Lyrics (to whole song, not this short edit):
I’m whistling with this empty hole, My reflection I don’t know
This ceiling I’m seeing it a lot, Before I get the sleep that I bought
Yeah changes, thats the part that hits, Top speed don’t feel shit
Just floating, walking through the walls, Don’t know where I’m going overall

I hear nothing calling out my name, that’s ok
Here I am fucking answering anyway

Dead inside but life’s still moving
Dead inside but I’m still doing

Atlantis, lost it in a day, they were all assholes anyway
Time moving, nothing stays the same, but I’ve been in this same shirt for so many days
Earth turning underneath my feet, just scraping, happening
This gets me out of bed, a little light yeah up ahead

I hear nothing calling out my name, that’s ok
Here I am fucking answering anyway

Dead inside but life’s still moving
Dead inside but I’m still doing

Before Elon Musk bought Twitter, slurs against Black Americans showed up on the social media service an average of 1,282 times a day. After the billionaire became Twitter’s owner, they jumped to 3,876 times a day,” the New York Times reports.

“Slurs against gay men appeared on Twitter 2,506 times a day on average before Mr. Musk took over. Afterward, their use rose to 3,964 times a day.”

“And antisemitic posts referring to Jews or Judaism soared more than 61 percent in the two weeks after Mr. Musk acquired the site.”

Nazi-on-Nazi hate. Lovely

Oh, they all hate each other. The system, whether engaged with cynically or idealistically, can only persist if there’s someone to look down on. Fascists can’t…not identify malefactors and punish them. It’s their whole understanding of how the world functions, where problems come from and thus what are feasible solutions.

Snap all these white people onto their own planet and they would immediately establish a new caste system.

How to Avoid Having Dinner with a Nazi

Benjaman Wittes: “I want to stress that this checklist will not protect you against all dinners with Nazis. Even the great Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, who saved tens of thousands of Jews in Budapest during the war, found himself having dinner with Adolph Eichmann one evening, after all.”

“But the checklist will save you from most common accidental Nazi dining experiences.”

re: #15 Dangerman

In the year 2022 and everything that means (multiple diasporas, intermarriage, a general global economy and ability to relocate) , what are “Jewish last names”

I think with these dudes—the whole modern alt-right blob thing—the point is that there’s no validation standard beyond their assertion. Truth is a property of the kind of person making the assertion.

Much like the like assholes talking about taqiyya a decade ago or…the entirety of transvestigations…the process is occult and works backwards from the assumption of correctness: what is not obviously Jewish (Muslim, trans) can simply be labelled crypto-Jewish (Muslim, trans) and thus proof, that which is obviously not Jewish (Muslim, trans) is artifice and thus proof.

You can see the same process in chiral form when they heap accolades on people like Trump: he hasn’t done the shit they say, he doesn’t behave how they describe, etc. but accuracy is just not the point.

Fritz Lang told an anecdote in which Goebbels told him personally “I decide who is Jewish”…and it applies generally to this kind of person. They don’t have an episteme, they don’t want to engage with what is materially real or what materially happened.

I think that’s why intensely vain individuals play along with fascism: it’s the ideology most preoccupied with imagery and symbols as sources of truth, to the exclusion of the real.

re: #24 TedStriker

I think Snowden’s made it clear that he’ll never set foot back in the US ever again willingly; did he renounce his US citizenship?

Almost certainly not, but if he’s renounced recently, it won’t be public for some time — probably a few months.

To renounce your US citizenship, you need to file an application while abroad, pay a couple of thousand dollars worth of renunciation fees, pay a tax liability to the IRS as if you had sold off all your American assets (even if you didn’t sell them). You don’t have to hold another citizenship to do so, so he could have applied, but then he would have been stateless once granted. Getting appointments reportedly takes a long time.

Your name then shows up in the Federal Register, which publishes names quarterly — at that point, it’s official, and you need to apply for visas to enter the US (or use the Visa waiver program if eligible), but if the government thinks you’re renouncing for tax reasons, you’re banned from entering the US.

Edit: Deleted reference to PDF from federal register which is displaying weirdly.

Most people who do so, do it because some countries banking institutions refuse service to American citizens living there because those banking institutions then need to deal with American bureaucracy, if they ever want to deal with US Dollars. So it’s cheaper for them to not deal with Americas. Others do it because they have careers (governmental or political) in foreign countries.

Many of these people are people with few ties to the US (One American parent, but spent their entire life in the other country, or born in the US to non-American parents but left at a very early age (e.g, Boris Johnson), and didn’t know they were Americans till late in life — not just the super rich who don’t want to pay taxes, or people running from the law. Or they just have more ties to their new country.

On Biden prioritizing South Carolina over Iowa in the Democratic primary process:

It makes sense. Iowa used to be a strongly progressive state (from its founding), but by 2000 the religious right (leveraging the Farm Bureau organization) turned Iowa into the Bible Belt, and now in 2022 the Democratic party in Iowa is way out of power.

Things do change in this country, even if slowly.

It is more likely that a Democrat that wins in SC can with nation-wide, than one who wins in Iowa, now. Wasn’t the case even as late as 2008 (Obama), but 2024 is 16 years after Obama and the transitioning of Iowa to the Bible Belt is now entrenched.

Same thing happened to Indiana.

Ohio is more populated and thus the situation there is more complicated.

Illinois would have easily followed Indiana and Iowa save for the existence of Chicago. Same with Minnesota, which is not deep atavist because of the Twin Cities area holding most of the population of that state.

New Hampshire and Nevada as joint 2nd states are a pretty good compromise. You have one very small state (which is relatively white, and a swing state), and one smaller than average state (which has higher than average percentages of Asians and Hispanics) which is also a swing state.

Edit: And boosting engagement and enthusiasm by Democrats in swing states is important.

That’s the thing about Nazis is that eventually, if they achieve their wildest dreams about cruelty and the elimination of all others on the planet, they will then turn on themselves at some point because- that’s who they are.

…Natural contrarians unhappy with anything other than destruction against … anything.

Herr Schicklegruber kept himself in power by making sure his underlings, and their underlings, were always involved in squabbles over power. It’s one of the main reasons Nazi Germany got defeated. They were often so busy fighting with each other to worry very much about the Allies.

Name a popular misconception about a movie you’ve been told to hate:
‘Song of the South’ is set in the Reconstruction, not pre-Civil War.
Which is not to defend the wincingly dated plot, just being accurate while dissing it.

One of the things I couldn’t save from my mom’s rained-on collection of old paper was the souvenir booklet she bought at the first showing of the movie. We had the record when I was a kid, and I have a bootleg DVD with Japanese subtitles, weird as that seems. (Must confess to enjoying the animated sequences while fast-forwarding through most of it.)

Same with Musk. No consequences for his actions. Even if Twitter does have a Fail Whale that it eventually won’t come back from, Tusk will still have his billions to make life miserable for even more people.

There’s a good case to be made the Twitter is now worthless. It was never worth $44 billion, and now, with $13 billion in debt, it may not be worth even that if Musk were to put it up for sale.

I wonder if Musk’s intention - having been forced to buy it at a level he can never recoup - is to generate a massive loss to write-off against taxes? He sold a bunch of Tesla stock earlier in the year - $20 billion. And he sold much more than that in 2021. That’s a big tax bill.

I mean it seems stupid, but ??? …I quit it weeks ago and don’t miss it.

I’m still a little sus on the provenance of the laptop itself, but any way you slice it, the fact is that even if it is real, it is now spoiled evidence, and in any event, doesn’t prove any crime traceable to the President himself.

This doesn’t make any sense. If I read it right, the French found him unfit for trial, saying he belongs in an institution, and deported him to Japan where he was deemed sane and released, as if they forgot about the reason for his arrest. He then made his life about his crime that he never felt at all bad about.

In 1983, he was deemed unfit for French medical experts and was initially held in a psychiatric institution before being deported to Japan in 1984.

Renee’s family pushed for Sagawa to be prosecuted so that the murderer would never go free” but upon arrival in Japan he was deemed sane by authorities.

They decided Sagawa’s only problem was a ‘character anomaly’ and that he did not require hospitalisation.

Sagawa made no secret of his crime and capitalised on his notoriety, including with a novel-like memoir titled ‘In the Fog’ in which he reminisced about the murder in vivid detail.

Mark Bunker is a longtime Scientology critic. He was elected to the Clearwater city council in 2020. Here he addresses the council and attendees about how the leader of Scientology, David Miscavige, is willing to meet with the council about Scientology’s intentions wrt downtown Clearwater…with the exception of him. Bunker proceeds to go after Miscavige and, among other things, asks how the leader of a multi-billion dollar operation which claims to “make the able more able” can’t meet with him in a room?

The background to this is that Scientology and its members have spent million$ of dollar$ buying up property in a particular area of town, to try and keep it from development. In November, voters approved a development plan that Scientology was opposed to. Apparently there’s going to have to be a property swap with Scientology eventually but I don’t know the background of that.

All of this and more is packed within 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Oh yeah, Scientology has been a curse upon Clearwater since they sneaked onshore as “United Churches” in 1978. Clearwater is what happens when you let one religion scare you into not doing anything.

I think this is a ham-handed, quickly done, and misguided effort by Musk to prove to the advertisers that Twitter is still a serious source of news and therefore will continue to attract the right sort of eyeballs and people who will add content.

As this goes on the parallels of Trump flailing from crisis to crisis and Musk seem to look more and more appropriate.

re: #187 KingKenrod

There’s a good case to be made the Twitter is now worthless. It was never worth $44 billion, and now, with $13 billion in debt, it may not be worth even that if Musk were to put it up for sale.

I wonder if Musk’s intention - having been forced to buy it at a level he can never recoup - is to generate a massive loss to write-off against taxes? He sold a bunch of Tesla stock earlier in the year - $20 billion. And he sold much more than that in 2021. That’s a big tax bill.

I mean it seems stupid, but ??? …I quit it weeks ago and don’t miss it.

It never makes financial sense to spend money to save taxes

What I’m getting here is that Musk wants to use Twitter to be a narrative funnel that suits his taste…he throws shit at his followers and they’re the distribution system that looks “authentic”…but he’s actually bad at it to the point he’s showing the magic trick.

Like, he’s going for “look what I found behind your ear” level misdirection and somehow his dick got involved in the bit.

This is painfully dumb to the point I’m not even offended by the cynicism or monstrous politics. It’s bad craft.

Bottom line: war is not going to disappear so yes we need a military.

Ok, from the NG website for the B-21, here is part of their sales job for why the craft is going to be called the “Raider”:

According to the Air Force, “the Doolittle Raiders are known for their surprise attack against Japan during World War II on April 18, 1942, which forced the Japanese to recall combat forces for home defense and boosted morale among Americans and U.S. allies abroad.

That little blurb demonstrates so well how reality, and the truth about reality, gets massaged to sales thing.

Here’s the Wikipedia entry for the Doolittle raid:

On the ground the raid killed about 50 people and injured 400. Damage to Japanese military and industrial targets was slight, but the raid had major psychological effects. In the United States, it raised morale. In Japan, it raised fear and doubt about the ability of military leaders to defend the home islands, but the bombing and strafing of civilians steeled Japanese resolve to gain retribution - this was exploited for propaganda purposes.[4] The raid also pushed forward Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto’s plans to attack Midway Island in the Central Pacific - an attack that turned into a decisive defeat of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) by the US Navy in the Battle of Midway. The consequences of the Doolittle Raid were most severely felt in China: in reprisal for the raid, the Japanese launched the Zhejiang-Jiangxi campaign, killing 250,000 civilians and 70,000 soldiers.

The Doolittle Raid was much like Iraq War II - revenge. In the case of Doolittle it was revenge for Pearl Harbor. In Iraq II it was just general anger at Arabs for 9/11.

The ultimate effect of the Doolittle Raid was just more killing of civilians.

And I propose that is all the B-21 can ever be. A war machine for more war.

For those who don’t know what Tiger Tail Ice cream is…

Canadians love their tiger tail ice cream. Oddly enough, this retro favorite is almost impossible to find outside of the Great White North. Tiger tail doesn’t call for rare ingredients foraged from the Canadian Rockies, nor is it intellectual property of the government. It just doesn’t seem to appeal to anyone except Canadians.

A ribbon of black licorice swirled into an orange-flavored ice cream base gives this tiger its stripes. The old-school flavor sold well in soda parlors from the 1950s to the 1970s, and many Canadians now consider it a childhood classic. As curious as it may seem, kids (and nostalgic adults) are among the biggest fans of the citrus and black licorice combination.

A few years ago I was at Williams-Sonoma and the Assumption Abbey fruit cake was half price. My dad always said he liked fruit cake so I bought it. He loved every crumb of it.

In the year 2022 and everything that means (multiple diasporas, intermarriage, a general global economy and ability to relocate) , what are “Jewish last names”

Steinberg, Goldschmidt, Iceberg…

Look what you did to the Titanic!!

I went skiing today at the ski area I used to work at. The skiing is as good as it gets for 2 December, lots of powder and untracked snow.

The Mountain Ops manager put me on the invite-only list for volunteer work for a season pass. I did 40 hours of brush cutting on the steepest runs on the mountain this fall. I took this photo with my iPhone XR on my last day of work on 10 October. Taken at Sunlight Mountain Resort near Glenwood Springs, CO. Like-you-read-about Colorado fall colors.

Did some ill-advised tree skiing today. We were on our way to a “shack,” a wooden shelter in the woods where ski/snowboard bums smoke cannabis. When the snow’s deep enough I can just blast through here at a good clip. Today it was *survival skiing* mode through here, needs at least another couple of feet of snow to make it safe.

These folks single-handedly cured me of my life long aversion to fruitcake.

A bit pricey but it’s not like it’s a staple food item.

Well you are a day late from my post last night touting the World’s Best Fruitcakes from the bakery in Corsicana (since 1896!!), but you are in the club, and deserve respect for embracing the fact that those Cakes RULE.

When I was a kid I remember the A&P would stock Jane Parker fruit cakes between Thanksgiving & Christmas. Frankly I couldn’t handle them but there was one A&P cake that Mom and I really loved and it was the “Spanish Bar” cake which was loaded with spices and the plumpest raisins in the world. It was smothered in a cream cheese icing.

re: #273 Charles Johnson

Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if all this drama with Kanye West was staged ahead of time with all of the shitheads involved. Kayfabe, if you will.

I doubt it?

Partially because I don’t think Kanye is capable of that kind of restraint.
But also because Pool and Jones are so obviously trying to wet their beaks in self-serving ways instead of forming any kind of unified anything.

The Pool interview is an attempt to mitigate the situation—Pool is carefully stepping around the specific problem—Ye is towing two Nazis and talking their dialect, and did this in the company of Trump. It doesn’t fully work but Pool tries to make it work, post facto, routing his ire towards the general “identity politics” rather than the specific “that incredibly rich rapper just said Nazi stuff.” It didn’t work, and it will be interesting to see exactly where he redirects to: probably back to the milquetoast authoritarianism of “this happened because liberals went too far” which is his bread and butter.

The Jones interview was a narcissistic game of Hungry Hungry Hippos. Almost everyone involved lives in their private world and is there to use the others as a springboard to more clout—including a call in by Laura Loomer explicitly to play clout games.

What we’re watching is the far, far right version of what the far right has been doing with Ye since Trump was in office: they want to put their stink on the man, use him to reach new audiences and experiment with new formulas of being shameless propagandists but also make banks while keeping their own asses in the land of deniability.. It’s less an executed plan and more of a scramble for a lost ball.

But nobody’s getting the kind of sound byte they want: Ye won’t soften things in ways that match the preferred winky-face bigotry of Trumpists.

If you really want it laid out, listen to the last two episodes of Knowledge Fight. They know all the players at an incredible layer of depth.

I’m skiing again at Sunlight tomorrow, this time they’ll have top-to-bottom skiing available, they didn’t open the summit lift today because the wind was gusting up to 75 mph at the summit this morning. And then on Sunday I’ll be manning a tent at the bottom of Arapahoe Basin hawking the wares of the company I’m working for (Bishop Shreds).

My sister and I had to have the Stuckey Pecan Log roll with the cherry bits in it. That’s what we got whenever we stopped at a Stuckey’s store. Just the plain Stuckey Pecan Log wasn’t enough.

I saw that and thought that it is better than MCI’s like Ham and Mothers, or Ham and Sumbitches. Barely.

I ate C-rats on Euro deployments across the pond in KC -135s. It was also not unusual for us to fly 8-hour missions out of K. I. Sawyer and get C-rats for inflight meals. This was in the early 80’s.

Occasionally we got fresh fried chicken meals, but cold fried chicken at 35,000 feet was kind of meh. It was still better than C-rats, though. Most of that shit was just awful.
