Got a dump-and-run question here, apologies: what does Jill Stein get out of forcing these recounts? IIRC, didn’t she say at one point if she didn’t win, she preferred Trump?

My Google-fu has been pitiful on this one. TIA for any help.

She’s using the Pyrrhic recounts as a money raiser for the Green Party, it also keeps them & her in the news longer.

My Google-fu has been pitiful on this one. TIA for any help.

In 2000, the Libertarian and Green Parties challenged the vote in Ohio, causing a recount, which uncovered two state elections officials that went to jail for trying to “affect” the recount.

After numerous statisticians released a paper stating it seemed that the stated vote count was different than what was recorded in the three states, she launched the recount.

All three GOP states tried various methods to block her recount, which is her right to ask for. In Wisconsin, they claimed she had no standing (she does, she is a candidate). In Michigan, the claim was it could not be conducted before the Electoral College meets, and they took her to court. Her claim in court was if the state could not conduct a proper recount within the time allotted then there is a fact a problem with Michigan’s electoral system.

In Pennsylvania, the people within the state called for a recount, as is permitted under Pennsylvania law. When the state tried to stall, she took the state to court in state court. The Trump team demanded a ten million dollar bond from the Stein campaign, the court ordered her campaign to put up one million dollars.

Since it is not the Stein campaign (directly) calling for the recount, but voters in Pennsylvania, Stein dropped the case in state court and moved to Federal court, arguing that individual voters don’t have the kind of money the state is demanding, that it is their absolute right under Pennsylvania law to request a recount, and that their Constitutional rights were being violated by the Pennsylvania government.

Pennsylvania and Michigan are both claiming Dr. Stein is stalling the count, when in fact it is those state governments stalling the counting.

The Green Party says it will not keep any extra money, it will be donated to charitable causes if there is any left.

As for keeping her in the news, that worked for Donald Trump. Does the Green Party have to play by different rules than the Republican Party? Moreover, she is not getting in the news for outrageous Twitter statements and bald-faced lies; she is getting in the news for exercising her rights.

In the case of Pennsylvania, it is state voters in each precinct applying for a recount, which the Green Party supports, and they are exercising their rights.

I’m all for getting in the news for exercising your rights rather than for lying to the media and the media lapping it up.

Moreover, Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has weighed in on the issue of computer hacking of the Democratic Party on the side of the Democrats. He is concerned for the security of the vote regardless of whether alleged cheating helped the GOP or not (this has not made him a real fan to Donald Trump or other Republicans).

Donald Trump and Reince Preibus have both claimed there was massive voter fraud without evidence. (They also conveniently sidestep the issue that voter fraud could benefit the Republicans, the GOP assumption is that fraud must benefit Democrats even though those caught in illegal voting schemes this year were all Republicans).

The only way to determine if there was voter fraud is to conduct hand recounts (the claim of both the statisticians and the Green Party). If there is evidence of fraud, surely the GOP would want that? Especially if that fraud helped the Democrats?

All of the whining is coming from the GOP, which is painting a narrative that Dr. Stein is a sore loser and wasting state funds (a: no, b: her donors are paying for it so also no).

If the recounts show that Mr. Trump won in those states by pretty much the margins posted, that would strengthen the GOP’s claim that he won. So why is it the GOP that’s doing all the whining here? And why are those who are not GOPers buying the GOP narrative without thinking about what the GOP is saying?

As for the donors, it’s their money. They did not have to donate to Dr. Stein’s recount effort. Had they not, then Dr. Stein likely could not have launched it at all. Is the claim here that someone cannot donate their own money where they wish?

The way that the fringes win is by marginalizing our institutions to minimize their effectiveness. There are many ways to do this, including making people doubt that elections are fair and not rigged. Donald is doing it his way, and Jill is doing it hers. Peas in a pod.

It is Dr. Stein’s absolute right to request a recount if she is paying for it. It is the Pennsylvania voters absolute right under state law to do the same.

If the recount is largely the same as the original count, then how does this undermine the system? The same people who counted it the first time are counting it again (albeit with lawyers watching as well).

Moreover, the Clinton campaign has also lent lawyers to the recount effort - are you suggesting that Hillary Clinton is trying to undermine confidence in the vote?

Again, the only people whining is the GOP. They are the ones banging the “voter fraud” drum, not the Greens or Democrats. The Greens say they want to verify the integrity of the vote (a famous GOP politician once said “trust but verify” - now one of their saints). If the vote is in fact secure, then the Greens have undermined nothing. If it is substantially different than what was originally reported, do you want to ignore that?

And though I did not send her any money, I am supporting. I guess we’ll have to “agree to disagree” here (I hate that phrase).

Drilled into us repeatedly in the Navy was the phrase “if you do not use your benefits you will lose them.” In my opinion the same applies to your rights.

I only see two outcomes from a recount:
a) Recount largely confirms the original count. System strengthened because proof was provided it works as it should.
b) Recount shows significant errors in the counting. System strengthened because proof exists it is not working right so it can be fixed.

One of the issues in the Wisconsin recount is that Wisconsin is still using voting machines banned by other states because of the ease of manipulation of those machines.

One of the issues in Michigan (which uses optical scanners) is that many ballots were returned that showed straight Democratic tickets with no vote for President. Software and hardware engineers have weighed in on the issue of optical scanners and noted that they can miss marks on documents if they do not go through absolutely correctly. A hand recount in Michigan would verify the scanners are working as they should.

Trust, but verify. - Ronald Reagan.

US election recount: Greens change tactics in Pennsylvania bid

The US Green Party led by Jill Stein has changed its strategy in seeking a state-wide recount in Pennsylvania.

The campaign says it will go to the federal courts, hours after dropping an appeal in a Pennsylvania state court.

The party had earlier said voters could not afford the $1m (£785,000) bond ordered by the state court.

My bold because I was unaware that the VOTERS were paying the $1m; that’s what she is supposedly raising money for (she has raised a little over $7m according to her fundraiser page right now).

I trust her about as far as I could throw her.

Well, she isn’t counting the votes.

The only recount I am intimately familiar with is my village board recount in 2014, where I beat the gun-shop owning Republican candidate by four votes for my reëlection.

He’s a nice enough fellow, but had trouble believing the resident leftie in this village could have pulled that off, and he said so to my wife when she was in his shop on library business.

I went over to his shop, where he told me he wanted to launch a recount of the village board vote but did not know how to do it. I told him I would get him that information as quickly as I could (he has no Internet service like everyone else in town, and the county was not particularly helpful).

My wife and I dug around on the Internet, called the state attorney, dug up all the information for him (including the necessary forms and filing fee requirements). He filed, the vote came back that I beat him by four votes (no difference).

He still isn’t a big fan of my politics, but his opinion of my integrity shot up, as I helped him get the information he needed to launch a recount even though I won the election.

(He is now on our village board; the board appointed him to fill a seat that went vacant when a board member moved away.)

He still hates my moustache and long hair, but we get along a lot better than we used to.

The only information that I can add/give is that if the difference between the winner and the loser is close (i.e.: 10,000 votes in the mayor’s race here in Philly) an automatic recount is done. In this case I too was not aware that the Green Party or the voters has to pay. I always thought the the automatic recount was at tax payer expense.

Her fundraising page says otherwise. It specifically says filing fees for a recount in Pennsylvania.

When she originally put the page up, it was to raise money for filing fees (and any associated legal fees).

The state stalled until the time passed where she could legally launch a recount.

However, individuals in each precinct under Pennsylvania law can also ask for recounts (I am not sure how many it takes), and they have more time under the law.

Since the recount petitions went in to the state, the state tried to slap the giant fee (though ten times less than what Donald Trump asked for). The state is continuing to stall, hence the Federal court case.

Army Corps Denies Easement and Blocks the Dakota Access Pipeline

The Army Corps of Engineers has denied the easement needed to complete the Dakota Access Pipeline, according Colonel Henderson, who first notified Veterans for Standing Rock co-organizer Michael A. Wood Jr.

More than 3,000 veterans had converged at the Standing Rock camp to support the Sioux in their ongoing opposition to the building of a $3.7 billion pipeline that would cross through disputed land managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.

“This is history,” Wood said, upon learning the news.

Veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces arrived on 4 December 2016 by way of chartered buses, cars and planes to offer their support to the tribe in its months-long demonstration to protect its drinking water and sacred sites. The pipeline would have crossed land the tribe says the project violates a treaty that grants them the land and that they have opposed the project from the beginning.

The event, organized by veterans Michael A. Wood, Jr. and Wes Clark Jr., raised more than $1 million dollars after just two weeks, citing desire to protect the Sioux and demonstrators from violence.

I actually went to the doctor about this on Tuesday, since the cough has been since the Japan trip. I have the list of things to watch for as a sign that it’s more problematic, but it’s likely just post-nasal drip getting into my lungs and making life difficult. I have no symptoms other than the cough and the occasional morning sore throat/slightly stuffy nose, so she’s not too worried.

Did the doctor check your ears? My awful cough turned out to be secondary to an ear infection after an 11-hour plane ride.

Yep. All was clear. Aside from this cough, I am pretty much the picture of health. (I’ve been keeping up with my training schedule fine, this is probably at least somewhat justification for being lazy on a Sunday morning because lazy.)

I will actually stay on top of the cough meds and anti-allergy stuff for the next few days and see if that makes a difference.

I am honestly torn on this because to end any further confrontation and violence at this point, it looks like this is necessary. On the other hand, having read the judges order denying an injunction in Sept, the Standing Rock utterly failed to make their case for any “sacred sites” through which the pipeline actually goes through, this on top of their council dropping out of many planned attempts by the company to meet and discuss the issue over the last 2 years as they have done with other tribes which led to important changes along the route. If anyone has yet to read the Judge’s opinion, it contains the background on the controversy and details that haven’t been covered very well since the decision was announced, especially after the water canons came out, when to many it might seem besides the point, but I’m not convinced this was a case of an evil energy corp simply and carelessly defiling Native American land.

Let them yell. The term has been around for seventy-five years or more.

An assault rifle is a selective-fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine. Assault rifles were first used during World War II. Though Western nations were slow to accept the assault rifle concept after World War II, by the end of the 20th century they had become the standard weapon in most of the world’s armies, replacing semi-automatic rifles, battle rifles and sub-machine guns in most roles. Examples include the StG 44, AK-47 and the M16 rifle.

The term assault rifle is generally attributed to Adolf Hitler, who for propaganda purposes used the German word “Sturmgewehr” (which translates to “storm rifle” or “assault rifle”), as the new name for the MP43, subsequently known as the Sturmgewehr 44 or StG 44. Although, other sources dispute that Hitler had much to do with coining the new name besides signing the production order. The StG 44 is generally considered the first selective fire military rifle to popularize the assault rifle concept. Today, the term assault rifle is used to define firearms sharing the same basic characteristics as the StG 44.

I was having a conversation with Mrs. Fish last night about guns. Now, understand, I have two young toddlers, 5 and 3 years old. We both have no qualms about owning firearms, provided we take exceptional precautions to keep them secured when not in use. I had the realization, and I informed her as much, that I don’t feel the need to keep a gun in order to use it to defend myself. Mrs. Fish and I are both trained in basic hand-to-hand combat, and I have no problem with keeping whatever guns I may own on complete lockdown, because I won’t ever feel like I simply must get ahold of one in such short notice that the additional security causes an unacceptable delay. It’s just a non-issue for me, and so we both feel that it’s less of a risk for us to own compared to those who want to own one purely for the purpose of shooting a person with it (even if that be in self-defense).

The BBC also has an excellent rundown of the whole sorry mess:

The saga of ‘Pizzagate’: The fake story that shows how conspiracy theories spread

Users of 4chan, a message board known for free speech, extreme content and trollish behaviour, began posting speculation and supposed connections gleaned from internet searches. They trawled Alefantis’ Instagram feed for pictures of children and the modern art which lines his restaurant’s walls, and dreamt up a paedophile sex ring involving prominent politicians and political donors.

The army veteran presence, plus a significant backlash against Wells Fargo on social media (remember that WF already got a lot of heat for their business practices not that long ago, so they can’t afford another major PR hit being tied to this) more than likely played a role.

I’m proud of those veterans for doing the right thing. I should have said that from the beginning. It heartens me to see good people doing good things, standing up for what’s right, protecting those who are weaker and with less of a voice and RESISTING. Bless ‘em. It was directed at the Army Corps of Engineers (with whom I have decades long issues and a couple of outright wars) and those goons you reference. I have just so had it with the only voices that count, the only power, being in the hands of white men.

Which is confusing because Oahe was included as one specific area discussed by the judge.

As previously discussed, Lake Oahe is of undeniable importance to the Tribe, and the general area is demonstrably home to important cultural resources. Even here, though, the Tribe has not met its burden to show that DAPL-related work is likely to cause damage. The Corps and the Tribe conducted multiple visits to the area earlier this year in an effort to identify sites that might be harmed by DAPL’s construction. See Eagle Decl., ¶¶ 13-14; Harnois Decl., ¶ 29. While the Tribe identified several previously undiscovered resources during those visits, these sites are located away from the activity required for the DAPL construction. See Harnois Decl., ¶ 29. Ultimately, the Corps considered these findings and determined that they would not be affected by the permitted activity. Id., ¶ 33. Most importantly, the North Dakota SHPO concurred in this opinion after having toured the site as well.

I think she’s an ugly person too but what Blue is objecting too I believe is calling her a Sewer Rat. We didn’t like Trump calling Clinton a “nasty woman.” Kellyanne is awful. She’s a homophobe, she’s an enabler of the worst kind but I can see Blue’s point.

I was in agreement with BlueRaven… beauty is only skin deep. It was moreso a statement on her own internal ugliness beyond any visible looks. Sorry if there was confusion on that…

My issue isn’t even the sewer rat outside of the insult to rats (which are pretty amazing critters once you understand them). It’s the continuation of judging women based on appearance. It’s the whole Barbi meme - another whole set of destructive messages and brainwashing. It’s just misogynist AF.

I haven’t seen the SNL skit yet. Were they trying to juxtapose using that line with the “Nasty Woman” attack on Hillary? If they didn’t, then I am disappointed.

Her beliefs make her an ugly person from the inside out.

I would say it was her lack of beliefs.
