re: #179 Backwoods Sleuth

The victim, Elijah McClaine, worked for my son for a time last summer. My son says he was the nicest and hardest worker he’s had in a long time. Elijah suffered from a thyroid disorder where he could never get warm, even on a 95 degree day. He was always wearing very heavy clothes to keep warm. Once they were working on a paving project and Elijah asked if he could lay down on the very hot asphalt to warm up. The foreman said he didn’t care. Elijah did for a while and later said that was the warmest he had been in months.

Of course he was a black person and the cops thought he was a bad guy due to the heavy clothes along with the EMT’s thinking he was heavier than he was due to the heavy clothing.

He died way too young.

It broke my heart when I learned he did this after he died. What a loss!

If you have a Bluesky account, you can find out your DID (Decentralized ID) value by appending your Bluesky handle to this URL and browsing to it. (Take out the extra spaces I inserted to hide it from the auto-link feature.)

https:// bsky .social/xrpc/com.atproto.identity.resolveHandle?handle=

What constitutes a valid “handle”?

I thought mine was “freetoken”, but when I try I get the error message:

{“error”:”InvalidRequest”,”message”:”Error: handle must be a valid handle”}

It’s everything after the @ sign. So I put it in with thedopefishlives .bsky .social (no spaces), and it worked.

I tried that with “freetoken” and that is why I got the error. Is there supposed to be something after the username that makes a proper handle?

Season’s greetings from Chicagoland!

I am going into the holidays recovering from the flu. I got sick this past Sunday, but was fortunate to get started on Tamiflu Monday afternoon. Now it is Friday night and I am feeling about 70% better. Will need another week to fully recover, but feeling very fortunate.

I am also going into the holidays recovering from the loss of my mother, the funeral was 3 weeks ago today. She beat the odds by making it 30 months after the diagnosis of glioblastoma, but the last half of that was just miserable. Even with so much time to prepare, it is tough adjusting at the end of the terrible journey.

The good news is that as both a troubled loner and longtime expat, the holidays are not nearly the trigger for me as they are for most people…years of experience powering through. Even so, this season is the opposite of festive here.

My gut says there’s a strong before and after 2020 pandemic effect on Tesla build quality that’s directly attributable to Musk’s red pill reaction to shutdowns and unmasking as an alt right shitlord. You can just physically see a bunch of pure cost cutting moves starting in the last half of 2020: fewer paint and interior options, the removal of physical stalks from the S and X, removal of radars in the 3 and Y followed by removal in all cars followed by the software bricking the radars in the cars that shipped with them, the removal of ultrasonic sensors, the stupid yoke steering wheel with touch sensor turn signals that turn with the yoke. All of that was just about cutting costs and selling it with lies and a patina of jet airplane aesthetics. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if there were a ton of less visible structural, steering and suspension related cost cutting measures in parts and sourcing that accompanied all that.

It’s not all about gerrymandering
A lot of it is

Just by chance after reading about the WI decision, but before seeing the chart, I did a calculation based on 54% Democratic votes (randomly turned out to be exact!) and was able to prove that it was theoretically possible for the GOP to get 90% of the seats with 46% of the vote. This is such a blight on our nation. Now, that could also happen without gerrymandering, given extreme population distributions, but that’s not the case here. Hope this decision stands up and justice is done.

Of course gerrymandering does not affect statewide offices but any positions that are based on these districts are certainly subject to this extreme suppression of voter representation.

I wish something would fix the gerrymandering here in Texas, but it’s states like Wisconsin and North Carolina, where statewide offices are for a different party than the one that controls the legislature, that shows how bad gerrymandering is.

A few days of elevated temperature is not a sign of apocalypse — I remember 1967 when we had 2 feet of snow in Chicago January 26-27, while, a couple days before, the temperature was 65! The 27th was especially memorable because, not knowing the university had officially closed (was at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park), I walked to my statistics class and was the only attendee except for the professor, who did his lecture to an audience of one. It was the only class I attended for a couple days.

Nah, power is the point:

The Summer EBT cards would be issued directly in the child’s name and Reynolds argued that the program wasn’t compatible with existing meal or food assistance programs under the umbrellas of the Iowa Department of Education and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“HHS and the Department of Education have well-established programs in place that leverage partnerships with community-based providers and schools who understand the needs of the families they serve,” Reynolds said.

“If the Biden Administration and Congress want to make a real commitment to family well-being, they should invest in already existing programs and infrastructure at the state level and give us the flexibility to tailor them to our state’s needs.”

Translation: “The Feds won’t just give us a big pot of money we can use to spackle over holes we’ve blown in the state budget, so we have no use for it!”

Cruelty and stupidity, in our age of cheap processed foods, obesity is a sign of poor nutrition and not just overeating.

And from a party that lost their shit about Michelle Obama planting a garden on the WH grounds and promoting nutritional meals, the party that used to argue that ketchup and pizza sauce counted towards nutritional guidelines to excuse cutting funding for school lunch programs, and regularly bitch up a storm whenever a state or city tries to put restrictions on how big a Big Gulp you can get, the idea that they suddenly give a shit about child obesity is laughable.

No, in this context “child obesity” is up there with “welfare queens” and “young bucks,” intended to invoke in your mind images of poor folks taking these EBTs and filling grocery carts with Cheetos and Coke bottles. It’s the usual class warfare horseshit meant to make you conclude that anybody who qualifies for these cards would be getting fat and happy on your tax dollars if Kimmy weren’t there to insist that money go towards those who “need” it. And that the only way this can be assured is if the Feds just cut the state of Iowa a huge check with little to no oversight over how it’s actually spent.

Congrats!

A North Dakota politician told police they’d “regret picking on him” and threatened to call the state’s attorney general during his racist and homophobic rant as he was arrested for drunk driving after a Christmas party last Friday.

Rep. Nico Rios, a Williston Republican lawmaker, was arrested and charged with DUI and refusing to provide a chemical test, according to the Bismarck Tribune.

He was pulled over when officers noticed the pol failing to stay in his lane which prompted Rios to become “verbally abusive, homophobic, racially abusive and discriminatory,” according to an arrest record obtained by the outlet.

Rios was captured on bodycam footage trying to pass off his business card when asked by the officers for his license and registration during the stop.

The lawmaker was put through a field sobriety test and refused to take a breathalyzer test, telling officers he only lived two blocks away from where he was pulled over.

“You guys are going to regret picking on me because you don’t know who f-k I am,” Rios told the officers.

A South Korean religious sect leader whose sex crimes were featured in the popular Netflix series “In the Name of God: A Holy Betrayal” earlier this year was sentenced to 23 years in prison on Friday, court officials said.

The Daejeon District Court in central South Korea said that it handed the prison term to Jeong Myeong-seok after convicting him of sexual violence against three of his female followers from 2018-2021.

Jeong, 78, is leader of the Christian Gospel Mission in South Korea, which is also known as Jesus Morning Star, or JMS.

A court statement said that Jeong’s convicted crimes include “quasi-rape” and “quasi-imitative rape,” which court officials said meant illicit sexual intercourse with a person who was unconscious or unable to resist.

Sure, let’s propose an unconstitutional law (since the Constitution says that the properly credentialed EV from each state WILL be counted). I mean, if a law could be passed that determined that a states EV would NOT be counted, some real shenanigans could be accomplished. “Let’s only count states that Trump won.”

“Will” means will like it took three years to settle that “shall” meant shall.

Gym is closed tomorrow and Christmas so I plan to hop the bus and walk on the Venice boardwalk tomorrow.

Monday will just kick back and do my annual viewing of WC Fields in The Bank Dick and then just go on the internet and play chess.

Anymore Christmas is just another day to sleep in…but with the realization that next Christmas I’m going to be retired…ah counting down right now it’s R Minus 6 months and 8 days…

Federal employees will receive pay raises averaging 5.2 percent — more in some high-salary areas — under an order President Biden signed Thursday that delivers the biggest increase to U.S. government workers since the Carter administration.

The salary hike for the federal civilian workforce of close to 2.2 million people is the heftiest since a 9.1 percent average raise in 1980. It’s 0.6 percentage points higher than last year’s increase, which itself was the highest in two decades, and will take effect in the first full pay period of 2024, starting Jan. 14 for most federal employees.

The military is set to receive a comparable increase in January in the $886 billion defense bill that Congress approved this month.

Biden’s executive order is the final step in the annual process of determining how much government workers will be paid the following year. That process has often featured a divisive debate in Congress over the value of federal workers and what they should earn compared to their private sector counterparts…

Congress has in some years adjusted the annual White House proposal on federal pay up or down. But this year, after Biden proposed the 5.2 percent raise in March in his budget for fiscal 2024, Republicans in Congress — engulfed for months in a partisan battle over raising the country’s debt limit and then in an internal struggle over the House speakership — have been silent on the raise this year. Absent any action by Congress, the recommended raise goes into effect by default. Most lawmakers have already left Washington for the holidays, signaling the end of the legislative year and allowing Biden to finalize the pay hike with Thursday’s executive order.

Since about 85 percent of the federal workforce is outside the Washington region, ” … this pay increase will benefit families and lift economies in every single state,” Doreen Greenwald, national president of the National Treasury Employees Union, said in a statement. “Higher salaries are essential to keeping these skilled workers in the civil service and helping agencies recruit new employees to their valuable public service missions.” The NTEU represents employees in 35 federal agencies and offices…

My car is making a sound like…

Biker goes to the doctor with an odd complaint.

“Doctor, my farts sound like a motorcycle.”

“Uhhh…”

“Listen!” The biker turns around, bends over, strains and farts and sure enough, out comes a sound like “Honda!” He does it a few more times, “Honda! Honda! Honda!”

After getting the biker to drop trous and spread cheeks the doctor takes a look. One quick diagnosis later, he explains — “You have hemorrhoids which have got infected and the resultant pus craters cause the expulsion of intestinal gasses to make that odd noise as they exit your anus.” The biker looks puzzled so the doctor simplifies things for him.

“The abscess makes your fart go Honda.”

Impossibly Easy Coconut Pie

1 cup flaked or shredded coconut
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup Bisquick™ Original Pancake & Baking Mix
1/4cup butter, melted
1 3/4 cups whole milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
4 eggs, beaten into submission…

Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 9-inch pie plate with shortening or cooking spray.

In medium bowl, stir all ingredients with fork or wire whisk until blended. Place pie plate onto cookie sheet. Pour filling into pie plate. Place filled pie plate on cookie sheet into preheated oven.

Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until golden brown and knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Chill in the fridge for an hour.

Slice it and top with REAL whipped cream. For extra decadence top with a couple of Luxardo REAL Maraschino Cherries!

The Army Said Tank Blasts Don’t Harm Troops. His Case Raises Doubts.
Researchers say troops’ brains may be injured by blasts from firing M1 Abrams tank guns and other weapons, even if they measure below the Pentagon’s ceiling for safe exposure.

. . . Mr. Beyer joined the Army right after high school and had an unusually long career spent entirely around tanks, including six overseas deployments, three of them to Iraq. His final assignment was as a tank instructor at one of the Army’s busiest training posts, Fort Irwin in California.

A typical tank crewman fires about 120 rounds a year, and works around tanks only for a few years before leaving the military or moving on to other assignments. Mr. Beyer never moved on.

A spokesman for Fort Irwin said that while most training was done with lasers instead of live rounds, a typical tank instructor would be exposed to the firing of 120 to 240 rounds a year. Other tank soldiers estimated that in Mr. Beyer’s career, he could easily have experienced more than 3,000 blasts.

He also was hit by a roadside bomb in 2008 that left him temporarily dazed.

My ex knew of a foster family that planned to adopt their 6 foster kids. A week before Christmas, the dad passed away. This created a huge financial burden on the family and ruined their Christmas plans.

So my ex contacted lots of stores asking for a bicycle donation for the kids. She managed to get 6 stores to agree to donate a bike to the cause. This was a wonderful and amazing thing to do for the family.

On the other hand, she notified me on Christmas eve that I needed to go get the bikes and then assemble them that night so they could be gifted. Given all my other chores, that was not appreciated. But I did it for the kids and heard it was a major success, helping them through a difficult time.

I was very happy to have helped them have a good Christmas.

As a former tanker, I’d bet that the IED was 90% of the problem if he followed training and protocols. Now, I will admit that his total numbers are high but I’ve know Master Gunners (the guys who set up every tank in the divisions and had to test fire them all and train all the gunners) who had similarly high round counts back during the 80s ~ 90s during the time of the M-60A3 to M1 transition and none of them had issues leading me to believe an undiagnosed TBI from the IED explosion is far more likely a cause in this case.
