Donald Trump’s Unfavorable Rating Among Latino Voters: 87%!

Subterranean
Politics • Views: 46,808

In the latest poll on the presidential candidates by respected research firm Latino Decisions, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have nearly identical favorability ratings:

Clinton:
Total favorable: 61%
Total unfavorable: 32%

Sanders:
Total favorable: 61%
Total unfavorable: 24%

The difference in their unfavorable ratings is clearly due to the “No opinion” results:

Clinton:
Have not heard of them: 1%
No opinion/Don’t know: 6%

Sanders:
Have not heard of them: 5%
No opinion/Don’t know: 10%

But when it comes to the Republican candidates, the results are almost comical.

Ted Cruz’s numbers are a mirror image of Clinton’s and Sanders’:

Cruz:
Total favorable: 36%
Total unfavorable: 52%

But Donald Trump’s ratings actually made me laugh out loud, because the Republican front-runner continues to boast about how well he’s doing with Latinos — despite his bigoted anti-Latino remarks and delusional plan to make Mexico pay for a gigantic border wall.

Uh… nope.

Trump:
Total favorable: 9%
Total unfavorable: 87%

Eighty-seven percent unfavorable! That’s not just underwater, it’s at the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

Here’s the complete poll:

Clearly these polls are skewed because Trump’s favorability would be much higher if the pollsters only polled those who like Trump.

I saw a copy of the latest Economist magazine this morning. On the cover it asked whether Hillary could fix the economy, and I had to take a peek.
The answer is: They hope so, but she may not take big enough steps to do so.
At the end of the piece they mentioned that even if she didn’t she would be way better than Trump, Cruz, or Sanders. If The Economist doesn’t like a businessman like Trump, you’d think people would reevaluate their support of him for economic reasons. (What’s that you say? Those people have never heard of The Economist, and would dismiss it as a vehicle of the liberal elite if they had? Well, alright then.)

However, Albert Speer is just fine with most of the Freepers. This is from a thread on how the Nazi party was the origin of the “Sustainable Development” movement…

Excellent book. Speer was one of many who advanced their careers by becoming party members, even though they had nothing to do with the Nazi atrocities — but their reputation paid the price when the war ended. Conductor Herbert von Karajan comes to mind.

Parts of the GOP did learn that. To the base they are now the despised GOP-e (establishment.) The base is pure in their principles and unwilling to compromise-or listen to the voice of experience here in CA. We just get written off as a bad state.

You don’t understand. Sustainable development, Nazi style, was invading neighboring countries, stealing everything they had, then putting the losers to work as slaves until they dropped dead or got shot.

I don’t think most Freepers would have a problem with that.

I have very eclectic musical tastes, but one kind of music I’ve never been able to get into is super-glossy, over-produced, autotuned, over-commercialized, all-surface-no-substance, kill-it-with-fire pop music.

This isn’t all pop music, by any means. There’s been some great pop music too. But the vast majority of what’s marketed as pop music today is, IMO, technically perfect but sadly empty fluff devoid of heart or soul.

The irony of the Koch brothers complaining about the GOP nominees, despite their assistance in getting the party where it is notwithstanding, I have to admit I can hardly wait to hear D_F’s reaction to them saying they won’t support either Trump or Cruz because they’re both such horrible, extreme candidates.

The L.A. Guns singer argued that the “problem is, right now — and I’m not gonna be a racist about it — but black people are all one-dimensional.”

“We need more Princes, man,” he opined. “We need less f*cking rappers and more people like Prince. There, I said it.”

one of our divers is a bee-keeper. He says the way you collect a swarm is to spray some sugar water on them, they get full and sleepy, and you can just sort of gather them up. He also said that he would never charge to collect a swarm, that there aren’t enough bees as it is, and every bit helps.

He also said that a good spray for wasps and hornets is a 50/50 mix of DAWN dish soap (he was very specific on that) and water. Kill them almost instantly, it gets between the plates on their bodies apparently. Plus there is no residue left that’s dangerous.

We use it in the shop to clean regulators that are going to be used with high oxygen mixes (40%) and up. It does a fantastic job of getting any grease / contaminates / hydrocarbons out of the metal. (and 100% O2 at 3000psi doesn’t like any grease anywhere along the pathway.)

The swarm appears to be a somewhat stubborn one — we think the queen is in the box, but a significant clump have settled on a much higher branch in the ash tree. The keeper sprayed some more sugar water on the bee box and is going to Home Depot to rent a cherry-picker. This may be one of the uncooperative swarms. I got Libertarian bees?

Will have to remember that trick for wasps, though — those little stinkers come back every year like clockwork.

Interesting. I suspect that, while Dawn has petroleum in it, the amount it uses is dwarfed by cars, and that getting petroleum out to make Dawn and other petroleum based products (plastics for instance) still wouldn’t require the kind of “must get it to our destination in a hurry” effort that use in cars does.

Chris Kelsey, who worked for Newtown at the time, said they had to get a warehouse to hold all the teddy bears.

Simon asked, “Was there a need for teddy bears?”

“I think it was a nice gesture,” Kelsey replied. “There was a need to do something for the kids. There was a need to make people feel better. I think the wave of stuff we got was a little overwhelming in the end.”

And how many teddy bear came to Newtown? “I think it was about 67,000,”

Good afternoon Lizards. Brilliant weather today in Philadelphia so I took advantage of it to go take a hike in a state park to the west of the city. (Ridley Creek)

A bit tired after hiking eight miles of meandering trail. Took about sixty pictures (flowers, insects, a few birds) and it’s now time to start sorting them out while a gin&tonic sorts me out.

All the large birds were seen while driving to and from the location: Turkey Vulture, Red-tailed Hawk, and even a Bald Eagle soaring above the Schuylkill.

Mrs. FBW looked into it, and even cremation isn’t all that Green. Instead, she found a cemetery in Marin County that does ‘green burials’. where they wrap you in a shroud and put you in the ground sans box, vault, etc. She’s specified that as her preferred disposal method.

At least a dozen elite sports cars clocked at ‘well over’ 100 mph on I-394
The cars included Lamborghinis, a McLaren, a Ferrari, a Maserati and other exotic makes.

The drivers of a dozen or more high-end sports cars were cited for reckless driving Saturday after a state trooper clocked them at more than 110 miles per hour as they zoomed west on Interstate 394, just west of Louisiana Avenue, authorities said.

One state trooper stopped seven of the vehicles as they doubled back and headed east on Hwy. 12 near Wayzata Boulevard (County Road 15), but five others allegedly took “evasive” actions and sped away, said patrol Lt. Tiffani Nielson. The drivers of those five vehicles were later cited when they stopped at a Holiday gas station in Maple Plain.

If these guys pulled this stunt in Finland, with their graduated fines based on income over the speed limit, they’d be paying tens of thousands in fines.

As it turns out, there’s a statute in MN which could have some of these jokers lose their licenses for six months should the State Police decide to avail themselves of that charge.

That’s how Muslims are supposed to be buried—the body is washed, enshrouded, then buried on its right side without a casket. The burial part doesn’t always happen that way though (due to laws preventing it in many places).

For me it’s not just an environmental thing. I just find cemeteries depressing and pointless. I don’t see a reason to have a burial like that. At least being planted as a tree would have a lasting benefit somewhere and the rest of my ashes being spread would give my loved ones final closure.

The deceased’s face is supposed to be facing the Qibla when buried, but I’m not sure why the right side is specified. I’m sure there’s some religious reason for it, but I never bothered to ask (or wasn’t listening closely if someone explained it). Here’s a list of the basic rules.

The Zoroastrian method of burial in Persia was to leave the body out until the bones were picked clean by vultures, then inter the bones in an urn. I don’t know if the remaining Parsees do that any more or not.

Confirmed by Ohio Attorney General…

Columbus Dispatch - Piketon homes where family died had sites for growing pot, officials say

PIKETON, Ohio — Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine confirmed late this afternoon that there were marijuana-growing operations at three of the four Piketon homes where eight family members were found dead on Friday morning.

DeWine also called the mass slayings “a pre-planned execution of eight individuals” and a “sophisticated operation” in a news conference with Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader.

But he and Reader would say little else.

Both said they wouldn’t comment on any information that could jeopardize the case, including whether there was more than one shooter.

DeWine said that law-enforcement officers have followed more than 100 tips and conducted 50 to 60 interviews since eight members of the Rhoden family were found dead — many in their beds — on Friday.

He did say that the killer or killers did “everything they could” to cover up evidence and make this case difficult to solve.

“This is not your case where someone’s got mad at someone and shot them,” DeWine said.

He and Reader said the Hamilton County coroner has completed seven of the eight autopsies, but wouldn’t comment on those results.

DeWine initially also wouldn’t speak about reports that there was marijuana found growing at some of the homes, saying that could jeopardize the investigation. But at the end of the news conference, he said he would confirm that it was found growing at three of the homes. He, however, wouldn’t say whether authorities believe that had anything to do with the slayings.

The dead have been identified as: Dana Rhoden, 37; Dana’s ex-husband, Christopher Rhoden Sr. 40; their daughter, Hanna Rhoden, 19; their sons, Christopher Rhoden Jr., 16, and Clarence “Frankie” Rhoden, 20; Frankie’s fianceé, Hannah Gilley, 20; Kenneth Rhoden, 44, who is Christopher Rhoden Sr.’s brother; and Gary Rhoden, 38, a cousin.

That might be rough to search for. I did a Wikipedia for “pavanne” and that sort of led me to “pavane” - and the latter is a Italian term for a sort of processional dance. And the term gets used repeatedly since then.

CuriousLurker  Apr 24, 2016 • 4:22:43pm

Uggggggh. I was poking around with Google and found this from May 2015. Somehow, I manged to miss it last year:

Saudis Turn Birthplace of Wahhabism Ideology Into Tourist Spot

DIRIYAH, Saudi Arabia — More than 250 years ago, in this sunbaked oasis of mud-brick houses and ramparts, the ancestors of the Saudi royal family and an outcast fundamentalist preacher formed an alliance that has shaped this land ever since.

In return for political supremacy, the House of Saud endorsed the doctrine of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahhab and followed it to wage jihad against anyone who rejected their creed, gaining control of much of the Arabian Peninsula.

That alliance laid the foundations of the modern Saudi state, which has in more recent times used its oil wealth to make the cleric’s rigid doctrine — widely known as Wahhabism — a major force in the Muslim world.

And now, this site, the birthplace of it all, is becoming a tourist attraction. […]

The project comes at a tough time for Saudi Arabia. Popular revolts and civil wars have shaken the regional order; the drop in oil prices has hit the national budget; and the kingdom is once again being accused by many of promoting an intolerant brand of Islam similar to that of the Islamic State.

But the kingdom is doubling down on its origins. The development of Diriyah is a pet project of the new king, Salman, who is seeking to create a showcase attraction to reinforce the royal family’s national narrative. The entire complex is expected to open in two years at a total cost of about a half-billion dollars, according to a contractor who declined to be named because the sum has not been made public.

Saudi officials hope the project will link citizens to their past and rehabilitate the reputation of Sheikh Abdul-Wahhab, which they say has been wrongly sullied. […]

Madawi al-Rasheed, a visiting professor at the London School of Economics who has written books on Saudi history, said the royal family tries to bolster its legitimacy by creating “historical amnesia” about aspects of the kingdom’s past that do not relate to its rule. […]

nytimes.com

So there are Muslims suffering all over the Middle East who could use some help, and Islamic heritage sites have either been neglected or razed, but, yeah, let’s build a freaking half-billion dollar showcase for Abdul-Wahhab. Priorities!

Excuse me, I feel a scream coming on and need to go find a pillow to muffle it…

After the Fastfood Wars there will only be Taco Bell.

But seriously that sort of sucks. But it looks like the Saudi royal house is more concerned with building things that support their version of history and I guess doing prep work to help cover themselves when the oil riches start declining. And that leaves the overall heritage of Islam as a secondary priority.

It turns out that, when the other half wants to do the hike that follows the path he likes to do mountain biking on, there is actually going to be a fair amount of elevation gain.

Ha. Ha.

Maybe not the right hike to try breaking in a new old pair of shoes on.

Folks here are more knowledgeable than myself about modern music (“Prince? Who he?”) and there’s something been bugging me for the longest time, and a mention of the Thomson not-twins (Richard and Linda) brought it to mind. The piece is “Pavanne” which I have memories of being covered by someone who wasn’t suffering from narcolepsy (unlike the Richard and Linda T. version which draaaaaags) along with a music video. Anyone, any ideas who it might be and where I might hunt down a copy?

Can’t help. I’ve heard a lot of the Thompsons’ catalogue (and Richard solo), but not “Pavanne.” But, yes, there are some songs from R and L that they just turned into dirges.

The oversize of Trump’s ego must be weighed against the thinness of his skin. If he were revealed to be a YUUUGE LUZER on a national stage, I would not be surprised to see him turn into a complete recluse.

Again, the Kochs are under no illusions: even as part of the 1%, they know that their own business are going to suffer while the entire US economy totally tanks should Trump or Cruz win the White House.

I assume the Koch Brothers will rally behind Cruz if he somehow gets the nomination. I can’t see them sitting out the general election — especially since the Senate is at stake.

It was on their album “First Light” from back in the 70s. I’ve checked the Crosby cover and it’s not the version I recall, it drags about as much as the Thompson version does which is strange given the lyrics describing a seductive female assassin, the eponymous Pavanne.

Pavanne was on the ‘First Light’ album, the first album they did after giving up music and living in a Sufi commune for a while. That whole album was kind of a tentative return, but any album by R&L is worth hearing. Linda Thompson wrote the lyrics for that song.

The bottom line is that for a functioning investigative agency with a team of experts and an active lab, it would probably take about 2 days. But even if they started from nothing, it would take the FBI (or anyone) no more than $50K and about a month to unlock this phone with the technique I proposed. Below are my rough estimates, with links and details explaining each step.

The basis might be a dirge. Ravel did a piece titled Pavane for a Dead Infanta, popular in classical circles. (‘Infanta’ is ‘princess’, not ‘infant’.) Ravel’s could have inspired the Thompson’s bit.

addendum: The tune shows up as the mid-century pop hit The Lamp Is Low.

re: #64 Reality Based Steve

one of our divers is a bee-keeper.

RBS

Suspect the Dawn/water mix clogs the insect’s spiracles, or openings to the respiratory system in the thorax and abdomen and suffocates the insect.

Dawn is also commonly used to clean birds and mammals of oil residue from oil spills.

a baked potato filled with crap I hate & didn’t ask for,so the server got a crappy 10% tip.

I work at my part time job for tips and have lived on them in the past so I tend to generosity. That said, the bolded bit says it all. That stuff is automatically to be asked about. To not ask is bad service and frankly I’d consider you generous for going to 10%. The last time I got service like that, about 10 years ago, I penny tipped the waiter. Hope he got the hit., though I doubt it.

Donald Trump: ‘If I lose, I don’t think you will ever see me again’

If that quote is indeed accurate (I’m rather down on Business Insider), that may be the biggest lie he’s made throughout this entire affair.
