the lighting designer for Umphrey’s McGee.

Waful has long been disdainful of the rock and rap tunes typically played at ballparks. He prefers the big band sound, and the Chiefs honored him by sprinkling that genre in on Friday.

“It’s about time,” Waful said. “One, two, one two three. I can’t stand (rock). You ever hear the rock group today called ‘Umphrey’s McGee?’ My grandson is their light man. Makes a lot of money flashing lights on the wall when they play. I don’t know what that’s got to do with music. It’s got nothing to do with music. I said, I’ll have dinner with you (his grandson), but I ain’t going to hear any of that so-called music of yours.

“The Glenn Miller Band is orchestra is still playing. You could get your machine (computer), and it will tell you where they are playing tonight. Ghost bands, we call them. They (the original members) are all dead.”

I don’t think anybody would agree with what ISIS is doing,” Tamer said, using an acronym for the extremist group. “He says, ‘We have to stop ISIS now, immediately.’ “

This quote is a good example of why the left has to be clear about acknowledging perceived and actual threats. Trump can say, “Stop all Muslims” and some people hear, “He really just means stop the Jihadists and Islamists.” When the left says, “Trump is crazy and a racist”, some people hear, “The left does not recognize the threat and is leaving the door open to Jihadists and Islamists.”

Stopped caring so much for Firefly when it became a political meme. Mostly for libertarians. I remember being exorciated for deconstructing this pic.

Captain Mal fanboy picture

“You don’t know me, son…” Okay. We’ve established that the person in the picture and the person he’s talking to are strangers.

“…so let me explain this to you once:” The person in the picture is very aggressive, bordering on asshole in my opinion.

“If I ever kill you,” Wait! What? The people involved in the conversation live in a place where one trying to kill the other is a likely outcome of their interaction? Remind me to stay away from there.

“you’ll be awake. You’ll be facing me and you’ll be armed.” Now this is just stupid. If a relationship between me and another person has degenerated to the point where one of us is going to die I am not going to settle it with a quick draw contest. I will end it in a matter most fatal to them and safest for me.

Did I get screamed at for that. One of the anarchists, I mean libertarians, told me in a very butthurt tone, “You really don’t understand Firefly.”

Good times. But I’ve not cared much for Firefly ever since. Still prefer Babylon 5.

“C” generally follows the same rule as “g”, like I mentioned above.

“c” before a, o or u sounds like “k”, usually.
“c” before e, i or y sounds like “s”, usually.

Roughly the same as in French or Spanish, especially with words with Latin roots.

Impossible, though. The cost of military weapons and logistics is simply too high to have a military that large.

You don’t have everyone on active duty all the time. Everyone goes through basic and does a year or two of some sort of national guard type work (our infrastructure is so shit I have no doubt there’s more than enough work to go around), and then they go into some sort of reserve status.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Authorities found a body in a Kansas hotel room that erupted in flames during a shootout in which three federal agents were injured while trying to arrest a robbery suspect, the FBI said Sunday.

The FBI said in a release that two deputy U.S. marshals and an FBI agent who were part of a U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive task force, suffered non-life-threatening injuries Saturday night when they came under fire while trying to arrest 28-year-old Orlando J. Collins at a Topeka hotel.

The suspect, who was being sought on a federal robbery warrant, was also on the state’s most wanted list and was considered armed and dangerous, the FBI said.

As the officers approached the hotel room they came under fire from inside the room, the FBI said. During the gunfire, a fire broke out in the room where authorities later found a body.

“An unidentified body was located within the hotel room where Collins was believed to be,” the FBI release said. The agency did not immediately identify the body or say whether Collins was arrested.

Since it’s hard to find a phone without a camera these days, do you really expect people to leave their phones at home?

The rules are all over the place, depending on the court, who is involved, etc.

Jurors who are seated for a trial might not be allowed their phones, but those waiting to be called might be allowed to use them in the waiting areas. Visitors might or might not be allowed use of phones. Same for lawyers and clients.

In one instance 8 people were murdered in Ohio, and it may have been drug related execution style murders. No word on who did it, number of suspects, or anything else.

In the other, 5 were killed by a gunman who then took his own life.

Both of these states have very lax gun laws. Didn’t help any of those killed. There were no good guys with guns to save any of them. And in the Ohio shootings, the gunmen are still on the loose.

Yes, but the PACs weren’t given handwritten invitations to a formal tea with cucumber and watercress sandwiches with no crusts, so it isn’t collusion.

Basically. Colbert did a bit, when he was running for the President of the United States of South Carolina and had a superPAC for same, where he, with the guidance of a lawyer, skated right up to the edge of what was legal. He did what they are doing now, and more, and it was all legal.

Tomorrow is another batch of primaries, including big delegate count state PA. MD, CT. DE, and RI are also in play tomorrow.

Right now, it looks like Trump and Clinton will win those states handily.

Bernie needs to win by at least 17 points in every one of those states. He’s down by nearly that amount in PA and by even more in MD. Once again, Bernie fans will some how spin that their movement has momentum even though reality shows that they’re getting trounced yet again.

Bernie doesn’t lead in any category: total votes, delegates, or superdelegates. There’s no reason for supers to change their allegiances ahead of the convention since Hillary is crushing it on the delegate count and total votes. Of course, his supporters think that pounding on the table will work wonders. Yet that’s the refuge of those who don’t have anything else in their favor.

Tomorrow will reinforce that fact (which simply has been in place since Super Tuesday).

$6 million. But no criminal charges against the cops who murdered Rice; the grand jury declined to bring charges.

That’s despite the video showing Rice doing nothing other than playing in a park and cops riding right up to Rice and within moments gunning Rice down without so much as assessing the scene. No one could possibly have survived that encounter the way the cops played it. No one would have a chance to react and respond to cops directions when they opened fire the moment they left the car.

Sad indeed. Been trying to figure out how to Page poll this audience of specific gun control measures. But not sure about the best structure, still playing around with the questions.

This is also one of the reasons to legalize the whole cannabis supply chain. Right now growing is very dodgy, so they deal cash, which the bad guys figure out fast and the rest is as to be expected. This in between legal status is great for consumers and dangerous for workers.

Legalize to get the cash into bank accounts and do biz with wire transfers etc as a wholesaler. Also looking to get government inspection of products and manufacturing facilities like food and other consumables. Hopefully before a contaminated product hurts anyone.

The media has their narratives and they’ll stick to them. Trump supporters don’t care that he’s unqualified for the presidency. They don’t care that he’s a misogynist, xenophobe, bully, and ignorant about how government works. They like what they hear in the snippets he gives. They don’t care that he quote-tweets white supremacists and Neo Nazis all the time.

That he isn’t a politician is all that matters to them.

He’s going to capitalize on Cruz and Kasich teaming up, though their individual efforts haven’t exactly gotten results either. In the end, that wont matter as Trump gets the nomination and the anti-Trump faction has to choose between him and Clinton.

At $6M apiece, I guess black lives do matter.

One would think someone would point out to the deficit hawks/budget obsessives that even if they don’t care about basic human decency or respect for minority lives, maybe letting cops kill unarmed black people for no good reason is also a cash flow problem.

Naw, because the towns/cities that pay these out will simply tax the same communities to raise the funds to pay off these settlements.

We saw this with the Greater STL region, where minorities live in communities that impose all kinds of societal costs on residents - funding the justice system with onerous taxes, fees, and policing that is designed to raise revenues, not maintain actual justice or safety.

STL isn’t alone with these problems.

Minority Report was a more recent one-season SF series that died an ignoble death. They couldn’t quite decide if it was a police procedural, a foreshadowing of a dystopic future, or an emotional conflict show with three characters with varying degrees of loyalty to humanity. The projected tech was not bad, though.

I hadn’t had a chance to show this earlier, but several months ago, I was able to create an empire on Europa Universalis IV that in essence shows off the areas where I come from ancestrally, where my family lived in the US before the 1970s.

Ancestral Areas

The US map is slightly inaccurate. The Colony acted independently, and took half of Connecticut and a small chunk of Virginia. The Thirteen Colonies represent most of the area, with the nearby dark reds being areas under colonization. Also, I had to colonize Bermuda, to colonize the mainland.

Lawhawk…maybe the east coast didn’t have a lot of coverage of the Ohio family killed, but I sure couldn’t watch or read any Columbus/Ohio media that didn’t cover it! Backwoods and I put up quite a bit here at LGF. There actually was a lot of national coverage on the bigger news shows.

Now about guns in Ohio….yes this state is lax. One thing though, I bet those families had guns. Most rural Ohio folks do, especially in that part of the state. And if they were pot producers I bet they were plenty armed. But it didn’t matter if they did.

A buddy and I were talking about it last night. I think there are a lot of folks in that part of the state that grow pot. The economic depression almost demands it.

The fact that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was brought in might be a signal that the local sheriff knew what was going on with the family ‘business.’ I’ve heard stories of local law enforcement looking the other way with pot growers because they know those people have very little means.

One more reason the whole damn country should legalize it so it could be a means of economic benefit to poorer areas of our country that could have another crop to produce.

I may be repeating, but up thread when Charles first got them loading someone mentioned you can right click on the image, then select show controls which allows you to shut them off. But, only until the thread gets refreshed and they all start again.

I’m betting Charles figures out a way to get them to post without autoplay and you need to select play. It should be an Internet Law that nothing is autoplay…not even ads. Dammit!!!

Embedded YouTubes apparently don’t autoplay, but there’s no way to stop them from autoplaying when you go to the actual YouTube page. I found a Firefox extension that will keep them from playing, but they still buffer, which is the whole problem anyway.

If you feel the need to abuse these, throw the tabs in cold water, mix, and decant the liquid. The acetominphen is pretty insoluble low temps and the opiods are quite soluble. Better living through chemistry.

re: #219 Blind Frog Belly White

I love Robert Reich’s short explanation videos covering topics in economics in simple language and with humorous drawings. And I generally agree with him on stuff. And during the campaign so far, he’s generally taken the high road, highlighting what he thinks is so great about Bernie.

Now he’s just getting pissy, as the inevitability of defeat settles on him. He’s done a series of posts this morning, kind of equating Clinton and Trump.

I can’t wait for the Primary season to be over.

He was on MSNBC a week or so ago with Chris Hayes and they had him discussing Bernie’s plans with Barney Frank. Barney was getting pretty heated over Reich’s Bernie Bro act. It changed my opinion of Reich quite a bit. Sure he knows his economics, but I was surprised at his political naivete.

Frank basically told him what Bernie wants is the same as what Dodd-Frank does. Only it isn’t exactly Glass-Steagall and it doesn’t get labelled as “Breaking Up the Banks” which sounds good to the Bernie supporters. Frank did say if the banks reach a dangerous level of investment Dodd-Frank does cause the bank to be cut up into smaller banks.

re: #223 Backwoods_Sleuth

Pot is an unbelievably huge business in these parts.
(Not a joke that it’s the # 1 cash crop in Kentucky!)
And the danger in the business is as bad as the cartels in some respects.

I know that both Vinton and Meigs counties have many summer crops. It would not surprise me if there wasn’t a lot of indoor growing going on too. I’ve heard stories of large setups in old coal mines too. Out of sight.

When the story about the Ohio folks first broke and I saw the overhead shots and noticed the properties had some large out buildings. I thought they might have some activity going on in them right from the start.

Last night the sheriff said there were something like 38 LE searching the woods around the properties also.
