They did the same fucking thing about Michael Brown. And Tamir Rice. And Trayvon Martin. And every other person of color murdered by individuals or cops, no matter the situation (just walking, jogging, playing, etc.)

Living while black means ceding your rights when a white guy thinks you’re a threat.

Which is the entire point of the “he was no angel” bit: Painting things in a purely binary fashion (“criminal” v. “law-abiding citizen(s)”) in order to maintain “moral superiority” by declaring that if you side with the “criminal,” then you’re wanting to jail a “law-abiding citizen.”

It’s why I said the other day it would be a “letter v. spirit of the law” trial, as the prosecution will be arguing that nothing in the letter of the law allowed the McMichael’s to make a “citizen’s arrest” and thus Arbery was simply defending himself against a couple of armed yahoos, while the defense is gonna insist that Arbery’s past acts make any of his actions suspect and so the McMichael’s were just looking out for their neighbors in trying to stop him until the cops arrived.

The former will dismiss the video as unimportant as the McMichaels knew nothing about it, while the latter will hinge their entire defense on the idea that Arbery was “trespassing” and ran when he got caught or was “scoping the place out” with the intent to come back later to rob the place.

I do not remember who said it, but the saying was something to the effect that these fucking rich assholes will not stop destroying the earth until the only thing they literally have left to eat is their actual money. A nice big bowl of cash with a nice vinaigrette. John Muir warned us about these fucks more than a century ago. They won’t stop until they are stopped. That is the only thing that will work.

I’ve been watching a lot of Star Wars lately, and it reminded me of something I used to think about when I was younger… if you were to live in the Star Wars universe, would you want to live on a planet like Courasant - which is basically one giant city? Or would you rather live on one of the other planets that is more earth-like? My opinion on that always changes - like I sort of love the idea of a giant city planet, but then you get into the different levels of the planet (in canon I believe the planet has been built out so much that the only “natural” formation left is the very peak of the planet’s highest mountain), and how different life is for those at the top…

Integrity is what you do when no one is watching. Since the birth of corporations, those who run them and those who enable them have proven to infinity how they will not do the right things unless forced to. This is a huge reason we’re supposed to have a functional federal level government, to protect us from this shit. Now everyone is so bought and paid for that there are no effective laws with consequences, real consequences, for those stuffing their pockets with money gained from destroying whatever they want to.

I’d probably live in Nar Shadda. If Coruscant is described as a planet-wide city, Nar Shadda is a planet-wide apartment complex! Tales of Jabba’s Palace has a story with Greedo’s family set on Nar Shadda.

Anyone else here regularly skim twitter but are not a member? It is SO FUCKING SHITTY NOW. I don’t know how, but no matter whose feed I click I get bound up into an MSNBC/Slate loop. I like Joy Reid, but I don’t want to read her twitter. She shows up about half the time, sometimes both of her feeds are suggested. If I plug in someone I like who has nothing to do with those groups it still comes back. Or if I put in someone like Adam Serwer or Jamil Smith, suddenly it’s “black twitter” only. Something is seriously wrong now. Enforced bubblement. If I signed up would it get better? Is this a way of making me go crazy so that I sign up? It used to be much more open.

I don’t know. Having gone through incredible struggles to get employment in academia, I am sure that a lot was lost. It was probably a last outpost of rationality considering they had to suck it up to work at such an anti-intellectual institution.

I work at a non-tenure institution as well. I’m already trying to calculate how many part-time jobs I’ll have to take until I get the “entitlements” that the GOP is even now planning to strip from me. Ok, that was a bit dramatic, as my employer isn’t going to target us as LU did their Philosophy Dept. But if the economy goes a lot darker, who knows.

I don’t normally pay any attention to the recommendations that Twitter offers. I might look at one occasionally, such as when a recommended person comes up from someone at LGF who is there.

I am interested in looking at the Twitter feeds of certain politicians and occasionally opposition politicians (such as my state governor and senator, US House rep and both US Senators). I also tend to look at veteran groups, or certain veterans like @Stonekettle or @VFW_Vet .

Sometimes funny or interesting hashtags.

Might be worth it! I find it a lot easier to follow Twitter when I can set up multiple columns of content and fill them with what I want to see — people I follow, lists I create, or search results. It really works better for me.

For example, my TweetDeck window is now showing Notifications (when people reply, retweet, etc) in one column, my own tweets next to that, my direct messages next to that, my “A List” of people I follow for news and such, and fucking Donald Trump’s tweets in the last column because somebody has to keep an eye on that goon.

No, it used to be better and more free with more suggestions of people to follow.

I’ll take your word for it, since I never paid attention to the recommendations (same with YouTube).

YouTube’s recommendations have always been crap. A number of videos have been made there showing how their algorithm of suggestions can lead a person seeking conservative content gradually more and more into fascistic content (the latter is aimed at gaining new converts to fascism). With such exposure, fascists and racists are making counter-videos to debunk the idea that they manipulate the YouTube algorithm (all YouTube content creators do; it’s why if you punch “atheist” into their search bar you get a whole bunch of Christian and Muslim videos aimed at converting atheists or condemning them to hell).

I try to stay away from Internet companies offering things they think I would like to see or read. I’ll stick to recommendations from friends (that includes on-line friends) or outlets I trust.

Correct. Propaganda, conspiracy theory, apologetics, or just plain lies do not go away by ignoring them.

Military and civilian intelligence do not ignore what an enemy is saying or doing: They analyse every scrap of communications so they can determine if they are true or false or somewhere in between.

Trump can’t be ignored. He’s the President (like it or not). When he speaks, tens of millions hang on his words; it’s imperative to listen to them (as distasteful as that is) to see if he is lying or telling the truth or something in between.

The same goes for the minor leagues of wingnut (and moonbat) blogs or ‘zines. Information which is simply ignored without addressing counterfactual statements will spread unchecked.

Sometimes mocking works fine though for a PRATT or anyone who quotes whale.to or writes something objectively insane.

My favourite response to “9/11 was an inside job!” and “jet fuel can’t melt steel beams” is snark. I once wrote a five-page takedown of the jet fuel claim on a Yahoo group which included research for everything from the design of the buildings and aircraft to looking up the burn temperatures of commercial jet fuel from petroleum companies. That didn’t do anything to dissuade the conspiracy theorist.

Now I just ask, “well how do you know? Do you really know what’s in the chemtrail tanks that commercial aircraft carry? No one knows what temperature that stuff burns at.”

Lawyer shuts down Fox News’ #Obamagate talking points in 60 seconds, leaving host speechless

Lawyer Bradley Moss was brought on to discuss the legal ramifications of a possible Obamagate. Asking what Mr. Moss thought of all the “transcripts, the notes we found the week before. Texts all kinds of things that now are raising a lot of questions from people about the Flynn prosecution and the Russia investigation.” Arming himself with every Trump law team argument over the past three years, Moss launched into a 60 second shutdown of every stupid conservative talking point on Obamagate.

BRADLEY MOSS: Yeah, I’m sitting here trying to figure out what exactly constitutional deprivation was there? What is the crime that people think, you know, Barack Obama and Joe Biden are going to be prosecuted under? To be clear—and this is using the words of President Trump and his lawyers for the last three years—any sitting president can get any classified information they want. The Nebraska Panhandle reports in with the 5:30 PM MDT report.

pphd.org

Confirmed cases: 76 (+1, age group 10-19, +1 Scott’s Bluff County)
Recovered: 47
Deaths: 0
Largest age group: 10-19

The overwhelming majority of cases are by close contact of family members or work places. Fifteen were either travel-related or community spread.

If such numbers are similar in other areas, the covidiot protestors are going to be spreading like wildfire amongst their own families.

Our tax dollars at work: Since the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds did not come to Nebraska to waste money on pointless jingoism support healthcare workers, Governor Ricketts comes to the rescue.

A KC-135R Stratotanker from the 155th Air Refueling Wing in Lincoln will fly over 15 hospitals from Scottsbluff to Omaha on Wednesday.

The flyover will begin at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff at 11:32 a.m. MDT.

starherald.com

Hey, hospital and clinic workers are short on staff and supplies, but here’s an air refueling tanker for you.

They’ll be flying near or over my house on the leg between Scottsbluff and North Platte. I won’t be arsed to look.

Meanwhile, in the statewide update from 5:00 PM CDT:
nebraska.maps.arcgis.com

Total cases: 8,692 (+120)
Deaths: 103 (+3)

The three counties with the most cases are in order Douglas (Omaha), Dakota (South Sioux City), and Hall (Grand Island).

The deaths in those counties are different. Hall has the most (primarily meat packing plant spread) with 35, Douglas is second (airport, largest city) with 23, and Dakota is third (primarily meat packing plant spread) with 8.

Across the line from me in Wyoming, the state Department of Health notes new cases are “concerning” via the so-called dashboard button.
health.wyo.gov

Total cases: 675 (+1)
A massive surge in new tests today: 2,994 (yesterday: 1)
Hospitalised 67: (+1)
Deaths: 7 (no change)

I was just on a group call with some co-workers; everyone is noticing their productivity has gone way up during the self-enforced at home time because of the absence of a commute and lack of random interruptions while working. We might never go back to the office.

Son’s USAF contract IT lab scattered because the host city was hit hard. WAH has worked so well they were given a stand-down day for delivering early.

It would make sense that deaths from Friday through Sunday night might not have a final report until Tuesday; it wouldn’t be surprising if there is typically a day lag on cause of death.

There is a repeating sawtooth pattern. Sat-Mon tend to go soft, Tuesday catches up. (US as a whole)

Ohio man arrested for plot to kidnap police and stockpile their weapons for an ‘uprising’

On Tuesday, the FBI announced the arrest of Christian Stanley Ferguson, a 20-year-old man in Cleveland, Ohio, on charges that he concocted an elaborate plan to kidnap law enforcement officers, stockpile their weapons, and build up an arsenal to “start an uprising.”

“According to a criminal complaint filed today, Ferguson was identified after engaging in several violent and extremist postings made on the cross-platform communication application Discord,” said the FBI press release. “Over several weeks, Ferguson discussed his desire to call police to report a false crime was in progress to prompt a response by law enforcement. Specifically, he expressed an interest in a response by federal law enforcement because he believed they had better quality firearms and body armor to steal. He made statements about tactical options for killing multiple targets and the disposal of their bodies. He reaffirmed his plan to ambush law enforcement, kill them, rob them of their weapons, and start an uprising.”

No, he’s responding to the Trumpian visit with World War Two veterans. His claim is “masks are enforced cowardice” and they weren’t cowards.

There was no pandemic in WW2. There was one in WW1 though, so lots of WW1 pictures of troop formations are going up, showing them in facemasks to combat the flu pandemic at the time.

First Things is allegedly run by Roman Catholics to be “ecumenical” with other faiths, but is hard-line conservative politically.

There are a number of Christians in that thread saying the same thing about First Things that former New York Times subscribers say about that paper’s nuclear takes: I’m glad I unsubscribed or I’m doing so now, including from a couple priests.

The overwhelming majority of the dragging is coming from Christians.

Mom’s potato salad was a whole day thing. She’d first take a whole bunch of celery, trim the leaves, crack the stems and slice them thin. Then Mom would julienne a couple carrots. Next would be a half dozen eggs boiled. Mom shelled the eggs and then sliced them real thin. Mom would next boil 2 pounds of sliced potatoes, drain then put them in a big salad bowl adding the eggs, carrots and celery.

Mom would use dry Coleman’s mustard and whip up mayonnaise from scratch then pour the dressing on the veggies.

Mom wasn’t finished. She next thin sliced green olives with pimentos and then chop green onions on top of the salad. Finish touch—dusted with real Hungarian paprika and poppy seeds.

If I only had a picture of Mom’s masterpiece…

I don’t remember the details, but my parents got a vertical freezer from some friends with the idea that they would by big cuts of meat for cheap during the financial issues of the mid to late 70s. Anyway, that didn’t happen, but every year we had a family reunion on my great-aunt’s farm with about 120 in attendance. My mom would prepare something like 10-12 lasagnas and put them in the freezer before we went. These were heated for the Sunday after-church last picnic meal. I found this to be a good article in The Paris Review (a magazine of fiction, poetry, and essays).

Fuck the Bread. The Bread Is Over. (Sarah Orah Mark, who writes a column on fairy tales and motherhood)

She applied for a university job in February. The interview process took three days, being introduced to people she’d never meet again and facilities she’d never use, because right at that time the epidemic swept across the country, and the job offer was withdrawn.

What does it mean to be worth something? Or worth enough? Or worthless? What does it mean to earn a living? What does it mean to be hired? What does it mean to be let go?
