He worked for a law firm that had Alfa Bank as a client. That is not the same as “working for the Russians,” but considering the connexions, is worth looking in to.
Wikipedia notes he has been nominated for the Criminal Division of the DOJ; it does not say he was confirmed for that position.
He has been placed on the Congressional calendar for consideration. That is not the same as “he has the job.” He was not confirmed today.
The Washington Post reported back at the end of July this guy was nominated. At the time he acknowledged his work with the law firm on behalf of Alfa Bank to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The tweet above is untrue (he has not been confirmed). If the standard for confirmation of a position is “never worked for a criminal as a lawyer,” an awful lot of lawyers representing criminal clients could not get appointed to anything. Same goes for those who work for the lawyers.
The person certainly requires scrutiny in light of what’s going on, but Alfa Bank is allowed to hire lawyers to represent it, just as any other corporation is. He worked for a law firm, not Alfa Bank.

From what I understand of Amb. Martin, he refused to believe the military reports and intelligence coming in on the success of the North Vietnamese invasion. As such, he made the evacuation much worse than it had to be (and caused a lot of deaths).
Compare that with today, where we have the same political party refusing to believe the intelligence reports coming in on the success of Russian infiltration of our election.

What I am noting is that with the widely-publicised acts in other states that show unequal policing occurs, the question of unequal policing comes up in every state.
For every action of injustice amongst the police, concerns about unfair policing come up everywhere else.
Perhaps it is not fair to the police in every place that the actions of police in other places are misbehaving, but it begs the question of “if they aren’t fair in other places, are they fair in mine?”

I sense the real problem some people have with the kneeling part is just that it’s different. If the ‘accepted’ posture during the singing of the anthem was kneeling, and someone wanted to stand instead there would be equal outrage. Maybe some people feel that by kneeling or doing something other than standing the person is drawing attention to themselves when the focus of the anthem is supposed to be unity or the nation, not the individual.

The Seuss issue is complicated. As I recall reading, he apologized for the past anti-Japanese cartoons. As for them being cliche, I have to disagree, I think they spark interest in reading and have some good lessons for kids but the librarian’s criticisms aren’t without reason and facts either.

No, it’s ATT. I just got stuck in a loop with therm. I got a message my session had expired please log in again. Now I keep getting repeating messages that from time to time I will be asked to login again as a security measure. That one I never saw before. So, just out of frustration I went back to my att. net landing page and saw I was still logged in there, clicked on the email folder and my email page opened without any logging in.
I called ATT and asked them what the hell is going on? The tech said he saw they were having a lot of email issues this morning.

I used to wonder why the other networks and media outlets so slavishly followed FOX, trying to compete for the same gullible cultist demographic. Now I know - because FOX is only refining the American Culture to its most pure, distilled form, a shot of 100 proof Culture so thick it’s poisonous. Running counter to that would be to literally go against everything that is American, and even if it might be successful, to do so would be unthinkable. It would be like suddenly deciding to broadcast in Swahili - CNN, the NYT, and the rest have defined American Culture for so long that they and it are inseparable now. When a more pure, more toxic Culture product comes along, they can’t try to redefine it and throw out decades of work, the only choice is to double down. When a purer version of crack hits the street, you can’t sell people on Crack Classic - you have to sell the same thing and make it about branding. And so we keep hearing about economic anxiety, and trying to understand Trumpers, and emails, and kneeling, and anything that won’t require white Americans to take a hard look in a mirror, because even if we think right wing boycotts don’t work, the fear of ostracising themselves from America’s Culture keeps all forms of media and government firmly toeing the line.

I hadn’t really thought about it until recently, but the right’s attempt to conflate the flag with the troop with the country and the supposed ideals (“supposed” in the sense that they believe specific ideals apply), is really disturbing. I’ve had this conversation with my Republican family members and they don’t see the disconnect in “they fought and died for your rights” as part of an argument that amounts to you can’t exercise those rights here.
Deep down, though they won’t admit it, I think a lot of this has to do with what the protests were originally about. What do you mean by serialized?
Sitcoms have typically used the episodic formula, in part because of syndication. The basic idea is that each episode is more or less self contained, so you can basically watch any episode from any season at any time and you don’t really need the context of everything else happening. So you can watch basically any episode of I Love Lucy or Gilligan’s Island or Cheers or Seinfeld or Friends without much context because it doesn’t really matter beyond “oh is this the season that Ross and Rachel were together?”
Serialization has mostly been the format that dramas take, episode 1 builds into episode 2, which builds into 3 and so on. Basically, stories unfold over the course of a season (or more) rather than an episode.
But in recent years, especially with streaming services allowing viewers to binge watch shows, sitcoms have been able to develop more long term stories with actual character development.

Trump’s tax plan continues to get panned by any and all tax experts. The only ones touting this nonsense are the Grover Norquist and GOPers who think that they can scam their way into destroying the government’s finances through mass redistribution of wealth to the rich and shifting all the burdens to everyone else.
We’ve seen numerous reports showing that people making $100,000 would get screwed by Trump’s plan - and that the rich absolutely make out like bandits no matter how everything else shakes out on the tax rate cuts and the passthrough entity rate cuts.
In fact, the bottom 35% of taxpayers would see no improvement, or worse, might actually pay higher taxes as a result of Trump’s toxic tax plan.
So, to recap, the only group of people who will clearly benefit from this are millionaires like Trump. Everyone else might see minimal tax improvements, or are completely fucked.
How do I conclude they’d be fucked?
Well, let’s assume this monstrosity passes and is enacted into law. The GOP is predicating their entire scheme on higher economic growth to paper over the massive debt they’ll be raising (and some have already admitted this would happen). The GOP would then use the massive debt as a trigger to force massive cuts in the safety net.
So, the entire burden of these tax cuts on to everyone but the rich, who will continue their profligate ways and fund a decreasing amount of government.

So big themes might develop but it’s wholly different from a long term story told over several episodes. So if you look at a show like The Good Place or Vice Principals or even The Ranch, you can’t really just jump into season 2 without having seen season 1.

These are basic facts that need to be assessed. We’re more than a week out and Trump’s excuse is that Puerto Rico is an island.
The US did far more and far more quickly in responding to the SE Asian tsunami in Indonesia, the quake/tsunami in Japan, and the Haiti earthquake than Trump’s done thus far.
At every step of the way, Trump has reinforced his delusional worldview and his advisers are saying he’s doing great. Reality is that he’s done gone and fucked up and lives are at risk and he simply doesn’t care enough to send the best.

I think episodic shows can still do well, to be sure, but my sense is that there is going to be a move away from that format. Ultimately, with any show, it comes down to good story telling and good acting.
As for your point about Will & Grace, that’s a whole different issue. Part of it is the nostalgia thing I mentioned before: I want it to go away, I was there for the first run, don’t need to check back in. In the case of this show, the world has changed quite a lot in the time they’ve been gone so what made them interesting the first time around makes them more or less normal this time. That’s going to be tough for the writers.

They can have it apply to the 2017 tax year, or they can start it with the 2018 tax years. It all depends on how fucked up they want things to get, because they’ll give the IRS and all state tax authorities no time to address the changes before the return due dates in March/April 2018.
All the tax prep groups/firms would need to get the changes done too. They typically spend 4Q of each year readying the software for tax season, but they’d scramble to do the changes.
