Colbert: Russia’s War Machine Slowed by Cheap Gear and Expired Rations

Politics • Views: 22,867

YouTube

Putin’s army is failing in part because Russia’s oligarchs embezzled huge sums of money instead of upgrading gear and stocking fresh food rations. Over in Ukraine, members of the country’s prestigious ballet companies have put their careers on pause to return home and join the fight against Russia’s invaders. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

I recall reading about one of the Stalinist show trials in which the appointed defense attorney got up and said to the court that due to the heinous nature of the crimes his client had committed against the Soviet State, there was no possible defense he could offer…

So Ken Paxton’s line is that parents are doing permanent damage to trans kids by allowing them to be treated. I got news for ya, Kenny boy: A lot more permanent damage is done if you don’t treat them with gender-affirming care. It’s called SUICIDE.

An opinion that they’re treating as indisputable fact. That’s what’s driving me crazy: He issued a NON-BINDING declaration, but it was still just enough pretext for his buddy Governor Abbott (and obviously, these two cooked up this scheme together) to issue that stupid directive to CPS. Paxton also appeared on conservative radio host Rick Roberts’ show that same week, and spoke about his own experience as a father of four.

“They need to have an opportunity to grow up and have some life experience and figure out what they want, not have a parent make the decision that is permanently affecting that kid maybe well beyond the parent’s lifetime,” he said. “It’s not right, and it really is child abuse.”

Latest from Bob Lefsetz:

The newspapers are positively wild today.

One interesting story is Peloton’s decision to go to a subscription model for both the classes AND the bikes. With the ability to cancel at anytime. Therefore the hurdle to adoption is lowered significantly. Felice was interested in a Peloton treadmill, but the cost was prohibitive. (Never mind that you can’t watch TV on the screen if you choose not go to to a class. Give people options, they don’t want to be locked in.) But I haven’t read that the treadmill has gone on subscription too. But this speaks to music subscriptions. They represent 83% of US revenues, up from 82.8% the year before. But all the news has been about the increase in CD and vinyl sales. But streaming subscriptions represent $9.5bn in revenue, whereas physical only represent $1.6bn. Revenues increased across the board, and the physical piece of the pie actually shrunk. But don’t let a good headline get in the way of the facts, which you can read here: bit.ly As for the oldsters complaining they like to own something, they are further and further behind in the rearview mirror. Today’s generations don’t want to own anything, they want it all on demand, with improvements in delivery along the way.

And then there’s Margaret Sullivan’s article about fake fact checks in the “Washington Post.” Sullivan is the authority re the analysis of the news business, both the papers and the reporting. However, she is too invested in maintaining the established local newspapers. To speak like the street, their heads up their rear ends, if you’re not willing to think with a blank slate, you’re doomed. Which brings me to the article about Axios. Which is now going into the local news business. We need local news reporting, but the key is to come up with another way of delivering it.

Anyway, Sullivan’s article is not behind a paywall and you should read it, at least part of it:

“Russia’s new control tactic is the one Hannah Arendt warned us about 50 years ago - Fake fact-checks, designed to sow confusion, are Putin’s latest trick for undermining faith in media — and the truth”: wapo.st

Let me quote the beginning, which is the essence:

“You don’t need belief. All you need is confusion.

That’s how authoritarian leaders manage to control the populace, the great German political philosopher Hannah Arendt once explained.

‘If everybody always lies to you, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that nobody believes anything any longer,’ she said in an interview nearly five decades ago.

When that happens, people lose the capacity not only to act but even to think and judge. ‘And with such a people,’ she concluded grimly, ‘you can then do what you please.’”

This is a huge problem not only in Russia, but around the world, especially the United States. This is what the concept of alternative facts has delivered.

But it’s the next article that inspired me to write:

“Businesses Assail Texas Move to Classify Care for Trans Teens as ‘Child Abuse’ - A new ad signed by dozens of big companies warns, ‘Discrimination is bad for business.’”: nyti.ms

Now this is where the music business, the artists themselves, can have an effect.

Like I said last night, unfortunately it’s the corporations that are leading when it comes to societal issues. But this is a natural for artists. Who can’t hide under the umbrella of their labels. Artists are individuals, independent contractors, they don’t get benefits like health insurance, therefore they are singular, which is part of their appeal.

And music appeals to outcasts. That’s its true power. The ability to speak to the disenfranchised, those misunderstood and derided, oftentimes without friends. Those who don’t live in the metropolis, and feel alone. When an artist speaks their truth it gives them power, to be themselves and soldier on. Nothing has the power of music in this sphere, NOTHING!

Not to mention that so many musicians fall under the heading of LGBTQ. Some out, some not. But there is strength in numbers, and if all the musicians came out against the new anti-LGBTQ laws in Texas and Florida…

Remember when gay marriage was inconceivable? Even the legalization of marijuana? Right has traditionally triumphed in America, it’s just a matter of time. But now in so many ways our country is going backward. Catholic countries like Colombia are liberalizing abortion laws and in the U.S. we’re shrinking them. At some point you have to make a stand for rights or you’re in jeopardy of losing them.

I cannot see why a statement can’t be made by artists re these heinous new laws. And in truth, you start with headliners and then everybody else wants to come on board for fear of being left out. Elton John, Brandi Carlile. They commit, and you’ll be stunned who lines up behind them. And it’s got to be from every walk of music. Women and LGBTQ members have been stifled, made to be in the closet, in country music forever. Once you shine light on a subject, change can happen.

Even better, get the major labels and the big streaming outlets like Spotify to pay for ads featuring signees. Both in print and on TV, online too. Facebook, Instagram, etc. Hell, have Facebook donate the ad space. All these outlets have philanthropic programs, why can’t the people they make their money from utilize them and benefit the population at large.

Do you know any trans people? I do. One person who was tortured, was on the verge of suicide living as a man. Look past the canards like bathroom utilization, these are just diversions put up to take the focus off the aggrieved.

Everybody’s got a gay relative. If you don’t think so, that’s because they’re in the closet.

This is a no-brainer.

Furthermore, additional action can be taken. Acts can refuse to tour in Texas and Florida. Hell, the superstars don’t need to go there, they’ve got more demand than they can fulfill.

We’ve got to push back.

This is where artists can lead.

And they should. Right away. Time is of the essence.

And one thing is for sure, musicians can spread the word better than politicians. They make a statement and it’s EVERYWHERE! That’s one of music’s powers, it’s time to employ it.

the damage would be monumental. sure, european countries may in the short term go back to russian oil for a bit, but they’ve likely learned their lesson there. russia is not a trustable partner. and russia will be a basket case for the foreseeable future. they need another revolution, and this time they need to thoroughly clean house, and that means a lot of people going up against the wall so they don’t find their new government corrupted by ex-kgb and ex-communists finding their way back into the halls of power, reincarnated as wealthy oligarchs.

This is what they’re selling. Russia WON! They destroyed and demoralized the Ukrainian forces. They didn’t and they’re not. Not at all.

Russia cannot “denazify” Ukraine. It should be done by Ukrainians themselves.

This is a follow up on WE WON (above) by saying they are Nazis but Russia can’t make Ukraine not Nazis.

Russia should make Ukraine neutral but it cannot risk new Afghanistan. Stop the invasion.

And this is the way to get out of the clusterfuck they created. We won! We cannot help Ukraine help themselves. Nor should we. It’s time to go.

Deutsche Bank reverses after criticism, will withdraw from Russia

Deutsche Bank released a statement Friday saying they are “winding down” operations in Russia following criticism of their previous stance to stay in the country.

“Deutsche Bank has substantially reduced its Russian exposure since 2014. Like some international peers and in line with our legal and regulatory obligations, we are in the process of winding down our remaining business in Russia while we help our non-Russian multinational clients in reducing their operations. There won’t be any new business in Russia,” the bank said.

Lumen announced that it is ending business relations in Russia, making it the second top U.S.-based Internet carrier to make such a move following Friday’s announcement by Cogent Communications. U.S. technology and telecommunications companies have been cutting services in Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, while Russia’s government has throttled or blocked popular U.S.-based services such as Twitter and Facebook. With Cogent and Lumen leaving, the remaining top sources of international data in Russia are Western companies based in Sweden, Italy, and the U.K., according to an analysis by Internet monitoring firm Kentik. Said Kentik’s Doug Madory, “We’re in uncharted territory here.”

A report by the Brookings Institution found new technology jobs are showing up increasingly in smaller U.S. cities far from Silicon Valley. Brookings’ Mark Muro says the smaller the city reporting tech job growth, the more likely the connection to remote work. Jobs in nine cities considered rising tech stars initially shrank in the early days of the pandemic, but by the end of 2020, tech employment in those cities had climbed at least 3% on average. Muro says spiking numbers of tech roles posted in those cities suggests employees are drawn to regions with a lower cost of living compared with the East and West coasts, while companies are tapping labor markets in cities with greater worker diversity.

ihl-databases.icrc.org

More:
The question of whether arms may be mounted on medical transports must be distinguished from the question of whether they may be armoured.[32] The latter is generally permitted because it is a purely deflective means of defence.

s a general rule, however, only ‘light’ weapons may be mounted on military medical transports. While the nature of the anticipated threat will certainly influence the type of defensive armament used, mounting heavy weapons, sometimes referred to as ‘crew served’ (meaning they require a team of at least two people to operate them), is inconsistent with the protected status of such transports.[37] Whether every belt-fed machine gun falls into this category is uncertain, as some light, belt-fed machine guns are individually operated.

So this looks like a gray area.. if it is being used as an ambulance.

They have rigs to remotely fire the missile nowadays. IIUC they have video feed through the sight and can fire it from miles away. Cheap high tech :D Hopefully that was used in this case because I don’t see any movement out of the firing position.

Tucker Carlson is an American white supremacist first and foremost who feels an affinity for a “fellow white” country in Putin’s Russia. In his mind, Carlson’s fever dream of a white supremacist USA can best be achieved by a successful Putin effort in full-on Imperialist Russian Supremacism in Europe. Carlson and Putin are fellow travelers only, Putin is a full-on Russian Supremacist which is a much more specific sort of hate-based ideology other than the typical American brand of simplistic White Supremacism. Carlson is a stooge to Putin, nothing more, easily replaced and discarded once his deplorable actions have been exhausted and used up.

She’s been silent on the Texas anti-women bill. Based on her rants against CRT and mandates, she seems pro-white supremacy, anti-vaxx, and pro-tax cuts. My sister is friends with someone who has some family ties to her and she told my sister years ago that this woman is basically unhinged. The real issue, is that like in _several_ other cases, Russia is playing both sides, and both sides can’t get away from Russia’s assistance without the risk of Russia fully going to the other side.

Russia has major influence with the Assad government, which is also Iranian supported, and is amongst other things, hiring Syrian mercenaries to fight in Ukraine.

Russia also allows Israel to act against Iranian targets there.

Because the spirit that drives Trump and Putin has infected the Israeli RW, too.

It travels under a couple different names, depending on the net that imports it. There is/was a pan-European mysteries distributor that carries all kinds of those series from amazingly diverse countries—Iceland, etc. Can’t remember the distributor’s name, but it’s a man’s name the starts with “W”.

I couldn’t tell from the video but I was thinking that the tank that was hit was a command tank. With the Russian’s lack of competent leadership taking out their command structure is the smart thing to do.

I think I know what you’re talking about. Amazon I think at least used to carry that channel. I didn’t subscribe only because I wasn’t sure if that many subtitles would tend to wear after a bit, but I might, because I’ll bet there’s plenty of good European mystery stuff. I certainly enjoyed Wallander, and the last episode where the one officer actually cries when Wallander tells the group he has Alzheimer’s actually made my eyes moist, and I am not all that sentimental about television shows.

MHz Choice, by any chance, by the way?

When I had my first one (lo these many moons ago), I got a chuckle out of the doctor by actually asking him “when are we going to start?” - as he was putting the equipment away……

That was probably Netflix or Prime, in one of the sub-channels. The best of those mysteries was the Italian “Thou shall Not Kill”, with a Turinese detective that was so beautiful they had to constantly dress and makeup her down. (Former Miss Italy, and a very good actress.)

I can’t confirm the truth, but it’s been said that the Qing dynasty navy facing the Japanese in the first Sino-Japanese war found that many of their missiles were packed with wood shavings instead of explosives. The story was that the Dowager Empress Cixi diverted funds from military reform in order to restore the glory of Qianlong’s Summer Palace, which had been destroyed by mostly British troops after the second Opium War. The Japanese routed the Qing.

But it’s also true that several new modern ships of the Qing had previously been sunk by the French as China tried to protect Vietnam from French moves to colonize the area that would become French Indochina.

The two versions are not necessarily contradictions. Cixi’s supporters were all very conservative and against most of the modernization that China needed at the time. And at nearly the same time, the Regent of Korea, the Daewangun, was redirecting funds for modernization into rebuilding an important Yi dynasty palace to restore the prestige of the Yi family. Those two things, along with Russia’s overconfidence against Japan in 1904-1905 allowed Japan to take Korea and Russia’s train lines in Manchuria leading to Dalian/Port Arthur.

ETA: cardinal sin. I reduced complex factors to “those two things.” Apologies.

I think it’s pretty clear that we have tentacles into Russian Comms that the Russians had no idea we had.

We are releasing a level of Intel to the public and, more importantly, to Ukraine that is fucking the Russians right up the butt.

This has got the Russians as nervous as a cat in in a room full of rocking chairs.

We have a joint-use base in Turkey called Incirlik in a city called Adana. We have a squadron of KC-135’s there.

We also have a weapons storage area there. There are bombs there. There are cruise missiles there. There are rumors that there are nukes there. (I know for a fact that it was true in 1982, when I flew into Incirlik.)

A B-52H can carry 20 cruise missiles with a range of 1,100 kms (700 miles) and fly through Turkey into the Black Sea and release those twenty missiles to destroy the majority of Putin’s long-range bomber force in a city called Engels on the Volga river and never get anywhere near Russian Air Defense assets.

You should look it up on Google Maps! Just look at all those bombers lined up on the ramp!

If we attacked Russia with conventional weapons inside Russia, would he launch nukes in retaiation?

I don’t think so.

Since I updated to the latest mac os, I’ve joined the “can’t see youtube embeds” crowd — all I see when someone posts one is the “larger” button — which doesn’t work, but will show the url if press-held, and allow me to open the link in a new window.

Pending a fix to this, it would be nice if we all could add some sort of text to our embeds (like “Led Zeppelin song,” or “Ukrainian missiles destroying tanks”) so there’s some clue to what’s in the big blank space.

This military procurement and corruption problem isn’t going to get any easier for Putin with crushing sanctions only escalating. The NATO strategy of Ukraine wearing down and degrading the Russian military over time appears to be the evolving strategy with a clear victory not really possible. Putin’s ineptitude as a military commander also weakens his position inside Russia and security assets are already prioritizing interior purges instead of foreign threats.

China also would probably like these conditions to continue as well as it would weaken their Western border threat and they could ignore Russian calls for assistance as consistent with Xi’s propaganda of “non-interference”.
