Orchestrion - an Excerpt From Pat Metheny’s Orchestrion Project

Music • Views: 15,227

This isn’t brand new, but I was surprised to discover I hadn’t posted it before; the first part of an amazing concert by Pat Metheny with his Frankenband, the Orchestrion, a huge assortment of automated instruments.

The Orchestrion Project was filmed at the former St Elias Church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in November 2010. It features Pat Metheny on guitar performing with the Orchestrion, a vast collection of mechanical instruments that surround Pat Metheny in this atmospheric setting. The focus of the performance is the Orchestrion Suite, a work written specifically for this combination and debuted on Pat Metheny’s Orchestrion album released earlier in 2010. Added to this are other tracks from across Metheny’s prolific career going right back to Unity Village from his debut solo album Bright Size Life in 1976 and including other tracks from the seventies, eighties and nineties. This is a unique collaboration between a master guitarist and the pinnacle of mechanical music.

Directed by Pierre & François Lamoureux.

Yeah but, “settler-colonialism” must be wiped out!

I think it important to establish and respect mutually and internationally recognized borders. Not just in Israel/Palestine

I have to admit when I grew up in Hawaii we went barefoot a lot. The locals would make fun of the haoles who couldn’t hang, and call them “tenderfoot.” So you pretty much had to, or some moke might kick your ass just for the hell of it.

23
Charles Johnson  Nov 12, 2023 • 4:57:09pm

An airplane is a lot safer than most places to go barefoot, but it’s just gross. I never went barefoot on a plane, but I did take off my shoes especially on long flights because your feet swell up. When Jarreau band flew business class (which wasn’t often) one of the things they handed out was a goodie bag with a bunch of stuff, including slipper socks for walking around the plane.

And when I am accused of being intolerant of the intolerant, I bring up Karl Popper’s response to the Intolerance paradox.as long as the intolerant allow themselves to be controlled by social norms, they can be dealt with. The tolerant maintain the right to fight the intolerant to protect society if social norms do not work.

Yes. Tolerance is a tactic, not an ideology. It is a method for getting along with others who do not think like you. There is always a plan B for dealing with those others who see your tactical tolerance as a weakness.

From Don Moynihan:

“…the second reason why ZBB can’t work. The political system can manage only so much conflict. Starting the budget afresh reach year massively increases conflict. Incremental budgeting focuses conflict around the change in the budget, not the base, reducing conflict. Our current Congress cannot even manage an incremental budget, routinely failing to pass appropriations bills on time.”

In case you think the Avengers’ movies weren’t an event, they are now a description of what is happening in America.

To be serious, I view the Democrats to be a bit like the Avengers: a disparate group of interests all thinking they are trying to do the right thing, frequently fighting among themselves, sometimes having to clean up after their own actions, and yet can really come together when everything is on the line.

“…During a brief excerpt from her deposition played during the Jan. 6 committee hearing Tuesday, McDaniel explained that Trump called her and put her in touch with Eastman, who then engaged with the RNC about the scheme over the following months.

“He turned the call over to Mr. Eastman, who then proceeded to talk about the importance of the RNC helping the campaign gather these contingent electors in case any of these legal challenges that were ongoing changed the result of any of the states. I think more, just helping them reach out and assemble them,” she said. “My understanding is the campaign did take the lead, and we just were helping them in that — in that role.”

So I have one about racisim (Stop pretending your racism is patriotism), one about the -isms (Why be racist, sexist, homophobic, or transphobic when you can just be quiet?), and an equality shirt. It can be fun watching people who read it and then realize that they wish they hadn’t, and I have had a few people like my shirt and a couple of thanks. (it’s not to say I don’t stand up for people when I have seen the need - I did yell at a guy in Walmart who decided to “Don’t you speak English?” to the cashier - but it doesn’t arise very often.) So my question to you is what kind of shirt do you think would work for me to show my support for Jews?

Tesla’s Cybertruck policy: No resale for 12 months

You can only sell it with Tesla’s permission. If you try, Tesla will take you to court, asking at least $50,000 and refuse to ever sell you any car in the future.

Now that is sure to drive sales.

It’s essentially unenforceable. The only way Tesla would know that someone sold their truck is if the new owner attempted to transfer the vehicle to their online Tesla account for things like Supercharging costs. The workaround is to just change the contact information on the original account and then hand that account’s password over with the car. If you change both the first and last name it might send up a red flag, but people change their emails all the time and Tesla doesn’t demand any kind of proof that you’re the owner on file when you take their cars in for service. Additionally the NHTSA registration data is totally opaque to them, manufacturers can access it obliquely to contact current owners for recalls but that’s just them telling the system which VINs need to have notices sent out, they can’t use it to see who the current registered owner is.

Also, what happens if:
1) a person buys such a truck using a loan;
2) the buyer defaults on the loan;
3) the truck is taken by the bank/credit-union.

It seems like Tesla is really trying to do something that is absurd.

But we have not seen the supposed agreement.

Perhaps Tesla does not really “sell” the truck, but is planning on leasing it for the first 12 months. Then the lease has one giant balloon payment at the end for the buyer?

In such a manner I guess Tesla could control who gets the truck the first 12 months.

Tory Bitch on Wheels gets sacked for saying the quiet parts out loud

Mrs Braverman was sacked following days of a political firestorm sparked when she wrote an article for The Times newspaper, accusing the police applying a”double standard” and took a tougher stance with right-wing demonstrations.

The article was not cleared by No10 and it later emerged Mrs Braverman had defied a Downing Street request to tone the article down.

Not for her policies or attitude, just for the way she presented them to the press.

Nah, Braverman’s basically been digging her political grave for months now. The first time I heard of her when listening to commentary on UK politics, it was coming up with a scheme to cram asylum seekers onto an old barracks barge that the government had bought from an oil company. Then the same wwek they started actually doing it, somebody leaked to the press that the Home Office had tests showing the barge was riddled with Legionella and they’d gone ahead with putting asylum seekers aboard anyway. Of course, when they finally addressed it, her office passed the pound to the Health Ministry who in turn acted as though they’d only found out the same time the press had. The government paid several million pounds for a barge they can’t use, while two others they’d also bought were denied permission to dock because of paperwork issues.

She’s also up to her eyeballs in what’s being called the “Rwanda Scheme,” which is this idea of sending 200 asylum seekers (out of a backlog of 75,000) to Rwanda to have their applications processed. The way the Home Office has tried to spin it is they’ll be resettled there if their applications are rejected, but the reality is that the Rwanda government will just kick them out. The Supreme Court is currently set to rule on the legality of the scheme this Wednesday, but the Home Office seems set to start pushing for the government to ignore a negative ruling and push forward with a variant of the same scheme.

And in the last two weeks, she’s shat all over UK/Irish relations, referred to homelessness as a “lifestyle choice,” portrayed migrants as rapists and murderers, and referred to pro-Palestinian protests as “hate marches” and characterized not only participants but supporters as supporting terrorism. The capper wasn’t the article, it was basically being responsible for the British version of 1/6, calling on the far-right to “defend the Cenotaph” from a pro-Palestinian march that was miles away, leading to riots on Armistice Day that put dozens of cops in the hospital and over 120 rioters in jail. Her response? Blaming “both sides” for the violence and voicing the bare minimum support for the police that her asshole supporters put in hospital.

If you’re asking why she’s doing all this, it’s because she wants to be Party Leader and figures the only way to achieve that goal is to basically make a public spectacle of pissing in Rishi Sunak’s cereal. There’s been calls for days now to sack her, but Sunak has been dithering and even had her sitting next to him during the King’s Speech debate as the leader of the Labour Party called him weak and pathetic for refusing to hold her to account.

I don’t know what he thought would happen, tbh. Minnesota is a fairly reliably blue state, and Joe Biden is effectively the Democratic nominee unless he himself says otherwise. How close is this getting to the political suicide of Phillips now getting primaried from his left by a Democrat and him not having the support to successfully get the endorsement of the GOP and then successfully holding onto the seat?

(I won’t say it’s impossible since the incumbent county DA here just essentially did that. Lost the Democratic primary. The local GOP offered to endorse him and he was on the ticket as such. And won.)

The odds are getting increasingly grim for him. I think I saw here late last week or over the weekend that someone had already announced a primary challenge. The DFL party apparatus is not lining up behind him, as we saw here this morning. The GOP here is pretty batshit crazy (reminder that we have Tom Emmer, who at one point was in the running for Weaker of the House), and I don’t think Philips is quite crazy enough to be able to effectively pivot to get their support - and certainly not enough so to get votes; here, in the white Republican suburbs, his anti-Trump record is going to be enough to sink any attempt to court the crazies’ favor. If the DFL backs his primary challenger, he is officially fucked.

A gay Israeli soldier recently unfurled an LGBTQ flag on Gaza soil - making good on a self-made vow to bring a rainbow pride flag into battle against Hamas.

Yoav Atzmoni, 31, told The Post Sunday he posed for photos holding up a rainbow flag with the words “In The Name of Love” written across it while stationed in Gaza — in defiance of the territory’s deep anti-gay laws and imposed rhetoric.

The images began circulating online over the weekend as some social media users noted how the flag was a powerful statement considering how LGBTQ people are oppressed in the strip under Hamas rule.

Atzmoni told Insider late last month he hoped to display the pride flag on his tank and bring it to Palestinians.

“I remember as a child how important that flag was for me,” he told the outlet.

You can really tell that they never expected things to get this bad, that public sentiment would turn so suddenly and sharply against them once they finally managed that decades-long goal of overturning Roe. So now they’re desperately trying to move the goalposts, presenting “fetal pain” laws that they’d tried (and failed) for years to build up support for now as the “compromise” because the unspoken threat is if you don’t agree with them then they’re just going to push forward with total bans.

Right. Roe was the compromise, the cut-off point being viability, the idea that states could ban abortions past the point at which a fetus could survive outside the womb. Now the GQP want to push it back to “fetal pain,” because they say the alternative is abortion being legal “up to the point of birth,” and anybody who doesn’t agree with them is effectively supportive of “killing babies.” But once they get enough people to agree with them that their “compromise” is agreed upon, they’ll start pushing 6 weeks “fetal heartbeat” bans with the same BS about how you either agree with them or you support “killing babies.”

Yeah, this is exactly what I thought went on all those months ago when the Beltway reported that Trump’s lawyers had been seen at the DOJ:

Politico reports that ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl’s new book on Trump’s post-presidential life claims that Trump lawyers Trump attorneys Todd Blanche and John Lauro met with Smith’s team over the summer and gave them a list of reasons why charging Trump with crimes related to his efforts to illegally remain in power would be a mistake.

According to Karl, Smith sat through through the presentation without saying a word.

“As Lauro spoke, the prosecutors took notes, but they said nothing,” Karl reports. “Smith waited until Lauro was done speaking and then, without commenting on what he just heard, he bid the Trump lawyers farewell. According to sources with direct knowledge of the meeting, Smith did not ask a single question. And aside from the pleasantries at the start of the meeting (including the offer of a glass of water) and the goodbye at the end, neither Smith nor the two prosecutors said anything at all.”

re: #152 Targetpractice

It was the GFY moment that Trump dreaded. He was up against someone who would not be cajoled or prodded into inaction.

Trump faced the immovable object of his own doom. Out of Trump’s criminal conduct arose a prosecutor whose sole purpose was to see his conviction and incarceration for trying to overthrow the government, end democracy, and the rule of law. And Trump’s lawyers couldn’t do a damned thing to stop it.

154
lawhawk  Nov 13, 2023 • 6:14:41am

Because Trump’s lawyers think that they can control the narrative, and if they cross examined him when prosecutors were giving their case in chief, they could redirect and it would have gone horribly wrong.

It will still go horribly wrong.

The defense seems to think that calling bank officials who were more than happy with the Trump financial arrangements is proof of no wrongdoing, except that had any of them done their proper due diligence or realized all of the numbers were wrong, they would not have extended the levels of credit Trump got at the terms Trump got, and would have likely given other businesses those financial terms/credit.

For other businesses, it was lost opportunities we’re talking about. If a bank has a limited means to lend, then Trump’s fraud meant other businesses that were clean and proper asking for loans, and were denied credit were screwed thanks to Trump’s fraud.

That’s part of the case we’re talking about too. It’s not just the fraud on the banks and creditors and investors. It’s the other businesses that were screwed thanks to Trump’s fraud that weren’t able to secure loans from these banks.

You kind of wonder why he had that meeting with them at all, if his mind wasn’t about to be moved, but I think it was simply a matter of observing all the forms and formalities of the process. Leave them no avenue with which to appeal. They had their chance to dissuade the prosecutors from pressing charges; they had their motion practice; they had their discovery; they had their day in court. They can argue before the appeals court until the cows come home, but the procedures were followed by the book. Which is now being thrown at him.

Sure they will, Wayne.

Far-right host claims Black and Latino voters will support Trump once he’s convicted

Far-right conspiracy theorist and host Wayne Allyn Root told Roger Stone in a discussion Sunday that he thinks minority voters will ultimately come out more for Donald Trump if he’s convicted of a crime.

“Well, I, I’m with you that Black votes are the key or minority votes are the key here — Black and Latino votes,” Root told Stone. “And every time they indict him and if they convict him — God forbid, but you and I both know those juries and those judges are all biased and against us. If he’s convicted before the election — which I’d say is probably almost a certainty. Now, in one of these cases — maybe more than one — I think Black voters who believe the system is rigged against them come to Trump even more.”

He didn’t fully explain why Black and Latino voters would like Trump better if he were convicted, but it is a campaign that has been promoted since Aug. 2023 by Fox commentators.

Axios reported in September that Trump’s campaign thinks “he can make inroads with Black voters by pushing an I-am-a-victim-just-like-you storyline.”

The site says that it is “unclear whether Trump’s favorability with Black voters has increased beyond the 8 percent or so share he received in 2020. (Recent polls have suggested Trump’s support among Blacks is improving, but pre-election polls in 2020 overstated his support).”

msnbc.com commentator Ja’han Jones called the idea “desperate.”

Writing in August, Jones explained, “The lie about Black folks being attracted to alleged criminality didn’t die with Rush Limbaugh, you see. It lives on in the conservative movement — only now, they’re framing this as a good thing instead of suggesting it could destroy the country.”

“But if you don’t trust Black people’s intelligence to begin with — if you don’t believe in their ability to discern fact from fiction — it’s easy to assume that many of them would be fine voting for a criminally indicted hatemonger like Trump just because he’s been arrested,” said Jones.

There’s no actual evidence of the claim, both Axios and Jones explained.

Root suggested that Michelle Obama would be the candidate if Joe Biden dropped out. The former first lady has made it clear numerous times that she has no desire to be involved in politics again. There are several other political leaders of color in the Democratic Party than Michelle Obama.

Secret Service agents assigned to defend President Biden’s granddaughter opened fire late Sunday on a group of people attempting to break into an unmarked Secret Service car in Washington, DC, officials said.

“On Nov. 12 around 11:58 p.m. in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, Secret Service agents encountered possibly three individuals breaking a window on a parked and unoccupied government vehicle,” the agency’s spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, said in a statement.

“During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck. The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units. There was no threat to any protectees and the incident is being investigated by the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service.”

I don’t remember whether it was Popehat or Emptywheel, but I remember reading at the time that it’s a common courtesy for prosecutors to invite attorney(s) for the defense in to talk with them towards the end of the investigation and basically give them a chance to present reasons why prosecutors should not go forward with formal charges. Offer evidence that hasn’t turned up in the investigation, offer names of people who’ve not been interviewed who might have relevant info, and other stuff that prosecutors may have missed. And I remember remarking at the time that Trump lawyers would do no such thing, that instead they’d get in front of Smith and try to argue that it was a “bad idea” to go forward with charges and he’d be better off just letting their client walk.

Allen, Texas:

Security officer leaves gun unattended at Story elementary school

Principal Claudia Harrison explained that the school security officer left his firearm in a bathroom reserved for teachers and staff. Less than one minute later, a teacher found the firearm and alerted administration, after which an Allen Police Officer who was on campus immediately took the firearm. Harrison said no students accessed the bathroom and everyone was safe.

The letter went on to explain that the security officer was not an Allen ISD employee. He was contracted from local security company L&P Global Security to meet the requirements of Texas’ new House Bill 3, which requires all public schools to now have at least one armed security guard at each public campus.

This isn’t going to disrupt pickup truck manufacturing or get people to buy these trucks. Not in the slightest.

It’s a mess of design and manufacturing. The tolerances necessary to get everything to match up are revealing every imperfection on the manufacturing process and it shows Tesla doesn’t have the fundamentals in place. It has Musk. That’s it.

That being said, the truck market is so hyper competitive that the trucks they (GM, Ford etc) make are fantastic. They have all the bells and whistles that truck owners want.

This is just a novelty in that market. A niche product. Can you use it as a work truck? Can you attach a boat or trailer? Who is this for?

The low bar is set by an all white-male council. It only gets better from there.

That Dana White

Thank god. I mis-read yesterday’s headline and thought Vanna White was traveling in bad company.

It’s a hellsite, and the comments are all hellish.

Considering that it is St. Paul, our capital city, I’m surprised the featured comment in the post didn’t say it is already garbage.

Far-right conspiracy theorist and host Wayne Allyn Root told Roger Stone in a discussion Sunday that he thinks minority voters will ultimately come out more for Donald Trump if he’s convicted of a crime.

All black and Latino voters are criminals so, ipso facto, they’ll support criminally convicted trump.

Maryanne Trump Barry, older sister of Donald Trump, has died at 86

Maryanne Trump Barry, the older sister of former President Donald Trump and a former federal judge, has died, according to sources. She was 86 years old.

She was discovered in her Fifth Avenue apartment at about 4 a.m., sources told ABC News. There were no signs of trauma or foul play.

Emergency crews responded to a call of a person in cardiac arrest, the sources said.

Definitely pretty ugly, looks like it was designed by an engineer. If the rearview mirror is an LED display (because a mirror would be blocked), I will tell you from experience that they suck because you don’t notice things, like flashing red (or blue) lights because it is all the same intensity.

I find the backup camera on my Subaru worthless over half the time. Light coming into the car pretty much washes out the display and I can’t see anything. (The laptop-size display in the center console of my friend’s Tesla is at a much closer to vertical angle, is larger, and does not have that issue. It also pretty much hogs that area of the front seat area however.)

Judge Engoron’s got a point: The state has to deal with evidence as stupid as this, whether they like it or not. You might as well address it head-on and get somebody who can tell the judge why this valuation isn’t taken seriously by anyone except the idiot who owns the property.

Yep. That’s him.

I am pretty sure that is Dan White, the owner of the UFC. Could be wrong though.
