Amazing: Gabriel Garzón-Montano: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Bobby Carter | May 26, 2017 — I was, admittedly, thrown for a loop when Gabriel Garzón-Montano told me that he wanted to perform unaccompanied, just him and a piano. The meticulousness of his work is clear on his debut album, Jardin, a three-year creative process in which Gabriel plays most of the instruments, tracking them to two-inch tape, layering its overall sound. Jardin takes its title as an umbrella; fruits, bugs and other plants are the driving metaphors tying together this dense work, which blooms over successive listens. Garzón-Montano doesn’t necessarily wear his heart on his sleeve — he forces you to listen and peel the layers back.

Garzón-Montano’s career trajectory veers wide — living with Philip Glass for a year while his late mother played in the composer’s ensemble, sitting under the minimal maestro’s piano as he practiced; Lenny Kravitz making possible his first tour experience; while Drake exposed Gabriel’s sound to the masses.

That decision to go it alone at the Tiny Desk made sense, though, the moment he started to play; his talent is left elegantly exposed in this unadorned performance. He says his visit to the Tiny Desk “with just piano and vocal reminds me of what is lost when a song is fully produced and arranged — it was an exciting and vulnerable experience. I was nervous for this one.”

Here then, are three songs from Jardin, along with the song that introduced Gabriel to the world… laid bare.

Jardín is available now:

Omaha Man Gets ‘Covfefe’ Liceense Plate after Trump Tweet Goes Viral (goes to the Omaha World-Herald)

Betty Johnson, administrator of the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, said Milton’s online application arrived for the COVFEFE plate at 3:59 a.m. Wednesday.

Milton, 26, said he woke up in the middle of the night, checked Reddit and saw the whole “covfefe” thing blowing up. He said he had been toying with the idea of getting a vanity plate for a few months and thought a tweet-inspired one would be fun.

On Birth Control Works’s article about Florida becoming the first state to issue (voluntary, but wait for them to make it mandatory down the road) so-called certificates of non-viable birth, I can see this being used as a new avenue for states to chip away at Roe v Wade (and other women’s healthcare laws).

Your tax dollars at work in Florida. Glad I don’t live there anymore, but I can see other GOP lead states running with this bit of “fiscal responsibility.”

It sounds like Gov. Rick Scott (R-obbed Medicare) needs to have a campaign launched against him similar to the “Periods for Pence” campaign against then Gov. Mike Pence (R-adical Theocrat).

I legit don’t understand how some white folks literally cannot help themselves. They HAVE to use that word. Have to. No matter what, they cannot let their privilege be abridged in the slightest.

It’s such a stark reminder. Imagine having to live thru a lense of what you can’t and shouldn’t do. Always. That double consciousness.

Maher flaunts his flag of freedom from any internal conflicts of self right in our faces. He could not help himself. I don’t understand that urge and that freedom. Survival may depend on it. He swims in the waters of the privilege with his gills and gets to joke about having lungs. Let me breathe!!

Continuing my remarks from downstairs re: DC TV shows, here are my pocket reviews.

Gotham: Dark, but somewhat campy. Gotham is a hellhole, why would anyone want to live there? But we watch the development of teenage Bruce Wayne into the Batman (I love Mazouz as BW, but jeez he’s a skinny fellow), Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and the numerous arch-villains. Not part of the Arrowverse, but I am detecting some hints of Ras al-Gul entering the storyline, but not by that name, because licensing.

Arrow: Also dark, because the hero is quite the accomplished killer. Plots touch on substance abuse, complicated love affairs, lying to friends, and the supernatural. Star City ranks #2 after Gotham as a dystopian nightmare. Steve Amell looks the most superhero-y of all the DC TV actors, though Melissa Benoist as Supergirl also looks suitably athletic.

The Flash: More light hearted, because of Barry Allen’s optimism and charm, but boy did he fuck up the timeline by being selfish. Now he’s got all kinds of problems with time travelers, villains from the multiverse, and his own comrades. The first spinoff from Arrow. This one is probably my favorite, because of the character mix.

DC Legends of Tomorrow: A ragtag collection of heroes and crooks travel through time trying to prevent a superbad guy from making everyone’s life miserable. More jokes, less dark, and more kid-oriented than the others. The series does not hide Sara Lance’s sexuality, though. The second spinoff from Arrow. The Rip Hunter actor is riffing off Doctor Who, I think.

Supergirl: Originally on CBS, it’s now on the CW and has had crossovers into the Arrowverse. Also light hearted, it deals with SG’s emotional issues about being an orphan, a junior superhero who wants a normal life, and a career woman who wants to be taken seriously, with an adoptive sister who just came out of the closet. Her cousin makes occasional appearances, but mostly they just text each other. National City is apparently a sanctuary city for ETs, and plots have dipped into xenophobia — a clear comment on the Trump era. Mostly though, it’s for kids, and Melissa Benoist is now an idol for girls and apparently a really sweet person IRL.

Wonkette also weighed in on the Florida “non-viable certificate of birth” law with a pithy headline.

wonkette.com

I note that they look at the law the same way I do: If you call it a “birth” rather than a miscarriage, you are redefining miscarriage to mean “baby.” (Only babies are born.) From there, you can move to laws “protecting babies from being killed” meaning an attack on Roe v Wade.

I guarantee you this law won’t be the last in any GOP controlled state like that, and it will be used to attack women’s rights.

So, picking up where I left off downstairs, here I present a New York newspaper from 1789, the Gazette of the United-States. Be sure to read the front page article “On Slavery”:

Summarily, it argues that most of the slaves in America are probably better off as slaves.

It would take the abolitionists almost 60 years to precipitate a change in American politics.

If you feel that way.

Liberals constantly call out generalisations made by conservatives (such as the names given women who seek birth control pills). I don’t see any difference when liberals do that with groups either.

Would you be as bad on Maher if he called someone out as a Polack? Or is that “notasbadas.”

I’ll refrain from commenting for a couple days; perhaps I will be able to see the difference. Nighty night.

re: #34 klys (maker of Silmarils)

It’s unabashedly inspired by the great anti racist Tim Wise who taught me so much thru his writing, including the most hopeful belief that members of the majority can get it.

“What does it mean to be white in a nation created for the benefit of of people like you?… Being a member of the majority, the dominant group, allows one to ignore how race shapes one’s life. For those of us called white, whiteness simply is. Whiteness becomes, for us, the unspoken, uninterrogated norm, taken for granted, much as water can be taken for granted by a fish.”

“Ask a fish what water is and you’ll get no answer. Even if fish were capable of speech, they would likely have no explanation for the element they swim in every minute of every day of their lives. Water simply is. Fish take it for granted.”

Kim Reynolds is not governor according to Iowa Constitution

Well, that letter writer is in practicality wrong, because everyone is treating her like the governor. But the replacement for Lt. Gov. is a mess, apparently:

Seeking to avoid a legal fight over her power, Gov. Kim Reynolds named Republican attorney Adam Gregg as her administration’s No. 2 official Thursday but stopped just short of making him the official lieutenant governor.

I know you won’t see this but here goes. Polish and other Eastern-European Americans aren’t experiencing what African-Americans do. One of the most famous African-Americans experienced racial slurs being spray-painted on his house. Just yesterday, I read a thoughtful elegy to one of the most prominent Polish Americans (Zbigniew Brzezinski). When my brother would drive with his African-American friends, they experienced police harassment. When he drives with me, he’s never been so much as pulled over. The police don’t know we’re Eastern European, Irish, and German descent but they sure as hell do know his friends are black. Was Richard Kuklinkski’s Polish-American culture analyzed the way African-American culture gets analyzed when black people commit crimes? Was the fact that his father was abusive linked to the “Polish-American culture.” Meanwhile, whenever a black person commits a serious crime, black people have to hear lectures from white commentators about how teir collective culture causes crime. You don’t get that as a Polish-American, you just don’t. From what I can gather, no one said your complaints don’t matter but they are telling you to keep things in perspective. You call it “Notabadism”, I call it the fact that we so called white ethnics can and adapt because we lose our ancestors’ accents and sometimes we even change our names, yeah we may get teased as “micks”, “guineas” “polacks” or “hunkies”, but never in my 30 years have I ever felt actually systematically targeted for being an American of Eastern European, German, & Irish heritage. Unfortunately many of my African-American friends the same age can’t say the same.

For me the recliner seats have completely changed movie-going forever. For the better. I will never go to see another movie in a theater without them. Sitting in a super comfortable seat not being packed in like sardines makes the experience so much more enjoyable.

I used to absolutely hate going to the theater to see movies and would always wait for DVD before. Now I actually love the experience.

Last election, Trump did much better in MN than he ought to have. Around St. Paul and to its southeast there are still a lot of liberally minded people, but even around Minneapolis there is quite a contingent of religious right. Remember, this is the area that brought us Michelle Bachman.

True that.

Arrow: a fan, personally, and this season that just wrapped was so much better than the previous one that it didn’t seem like the same show. Season 4 had a filler episode every other week. The flashbacks were perfectly integrated and one must presume that season 6 will not use flashbacks the same way, if at all (?)

Legends: Got off to a tremendous start in season two. Season one was hindered by the cartoonishly ridiculous villain, and the Hawk couple, who were the lamest demi-god superheroes ever. The present season kept a light sense of fun, but had a much better villain trio. (As a Torchwood fanatic, seeing John Barrowman cross over from Arrow was a great pleasure). Damian Dahrk was more tolerable as he got to quip with his accomplices, not just with his adversaries.

Speaking of crossovers; wow, the invasion storyline was just awesome, both Legends and Arrow’s episodes had great moments. Arrow more because of Laurel’s return.

I am constantly amazed how RWNJs can get their panties twisted up over fictional characters. Murphy Brown, Harry Potter, Diana Prince, Heimdall — you would think these are real people the way the conservatives rant about them.

Meanwhile, the social commentary underlying some superhero movies (X-Men, The Avengers, SHIELD and Hydra, etc.) flies right over their pea brains.

91
Barefoot Grin  Jun 3, 2017 • 7:12:11am

I saw this on Rick Wilson’s twitter feed: Ayn Rand’s Harry Potter

Professor Snape stood at the front of the room, sort of Jewishly. “There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don’t expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few who possess, the predisposition…I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death.”

Harry’s hand shot up.

“What is it, Potter?” Snape asked, irritated.

“What’s the value of these potions on the open market?”

“What?”

“Why are you teaching children how to make these valuable products for ourselves at a schoolteacher’s salary instead of creating products to meet modern demand?”

“You impertinent boy-“

“Conversely, what’s to stop me from selling these potions myself after you teach us how to master them?”

“I-“

“This is really more of a question for the Economics of Potion-Making, I guess. What time are econ lessons here?”

“We have no economics lessons in this school, you ridiculous boy.”

Harry Potter stood up bravely. “We do now. Come with me if you want to learn about market forces!”

The students poured into the hallway after him. They had a leader at last.

I don’t know if you follow DC comics much, but one of the more recent characters was Booster Gold, a superhero who insisted on being paid and who accepted sponsorships, like a NASCAR driver. His mercenary tendencies rubbed the more altruistic heroes the wrong way.

Money never comes up in the movies, though. The Avengers have sometime quipped about lawsuits and damage payments, but action movies never seem to deal with who pays for the damages when superhero goes up against supervillain in the middle of town and they trash the place. What does Superman do? Crush a lump of coal into a diamond to pay Metropolis back? Do a whirlwind repair job with his superpowers? Does Tony Stark empty the company treasury?

A short blurb on the upcoming UK elections (scheduled for Thursday, June 8).

Prime Minister Theresa May is on track to win 308 seats in Britain’s parliament in an election on Thursday, 18 short of a 326-seat majority, according to a projection by polling company YouGov on Saturday.

May’s Conservatives had 330 seats when the snap election was called in April.

On Friday, YouGov said its model suggested the Conservatives were on course to win 313 seats, 13 seats short of a majority.

The opposition Labour Party is likely to win 261 seats, YouGov’s model showed on Saturday, up from 257 on Friday.

uk.reuters.com

For PM May, a result like that would be a debacle. Yes, the Tories would still be the largest party, but not a majority. And she’s got Brexit negotiations coming up.

If this forecast holds true, I’d expect Tory knives will be out for PM May come June 9th.

Really, I thought the whole sub-plot was handled sensitively and showed that same-sex couples have the same troubles as opposite-sex couples. But the nutjobs went ballistic when two women kissed each other passionately. OMG! think of the children.

Kids are probably cool with it.

What I liked about the way they handled it was that the whole story was less about Alex coming out - though that was well done - and more about Alex finally allowing herself to live her own life, rather than as Kara’s protector. And then Kara having to accept that Maggie is now as much a part of Alex’s life as she is.

Agreed. Alex being a lesbian was not the main point of the story. It was more like a, “Oh and by the way” kind of thing. The writers have done a good job with the family dynamics, and giving Supergirl a sister opens up more story lines. The comic book Kara Danvers lived in an orphanage until the Danvers adopted her as a teenager. She was an only child, like her cousin Kal.

Did Krypton have a one-child policy? The idea just occurred to me.

Vacant lot across the street from our house…the owners are going to build, unfortunately, which will block half our view (it’s also why we need to add a second story to our house). Guy living two doors down planted flowers in the lot last summer…weeded the thing, tilled the soil, turned it into a giant flower garden…watering it by hand, from buckets and a hose he ran across the street.

Owners cut all his flowers down last fall and sprayed Round-up on the lot about a month or two ago…flowers didn’t seem to mind the dose and came back with a vengeance.

Craig likes keeping the lot gopher-free…here he is all camouflaged and shit…

The actors who play in those costumes often complain how inconvenient it is to visit the toilet. You can imagine Robert Downey’s Iron Man suit, or Deadpool’s or Spider-Man’s unitard being a royal pain in the ass to get in and out of in a hurry. Often they need assistance to drop trou, as it were.

I drove through there with car carrier back in 77-79 when everything was closing. Down the Mon valley, over on route 7 in Ohio West Virginia. I grew up in Philly, which had mills, but not to the extent of western Pa. I remember billboards with “Will the last person to leave Ohio, please turn off the lights” outside Lordstown Oh. There are still mills through there all the way up to Youngstown, smaller ones. Been a while.

My church youth group did a week of service every summer—inner city (can’t remember where), Wichita Falls, TX after a big tornado, and one year western PA. We did a lot of painting and roof work in rural areas designated by the hosting church. The guy who drove us around, I remember, would give us helpful advice like “feed your dog gunpowder if you want to make him mean.”

I was 16, in great shape, tan. I’ll never forget putting tar on a roof on a hot day in one relatively poor small town and looking over and seeing a beautiful young woman staring at me from the house across the street. I waved and she waved back. Of course, I never met her. Every once in awhile over the years I’ve thought about her in that town—did she marry and stay? Go to college and get out somehow? What happened?

Speaking of temperatures, it will be approaching 90 degrees F (32.2 degrees C) this afternoon. So I made a command decision and got Mrs. Fish to help me roll her big brown beast out of the garage relatively early in the morning, so I could get underneath it and start installing the fuel tank before the temperatures went to 11. To my surprise, everything went back together pretty easily! It was only a 3-hour job, and that was with taking some breaks for water and to relax my aching hands. She runs amazingly well and I’m excited to start getting her put into car shows.

They got upset over Avatar as well, as the environmentalist natives were portrayed as heroes whereas the wealth-creating mining company was the villain.

And don’t forget the stink over Brokeback Mountain, for pushing a “gay agenda”

Germany is the hottest spot in Europe right not, but the annual late May/early June heat wave is something I have grown used to, the weather usually turns to hell just in time for our 4th of July celebrations and stays that way until about September, when it finally gets summery again for a couple weeks.

It was a few years ago, but one 4th of July celebration peaked out at 100 degrees F (37.8 degrees C). We usually get 1-2 weeks of temperatures in that range right around that time, and then it tapers off back down toward 90 degrees F (32.2 degrees C) for the rest of the summer. The temperature swings are very extreme here, which takes some people by surprise, as they think it’s always cold up in here.

“Covfefe,” these people on the internet insist, is Arabic for “I will stand up.” That is not even close to true. We asked Ali Adeeb Alnaemi, a professor of Arabic at New York University, what he thought of this translation, which has been falsely spread online by anonymous Reddit users with screen names like “PepeTheRacistFrog.”

Mr. Alnaemi, who previously worked for The New York Times in Baghdad, made a good-faith effort to see where this mistranslation may have come from. In a phone interview, he repeated the word “covfefe” several times before finally laughing. “Come on,” he said. “I’m sorry. No.”

But he can’t bring himself to do it. Not yet.

It has nothing to do with his legal status. He’s a legal permanent U.S. resident. But the 32-year-old East Los Angeles resident worries that his appearance, combined with the fact that he’s not yet an American citizen, could cause him to be flagged somehow.

Commerce, trade, personal relationships to and from abroad all require some trust and confidence in the underlying system. That’s gone. This looks like a small thing as anecdotal but I suspect it’s huge.
