I also have to laugh at how blatantly they’re all parroting the same damn talking point. It’s obvious not a one of them can think for themselves.

I actually think it’s a credit to McCain that he’s having Bush and Obama speak at his service considering both are whom prevented him from obtaining office. I don’t like McCain but I sincerely do hope his last days are peaceful surrounded by loved ones.

I likely won’t mourn him for a second once he’s gone. But it’s weird there’s a chance that, once Congress starts the usual memorial resolutions for him, there could be more votes to honor him on the Democratic side of the aisle than on the Republican one…

I was glad to see Biden visited. It was my understanding their relationship was strained a little. I don’t see myself mourning him either but I certainly will express my condolences to his family. He’s a far better man than Trump could dream to be.

I wish him a peaceful end, but I do not look forward to the canonizing that will likely take place. I think much of his political “persona” as a maverick and a straight talker was manufactured by the media, and they will perpetuate it after he’s gone.

In college I had roommates who attended Manhattan debutante balls over winter break because they were part of the “society.” Turns out they were decent people and I like them both by the end of our time together. Both are dead now. They did shitloads of blow and never really shook their addictions (both were clean for awhile later).

She didn’t call him a “secret Muslim,” she called him an Arab. And McCain could have said something to the effect that he’s not, but what if he were—instead, he said, “No ma’am, he’s a decent family man” as if the two are mutually exclusive.

Yeah, it was better (much better) than anything most of his Republican cohorts have said about Obama, but that “history will be extremely kind to him” for that little conversation just makes me shake my head at how very low the bar is.

Instead of watching Judge Pirro I’m watching rerun of “Parts Unknown” from last week. Anthony gives a very understandable portrait of West Virginia miner communities. Included is the reality that West Virginia is probably more ethnically diverse than my (relatively) new home of New Hampshire. You can understand why they voted against Hillary. Then he asks if they want their children to mine: “nope, there’s no future in it.” To be fair, I’ll bet a room of professors would say the same thing.

Listening to the call, it doesn’t sound as much outright malicious as just reflexively afraid of the world, and maybe even vaguely aware that she’s doing the wrong thing. That’s why I want to hear this woman’s story, and why I’m open to the possibility that she could learn something from this experience.

Am I being naive? Maybe. But there are certain levels of cynicism to which I just can’t bring myself to sink, even on a Saturday night.

Orac doesn’t mince words about Dr. Oz….

Why does he do it, one might ask, and I suspect a lot is revealed in his manifesto, a chilling combo of various postmodernist relativist bullshit: “Medicine is a very religious experience. I have my religion and you have yours. It becomes difficult for us to agree on what we think works, since so much of it is in the eye of the beholder. Data is rarely clean. You find the arguments that support your data, and it’s my fact versus your fact.” No, it isn’t - but the sentiment explains quite a bit about how woomeisters think.

Diagnosis: One of the most dangerous cranks alive. No less.

re: #98 ipsos

Sometimes things get blown up beyond what anyone intended. There was a piece on This American Life this afternoon on an incident involving an Oakland, CA high school back in the 90s. A group of about 70 mostly black and Hispanic kids were taken to see Schindler’s List at a theater-with no real preparation or understanding of what it was about. At one point some of the students laughed at what they considered overacting when a women was shot in the film. There were at least some family members of Holocaust survivors in the audience, and things went downhill from there with the students accused of anti-semitism, etc.

The point being that this woman who called the police on the students on the tour may be evil, but she may just have been overreacting and things spiraled out of control.

Yeah, it’s been a pretty crazy ride. I started reading sometime in late ‘05 or early ‘06, though I joined on 9/11/06. Round about then was when LGF seemed to be reaching peak wingnut. Of course, in 2008 Charles made public his break with the right, and then a bunch of the right-wing trolls got banned in short order in the Great Right-Wing Purge. It’s been a different place ever since.

Talked to my security guard friend yesterday. He shared an interesting observation: There are no black dumpster divers. He has worked at the biggest strip strip mall in the city for a couple of years. He encounters dumpster divers practically every night. Literally not a single one of them was black. What does this tell us about the experience of being black in the south? Others think nothing of a late night encounter with authority, usually a rather casual and friendly encounter at that, but not a single black person is prepared to risk it.

Yeah, it was better (much better) than anything most of his Republican cohorts have said about Obama, but that “history will be extremely kind to him” for that little conversation just makes me shake my head at how very low the bar is.

And when other Republicans did not call people out or take them to task for such utterances, it resulted in an attention-grabbing race to the bottom. And we still have not hit bottom as recent events have shown.

The entire subtext here — I’m waiting to see its basis — is that Trump Org has since the aughts been playing with a lot of cash it shouldn’t have, in ways uncommon to conventional real estate investing but common to money laundering operations

Trump’s real fear, when all is said and done, is that Mueller’s investigation will uncover the Trump Org’s (at least decade-long) money laundering activities and at that point, he stands to lose it all; all his money, all his assets, the whole enchilada, all gone if he were to be found guilty of money laundering.

Friday, the university’s police released the audio of the 911 call in which the parent reports 19-year-old Thomas Kanewakeron Gray and 17-year-old Lloyd Skanahwati Gray. She says their behavior is odd and that they’re wearing “black clothing.” The school also released footage of officers pulling the teens out of the group to question them.

Honestly why the hell are people calling 911 at all for non emergencies and why are the cops humoring that fuckery in the first place. I’ve literally only called 911 a couple of times that I can recall, once here when my Dad fell and suffered an interochanteric hip fracture and once in Seattle when I witnessed an aggravated domestic assault in the parking lot below my apartment’s kitchen window. 911 doesn’t exist for people to voice their vague suspicions, it’s there for real shit.

Argentine central bank raises interest rate to 40%.

bbc.com

Argentina’s central bank has raised interest rates for the third time in eight days as the country’s currency, the peso, continues to fall sharply.

On Friday, the bank hiked rates to 40% from 33.25%, a day after they were raised from 30.25%. A week ago, they were raised from 27.25%.

The rises are aimed at supporting the peso, which has lost a quarter of its value over the past year.

Analysts say the crisis is escalating and looks set to continue.

He mimicked gunmen summoning and shooting victims one by one, saying “Boom! Come over here!” and using his hand to imitate a gun being fired.

In reality, the attackers sprayed many of their 130 victims with semi-automatic fire and set off bomb belts.

The French foreign ministry called for the victims’ memory to be respected.

“France expresses its firm disapproval of the comments by President Trump about the attacks of 13 November 2015 in Paris and asks for the memory of the victims to be respected,” the foreign ministry said.

Holy shit.

Sounds like hyperinflation is on its way.

I’m going through national Argentine newspapers, and the only thing I can find about Bitcoin or any other “criptomonedas” is articles about their extreme volatility, and one opinion piece from today, speaking of an opportunity with the high inflation rate.

Iran’s Rohani Predicts Historic Remorse if US Abandons Nuclear Deal (Radio Free Europe):

Iran’s President Hassan Rohani says the United States would regret leaving the 2015 nuclear agreement and that his country has prepared plans to respond to any decision by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the landmark accord.

“We have plans to resist any decision by Trump on the nuclear accord,” Rohani said in a May 6 speech in northwestern Iran that was carried live by state television.

“If America leaves the nuclear accord, you will see soon that this will entail historic remorse for it,” he added.

Rohani did not specify how Iran would react if the United States abandons the deal. But he said he had given “the necessary orders,” notably to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, in anticipation of Trump’s decision.

This ought to work well:

Boris Johnson in US for Talks to Save Iran Deal (BBC)

Boris Johnson is flying to Washington to urge the US not to scrap the international deal designed to prevent Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

The UK and its European allies have until 12 May to persuade President Donald Trump to stick with the deal.

Mr Trump has strongly criticised the agreement, which he calls “insane”.

In a call with Theresa May on Saturday, the president “underscored his commitment to ensure that Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon”.

Stormy Daniels warns Trump on SNL ‘storm’s a coming baby’ (BBC)

US porn star Stormy Daniels has made a surprise appearance on US TV show Saturday Night Live as her legal wrangle with President Trump over an alleged affair continues.

Playing herself in the latest in the show’s series of sketches lampooning the president, she mocked him, saying: “I know you don’t believe in climate change but a storm’s a coming baby.”

Ms Daniels was paid $130,000 by Mr Trump’s lawyer in 2016 to keep quiet.

Mr Trump denies the affair.

Franklin Graham: Trump’s Affair with Stormy Daniels is “Nobody’s Business”

Yunno, in the most general sense, what consenting adults do for fun in private in their spare time should be nobody’s business.

The only reason this affair should be anybody’s business at all is that there seems to be a violation of campaign finance law involved.

On the other hand, Donald Trump is more than just another private businessman, he is a media personality and now a public servant, so that makes his private life more than fair game.

Princess Anne travelled to the Isle of Islay (Scotland) to mark the deaths of over seven hundred men in two shipwrecks during WW1, including many Americans. The first was sunk by a German U-boat, the second was sunk in a storm where a RN vessel rammed a troop ship.

bbc.com

The islanders at the time in a town of 1,100 were overwhelmed by the two disasters.

Because the islanders wanted to bury the American men with dignity, and no American flag was available, women sewed an American flag at the time to mark their funerals when the islanders buried them.

The flag now resides at the Smithsonian Institute. The Institute is loaning the flag back to the Islay Museum later in the year for the 100th anniversary of the second sinking.

The James Webb telescope has been delayed, the launch is now planned for next year.

Yes, it will use infra-red, not visible light. As such, it needs an elaborate shield from the sun, and also active cooling.

Because it will be put in an orbit much farther from Earth than many other telescopes (like Hubble), there will be no fixing it once it is launched, so it has to be on spec at launch.

Primary mission is cosmology and exoplanets. Yes, it ought to be able to observe the first formation of galaxies (events which are now redshifted far outside human vision.)

The JWST will also be able to image protoplanetary disks around new stars, a neat thing.

And it will be able to do spectroscopy on planets transiting their stars, giving clues to the planetary atmospheres.

All neat stuff, but very expensive. It is the primary astronomical mission of the US now for several years, sucking up the big bucks.

We hopes the launch goes well and that it works.

I’m way late on this, and I don’t know if it’s the same everywhere, but it used to be you could call the police in your precinct and they would at a minimum know where you were and how to get there. For the last 35 years, at least in Seattle/King County, the cops have had an unlisted number, and the only way to communicate with them is 911.

You’re talking to a dispatcher somewhere to hell and gone in the South End, you can’t explain to them where you’re located, and if you’re not reporting a murder, they’ll either laugh in your face or threaten you with what the penalty is for making a frivolous 911 call. Or both.

We only got 911 service here in 2012.

I’ve only called 911 twice in my life: Once I accidentally triggered my Commodore 64’s modem to dial it (and the Virginia Beach Police showed up to find out what was going on). the other was in Dallas on the freeway - a person left a car parked in a middle lane of the freeway with no lights at night.

Amid push to arm teachers, @AP review finds serious accidents involving adults who bring guns to school

DT talked about “highly trained” teachers carrying guns in schools, and that is the very crux of the situation: unless you are highly trained and experienced, with steady nerves and good situational awareness, a gun in a public active-shooter scenario is often less than worthless.

Arming teachers is the easy part: turning them into an effective deterrent is quite another.

Apparently they’re not going to prevent it. (I’m not sure how you could anyway: For example a nuclear blast’s damage is caused by the shock wave, which wouldn’t happen in space. Suggestions have been made about throwing repeated inert objects at one point on an asteroid to deflect it’s orbit, but that would take a lot of missiles and has never been tested.)

It depends on how much warning you have. The preferred method would be to rendezvous with a spacecraft whose gravitational effect would very gradually change the orbit of the object.

Blowing it to smithereens with a nuclear device, like the public seems to want, would be worse than useless, causing many catastrophic impacts instead of just one.

Detonating a nuclear device at just the right distance would cause a thin surface layer to vaporize, creating a thrust that would accelerate the object enough to deflect its orbit, given enough lead time. You’d have to know whether it was a consolidated object or just a loose pile of gravel for that to work.

We have no launch vehicles suitable for any of these missions, and despite a lot of talk, there’s been precisely zero action on developing any—unless the Big Fucking Rocket turns out to be a real thing….

For a spacecraft to have a gravitational effect, it would need to be Death Star-sized. But you could use the thrust of the spacecraft to alter the trajectory of the asteroid enough to miss hitting the Earth.

That is, if we had that kind of spacecraft just sitting around doing nothing.

Gravity Tractor. My skepticism is towards our knowing the orbit of a threatening object precisely enough to determine it would impact Earth that far in advance, or that any tiny change we could make would do more good than harm.

Interesting idea, but for it to work, you’d need to intercept the asteroid quite a ways out, depending on its momentum. And by quite a ways, I mean like past the orbit of Mars at least. A small deflection there would translate to a larger deflection as it approached Earth’s orbit.

To be really effective, we’d need to have such ships already in space, to save time and fuel. That would require Earthlings to be able to plan ahead for a disaster that might never happen in the lifetimes of anyone alive now. Our track record for such long-range planning is, well, non-existent at this point.

German High Schoolers Complain English Exam Was Too Hard (goes to the Scottsbluff, Nebr, Star-Herald):

BERLIN (AP) — High school students in Germany have been complaining in an online petition about their final exam in English, saying the test was much harder than in previous years.

As of Sunday, students in the southwestern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg had gathered almost 36,000 signatures — even though only 33,500 took last month’s statewide exam.

Students complained that text excerpts from American author Henry Roth’s 1934 novel “Call it Sleep” were too difficult and obscure to analyze and asked for the grading to be more lenient.

The final high school exams in Germany — called Abitur — are a rite of passage that all students who want to enter university have to pass.

State governor Winfried Kretschmann had only limited compassion for the students, saying “there’s no right to a simple Abitur [qualification exam].”

“Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”

One of the effects of constantly fighting wars without declaring them is that the United States has no enemies—hasn’t had since 1945.

As for the “levying war” part, if they couldn’t convict Aaron fucking Burr on that, it’s pretty much of a dead letter IMO.

One of the effects of constantly fighting wars without declaring them is that the United States has no enemies—hasn’t had since 1945.

As for the “levying war” part, if they couldn’t convict Aaron fucking Burr on that, it’s pretty much of a dead letter IMO.

Yeah, treason is pretty much a non-starter in the modern era. If you’re going to convict somebody of anything, it’s going to be related to illicit dealings with a foreign power.

Was the Soviet Union an ally? I didn’t think so. In any event, they were definitely guilty as fuck (though that didn’t come out until after the fall of the Berlin Wall), but there is some debate on whether they deserved execution, and the trial itself was a bit of a legal clusterfuck.

Doing some reading, it appears that the Espionage Act of 1917 (which is the current US law governing espionage) does not specifically say the espionage has to occur on behalf of a non-allied power; it simply says that “to convey information with intent to interfere with the operation or success of the armed forces of the United States or to promote the success of its enemies”. There’s a lesser clause that deals with interfering with the intent to cause mutiny or interfering with recruitment, but it does not specifically state that it is dependent on the subject to whom the information is being conveyed, or their status with the United States.

Facebook privacy: Survey suggests continuing US loyalty (BBC)

Most Facebook users in the US remain loyal, despite the recent data sharing scandal involving a political consultancy firm, a poll suggests.

Facebook admitted last month that the data of 87 million users had been improperly shared with the UK-based firm, Cambridge Analytica.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey found no clear loss or gain in use since then.

A quarter of Facebook users said they used it less or had left it but another quarter said they used it even more.

The remaining half said their use of the network had not changed.

However, the survey was limited to the US and analysts are waiting to see how the social media giant’s sales perform in the second quarter, when the scandal was at its height.

In the first quarter, its sales rose by nearly 50%, with profits reaching $4.9bn (£3.6bn) compared to $3bn last year.

“They don’t want the wall, but we’re going to get the wall, even if we have to think about closing up the country for a while,” Trump said. “We’re going to get the wall. We have no choice. We have absolutely no choice. And we’re going to get tremendous security in our country.

“Do you think his job includes lying to the American people because he continues to do so?” Tapper asked.

“He does many things,” Conway shot back. “You just want that to go viral and you want to say President Trump and lie in the same sentence.”

“No, I would like him to stop lying,” Tapper interrupted.

“He talked about the three American hostages [taken by North Korea] and how the Obama administration tried and failed to get them free,” Tapper then continued. “Two of the three were detained while Donald Trump was president so there is no way that Obama could have gotten them released because they were captured when Trump was president. That is just a lie and that tweet is still up there. That is just symbolic of the fact that this president gets in his own way all the time even when there is something good happening.”

Okay, so someone mentioned this “QAnon” thingy (That sounds so much like Star Trek fan fiction doesn’t it?) in a previous thread, and, although I’m loath to entertain RWNJ conspiracies, I thought “It seems to be at least as big as Pizzagate, so I might as well get up to speed on this madness.” I didn’t realise quite how mad it was going to be. Thankfully, there were couple of articles written by sane people that summarised this madness.

Is it me, or does this “QAnon” fellow seem like a Poe? That post from November 2017, the “We’re going to have martial law for a bit, whilst all the liberals are getting arrested” one, seems to me like an obvious Poe Tell.

427
Citizen K  May 6, 2018 • 10:37:22am

How hard is this for folks to understand, especially folks who hold themselves up as the soothsayers and fact checkers? WORDS MEAN THINGS. That’s why word choice is important, and why euphemism and weasel words exist. People love to dance around calling something what it is, while vaguely alluding to the ‘it’ in question, because it gives that magical thing called ‘plausible deniability’. It’s why you could get away with saying ‘making love’ on TV back in the day, but couldn’t outright call something sex, or even the dreaded F-word ‘fucking’. Yeah, it implies it, but that vagueness allows for the dodge.

So why is it so fucking hard for people to understand that failing to call something a ‘lie’ gives the liars room to soften the accusation and make it palatable enough to get a pass? Calling a lie a ‘lie’ is important…and I know they’re not really adverse to the word because they used it toward Hillary all the goddamn motherfucking time.

You can be the CEO of a coal company and cheap out on safety systems that caused the deaths of 29 miners. Then you can be tossed into jail and claim you are a political prisoner and that it was all a sham.

And, after all of that…you can run for the Senate seat in West Virginia only to be loved by the same sort of people you killed.

Michael Flynn cancels Montana campaign appearance

BILLINGS, Mont. — President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn has cancelled a campaign appearance in Montana for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Troy Downing.

In a video posted by Downing’s campaign, Flynn cited a family emergency for the cancellation of his scheduled Sunday appearance in Billings.

Trump fired Flynn in February 2017. White House officials said he misled them about his Russian contacts. The former general is one of 19 people charged in the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI.

Downing is one of four candidates seeking the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester.

In Saturday’s video, Flynn said Downing’s experience as a combat veteran made him the best candidate.

Keep in mind, this wouldn’t work if ‘racist’ wasn’t worn like a badge of honor among conservative circles. It wouldn’t work if they didn’t treat ‘racism’ like simply ‘telling it like it is’ and turned accusations of racism into somehow something worse than actually being racist.

re: #453 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I just picked one off my son’s leg, about the size of one in the photo

Gahh. Those tiny deer ticks are the dangerous ones!

Who knew that the ascent of Rudy back on the national stage would presage the end of muffins?

Ticks can be the size of a poppy seed. Can you spot all 5 ticks in this photo? Learn how to prevent tick bites.

i’ve not read ahead so, if it’s not already been said….can i guess the poppy seeds that are moving?

re: #455 HappyWarrior

I think he’s being tongue in cheek. But yes.

No, I don’t think so. He’s saying that it’s a plus for Blankenship if we call him a racist - which he clearly is - rather than criminally negligent in the deaths of 29 coal miners, which he also definitely is. Being CALLED racist makes West Virginia white folks rally round you, because they’re ‘tired of being called racist.’
