Side comment from the Bedford trip back and forth on the PA Turnpike is that 3-4 locations that were wall-to-wall Trump stuff a few years back have none of it currently.

I doubt the area has gotten less conservative and my cousin essentially supported that in things she mentioned. However, I also recall a lot of pro-Ukraine signs and flags as well in area before and wonder if the Trump and GQP Putin-worship has been rubbing people the wrong way.

No, it’s just these weirdos. Pat Metheny uses a stand sometimes so he can quickly switch instruments, but FF has turned it into a look.

Rando1

Remember the outrageous media coverage & reaction after the Fetterman & Oz debate in 2022?

Fetterman went on to win by the biggest margin in the state in an open senate contest in 48 years.

Response rando2

This comparison to Fetterman is on point. The Hur report shines a spotlight on Biden’s biggest weakness, but it doesn’t tell us anything new. Yes, Biden is too damn old, frankly, I’d rather have a younger candidate. But he’s been a good president, and he’s the one who can unite Democrats and appeal to indies better than anyone else on the Dem stage today. And outside of the GOP base, most everyone else recognizes that the alternative of Trump is an utter abyss.

re: #321 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

Was out east in Bedford, PA yesterday to have lunch with one of my cousins who lives there. Was really nice weather for walking around a small town and for the drive time as well.

Ate lunch at a restaurant in an old tavern outside of Bedford that was built in 1762.

[Embedded content]

Another piece of highway Americana I saw but did not stop at is “The Big Coffee Pot” A small building that is a 15’ tall coffee pot that used to be a small store and was originally built next to a cafe along US 30.

I used to drive past that Tavern back in the 1970s-1990s when I was visiting my parents in Pittsburgh while living in the DC area. I always meant to stop and try it. But, to my regret, never did.

When I was doing Turnpike runs back and forth two years ago setting my move up back to western PA the tavern was a sort of mile stone since it’s easily visible from the Turnpike and is roughly at the halfway point between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, I remember that there were a lot of folks whose parents or grandparents immigrated from Eastern Europe. Not only in Pittsburgh, but also in the small towns further out in the rural areas. Most of them weren’t farmers/gentry but instead the tradesman (plumbers, electricians, carpenters, welders, etc), small business owners, government workers (letter carriers, game wardens, police) and coal miners.

I had to go back to re-read that release, since at first glance it looked like Rep. Gallagher was stating that he had chaired the “Select Committee OF the Chinese Communist Party” - which I thought was rather a strange sideline for a Republican Congressman…

Then again, WTF is this “Select Committee”? Are these the same clowns who didn’t know the difference between China and Singapore?

My scariest earthquake experience was when I was in LA in 1990 or so. I was driving to work during rush hour and was in stop and go traffic on an overpass in the 10/405 snarl. The overpass started rocking and no one was going anywhere. But California builds for that and everything was fine.

Northridge was much worse but I was gone by then.

Because he hasn’t yet learned that appeasement never works, so he appoints Republicans to investigate Republicans and Republicans to investigate Democrats, so as to avoid the appearance of bias.

Mexico Looks to Bypass U.S. Gun Companies’ Special Legal Immunity

[…]

Litigation against gunmakers is almost always tossed out because of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, or PLCAA, a 2005 federal law that protects gunmakers from being held liable for crimes committed with their products.

But the decision handed down last month shows that Mexico’s case differs from earlier lawsuits in two important respects: the violations that the country has accused gunmakers of committing, and the overwhelming amount of evidence it has to support its allegations.

[…]

The lone survivor [the only US case that got past PLCAA], a suit brought by the city of Gary, Indiana, is ongoing.

This Taylor Swift thing is a hell of a demonstration of both how this mindset invents enemies for the pleasure of imagining their suffering and how once you buy into reaction it directly follows that other people’s choices and desires are yours to control (because their body is not their own).

Five years ago they could project their positions and desires onto Taylor Swift…not caring in the slightest who she was…but now they feel threatened/diminished so they have to invent a giant conspiracy to explain why she isn’t the person they want her to be.

At times like this I always think about domestic violence, which often amounts to a man hurting or killing a woman because she fails the impossible task of being the imago in his head. Both the conservatives leaning into reaction and those going straight to fascism have in common a sense that if other people do not perform their assigned function, they should be battered into submission or destroyed.

In this incredibly no-stakes, is-not-strategic situation they cannot help but appease that appetite, fantasize about suffering because suffering is, axiomatically, justice when it happens to people they don’t like.

re: #21 Nerdy Fish

Because he hasn’t yet learned that appeasement never works, so he appoints Republicans to investigate Republicans and Republicans to investigate Democrats, so as to avoid the appearance of bias.

Right: and the results usually turn out the same: Republicans take it as a fundamental assumption that any investigation of any Republican for anything is a baseless, partisan, harassment witch-hunt, and any results* should be summarily dismissed or ignored. And they also follow its corollary: that any Democrat being investigated for anything is to be assumed guilty a priori, and that any exculpatory findings are to be dismissed and denounced as “whitewash”, “cover-up”, etc. Both sides, etc…

*Whether or not the subject of the investigation is actually guilty of, or responsible for, anything is generally irrelevant to GOPers: neither their officialdom or voter base seem to care.

At this point in time Taylor Swift is much much bigger worldwide than her first fan base of pre-teen and high school female white Country Music fans.

Since her pivot towards Pop she has greatly widened her fan base to worldwide dominance and now $$ billons in sales. She can at this point tell these racist hicks to basically go fuck themselves and grow her worldwide fan base even more.

I’m not really sure how to react.

My point is that we’re beset by a form of reaction that views existing outside their control as injury requiring self-defense.

Taylor Swift is a billionaire, she’ll be fine. But if you’ve been listening to the actual people talking about this…the teenage girls who are her fans might not be, because they’re also being positioned as a kind of non-person political target. And more generally, “these are people who spend all their time imagining that nothing is random and celebrate death and suffering” is a pretty notable thing in and of itself, because it contextualizes shit like…all the actual people dying as byblows of American institutions that have assumed reactionary policies.

When I started bike commuting I went and tried dozens of bikes. I knew my Giant with rim breaks was not well suited for rainy days, and I wanted something with lots of braze-ons for carrying things. But the first time I rode this bike I was amazed at the cushy feeling. The steel frame and wide tires made it feel like I was just gliding, but the tucked in rear makes it feel fast enough. I went back and tried Kona, and All City, and Treks, etc. Nothing feels quite like it. I added the klunker bars a few months ago and swapped over to the hydraulic brakes and it’s even better.

Some people should be taxed on their ss benefits
especially if they have lots of other income
Taxing ss benefits is a back door way to means testing

You already paid taxes on that once. You shouldn’t be double taxed on your Social Security benefits.

Just remember it was ol’ President Pruneface who started taxing Social Security benefits…

Technically that’s not completely true: you paid taxes only on your contribution; your employer contributes a matching amount and you did not pay taxes on that part.

Some people should be taxed on their ss benefits
especially if they have lots of other income
Taxing ss benefits is a back door way to means testing

Yes —Definitely. It makes sense to tax those who have significant other post retirement income. Currently as Dangerman says, the problem is that the threshold limits for taxing are set too low.

Lift the cap on taxes but keep it in the benefit calculation. Make millionaires pay their fair share.

She’s at a break in her concert tour. Her next stop is Singapore for seven nights, March 2-8. It is a rare performer who can confidently book a 50K venue for seven days. But she has apparently sold out. I expect there are people flying in from all over Asia to see her.

re: #39 The Ghost of a Flea

I’ll again mention my theory that much of the fear and rage over her in particular can probably be attributed to her physicality as approaching a kind of Lebensborn racial purity and fertility ideal. Her likeness also plays some role in determining the demographics of her fanbase, which coincidentally tends to resemble the Lebensborn target endpoint population, which is why they’re panicking over Taylor in ways they don’t for equivalent status activist celebrities like Beyoncé and Alicia Keys.

Totally different situations. Medicare currently isn’t solvent in the long run. The costs associated with Medicare are independent of the retiree’s income.

For Social Security, the higher the income, the higher the benefit. Do you really want the wealthy to be getting Social Security benefits of a million dollars per year? Correcting the cost problems associated with Social Security is relatively simple, and won’t require total elimination of the cap on wages subject to the tax.

Medicare not so much given that new treatments can be prohibitively costly.

It was a different kind of panic for Beyonce…but I think it all stems from the basic white supremacist impulses that still exist in American culture; the whole thing about Beyonce is fear of a powerful, uncontrolled/uncontrollable Black woman, while Taylor Swift is a powerful, uncontrollable white woman who turns her back on white supremacist power.

Therefore: fight

Dad of course insists his mind is right, though yesterday he called me twice within 20 minutes and had no clue about talking with me the first time. The next steps are to encourage him to limit his driving and allow someone to come and clean the house a couple times per week (that someone also being an in-home care nurse). That is kind of the problem. Nuance and subtlety are not very useful these days. They can be spun. Besides her comment about his age being a legitimate concern, it is her criticism about how he is running his campaign and how he could do it better. We need full-throated support that cannot be seen as anything but support. Biden knows how to run his campaign. Why is she denigrating it by saying he does not know how to connect with young people but she has a better idea? She is not part of the campaign so she is just making assumptions and saying things through ignorance that do not help. IMHO

The MSM will not touch any of this. And that is why I no longer have any MSM subscription. I’ve got my prob;ems with Meidas Touch but I check them out every day. Not so the NYT or WaPo.

The GOP 24/7 Bullshit Machine is cranked up to 12 with the “Senile Joe” bullshit and the Corporate Controlled Conservative Press is endlessly reciting the latest Frank Luntz talking points for Trump.

It’s up to President Biden and his allies to amplify Trump’s gaffes. Put them in ads, talk about them on the morning shows, bring them up every chance you get.

I haz a bit of a sad about this.

I grew up on the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Very sad to see it bought up and morphed into… whatever it is today.

Also, I have been watching the professional culture war operatives on NoVa local social media spread nonsense about how there is supposed mass criming and that it is all due to ‘them’. Looking at the statistics, it is, of course, all nonsense.

This phenomenon is not new. During the beginning of the Civil War a lot of Southern milita was motivated that they were protecting their loved ones from the dangers of New York and Philadelphia innercity gangs of Irish immigrants who were supposedly coming to the farms in rural Bugtuck to loot and rape.

I delivered both the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and Pittsburgh Press for six years. Hurts to see how the Press died and Block morphed the Post-Gazette into just another cog in the Republican 24/7 Bullshit Machine.

That is happening. Sorry for the Twitter links but that is where the dscussions are happening NOW amongst Biden supporters. I wanted you to be able to see the videos.

The DNC war Room has this, today:

Biden-Harris HQ has this:

The Lincoln Project has this:

Phil Filipkowski:

So many more.

Meanwhile, much of the alternate media that youngsters follow are all over Trump’s comments about NATO. This will really begin to filter through because, just like giving up on Ukaine, giving up on NATO will hurt companies doing international trade.

If you’re hand-wringing, you’re doing it wrong.

No hand wringing. Getting the word out and fighting back. I hope.
