They’ve made themselves the gatekeeper to the court

That was never supposed to be their role
It was only to filter out the truly and obviously unqualified

Russia’s military has entered a meat grinder thanks to Putin and the nonstop lies. They’ll keep adding to the butcher’s bill, because he’s not sending his own to die.

Russia’s military will take years to recover from this. Their conventional arms just don’t stack up, and their forces lack of training, methods, and logistics will be a lesson of what not to do for warfighters for generations to come.

And if Russia’s admitting these many are dead, you can be damned sure that the true death toll is much higher.

26,000 casualties in less than a month’s fighting is a staggering toll. Hard to see how Russia can win a grinding months long war of attrition if they keep taking casualties at that rate. This is why they have shelled Mariupol into rubble and demanded its surrender. Russia can’t afford the troop loss they will suffer if they have to fight to gain control of cites block by block.

re: #161 Backwoods_Sleuth

That reminds me how focused the set decorators were in Chernobyl to make sure the tiniest details were historically accurate.

How Chernobyl’s meticulous sets envelop viewers in late Soviet design

“Every time we shot a landscape or exterior, it couldn’t be a beautiful field,” says Hull. “There had to be a sign of man destroying nature, something that captured a sense of depletion.”

But the most important source of inspiration was the on-the-ground research conducted by the production team. The staff watched extensive video footage of the event, and scoured Lithuania and Ukraine for props and authentic period costumes, tapping into Ukrainian eBay and Saturday markets in the capital city of Kiev to find old ashtrays, plates, and polyester clothing. The wardrobe department scoured warehouses from Prague to Kiev to find forgotten stocks of Soviet clothing, even going so far as to make new articles of clothing from old fabric discovered in Belarus. In many of these countries, complicated feelings about the Soviet past—some felt resentful and wanted to forget the era, others held onto nostalgia—added to the challenge of souring.

Some of the biggest challenges came with recreating the scientific equipment of the era. Much of the dosimeters and radiological gear were simply custom-made for the shoot. These efforts helped avoid ’80s pastiche, and ironed out the kind of “Americanisms” that often creep into other Western shows about this era.

Ukrainian authoritieSuddenly at dawn, a dozen soldiers burst in: “Where are the journalists, for fuck’s sake?”

I looked at their armbands, blue for Ukraine, and tried to calculate the odds that they were Russians in disguise. I stepped forward to identify myself. “We’re here to get you out,” they said.

The walls of the surgery shook from artillery and machine gun fire outside, and it seemed safer to stay inside. But the Ukrainian soldiers were under orders to take us with them.

In not very interesting local news, the National Weather Service is changing our fire zone boundaries and renumbering them (meaning programmable weather radios will all have to be reprogrammed).

The old boundaries follow county lines. The new boundaries follow geographic features. The rationale for that is fires tend to stay withinin a particular geographic feature rather than a particular county.

Thus my old fire zone (the five SW counties of the Nebraska Panhandle) is proposed to be changed with a new fire zone which runs along the valley of the North Platte River, bounded on the south by the Wildcat Hills and on the north by the Nebraska Sandhills. I live on the boundary of the new zones 435 and 436 (on the foothills of the Sandhills).

Well, not quite a monopoly, but close. Until I was nineteen, we had a cooperative telephone company in my town in Michigan [1981]. Our telephone number was 12 (one long ring, two short rings).

Afterwards, General Telephone bought out our telephone company and we got rotary dial service. To make a long-distance call, an operator would come on the line to take down your telephone number for billing.

My aunt (who lived a mile outside of town) had a party line until she died in 2015.

In 1989 I happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Late afternoon, October 17 South San Francisco. After the quake, I looked out in my hotel parking lot for cars with car phone antennas. I knocked on 3 doors with cash in hand offering it to anyone that would call my wike in LA and let her know I was fine. 3 for 3 were fakes. Antenna only trying to make a rich impression.

The ’80s. Ya had to be there to get it.

Most movies I’ve seen suggest going after Arnie doesn’t end well.

He just might be more popular in Russia than Putin.

The fake car phone antennas, beepers, and the obnoxious car alarms. The 80’s were something else.

You’re right, Arnie didn’t.

But Danny Glover did.

Lime-size hail is hard core.

When life gives you lime-size hail, make gin and tonics.

IANAL, but can somebody here who is a lawyer or at least watches a bunch of lawyer shows on TV explain to me how “Hunter Biden’s Laptop” is admissible evidence in a court of law?

Depends on what you want to use it as evidence for, and if you can lay a foundation for its authenticity and relevancy.

But Danny Glover did.

Predator 2. He was given a pistol as a trophy.

Danny Glover’s character earned the old pistol. Predators live by a strict code that governs their hunting lifestyle, and part of the code says that if one of your clan is defeated in combat, the victor must be accepted as equals and be presented a trophy or gift.

re: #215 No Malarkey!

That is hilarious. For you kids too young to know, once upon a time, you couldn’t buy a phone; you had to lease it from AT&T, which had an absolute monopoly on phone service nationwide until it was broken up.

Those phones are among the most durable pieces of technology to ever exist, since there was actually profit to be made by having them last forever.

If you’re talking about the investigation into Hunter’s back taxes, and the recent breathless NYPost headline screaming that the NYTimes HAS CONFIRMED THE LAPTOP!!!11111!!, well…

…The authenticity of some emails between Hunter and his business partners has apparently been confirmed. Emails which were part of a file dump acquired by the NYTimes, and which the Post alleged came from the alleged laptop. Emails that show Hunter trying to surf the thin line of legality involved with setting up brief, no-promises meetings between Dad and foreign clients without registering as a foreign agent. And, more germane to the Justice Dept. investigation, discuss how to get out from under his mountain of back tax liability far enough not to get dinged for evasion.

The emails look like they’re probably admissable, since Hunter’s people confirm them. And reeeeeally weak sauce if what they’re supposed to prove is any kind of corruption narrative involving Joe Biden and Ukraine. In them, Hunter mostly seems intent on making sure his clients don’t get the wrong message and start thinking Hunter can influence Joe’s decision making, because he knows he can’t.

But the Famous Alleged Laptop is still, well, alleged.

re: #223 Ace Rothstein

My first one had to be worn on my shoulder like a purse.

And for the “ERMAGERD 5G IS FRYIN MY BRAIN CELL!” crowd, those ’80s analog mobile phones put out enough wattage in the ~500MHz range to make your scalp glow. The switch to spread-spectrum digital (thanks, Hedy Lamarr!) was such a huge advance in terms of cutting down on RF-to-the-head, and gets no respect. ;)

It doesn’t exist (and no the NYT Article never said it did) so it’s not. They’ve been fucking this chicken for over a year now and not once has even a picture of it been shown. Half the time they can’t decide if it one laptop or two, where it came from, or if it’s just a hard drive.

It doesn’t exist. All they have are emails from somewhere, that Hunter Biden said are real, that completely torpedo the whole narrative on it.
