You know what just occurred with the kneeling thing?
Trump is trying to outsource his fascism to schools, sports leagues, corporations, etc. by getting them to strongarm people into standing for the anthem.
Remember when we just wanted the news media to say the word “LIE.” Like it would be magic. Sigh.

Any progress at all is good, although it’s painful that it’s so slow.
Maybe one day I’ll see a total repudiation of the Republican Party from a major mainstream media organization (e.g., NY Times or Washington Post) run as straight news.
re: #2 retired cynic
Trump supporters don’t care what others say about his statements. They believe him. They are either brainwashed or malicious or both. My RWNJ brother won’t accept that the Dixiecrats all moved to the Republican party; he regurgitates Dinesh D’Souza’s propaganda that the current Democrats are the home of the racists.
We are in the majority but our gerrymandered districts and gerrymandered Constitution are failing us.
Of *course* I pulled a CL:
Funny. I was always told by my Jesuit teachers that kneeling was supplication to the object being displayed.- as if it wasn’t being respected by those who didn’t kneel.
Hmmm. That puts a whole new light on Kaepernick’s protest, doesn’t it?
It was almost as if he was was pleading for the flag to be respected by law enforcement officers who shot unarmed black men and children.
Yup. Funny, that.

I believe so.
Indeed. From Psalm 22:
“All the ends of the earth
will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
will bow down before him,
For dominion belongs to the Lord
and he rules over the nations.
All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
those who cannot keep themselves alive.
Posterity will serve him;
future generations will be told about the Lord.
They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!”

Yup. The press for the most part won’t call her a liar either:
Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein has largely based her campaign on her uncompromising positions on the environment, opposition to big banks and Wall Street, defense contractors, and the pharmaceutical industry. But an analysis of her financial disclosures, which she was required to file as a presidential candidate, show she is heavily invested in the very industries that she maligns the most and as a result of her investments, she has built significant wealth.
According to the financial-disclosure form she filed with the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on March 30, 2016, Stein and her husband, Richard Rohrer, have investments (with the exception of real estate) valued at anywhere from $3,832,050 to $8,505,000. (Stein told The Daily Beast she inherited “over a half-million dollars” from her parents.) We don’t know their exact net worth because filers are only required to provide a range of the value of their investments as opposed to exact values.

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday approved President Trump’s nominee to lead the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division.

re: #40 Kragar
He worked for a law firm that had Alfa Bank as a client. That is not the same as “working for the Russians,” but considering the connexions, is worth looking in to.
Wikipedia notes he has been nominated for the Criminal Division of the DOJ; it does not say he was confirmed for that position.
He has been placed on the Congressional calendar for consideration. That is not the same as “he has the job.” He was not confirmed today.
The Washington Post reported back at the end of July this guy was nominated. At the time he acknowledged his work with the law firm on behalf of Alfa Bank to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The tweet above is untrue (he has not been confirmed). If the standard for confirmation of a position is “never worked for a criminal as a lawyer,” an awful lot of lawyers representing criminal clients could not get appointed to anything. Same goes for those who work for the lawyers.
The person certainly requires scrutiny in light of what’s going on, but Alfa Bank is allowed to hire lawyers to represent it, just as any other corporation is. He worked for a law firm, not Alfa Bank.

I’m glad to hear that Ambassador Graham Martin gets his due in the Burns doc, that is, total exposure and vilification. The man was a jackass. He was also a favorite of Richard Nixon, perhaps demonstrating that the South Vietnamese government wasn’t the only one whose war effort suffered from cronyism.

Ambassador Martin is decidedly unsympathetic in The Vietnam War.
From what I understand of Amb. Martin, he refused to believe the military reports and intelligence coming in on the success of the North Vietnamese invasion. As such, he made the evacuation much worse than it had to be (and caused a lot of deaths).
Compare that with today, where we have the same political party refusing to believe the intelligence reports coming in on the success of Russian infiltration of our election.
It seems as though Republicans have been refuseniks for a long time.

I am dealing with my wife’s ex-hub in E-mail … he attacked me in E-mail for spreading “fake news” about Dr. Jill Stein (he turned into a Steinbot in the latter part of the election). I see he’s using the same crap arguments that other conservatives are. (The message is starting to be lost in the media that this is about unjustified police violence against minorities, and with questionably unlawful verbal attacks on the NFL by the Asterisk, also the I Amendment, not against “teh flag.”)
I made an affirmation to uphold the Constitution. That includes speech I think is uncomfortable or that speech I don’t like. As far as I can tell, conservatives aren’t satisfied with “proper time and place” for protests (whatever that might be), they want minorities to go into a closet (along with LGBT, non-Christians, immigrants, &c &c).
Protest Policing is an attempt to reject or deny the argument of the protest without being directly against it.
‘We, as a society, should be outraged’: a conversation about public health
“Hospital executives hate the Medicaid program because the payment is terrible. But I would submit it’s the most important program in our country. It insures about 83 million Americans — half the births, more than half the kids, and 70 percent of the long-term care spent. Think about that. And everybody hates it and doesn’t want to expand it?” — Kate Walsh, president and CEO of Boston Medical Center
re: #81 BigPapa
Protest Policing is an attempt to reject or deny the argument of the protest without being directly against it.
I am not against policing—any society as large as ours needs police agencies to enforce laws. I am against police as judge, jury, and executioner against minorities.
I noted here last week I got pulled over by the Nebraska State Patrol about a mile east of the Wyoming line for speeding. (I wasn’t paying proper attention while marvelling at a double rainbow … I don’t usually speed.)
I got a written warning (about fifteen miles over the speed limit on US-30). I imagine I am both white “enough” plus “veteran” emblazoned across my license, along with Gold Star Family plates were enough to convince the police officer I was just inattentive. I shudder to think how I would have been treated if I was a minority. Minority citizens shouldn’t have to put up with that crap.

Safe for work I think, I had tears coming out near the end.
re: #84 Anymouse 🌹
Also to be clear, I am not accusing my state patrol of unequal treatment under the laws.
What I am noting is that with the widely-publicised acts in other states that show unequal policing occurs, the question of unequal policing comes up in every state.
For every action of injustice amongst the police, concerns about unfair policing come up everywhere else.
Perhaps it is not fair to the police in every place that the actions of police in other places are misbehaving, but it begs the question of “if they aren’t fair in other places, are they fair in mine?”

SPECIAL REPORT: SCHOOLS AND THE FUTURE OF WORK
What Will Our Students Need to Know?
Technological change, globalization, and climate instability are happening at an accelerating pace all across the world. Artificial intelligence and automation are the engines driving much of the transformation in the workplace. Some experts even predict that 47 percent of today’s jobs could be done by machines within a couple of decades.
So what skills do students need to succeed in the uncertain, intensely competitive workplace of the future? Education Week begins answering that question in this special report, “Schools and the Future of Work.”

I read the other day that Governor Kenneth Mapp of the U.S. Virgin Islands signed an emergency order that allows the territorial government to seize private guns and ammunition and any other private property the National Guard may deem necessary to respond to Hurricane Irma.
I read where the City Council of Lincoln has proposed an anti-hate resolution. It says that the City of Lincoln recognizes values and will proactively work to promote diversity and inclusion within our community.
Really? What values? Does the city council have a right to tell individual citizens what to feel? What to say? How to think? What if a pastor preaches against homosexuality in a Sunday sermon from a pulpit in a Lincoln church? Will the city work to promote diversity and inclusion to respect everyone’s convictions and beliefs, or will the pastor be branded as intolerant by the city? Will the city council condemn the vulgar attacks against UNL Sophomore Kaitlyn Mullen when she tried to recruit for a conservative student organization on campus? Is she worthy of inclusion?

re: #107 The Vicious Babushka
During the Civil War New York City wanted to secede and call itself Tri-Insular
IO9 notes ten secession movements, though not all were during the Civil War:
One such secession movement: Christian Exodus.
Christian Exodus: When it was founded in 2003, the Christian Exodus movement called for a mass migration of Christians to South Carolina with the intention of created a self-governing Christian sovereignty within the state. The original plan was for members of the movement to flood the offices of local government, passing and enforcing Biblically rooted laws in defiance of Supreme Court rulings. Cory Burnell, the group’s founder, told the Los Angeles Times in 2005, “If necessary we will secede from the union.”
Burnell believed at the time that South Carolina would be an optimal state from which to launch a secession from the US. Since then, however, the group has stepped back from its mission for political secession in the face of potential government opposition, stating on its website, “We have learned, however; that the chains of our slavery and dependence upon godless government have more of a hold on us than can be broken by simply moving to another State.” Instead, the Christian Exodus movement now places its emphasis on “personal secession” from American culture, much like other groups that opt out of the mainstream culture, “with the ultimate goal of forming an independent Christian nation that will survive after the decline and fall of the financially and morally bankrupt American empire.”

Morning!
I watched this video and I note all he said about diversity.
One thing I don’t think I heard in the address by the General was a mention about the power of diversity of “religion.”
Did anyone? I will listen again, I may have missed it. I heard him say race and background…but not religion or even non-religious.
The reason I ask is the Air Force Academy has been under a lot of fire due to their becoming very Evangelical.
And if the general purposely ignored mention diversity of religion I think there are big problems still.
Some of their issues may have to do with “religious thinking” at the Air Force Academy.

Looks like It is pretty much a certified blockbuster.
Horror blockbuster “It” has turned into a box office monster, crossing the $500 million milestone in worldwide grosses — making it officially the top horror film of all time.
Warner Bros. announced Thursday that “It” has eclipsed the 44-year record belonging to “The Exorcist” as the top grosser among horror films with $441 million. The studio noted that record for “The Exorcist” had been one of the longest-held records in cinema history.
“It” scored the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film in more than 30 markets, including the U.K., Russia, Brazil, Mexico, and Australia. In 17 of those territories, including the U.K., Russia, and Australia, “It” has already become the top-grossing horror film of all time. The film has plenty of gas in the tank, too, as it has yet to open in Germany, Italy, and Japan.
That’s damned rock-solid for a R-rated horror film. Like the article notes, it’s surpassed The Exorcist and as noted, the film hasn’t opened yet in Germany, Italy and Japan - three countries where horror flicks traditionally do quite well.

Any why is kneeling ‘disrespectful’?
I sense the real problem some people have with the kneeling part is just that it’s different. If the ‘accepted’ posture during the singing of the anthem was kneeling, and someone wanted to stand instead there would be equal outrage. Maybe some people feel that by kneeling or doing something other than standing the person is drawing attention to themselves when the focus of the anthem is supposed to be unity or the nation, not the individual.
Of course some people bitching are just dicks.

I don’t know if we discussed this story earlier:
Basically, the EEOC will be representing Kaetoya Williams in a discrimination lawsuit. Ms. Williams was offered a job at the “Georgia Blue” restaurant chain. However, she was fired from the job when she did not wear blue jeans to work, per the employee dress code. Ms. Williams is an Apostolic Christian and they believe women should wear skirts. Ms Williams offered to wear a blue jean skirt, but that wasn’t good enough for Georgia Blue. The EEOC says that Georgia Blue engaged in impermissible religious discrimination by not allowing a reasonable accommodation that would allow Ms. Williams to wear blue jean skirts to work.
I actually have zero problem with this. Barring some other argument* why blue jean skirts would be unacceptable, I think this is a reasonable accommodation. What surprised me is the reaction from so-called Christians (I picked this up on the Facebook page of a Christian personality). In their minds, this woman was not a true Christian because she believes in wearing skirts. And because she’s not a true Christian, she can’t possibly have a religious discrimination complaint. Here’s the discussion from FB:
As I said in my response, the EEOC doesn’t care about deciding the truth of religious doctrine. All it cares about is that the woman has a religious belief and the employer should provide a reasonable accommodation. Apparently this is a mystery to these people.
* In law school we were taught to look for those arguments.

re: #168 Aucun pays pour les vieux ennemis
The trailers look amazing. I just wonder if Ford has a death-scene in his contract again.
Don’t know, but I do know that IGN had very high praise for Ford’s performance, saying:
As for Deckard, and Harrison Ford for that matter, it takes a while to get to him, but the infamous mystery surrounding the character and the events of the 1982 film are the mountain that 2049 builds upon. And when Ford finally does show up, it is well worth the wait. This is not phoned-in Ford or my-agent-told-me-I-should-do-this Ford. No, this is Ford the legend, who brings a quiet, sort of gut-wrenching interpretation to Deckard and what he must’ve gone through in the past three decades.
They give it a 9.7/10 and said “…is a sequel that never should have happened, but it’s defied all odds to become one of the best ever.”

re: #169 mmmirele

So, in that one comment, the person makes a comment about she should have known the job dress code before applying and the company should not have to allow her to wear a jean skirt because someone else will come along and want another change for “religious clothing.”
Whut? Jean Skirts, or skirts in general are religious clothing now???

I’ve noticed that too. Of course, such judgements are purely subjective, but if it is indeed better than it’s predecessor, then Denis Villenueve and the rest of the crew and cast has achieved something that only a tiny handful of films have ever accomplished - being recognized as superior to the originals.

I saw that Dr. Seuss is trending. Apparently a librarian for an elementary school in Cambridge, MA declined to accept a gift from Melania Trump saying that they already have 9,000 volumes, there are schools that are more in need, and Seuss is a bit “cliche” and contains “racist images.”
It was a dumb thing to do and dumber to say, but apparently now everybody on the left thinks Dr. Seuss is racist (he did, in fact, produce some anti-Japanese propaganda, IIRC, during the war). No where near as dumb as his supporters. We have a crisis in Puerto Rico but he’s tweeting nonsense and clearly is not engaged at all. Who cares about the NFL when Americans are dying because of our incompetent management in the face of catastrophe? Prosecutors in the Slender Man stabbing have reached a plea agreement that will avoid a trial for the second girl charged in the case.
Morgan Geyser, 15, was scheduled to go before a jury next month, but will instead plead guilty as charged but not be held criminally liable, and instead remain at the state mental hospital where she has been getting treatment for about 18 months.

re: #195 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.
Yes, we shall use the awesome power of the right-wing boycott machine to destroy free enterprise and usher in a golden age of SOCIALISM!!!!!1!111!one
…Wait. Have ANY right-wing boycotts worked?
It’s arguable that the constant fear of right wing boycotts is ingrained into America’s culture.
America’s culture is a thing - a huge creation that stamps around the world and affects the rest of the world probably more than America’s military or economy. It’s a Culture, not a culture. And this Culture is the collective creation of the American media and American marketing, forces so powerful and pervasive that this Culture now defines American politics and world affairs, not the other way around. This Culture seeks to reinforce and repeat a dominant paradigm at all times - a paradigm where white people find food while black people loot, where white criminals are honour students and lone wolves, where beautiful white women and strong white men on your television tell you soothing things about your worldview and scary things about the Others, and we can always look forward to the next sanitised holiday, a white Christmas or Thanksgiving or Fourth of July. Yes, there’s a place for some diversity in this Culture, such as a few good-looking black people on television to counterpoint the dominant race, and there’s a black culture too, one that belongs to Those People, and where we can look into it like through a window, where we can like their music and their clothes but where we can stay safe from all the crimes that Those People commit, and since They have Their culture and all, why do they have to be so noisy about their so-called problems, and Those other Hispanic People have their culture too that we can look at from the safety of our Culture, and I suppose those Asians have a culture too, but it looks weird and doesn’t play well on TV. FOX is the most blatant about this, but this maintenance of the Culture paradigm is the fault of all American media.
I used to wonder why the other networks and media outlets so slavishly followed FOX, trying to compete for the same gullible cultist demographic. Now I know - because FOX is only refining the American Culture to its most pure, distilled form, a shot of 100 proof Culture so thick it’s poisonous. Running counter to that would be to literally go against everything that is American, and even if it might be successful, to do so would be unthinkable. It would be like suddenly deciding to broadcast in Swahili - CNN, the NYT, and the rest have defined American Culture for so long that they and it are inseparable now. When a more pure, more toxic Culture product comes along, they can’t try to redefine it and throw out decades of work, the only choice is to double down. When a purer version of crack hits the street, you can’t sell people on Crack Classic - you have to sell the same thing and make it about branding. And so we keep hearing about economic anxiety, and trying to understand Trumpers, and emails, and kneeling, and anything that won’t require white Americans to take a hard look in a mirror, because even if we think right wing boycotts don’t work, the fear of ostracising themselves from America’s Culture keeps all forms of media and government firmly toeing the line.

re: #290 Sir John Barron
I hadn’t really thought about it until recently, but the right’s attempt to conflate the flag with the troop with the country and the supposed ideals (“supposed” in the sense that they believe specific ideals apply), is really disturbing. I’ve had this conversation with my Republican family members and they don’t see the disconnect in “they fought and died for your rights” as part of an argument that amounts to you can’t exercise those rights here.
Deep down, though they won’t admit it, I think a lot of this has to do with what the protests were originally about. Republicans (read: white people; but I repeat myself) don’t want to face the underlying issue of police brutality and the stark differences in how they and people of color experience this American life.
I saw a clip on twitter (can’t find it now, and forget if someone here posted it) from someone at the NFL network that pointed out had Kaepernick announced he was kneeling because of how our veterans are treated when they come back, the reaction would be entirely different. I fully believe that.

Another reason Republicans hate educated people: dailykos.com. Betsy DeVos showed up at Harvard. The students held a quiet protest. One asked her this:
Student: So, You’re a billionaire with lots and lots of investments, and the so-called “school choice” movement is a way to open the floodgates for corporate interests to make money off the backs of students. How much do you expect your net worth to increase as a result of your policy choices and what are your friends on Wall Street and in the business world—like the Koch brothers—saying about the potential to get rich off the backs of students?

re: #314 Belafon
What do you mean by serialized?
Sitcoms have typically used the episodic formula, in part because of syndication. The basic idea is that each episode is more or less self contained, so you can basically watch any episode from any season at any time and you don’t really need the context of everything else happening. So you can watch basically any episode of I Love Lucy or Gilligan’s Island or Cheers or Seinfeld or Friends without much context because it doesn’t really matter beyond “oh is this the season that Ross and Rachel were together?”
Serialization has mostly been the format that dramas take, episode 1 builds into episode 2, which builds into 3 and so on. Basically, stories unfold over the course of a season (or more) rather than an episode.
But in recent years, especially with streaming services allowing viewers to binge watch shows, sitcoms have been able to develop more long term stories with actual character development.

Trump’s tax plan continues to get panned by any and all tax experts. The only ones touting this nonsense are the Grover Norquist and GOPers who think that they can scam their way into destroying the government’s finances through mass redistribution of wealth to the rich and shifting all the burdens to everyone else.
We’ve seen numerous reports showing that people making $100,000 would get screwed by Trump’s plan - and that the rich absolutely make out like bandits no matter how everything else shakes out on the tax rate cuts and the passthrough entity rate cuts.
In fact, the bottom 35% of taxpayers would see no improvement, or worse, might actually pay higher taxes as a result of Trump’s toxic tax plan.
So, to recap, the only group of people who will clearly benefit from this are millionaires like Trump. Everyone else might see minimal tax improvements, or are completely fucked.
How do I conclude they’d be fucked?
Well, let’s assume this monstrosity passes and is enacted into law. The GOP is predicating their entire scheme on higher economic growth to paper over the massive debt they’ll be raising (and some have already admitted this would happen). The GOP would then use the massive debt as a trigger to force massive cuts in the safety net.
So, the entire burden of these tax cuts on to everyone but the rich, who will continue their profligate ways and fund a decreasing amount of government.

Any show that has a sustained run has to have developments like that - like Ross and Rachel or Chandler and Monica on Friends. So big themes might develop but it’s wholly different from a long term story told over several episodes. So if you look at a show like The Good Place or Vice Principals or even The Ranch, you can’t really just jump into season 2 without having seen season 1.

OK. But back to your original point, I think Big Bang Theory fits into the episodic mold enough that it shows that not only can they survive, they can do well.
Where I see Will & Grace failing is that they were unique and groundbreaking. Now, we have a show that has the patriarch in his second marriage to a Latino, with a gay son who’s married and has an adopted daughter. I’m not sure how they overcome being normal.

How many supermarkets have power?
How many gas stations have power?
How many customers are still without power?
How many people are without potable water?
How many water purification systems have been deployed (volume and total number)?
These are basic facts that need to be assessed. We’re more than a week out and Trump’s excuse is that Puerto Rico is an island.
The US did far more and far more quickly in responding to the SE Asian tsunami in Indonesia, the quake/tsunami in Japan, and the Haiti earthquake than Trump’s done thus far.
At every step of the way, Trump has reinforced his delusional worldview and his advisers are saying he’s doing great. Reality is that he’s done gone and fucked up and lives are at risk and he simply doesn’t care enough to send the best.

Question:
If the Rs get this horrible tax plan through - when does it get applied? Fiscal year 2018-19? They cant affect taxes that are going to be file in April 2018 can they?
Yes they can.
re: #352 Belafon
I think episodic shows can still do well, to be sure, but my sense is that there is going to be a move away from that format. Ultimately, with any show, it comes down to good story telling and good acting.
As for your point about Will & Grace, that’s a whole different issue. Part of it is the nostalgia thing I mentioned before: I want it to go away, I was there for the first run, don’t need to check back in. In the case of this show, the world has changed quite a lot in the time they’ve been gone so what made them interesting the first time around makes them more or less normal this time. That’s going to be tough for the writers.

The smart thing to do would be to phase them in so as not to hit voters with sticker shock next April. But they’re not smart, so don’t be surprised if any tax “reform” is set to take effect as quickly as possible.

At their current rate of ‘progress’, US Republicans will become as evil as Weimar-era Nazis in a few months.

I want a cat. It’s been 2 years since we lost ours.
Kid wants a cat. Told him that when he graduates, and starts work, he can get a cat and be responsible for all the $$ bills. and the litter box.
He’ll probably do it, as he is at heart, a cat person.

My cat was picked on a lot by my other cats when she was smaller, and she’s really happy as a solo cat now, so I feel like I can’t bring any new cats into the house.

They can have it apply to the 2017 tax year, or they can start it with the 2018 tax years. It all depends on how fucked up they want things to get, because they’ll give the IRS and all state tax authorities no time to address the changes before the return due dates in March/April 2018.
All the tax prep groups/firms would need to get the changes done too. They typically spend 4Q of each year readying the software for tax season, but they’d scramble to do the changes.

You’re not seriously suggesting cats are $10 each?
I don’t have to have been a cat owner to realize you’ve misplaced a decimal point.
Bulk rate, and since NYC is a sanctuary city you can underpay the herders…

I have a rock dove on my balcony. And it’s not leaving.
I’ll take a photo tomorrow morning if it’s still there. It has a band on its right leg, I saw that earlier. It’s been there for about five hours now.
Weird.

We are at our limit of pets for the homeowners assoc. One more and we are still legal as far as the village is concerned, but not the homeowners assoc. A cat that doesn’t go outside won’t draw attention.

Unfortunately most GOP actually believe that tax cuts are magical.
That is true. But the GOP leadership has yet again produced a hideously unpopular plan to give massive tax cuts to the rich by raising taxes on the middle class, and there will be a handful of vulnerable GOP Senators in purple and blue states who will have a problem with that.
