“Justice Department and FBI officials disagreed back in August about whether their investigation into the handling of sensitive documents justified the search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. Fewer officials had doubts earlier this month, when prosecutors took an even bolder step: asking a grand jury to indict the former president on 37 counts,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“What turned the tide was an audio tape and other evidence investigators confirmed around February from meetings Trump held almost two years earlier and a thousand miles from the former president’s Palm Beach, Fla., resort.”

“That crucial evidence, along with notes from a Trump lawyer describing his response to the investigation, helped spur prosecutors to push forward with a criminal case.”

“i’ll be damned if we’re gonna be trump’s bitches” or something similar

oh and

it’s gonna be hard to argue against tapes.
both in court and in the jury room

Through sheer luck, I unexpectedly managed to knock off a huge item from my bucket list yesterday.

Patrick Stewart is probably my all-time favorite celebrity. I’ve wanted to meet him/see him in person for years now, but never had the chance. Also, he’s about to be 83 so there won’t be all that many chances left.

After I came in from doing some yardwork yesterday, this popped up in my social feeds, posted by one of Patricks pages:

I don’t live near any of these places, but it just so happens I’m heading out west on 10/11 to visit my dad in Vegas. A quick change of flights and tweak to the travel plans later and….BOOM. I get to spend an evening with Sir Patrick himself! (Ms. Cyborg is also coming along for the ride)

This is a small venue (capacity only 1200), so it should be a wonderful experience. I got real lucky. Tickets sold out in less than a day.

re: #379 William Lewis

I can tell you a lot of Dems in Wisconsin, especially women said, I hate Trump but hate Hillary even more. They really figured that no matter how bad he was, he’d be better than her.

I myself actually briefly had that attitude. I was disabused of the notions about Hillary by someone here; I wish I could find the post, but I believe it was a link to a point-by-point debunking of the “Clinton Body Count” rumors that had stubbornly persisted since the 1990’s.

One of the best guitarists I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing still hides his head behind the bose speaker and stands with his back to the crowd when soloing most days. It takes nerve to perform, different people handle it different ways.

The. Absolute. Best. Blues. Guitarist I’ve ever seen (and bear in mind that I have seen SRV in concert) walked away from performing because she couldn’t bear to do it in public. Nearly killed herself with alcohol before stopping performing.

Still plays for herself and her friends and partner but walked away from the biz.

Wonder if that dis-abusement is now spread more widely, or if there are still a lot of people who feel that way.

Nahh. Harris is easy enough to tar and feather in the eyes of the rabid right because she’s a woman of color. They don’t need to invent scary sounding conspiracy theories to discredit her, like they did for Bill (primarily; they just re-used their old handiwork for Hillary). They’ll just pull out the old Obama “sooper sekrit Muslim non-American WHAR BIRTH CERTIFIKIT WHAR” playbook.

re: #345 Nerdy Fish

Important to note that Hillary Clinton had, and still has, a bit of a public perception problem. Despite the fact that she’s very clearly not guilty of any of the charges that have been leveled at her, enough people believe she is that it may have materially affected the number of people who said, “I’ll never vote for Trump, but I’m not going to vote for HER, either.”

I can tell you a lot of Dems in Wisconsin, especially women said, I hate Trump but hate Hillary even more. They really figured that no matter how bad he was, he’d be better than her.

In 2016 all you had to do was listen to the callers I deal with at work and their absolute hatred of Hillary that oozed thru the phones like slime. They absolutely despised her and wanted her jailed or worse.

Speaking of which, apparently we’ve reached the recursive singularity, where AI “art” programs are starting to use their own and other AIs’ art creations in their training sets, and the quality of the product is starting to degrade as a result.

a study out today by Media Matters shows that cable news networks are “obsessed over Biden’s age while overwhelmingly ignoring Trump’s.” Biden is only three years older than Trump—80 and 77, respectively—and apparently in significantly better health, but in the week after Biden announced his reelection campaign, CNN, the Fox News Channel, and MSNBC mentioned his age 588 times, suggesting it is a negative attribute rather than a positive reflection on his experience, while mentioning Trump’s only 72 times.

re: #2 Eclectic Cyborg

I have recounted the story before in the comment section, but it’s worth a retell
I was in the United red carpet lounge at LAX and I was typing on my 11 year old MacBook Pro laptop. It was an ancient yet functional machine, formerly great device on its last legs.

Patrick Stewart walks in to the lounge and he is immediately greeted by well-wishers, of course, but then they give him some space while he settles in and I notice two things with amusement: one is that he has taken up a position directly behind me, and two is that he also has the identical 11 year old laptop
I think to myself wow even Patrick Stewart is a cheap bastard just like me and it somehow validated my decision to hang onto the machine for so long, wringing every last electron out of it.

So Captain Picard gets up to go get some tea and crumpets from the complementary service and he leaves his laptop unattended Meanwhile I continue to type as he’s coming back and He looks and he sees me typing on what has to be his laptop— because who else in the world has an 11 year old MacBook Pro, and he starts to storm over towards me with outrage, but at the last second, he notices that his laptop has been unmolested, and I, in fact, do have the identical laptop, and he composes himself instantaneously, and then returns to his seat in a very proper way, and he didn’t even spill a drop of the tea without further acknowledgment to me at all

I was fortunate to check off that BL item in July 1991 at the total solar eclipse in Baja California. We were on the same eclipse trip, I had my camera rig set up about thirty feet away from where he’d set up. Patrick was as avid a photographer as any of us amateur astronomers, so none of us bothered him during the event. He gave us a very engaging after dinner talk and Q&A session that night back at the hotel—you should have a great time!

“Donald Trump spoke on Thursday at a fundraiser on behalf of people charged in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol — even as he faces scrutiny from national and state prosecutors for his own actions surrounding the attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s 2020 election win,” NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “I’m going to make a contribution.”

(he didn’t make a contribution)

47
Dangerman (sigh...only in America)  Jun 23, 2023 • 12:05:59pm
The Washington Post has obtained internal Twitter records, including a copy of a Jan. 5, 2021, video call, that show Twitter leaders discouraged the platform’s trust and safety staff members from removing tweets they felt were calls for violence in the wake of Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss.

The video and the other documents, which were collected by the Jan. 6 committee but not released, undermine current Republican efforts in Congress to build a case that the tech companies were “weaponized” against conservative ideas.

Paramount+ had previously given the go-ahead to a second season of kid-focused animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, but the series has now been cancelled ahead of that. Additionally, the Hollywood Reporter notes, Prodigy will be removed from the streaming platform altogether.

The surprising decision to remove the series—which will mean a tax write-off for the streamer, a tactic we’ve also seen recently from Disney+ and Warner Bros.—affects a handful of other Paramount+ series beyond Prodigy, including Grease spin-off Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, which just wrapped on June 1. But the Prodigy news cuts especially deep, not least because the series is the first Trek show to end after just one season, but also because a second installment had already been confirmed. Now, that’s obviously not going to happen—at least at Paramount, as THR further noted that the show will “complete post-production on season two…and producers CBS Studios will shop both seasons to a new buyer.”

I never bought into any of the Clinton body count nonsense, but HRC had a lot of legitimate baggage and issues. If she didn’t, she would have cruised to the 08 nomination instead of losing to an unknown black man with a Muslim name.

IMHO, her tenure as SOS doesn’t look good in retrospect, between the Russia red reset button (a few years after Putin’s Georgia adventures), and the regime change in Libya (Benghazi accusations were nonsense, but she was a driving force for regime change, and the aftermath has been far shittier for Libya and the world than it had been under Gaddafi. It’s like she learned all the wrong lessons from Iraq.)

I was glad that Trump prevented a Bush v Clinton battle of the dynasties. Trump completely lost me when he appointment Manafort as his campaign manager.

And of course SCOTUS was on the line, and that was enough to make me support the blue team.

Yeah, that’s entirely possible. I know one Vietnamese shop assistant was quite surprised to see me buying a can; she said outright to me, in English, “You must not be Czech, because Czechs don’t like root beer. They say it tastes like cough medicine. Where are you from?”

So when I told her I was from Los Angeles, she wasn’t surprised at all.

“…After months of negotiations, the IBEW’s Railroad members at four of the largest U.S. freight carriers finally have what they’ve long sought but that many working people take for granted: paid sick days.

This is a big deal, said Railroad Department Director Al Russo, because the paid-sick-days issue, which nearly caused a nationwide shutdown of freight rail just before Christmas, had consistently been rejected by the carriers. It was not part of last December’s congressionally implemented update of the national collective bargaining agreement between the freight lines and the IBEW and 11 other railroad-related unions.

Russo:
“We’re thankful that the Biden administration played the long game on sick days and stuck with us for months after Congress imposed our updated national agreement.”

GOP moderates left squirming as McCarthy vows to ‘expunge’ Trump impeachments

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters Friday that he backs a proposed resolution that would “expunge” former President Donald Trump’s two impeachments.

“This is a symbolic resolution that is being pushed by Elise Stefanik, who is a member of the House Republican leadership, and [Congresswoman] Marjorie Taylor Greene, she is a close Trump ally, a staunch conservative,” said Raju. “They have put together this resolution what would call for the expungement of two of Trump’s impeachments from the last Congress.”

CNN: “…The US Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating after multiple Navy personnel reported receiving unsolicited smartwatches in the mail that could be installed with data-stealing malicious software, an NCIS spokesperson told CNN on Friday.

The news comes after the Army warned publicly this month that “service members across the military” had reported receiving the devices in the mail.

It’s unclear who is mailing the suspicious watches, but the devices are telltale signs of a counterintelligence and cyberthreat. When used, the devices automatically connected to wireless networks and cell phones, “gaining access to a myriad of user data,” the advisory from the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) said.

Wouldn’t the EU give the UK some serious side eye if they asked about coming back?

Surely they’d have to pay a price for leaving…right?

Doubt the UK would be allowed this time to use the pound and maintain their own currency.

GOP moderates left squirming as McCarthy vows to ‘expunge’ Trump impeachments

Bullshit!

Man, we’re pretty addicted to those embedded tweets around here, aren’t we? I don’t know if it’s time to cut off support for those too. But keep in mind that using the standard Twitter embeds means pages will use more memory and be slower to load, in addition to the trackers Twitter puts in them.

Should Putin fall, I can easily see Russia falling into regional warlordism. Ironically, the same fate Russian propaganda has been trumpeting about the U.S. after a civil war here they have been actively promoting.

I.e., Russian propaganda is conservatives projecting just like American conservatives do.

Addictions can be broken. We can post screenshots of any Tweet that’s interesting enough to do so, and Mastodon embeds pretty well. Reducing traffic to Twitter is the right thing to do.

How do mastodon posts compare?

Well, you don’t have to worry about trackers with the Mastodon embeds, and they use much less memory than Twitter. But they do have their own drawbacks; they can be slower depending on which site the embed is coming from.

I do have a pretty nice rendering library already mostly written for Mastodon posts, like the custom tweet library that no longer works. I’m thinking of porting it over to LGF, so they’d display much faster, and I could do things like popup images and video.

Blue Sky is Twitter 2.0, run by Jack. Mastadon is a distributed system that has a bunch of independent servers that can communicate with other servers under an umbrella.

re: #198 🔧-wench

Are mastodon and Blue Sky on parallel tracks?

Well, they’re both “federated” systems, which basically means anyone can set up a server that can inter-operate with other servers that use the same protocols. But Mastodon is based on the ActivityPub protocol, while Bluesky uses the AT Protocol. They’re very different but I know people are already working on ways to bridge them together.

It actually isn’t run by Jack - he’s not involved in the development or day to day operations, although he is still a board member of the Bluesky company. Jack spends most of his time on Nostr these days.

Maybe, maybe not. With the state of the Russian Army these days, the mercs might just be able to do some pretty significant damage on their way out. Either way, I’m perfectly happy to sit on the sidelines and watch these two idiots squabble with each other, and I’m sure the Ukrainian Army is also enjoying the spectacle.

And these mercs are pretty knowledgeable as to the state of the Russian army. And they don’t seem real scared.
