Trump Fans Circulate Fake Photo of NFL Players Burning a US Flag

WTF • Views: 52,612

Today we find Trump fans on both Facebook and Twitter circulating an obviously fake photograph, with the caption “No more NFL,” purportedly showing Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett burning a US flag in a locker room while other players stand around and cheer.

As I write this, the fake image has been shared on Facebook nearly 5,000 times, and the counter is still increasing rapidly even though many commenters are pointing out that it’s a fake. And the account that posted it, “Vets for Trump,” has more than 100,000 followers.

The original photo was lifted from this page at the Seattle Seahawks site, and shows Bennett doing a post-game victory dance.

Let’s cut right through the haze here and state it outright: Donald Trump has loosed a torrent of racist smears from his base of bigoted supporters, and this is just the latest eruption.

Carter, who played Wonder Woman on the 1970s show of the same name, posted a statement to her Facebook telling Cameron to stop dissing the movie:

Student Loan Defaults Increase For First Time In Five Years; 8.5M Borrowers Now In Default

For the first time in half a decade, the rate of education loan defaults among recent college students has risen, highlighting the struggle many recent graduates face when it comes to paying their educational debts.

A new report from the Department of Education found there was a slight increase in the percentage of borrowers who are defaulting on their student loans within three years of entering repayment. This is known as the cohort default rate.

According to the report, among the more than five million borrowers who entered repayment in 2014, 11.5% (or 580,671) defaulted on their loans.

The new figure is up slightly from the 11.3% (or 593,182) of students who entered repayment in 2013 and subsequently defaulted in 2015.

That the underlying culture of these games is in fact quite reactionary. It doesn’t necessarily have to be that way, but as it’s been constructed, the Professional Sports Industrial Complex (I include college sports in this as well) is a Frankenstein monster of violence, dominance, fundamentalist religion, misogyny, and overall social control. And like much of America’s wealth in the 18th and 19th centuries, it’s being built largely on the back of black labor.

I figured with the recent new members issue that went on here I better introduce myself before going on my rant as to hopefully put to bed my sincerity going forward. I have been a lurker on this site since around 2009 but never took the plunge to post because I usually refrain from posting on the internet all together. But I find myself struggling to keep my frustrations with current events from boiling over so this place seemed like the most sane place to unload my frustrations. With all the things this administration has done so far it feels almost comical to argue that Trump going after the NFL protesters is thing that has me the most scared. I am not trying to belittle the Russian angle or North Korea mess but I think its fair to say that the only people still behind him on those issues are his crazy base and the corrupt Republican party. Him going after the players is resonating with more than just the crazies. Wrapping yourself in the flag and bringing in the troops always wins in this country.

This is about “patriotism”—in the form of ritualized actions—being used as a convenient bludgeon to silence dissent. As such, there’s no incentive on the part of the accuser to ever acknowledge patriotism by the accused, or even to set a clear bar of “this is patriotism” to be cleared.

The trick here is the way National Anthem etiquette is being elided to “support the troops” and both are elided to “and therefore don’t respect the sacrificed lives that help protect the nation.” This isn’t an argument in good faith about patriotism, it’s cynical and bad-faith misdirection. The argument rests on a series of “therefore” claims, where the accuser ignores pertinent data (what each player has said about what they’re doing and why) and treats their subjective “read” of events as requiring no justification.

Privilege is all about being able to declare what is “normal” and “status quo” without reality testing, about subjective impressions and feelings treated as “true.” The first move made against Kapernick, et al, was to completely ignore what they said about their actions, and the second was to ignore the short- and long-term context*.

*and by long-term context, I mean going back as far as Douglass’ “What is the 4th of July to a slave?

The name of White Settlement originated as a result of there being two settlements in the area: one occupied predominantly by Native Americans (near where Fort Worth is located today), and the other one being occupied by white settlers. The latter settlement received the name “White Settlement” as a way to distinguish itself from the Native American settlement. The city was incorporated in 1941.

On October 14, 2005, city leaders announced a plan to have local voters decide on a possible name change for the town from White Settlement to West Settlement. In the November 8 election, the name change was overwhelmingly rejected by a vote of 2,388 to 219.

Assuming Puerto Ricans opt for statehood, here’s what I think would be a good way forward:

1. Puerto Rico is made a state (possibly incorporating the Virgin Islands)
2. DC is made a state, we can name it Columbia and exempt the National Mall, White House, Congress, Supreme Court and other federal buildings
3. The size of the House is increased from 435 members to 441 (one Rep for Columbia, five for PR/VI) until 2020; after the census, the House is increased to 475 members and reapportioned accordingly for 2022

I’m not sure what we do with our Pacific territories like Guam and American Samoa.

Sports has been a major part of my life being raised by a football/basketball coach and playing competitively through college so maybe this issue is hitting home more for me. I just know too many people right now that otherwise would despise Trump. Instead he has life long die hard sports fans I know turning off the games.

I don’t know those people, but I have doubts that they would otherwise ‘despise Trump’. In all the news stories and of all the people I have met and talked to, I haven’t ever seen or heard of anyone who would oppose Trump and Trumpism except for one issue. There are many who say they would, such as saying they’d definitely vote against Trump except for the abortions/vets/emails, but once you ask a few more questions, that’s definitely not the only issue.

The thing is, being a Trumper, or cultist, or whatever term you want to use, isn’t about any issues at all. There isn’t a single issue that isn’t negotiable. You could turn around tomorrow and broadcast from every pulpit, news network, and radio station that abortion was actually now fine and only liberals are against abortion, and 95% of them would change their minds overnight, and insist that they’d never believed any different. There is no issue that ‘turns’ people into Trumpers, just like calling people racists or Nazis doesn’t make them racist Nazis. This is because being a cultist isn’t about any issue at all. It’s about the feeling of being free to hate. It’s about your news sources and your subculture being about hatred of other people, liberals, brown people, gays, or whatever. It may be a cordial hate or a full blown violent one, but what they want is the feeling of being free to hate, not being judged or ‘oppressed’ by having to hold their bile back. In some cases this hate is ingrained, and the cultist came to the cult because they were offering what he already had. In other cases this hate is taught, by listening to Rush every day or watching FOX 24/7 or by constantly reading what other cultists send you on Facebook. But it is not about any issue, be it abortion, football, or economic anxiety. It is about hate. Your friends and neighbours aren’t feeling economically anxious, or exasperated about politics. What they want is to hate, and specifically to hate you. And me. And anyone who their subculture tells them to hate.

My wife worked in an Alzheimer ward before we met. Every she watches tRump on TV she says he speaks and acts like people in early forms of dementia. For those who have been speculating that Trump’s got an idea to carve p Puerto Rico - Josh Marshall is having the same thoughts.

Set aside the irony of someone who has made a career and a fortune out of skipping on his own debts pressing an embattled American territory on its debt obligations. This and other comments about the Puerto Rico crisis make it look very much like Trump plans to use the disaster as a wedge to enforce a massive wave of privatization on the Island. His comments, hints and overall attitude suggest he’s looking at the crisis not as a public emergency on US territory but more like the way a rival business looks at a distressed competitor that needs a rescue, with all the maximization of pressure and advantage that entails.

I would normally completely agree with you. For someone to overlook the numerous examples of Trump being absolute horrible human being just because he is espousing obvious faux patriotism seems unlikely. I concede that my social circle or public interactions aren’t indicative of the rest of the world as well so maybe my experiences is the exception. But yes I do know at least a dozen people who up to this point has been completely anti-Trump but he has them on this one. He Can’t Even Fake It

Because many sociopaths are actually quite adept at demonstrations of empathy. They don’t feel it. But they can mimic the behavior. That’s what gets me. Trump can’t even pretend. Even your garden variety jerk politician can put on a show of hugs and supportive words. Trump can’t.

It’s like watching a person who has profound social awkwardness in a meet and greet situation at a cocktail party. It’s painful. But again, with Trump it’s not social awkwardness. It’s a basic, seemingly fundamental inability not only to experience but even to fake the experience of empathy or human concern. That additional part is what is remarkable to me.

Perhaps the tr*mp/GOP plan for Puerto Rico is to depopulate it via poor response to a natural disaster, and then sell off the entire island to tr*mp or his cronies for a song.

tr*mp is essentially a real estate scammer, so this would appeal to him enormously.

especially if he can get the government to foot the bill to restore the infrastructure.
