This news will have no effect on my minimal air travel because I’ve had a rigid no-United rule in place for many years. What did it for me was United’s charming habit of canceling just enough of its many scheduled flights each day between the LA area and the SF bay area to ensure that the remaining flights were always completely full.
This must really be bothering the hell out of Trump and his people. A Republican that can’t manufacture an approval rating bump via a military action is in deep trouble.

This news will have no effect on my minimal air travel because I’ve had a rigid no-United rule in place for many years. What did it for me was United’s charming habit of canceling just enough of its many scheduled flights each day between the LA area and the SF bay area to ensure that the remaining flights were always completely full.
For me, it was the pain of having to be routed through O’Hare (United’s regional hub) every time I wanted to fly from the fishbowl back to fish country. Delta offered direct flights, so after a flight that got canceled in O’Hare that left me stranded in the charming Chicago suburbs and necessitated a rescue mission by fishfolk, I decided never to do that again.

LOL. That’s even worse. It’s hard to imagine a more fucked up customer service situation. You can always get people on a flight to give up their seat if you offer them enough. In this case their internal calculus figured that the dragging someone off was cheaper than just negotiating, and now they’ve got a PR disaster, a personal injury and (possibly) a civil rights lawsuit on their hands.

This is standard operating procedure for airlines, by the way. They oversell every flight, based on a calculated percentage of people who will miss the flight, people who will want to go on standby for a previous flight, etc. I think the heinous part of this story - which I’m only inferring based on commentary - is that United personnel who are on standby should not be kicking paying customers off of flights. That’s the whole point of the standby system.

If their people needed to be somewhere, United should provide an alternate mechanism other than waiting on standby. To me, “employee standby” is for employees who are wanting to take a flight somewhere as a perk, and should be lowest priority. If they are being transported as part of business operations to get them in position for a future run, that’s not standby.

of course there’s a danger to people when nations use chemical weapons. That’s why one of the first multilateral treaties in the 20th century was intended to ban the use of biological and chemical weapons. We saw what they did on the battlefields in the Great War and collectively said, “that’s enough.” It’s also why something like 180 out of 185 countries have signed onto multiple treaties banning their use and prompting their destruction.
But you can’t just bomb them. When you bomb shit, it tends to blow up. In the case of gases, that creates plums. Which leads to people dying.

About 35 years ago my flight from Midway airport to the Virgin Islands (with a stopover in Miami) had too much weight in the cargo hold (lots of mail, they said), so the airline (I can’t remember which one) offered $500 to anyone who was willing to wait until the next day. I didn’t take the offer because I lived an hour away from the airport and didn’t want to make a return trip.
When I was coming back from Scotland in 2005, we switched planes in Detroit for the final leg to Bluegrass Airport. It was a smallish puddlejumper commuter aircraft and, again, there was a weight problem. That airline (Northwest) elected to send our checked luggage on a different flight and delivered it to our homes the next day. (I live about 100 miles away from Bluegrass Airport.)
There are ways to handle stuff like this without physically dragging paying customers off an aircraft.

2017 estimates for the Syrian Air Force are 461 operational aircraft. The previous and probably also somewhat inflated US estimate for aircraft damaged or destroyed in the raid was 20. Not 20 percent, 20 aircraft. Given that we gave the Russians advance warning and they in turn told the Syrians it was coming, the probability is those 20 were mostly junkers the repair shop keeps around for parts and a few grounded aircraft that were in for repairs.
So, you tell me how the Pentagon takes that and officially sells it as “20 percent” of the Syrian operational air fleet damaged or destroyed by one telegraphed raid at a relatively minor airbase?

You still need a mind set of an asshole to join the group. As a good person you can always point out how wrong it is to the group and maybe get some reasoning going. But if you are already an asshole, it is easier to join up with the others and be a group of assholes.
To me it always comes down to the individual choice. If you don’t want to be an ass, you don’t go with the group. A group is just a pack of individuals that have chosen to be asses.
Now maybe Untied has gotten to the point the entire company has chosen to be asses to people because they feel they can because they have a service people need in an industry that doesn’t have enough choices.
Maybe someone sees this as an opening to compete with United and others. Sure seems like United is open to become extinct…just need the competition to take them down. Just a little too big for their britches.

2017 estimates for the Syrian Air Force are 461 operational aircraft. The previous and probably also somewhat inflated US estimate for aircraft damaged or destroyed in the raid was 20. Not 20 percent, 20 aircraft. Given that we gave the Russians advance warning and they in turn told the Syrians it was coming, the probability is those 20 were mostly junkers the repair shop keeps around for parts and a few grounded aircraft that were in for repairs.
So, you tell me how the Pentagon takes that and officially sells it as “20 percent” of the Syrian operational air fleet damaged or destroyed by one telegraphed raid at a relatively minor airbase?

If you were at Coachella 2013 on the first weekend like I was when The Stone Roses were headlining their first US show since 1995, you would understand where he is coming from. I went that year specifically for The Stone Roses AND Blur (which was also their first US show since 2003 at that time). There was already a small crowd for Blur on the Main Stage so when The Stone Roses closed Friday night at that same stage, the crowd got even smaller. I gave up on United a few years ago when ALL FOUR legs of my trip were the subjected to major delays, in some cases over three hours.
The only reason I didn’t miss my connection in one instance was because that plane was badly delayed too.
I was supposed to be home by 8 that night. Didn’t make it until almost 2 am.
I was flying San Francisco to Chicago on United (last time I flew with them). It was Sunday at 10:00 AM. I was starting a new job on Monday and figured I had enough time to deal with some flight issue, which is usual if you fly, well, anytime. Shit happens all the time.
They had two flights to Chicago at the same time and one was cancelled due to mechanical failure. All the people with Status (members with their frequent flier program) from the cancelled flight were moved to my flight…and every other flight throughout the day (with confirmed seats). One minute I had a seat (that they gave me at the gate) the next I didn’t (even with Status!). I bitched and moaned so loudly and constantly I was finally able to get the last available seat (after giving all the rest to Executive level Status people - and their family members). Having low level Status was the only thing that got me on that flight.
There was no other availability to get back to the Chicago airport until 11:00 AM the next day. The day I was supposed to start the new job. At 9:00 AM.
I. Was. Pissed. Even though I got on the flight it was a very stressful serveral hours.
That was the last time I ever flew without having an assigned seat; ticket in hand. And it was the last time I flew United.

If you were at Coachella 2013 on the first weekend like I was when The Stone Roses were headlining their first US show since 1995, you would understand where he is coming from. I went that year specifically for The Stone Roses AND Blur (which was also their first US show since 2003 at that time). There was already a small crowd for Blur on the Main Stage so when The Stone Roses closed Friday night at that same stage, the crowd got even smaller. I’ve never been to Coachella, despite living in Southern California. There’s been a couple of times I’ve been tempted (the year GNR reunited was probably the closest I came to buying tickets). Then I talk to people who have been and I realize that it seems like a generally shitty experience, especially now with how big it’s become (and I’m not much into EDM anyway).
I am, however, looking forward to going to Viva Las Vegas this weekend. Horton Heat, Wanda Jackson, Brenda Lee, Freddy Cannon. That’s going to be fun.

The differences in the two states are fairly clear, but the results seem to be the same. No real Democrats in office.
However, the similarities are also evident.

At one time Columbus had a lot of really great lumber yards where the common person could get hardwoods, real good pine of all kinds, straight 2x4s that stayed straight once you got them out of the stack and high quality hardware, etc.

I don’t come across many crazy doctors, but every one I do is an elected Republican.
I’ve known some pretty crazy doctors. I worked as an ER security guard while I was in grad school in the 80s. I would write a book about it, but nobody would believe me.
One doc in particular was both a complete asshole to patients and a far-gone gun nut. He kept 8 or 10 guns in his car in the parking lot. One day, he approached me and said, in a confidential tone, “Hey, if you ever need some extra firepower, I have a full-auto AR-15 out in my Jeep.” I thanked him but said if it gets that bad, I will just call the National Guard.
He was finally fired (a great rarity for a doctor) over an incident with a patient who had come in after taking an overdose of sleeping pills. The doc was mad because we had to wake him up to treat her. He got her fixed up and, as she was leaving, he went up to her in front of the nurses and other patients and said, “Next time why don’t you save us all the trouble and use a gun!”
At that point she lit into him, pushed him back into a corner and started beating the hell out of him. He was a scrawny little guy and she was a very big woman. He screamed at me, “Officer, are you just going to let her do this?” My first thought was “Sure, she seems to be handling it okay by herself.”
After a few more punches, I relented and got control of the woman. She didn’t resist which was a good thing since she weighed about 330 pounds. I hauled her outside and told her, “Look, I know the guy is an asshole, but you can’t beat people up in here; it’s against the law.” I told her how to file a complaint, wrote up my own report and found out the next day that the doctor had gotten the boot, forever, and including his admitting privileges.

If their people needed to be somewhere, United should provide an alternate mechanism other than waiting on standby. To me, “employee standby” is for employees who are wanting to take a flight somewhere as a perk, and should be lowest priority. If they are being transported as part of business operations to get them in position for a future run, that’s not standby.
When I was coming back from Florida last month, the plane was at the gate; the crew was at the gate; they waited 2+ hours for some employees who were deadheading on the flight (this was Spirit—don’t even get me started.)
I just want to say though, that people who continually say “I’ll never fly again—I’d rather drive” don’t seem to get the idea that if you live on one coast and have to go to the other coast for work, flying is not just an option, it’s the only feasible way to get where you’re going.
And now that American has sucked up USAir, things are even worse from where I live. Worse connections and higher fares. Our stupid little airport has super high gate fees, so we lost the bidding war for Southwest and JetBlue. Flying is a gigantic pain in the ass, but when you have to go thousands of miles, it is definitely preferable to do it in hours rather than days.
One other thing—they used to be pretty generous if you were willing to take a bump—next flight, free trips, and if it was going to be overnight they’d give you hotel vouchers, meal vouchers and transport vouchers. Not any more. It’s travel vouchers and you can fucking sleep on the floor at the airport. No thanks.

Indeed. Tom Peters in one of his “…Of Excellence” series of books talks about the case of Jan Carlzon, who took SAS Airlines from 14th of 17th most punctual airline to number 1 in punctuality and stopped it from bleeding money and returned it to profitability all in a year’s time.
So how did he manage to achieve such success?

Whatever term you choose, Cullen and his small newspaper have scared something out of the powers that be in a few counties of northern Iowa. Since the founding of the Storm Lake Times in 1990, says Cullen, he and his brother John have been obsessed with how Iowa has changed its mode of agriculture. Gone are the cattle and grazing pastures, he says — they’ve been herded into feed lots. Meantime, the landscape has been gobbled up by expanses of corn and soybeans. With the changeover has come nitrate pollution. One of the first stories that the newspaper did, he recalls, reported how its coverage area had become “the hottest spot in Iowa for nitrate pollution.”
As the newspaper reported, the Agribusiness Association of Iowa “bailed” on the setup “rather than disclose who its mystery donors are.”
Don’t get the notion that all this is just an Iowa thing. As Cullen’s paper has pointed out, pollution from Midwestern farming leeches into waterways and affects life hundreds of miles away, including the Gulf of Mexico. “They’ve changed the entire agricultural system since 1980, without any consideration how it affects groundwater or surface water. It’s a national story. It’s just that it happened in our front yard and we’re still reporting on it,” says Cullen, who says he was turned down three times by the Des Moines Register over his career.
Perhaps the sweetest part of the Pulitzer, says Art Cullen, is the vindication it brings. “We took a lot of heat,” he says, referring to attacks from people in Iowa that the Storm Lake Times and the Cullen family are “anti-farmer.” Not so, he says: “My wife grew up on a farm. Tractor hacking is growing increasingly popular because John Deere and other manufacturers have made it impossible to perform “unauthorized” repair on farm equipment, which farmers see as an attack on their sovereignty and quite possibly an existential threat to their livelihood if their tractor breaks at an inopportune time.

Alabama Dems are not unified. Constant defection of elected Dem officials, race/age antagonism, and economics render them almost useless except for a few urban strongholds. Still, they are the only realistic opposition. That’s why Wife and I spend our presidential year effort out-of-state.

Oh yeah—but here, we have Spirit carrying about 60% of the passengers, with horrible schedules and terrible service (I even hate their annoying website), Delta, some United, and the NEW American—which has totally screwed up any good connections through Charlotte that US Air had, raised fares and continues to such canal water.
I will only fly Spirit if it’s a non-stop flight of less than 2 hours, but even then, they can fuck things up. When I was going to NY last year, they said they were circling the airport—forgot to mention they were circling Baltimore, not LaGuardia. Landed in Baltimore to refuel, let everybody off the plane but had no plan for how to get them back ON the plane. Then the pilot went on a huge rant about how the FAA was fucking everything up. Was supposed to get to NY at 4 pm—got there at 9:30. Thank goodness I convinced my friend that we should get our Hamilton tickets for the next night, instead of the day we got there. I would have fucking lost it altogether if I had missed the show.

So it made sense that Goldenvoice would follow suit by hosting Coachella at the same venue, which to its credit has worked out very well. Even with the dusty environment, the desert locale and ambiance makes it worthwhile of an experience.

The crowd is very douchey and not appreciative of the rare acts that get on the bill, so yeah it’s a shitty experience for many. I’m hesitant on going back precisely because of the ever-growing douche factor, especially in an age of Trump being the fucking President.
