Kellyanne Conway in 2012 on rape:
Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway acknowledged the comments don’t help Republicans with women, but she argues it will be difficult for Democrats to harness electoral victories off of them.
“These unfortunate, untoward completely baseless comments are unhelpful in an environment where the left still seems to be obsessed with a war on women,” Conaway [sic] said, who was quick to point out that the 2012 election was really about abortion politics. “Rape is four a letter word, so is debt to many women.”

Guilt is a powerful motivator to keep people in line, and Christians have been doing it for a couple thousand years. You’ll sell out your ethics, your principles, anyone or anything to prevent your guilt from being exposed; that’s why Christianity is such a good motivator for conservative politics.

If Trump had been the least damn bit serious about building The Wall, one of the first things he would have done in office would have been to put together a planning commission to prepare engineering and design studies, to commission environmental and legal impact reports and present a schedule and proposed budget.

Not surprising: it seems like an awful lot of the electorate have already made their minds up by this point. It’s likely Trump isn’t going to be getting much of a “convention bounce” either - not in any REAL polls, anyway: though I’m sure that the campaign will be quick to loudly trumpet some outlier claiming Trump will get re-elected in a 1932/1964/1984-level landslide….
re: #50 Jay C
Trump’s chances of winning the popular vote are next to zero, but he is still working on ways to tweak the electoral system to eke out a win or barring that to make the entire election turns out to be such an unprecedented clusterfuck that he can claim that the results are not valid and that he actually won.

I dont think we’ve speculated enough on how much Trump extracted from Falwell over this:
We know that Cohen struck up a relationship with Falwell as far back as 2011/2012. We know that he got involved in helping keep the couple’s secrets, including hushing up compromising photos of Becki. It was as late as 2015 when Cohen helped the Falwells deal with the photos - photos which were apparently connected to another fit young man close to the couple.
I’m sure Falwell was ok with some of Trump, but how far did he have to go to keep this under wraps.

Yeah, I’ll second #79 : What’s Mitch gonna do? Threaten to block Trump’s legislative agenda? Not consider another gang of hack appointees? By this point (and Labor Day is, what? IIRC in that context the threat was that McConnell would hold endangered Republicans harmless for decoupling from Trump and his re-election.
NSFW Things:
1. Falwell Jr is only engaged in cuckholding if his fetish is feeling humiliated by his wife having sex with another man. If his fantasy is, say…having power to groom a younger man to have sex with his wife and be in control of the situation, he’s doing a different kink. This shit is nuanced and…frankly…I don’t read the guy as getting off on self humiliation.
2. Falwell Jr being accused of telling his employees and colleagues about his sexual prowess, his wife’s bedroom behavior, and his dick is, well, context that suggests that this isn’t a person who’s looking to set up a comfortable poly arrangement or something in which there’s a healthy, planned out power dynamic. Abuse of power dynamic sort of seems to be his thing. That Granda’s story includes feeling of being groomed and mentions being coached by Falwell Jr on how to behave in his relationship with Becki Falwell shouldn’t be surprising.
3. The clandestine business arrangement with Granda puts this situation in a place that is neither a healthy polycule nor sex work.
4. That Falwell Jr is part of cultural movement that specifically shuts down open discussion and expression of sexual desire and want is absolutely a contextualizing element beyond the simple label “hypocrisy.” What we see over and over is that purity culture goes hand in hand with predation. The former creates a situation in which there are authority figures that are permitted to sexualize their charges under the putative excuse of “knowing what they’re up to,” but also teach those down-power that their sexuality should be controlled by those up-power. That a powerful figure who operates a bastion of purity culture (that specifically encodes the idea that student’s bodies are not their own) initiates a relationship with younger, down-power person and “teaches’ them to engage in specific form of sexual act for the gratification of those up-power is not diametrically opposed to what these people believe, but a direct expression of it.

He can’t legally follow through with the threat to recruit “sheriffs” and “law enforcement,” but Republicans are doing some of the legwork for him.
…
Speaking to Sean Hannity on Thursday evening, the president vowed to enlist law enforcement to monitor polling stations, apparently to root out the rampant fraud he insists will occur this fall. “We’re going to have sheriffs, and we’re going to have law enforcement, and we’re going to have, hopefully, U.S. attorneys,” he said. “And we’re going to have everybody and attorney generals [sic].” As CNN pointed out, Trump doesn’t actually have the authority to mandate this, though election law expert Rick Hasen told the outlet that he could potentially hire off-duty law enforcement as poll watchers—something that would almost certainly trigger pushback from Democrats. “Trump tells Hannity that he will send law enforcement to the polls,” Democratic attorney Marc Elias said Thursday night. “Not without a legal fight he won’t!”

I realize I hammer on this a great deal, but the only thing conservatives really stand for is the idea that they’re protected by the rules but not bound by them…no matter how elaborate the restrictions they create are, they are always excepted…and this extends to absolutely every moral precept they present as inflexible.
And that goes doubly for anything they say about fucking.

Almost every appointment made by Trump has been someone who could dismantle their assigned portfolio. Knowledge of the portfolio has never been a criterion. Dislike of it has.
David Cay Johnston put out a book about it in 2018:
“…The Trump administration deposited political termites throughout the structure of our government. Their task, in the words of Trump’s first White House strategic adviser, Steve Bannon, is the “deconstruction of the administrative state.” By that, Bannon has explained, he means to undo the tax, trade, regulatory, and other means by which the federal government carries out its duties. The endgame is not just a smaller government, which Republicans always say they want, but a weak government, a government that looks first after the best-off in the land, not those most in need of a helping hand in the form of a sound education, clean water, and the other basics of a healthy society in the twenty-first century. These termites operate out of sight, in some cases in extraordinary secrecy, to bully or scare scientists into leaving, remove from public access important public records, and for all anyone knows destroy many of them. Such records are often necessary to enforce environmental, worker safety, and other laws.”

Yeah, I’ll second #79 : What’s Mitch gonna do? Threaten to block Trump’s legislative agenda? Not consider another gang of hack appointees? By this point (and Labor Day is, what? Two weeks away?) the numbers look pretty baked-in: I think the best/worst Mitch can do is figuratively cut loose from Trump - if that’s even possible - and try to salvage as many House/Senate seats as the GOP can: to try to maximize their leverage in a Biden Administration. Maybe.

re: #102 Jay C
At this point, I think it’s WAY past any “decoupling”: the Republican Party has turned itself into a personality cult, and they’re going to have to stick with that [sick, disgusting] personality in any eventuality.
I also think they should be thanking their lucky stars that the political system of reliable “red” and “blue” states is still firmly in place, else (IMO) they’d be looking at a Senate blowout as well - and a “60-vote” slam in ‘22 as well. Unfortunately, that’s (again IMO) unlikely.
2022 has Florida, North Carolina (open seat), Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin as Republican held seats up for re-election that should be targets. Indiana is as well, and Mayor Pete might consider a run. There aren’t any Democratic seats (except possibly Arizona after the special election this year) that are seats that will be tough for Dems to defend.
And I think this presidential election is more likely to be a blow out (Biden +10 nationally) than any other outcome.
So it’s entirely possible they get slammed.

re: #179 Hecuba’s daughter
Coronavirus front: It’s often been mentioned here that we are the worst in the world regarding certain key metrics. However, given we are the third most populous nation, it would not be surprising if we had more cases and more deaths than most other nations. The important numbers are cases per million (a very unreliable number because most cases are so mild they are never reported) and deaths per million. And when it comes to deaths per million among advanced industrial nations, the UK, Spain, Italy, Belgium, and Sweden still have higher rates than us. It wouldn’t be surprising if we eventually surpass them because of the sheer negligence of our leadership, but not yet.
Firstly, I think you are too quick to dismiss the cases/capita rate where the US is notably worse than the other industrialised (non asian) countries:
But, even if we stick to your preferred metric, deaths/capita please don’t just look at the numbers, look at the trend:
Within a week the US will exceed the death rate of Sweden, soon after that Italy, the UK in another week or so. Belgium will take a while, but under Trump’s leadership I’m sure you can do it.
Edit: fix 2nd graph to be deaths.

Realy? What gun company?
Bryco Arms.
But their new profile ignores a significant chapter in their professional histories: The couple, who for decades ran a personal injury law practice in Missouri, litigated numerous cases against prominent gun manufacturers and contributed to the downfall of what was once America’s largest handgun maker. In fact, the handgun Patricia McCloskey brandished on June 28 appears to have been an exhibit used in one of those cases.
In several cases in state and federal courts, Mark McCloskey represented plaintiffs who had been injured by handguns manufactured by Bryco Arms, a gunmaker that became notorious in the late 1990s and early 2000s for producing low-quality pistols derided as “junk guns” by gun-rights and gun-control activists alike. Bryco’s products had a reputation for being used in crimes — and having design defects that lead to unintentional discharges.
One case, Chronister v. Bryco, ended in a judgment of more than $350,000 in 2001 after Mark McCloskey successfully argued that the company was liable for a defective design that caused one of its handguns to misfire in a man’s hand with the chamber open. The explosion left the plaintiff in the case with shrapnel in his face, hearing loss, tinnitus and temporary blindness.
The McCloskeys’ website says they handled at least two other product liability cases against gun manufacturers, including one that resulted in a judgment of more than $400,000 and another misfiring-gun death case, which resulted in a confidential settlement.
In 2003, Bryco Arms declared bankruptcy and was sold for $510,000 after another lawsuit, not handled by McCloskey, forced the company to pay $24 million in damages, as The Trace has reported. After the bankruptcy, the company was revived as Jimenez Arms.

Well, they already pretty much own Drumpf.
Phoenix is failing its homeless people (which is pretty much the same with every city, but particularly bad in a pandemic):
COVID-19 is ‘a crisis within a crisis’ for homeless people (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)
PHOENIX (AP) — Nearly 200 tents stand inches apart on the scorching gravel lots, many covered in blankets for an extra layer of relief from the desert sun. Outside, their occupants sit on hot ground or in folding chairs, nearby palm trees providing no shade. Despite 12-foot-square sections painted in the gravel, there is little social distancing for Phoenix’s homeless population.
Created by local officials in late April as a temporary solution for some of the estimated 3,700 unsheltered homeless, the fenced-in lots on the edge of downtown promised round-the-clock security, social distancing and access to water and toilets. But residents complain that hygiene supplies have become scarce, and measures meant to contain the spread of COVID-19 are not enforced.
“We have been, like, ignored,” said 61-year-old Elisheyah. “There’s no safety, nothing to guarantee you can be safe out here.”

Ah. I was confused because Jimenez (the buyers of the Bryco property) were put out of biz (chapter 7) by a KC Mo suit over their gun trafficking early this year. No loss. Zinc guns more dangerous to the shooter than the target … (Perhaps not literally but close).
It was pointed out by the McCloskey’s former lawyer that the handgun the woman was holding was the Bryco gun they demonstrated in their lawsuit against the company. As such, the gun would have been made unable to fire. (For the purposes of brandishing, that doesn’t matter though.)
re: #234 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
I flipped over to MSNBC (for 10 seconds) to hear Charlie Kirk say that trump was the guardian of Western Civilization.
Click.
And 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
“What do you think about Western Civilization?”
“I think it would be a good idea!” - (maybe Ghandi)

Also, Glenn should have spared a couple of seconds to Wiki Willie Brown: he was a longtime power in CA politics, but never Governor.

Hey! It’s a different cultural milieu! There’s a big difference between two consenting older adults and a chickenhawk and his prey.
That is so *not* PC! I feel triggered.
re: #233 Blind Frog Belly White
They’re in discussions with him? Shouldn’t it be limited to, “Clean out your desk”?
Depends on how much of the Liberty U franchise—IP, physical property, investments—are entangled with Falwell’s personal finances.
re: #111 lawhawk
The kids already are asking that question thanks to Hamilton (the Reynolds Affair):
That was my wife that you decided to—”
“FUUUUUUUU—-“
“Uh oh, you made the wrong sucker a cUCKold”
“And he walked down to his parents’ room, and he said, ‘Father?’ ‘Yes son?’ ‘I want to kill you.’ ‘Mother?’ ‘Yes son?’ ‘I….want….to……..WAAAAAAAATCH you.’” Jerry Falwell does Jim Morrison, available only on 980 gram vinyl.
