Hi. Today, we’re taking a look at American men – are they in crisis? Why do they turn to misogynistic manosphere creeps like Andrew Tate? What else can we offer them besides anger and contempt?

Tens of thousands of rural, conservative eastern Oregon residents are so frustrated with their liberal urban neighbors they’ve decided they can no longer even share a ZIP code.

The “Greater Idaho Movement” would shift the Oregon border 200 miles west, a secession effort aligning the conservative farming, ranching and logging communities of eastern Oregon with their like-minded neighbors to the east. A dozen counties in eastern Oregon have already approved the plan, and voters in Crook County and the county seat of Prineville are considering the nonbinding measure with results due Tuesday.

When is the last time a sitting President raided the former President’s home?

You made a lot of good will with the Catskill game farm
Don’t jeopardize it now! ;-)

And the answer is when was the last time it was necessary?

Plus, believe it or don’t, the “sitting president” had nothing to do with it

The plumber just left after extracting a $630 cheque to replace my outside spicket, even though it was recently replaced in January. Behind the bar is why that cost us money under a putative warranty work.

First, $75 to come out sixty miles to my house.

On the day we left for Texas in February, the temperature was -4°F / -20°Commie.

The week before we came back in April, there was a massive blizzard here, and the temps got down to -20°F / -28°Commie.

The line which goes to the spicket goes up against gravity to the spicket, and the cutoff valve in the cellar slowly leaks. That’s what I suspected happened: a slow trickle of water pooled in the line, and the line split when it froze.

The repair was to replace the spicket, replace the line with the new plastic stretchy plumbing, and $300 cost for the cutoff valve inside the cellar (those things are friggin’ expensive). He also added a second drain line at the low point along with another valve, so the line can be drained when it’s not in use.

They charged 50% for the labour, resulting in the final bill.

In the mail today from the Veterans Administration, my latest lab results. Ugh but some humour.

Ohio lawmakers are confident President Joe Biden will be on the November ballot, but how exactly that will happen remains the question. The fix won’t happen through the legislature, said Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens, R-Kitts Hill, and Ohio House Minority Leader Allison Russo, D-Upper Arlington, during separate gaggles Tuesday morning.

“There’s just not the will to do that from the legislature,” Stephens said.

Russo said she was skeptical the fix was ever going to happen in the legislature.

“We’ve seen the dysfunction here in this place,” she said … I think at this point, you’re probably going to see either, you know, some sort of inner party effects or perhaps court action…”

“Even Alabama, their legislature was able to get this right,” Russo said.

That was a Trump lie. He wasn’t even at Merde-a-Lago when they served the warrant on his staff (it was not a raid).

They waited to serve the warrant until he was out-of-town, to avoid the appearance of ordering around or cuffing a former president.

Chuck is right. DT is going all out on the lies.

Because it’s dawning on him that by this time next week, he could be a convicted felon and facing incarceration based on the judge’s statements following the verdict.

34 felonies. Watch for a clean sweep on all 34. And because of his complete unrepentant nature, combative attitude towards the Court and the rule of law, Merchan could have him remanded to custody pending sentencing.

Anyone who isn’t Trump would be facing that outcome. So, when you hear all this blathering BS about two standards and double standards on the rule of law and justice in the Trump case, this is what Trumpists want everyone to ignore. Trump would be in jail pending trial in the classified docs trial, and therefore all the other cases would be subordinate to that case.

The woman who started the “Biden tried to assassinate Trump” thing, according to a comment on WaPo’s article about it, is Julie Kelly, married to John Kelly Jr, a lobbying for agribusiness giant, ADM. She has been doing things like this since 2015. Her big thing has been fighting the International Agency for Research on Cancer because of their work on glyphosate. Amazing. Roundup. (Pers. note: my husband had bladder cancer attributed to farm chemicals. It was not fatal, fortunately, but he lost almost all of his bladder.) The IARC says they have received “a pattern of consistent but misleading reports” once they classified glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans. So she’s on my bad list anyway.

It’s not on the calendar, but it hasn’t been adjudicated. The supposed rationale is that Cannon didn’t want to gum up her calendar waiting for SCOTUS to rule on the immunity claims.

But it hasn’t been dismissed or otherwise tossed.

I seem to recall that every few years there’s a story about how this group in one of the western states - CA, ID, WA, OR, want to secede from their state to join another state or form their own new state.

It’s the same nonsense each time too.

Drvie through far northern California and you’ll see evidence with signs promoting the state of jefferson. I’ve seen them for 20 years or more, there, all faded and decaying on the roofs of barns and falling-over road signs along I-5. AFAIK, promoters have never gotten beyond those to placing a ballot initiative on the docket because they know they’d be squashed like bugs.

re: #70 Patricia Kayden

Why don’t they move to Idaho? Ridiculous people.

Because the people that want this imagine themselves as regional oligarchs by entitlement, and want to “secede” to a state where they feel the state’s central power will enhance their regional power.

It’s not about having a community with shared values, it’s about having power to make your community do what you want. Moving means giving up that power.

And somewhere in here you get into the “feudalists in denim” aspect of this: throughout the US West you have people that hold most of their capital in the form of land, and have an anachronistic understanding of hierarchy in which land ownership is a kind of superior class that should not be constrained by “town people” who are seen as interlopers that shouldn’t have franchise. Interconnection with far-away cities…who represent a different kind of capital-based hierarchy that can generate more clout than land-holding…is intolerable. This results in stuff like the Sagebrush Rebellion and kind of shit the Bundys get up to.

(this is a precise and intentional inversion of the actual settlement of the US West: small settlements came first, massive farms and ranches came after and effectively did the same thing as the Enclosure in Europe…taking all the commonwealth and privatizing it. The current movement is in no small part ressentiment that the US government stepped in and nationalized a bunch of land that was earmarked to be divided up like chunks of Westeros between cattle barons, mine operators, and Deseret nationalists.)

It’s regional oligarchy for the kind of people that shot at Wyatt Earp.

In Kentucky’s primaries yesterday, far-right “Liberty” Republicans made some gains against establishment Republicans, proving they aren’t just a Northern Kentucky thing. Led by congressman Thomas Massie, they believe in Covid, vaccine and election denial theories, oppose aid to Ukraine, and are extremely homophobic and anti-trans. One GOP moderate lost primarily because he voted against an anti-trans bill which his opponent, named Thomas Jefferson (really) made the #1 campaign issue.

Hold off and let the Republican assholes hang themselves.

Let the conspiracy-minded usual Trump clown show contingent stew about how they can spin an actual in-your-face political hack job by banning Biden from the ballot. Should make for entertaining sound bites and trip over your own clown shoes series of gaffes and direct public contradictions all while leading up to the final leg of the Election.

Don’t count on any utterly corrupt current SCOTUS ruling. But do expect actual pitchforks and torches accosting Republican assholes on a daily basis. They will cave from cowardice, not from any sort of honor.

Here’s the thing: If the Democrats take it to court, the corrupt clowns on the Calvinball Court will just delay it until after the election, then rule in favor of Biden: “Oh, he should’ve been on the ballot, but we just couldn’t get around to it in a timely fashion. Ooooops.” I still think it’s just procedural shenanigannery, in the end, but it’s starting to get real fucking annoying dealing with these obstructionists who are determined to take whatever petty swipes they can at the lawfully elected President.

There was a short gap in the rain, they set up the podium and Sunak came out of Number 10 and began his suicide note by wittering on about how much good the Conservatives had done for the nation over the past few years. The heavy rain started again, “giein’ it pelters” as they would say in my old home town. No time for an umbrella, no chance of breaking off and doing it again so eventually he got to the good bit and told us what we already knew, that this Parliamentary session was toast and the election was going to be in early July.

The visuals probably lost the Tories another ten seats in the upcoming slaughter.

I’ve brought this up a couple of times, of the DNC’s foolishness in holding their convention so late.

There is nothing to prevent the DNC from nominating Biden >before* that date, other than the DNC’s own arrogance.

Yes, I say arrogance.

The whole deal about the Chicago convention is to play to one particular segment of the Democratic Party’s base.

Which is fine - parties have to do that - but to do so in light of now more than one state pointing out that the DNC’s nomination will be too late to get Biden on the ballot.

This is not Republican f*ckery as much as just general American foolishness regarding elections.

There is legitimacy to the criticisms (usually by the extreme leftwing of the party) that the DNC establishment feels entitled to their ways and their position.

Hard to say. My most political Dem friend in Columbus thinks DeWine will fix the mess—not sure why she thinks that, but she doesn’t seem worried about it and feels confident Joe will be on the ballot.

I don’t think he’ll take Ohio anyway, but I think it’s important that he be on the ballot for Sherrod Brown’s sake among others.

Yeah, I don’t talk politics in open spaces any more, it’s genuinely been getting worse since the time a dude marched out of his house to scream at my Mom for voting for a Muslim as she did a morning walk.

I posted this Judith Butler quote the other day because it pretty much feels like my life:

Talking to people involves the realization that QAnon talking points have been adopted in slightly-watered-down versions because they’re gnosis—questioning their premises is immoral (are you a pervert or a terrorist?) but also axiomatically Wrong. It’s simply impossible to discourse with people because they’re innoculated against proof and reasoning.

Like, observe that conservatism constantly points to “traditional” social structures that incorporate absolute authority…”the family,” “church,” “the military”…as guides for what society should prioritize and realize that it hasn’t been otherwise since President Garfield was shot.

Government is supposed to be small because it’s the back-up force for existing power structures, not because individual liberty is valued such that non-intervention constrains government size.

Small government means letting alone slave owners but providing laws to ensure their “property” can’t liberate themselves. Small government is doing Banana Wars and turning the couped nation over to private interests rather than starting a full colonial occupation. Small government means it’s no business of anybody else how hard a man hits his kids…or his wife…or his servants.

The government exists to add formal enforcement power to existing hierarchies, that’s what conservatism has been since it was a justification for monarchy that countered the philsophies that motivated the French Revolution.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in the Greater Idaho movement. The better half’s parents live in Malhuer County and she was living up there for a couple of years as well, so I’ve spent some time there.

The election for Malhuer had a turnout of 35% and the vote was like 3000-2500. I don’t think there is actually the support that people think there is, even if there’s a sense that the state government in Salem ignores the eastern half of the state.

Also, a lot of those border counties have a lot of weed businesses that are contributing to the cities and counties that will suddenly no longer be able to do business if they became part of Idaho.

The actual fear I have for AI is that it’s going to be the Great And Powerful Oz from our fundamentally-corrupt enforcement agencies.

We’re already justifying surveilling and killing people with opaque declarations of confidence that turn out to be black boxes with nothing on the inside. But with the pre-existing cultural understanding of computers as lacking human fallibility…expressedly part of the current hype cycle…the power of a computational black box to create the pretext of justification while rendering the logic of justification near-impossible to follow for already unjust systems just can’t be discounted.

re: #148 Mike Lamb

Didn’t take them too long to arrive at “The n***er had it coming!”, did it?

It’s horrifying watching them work backwards to find the reason.

One of the few pages I’ve ever done on LGF was documenting the pipeline from conservative social media to conservative outlets that Trayvon Martin was buying Skittles to make lean.

This doesn’t even make sense, you use Jolly Ranchers to make lean, but it’s a detail that allows those that want the shooting to be just to feel confirmation that the dead person deserved it and thus the whole situation could be dimissed without thought. The absolute pettiness of it still stands out to me: everything about the dead black man must be rendered suspect.

I’m dabbling in Judith Butler lately and I’ve run into the idea of abjectification…where you render a person not into a thing, but a kind of being that is outside of norms and thus can be used or harmed without triggering internal or social upset. I didn’t know the term before but it’s the thing I’ve been obsessing about for years…the process you can see people do of confabulating a story such that the dead people just don’t bear notice.

if they are that fearful of everyone, if they think everyone has a gun and can kill them in an instant, if that’s how they approach their job, then they should be 100% behind leading the fight for reasonable gun accountability. not even draconian confiscation, control and registration, etc. just reasonable stuff that could make them less fearful in their work.

www.washingtonpost.com/elections/20…

The thing about “conservatives” is that if you follow their behavior rather than their self-description, the pattern that forms is that they will devolve or evolve who holds what power opportunistically, with no regard for “size” of government.

For years their goal was privatization of the state because that gave coercive power to capital holders they view as the most important holders of franchise…the people that “deserve” representation by government. But this wasn’t an ideological commitment it was what seemed like the best viable strategy. Conscience laws were a similar experiment in atomizing antiabortion and anti-queer sentiments.

With the process of judiciary capture working in their favor, they’re now willing to explore more involved state intervention in the lives of individuals, but aren’t confident enough to simply throw it immediately to the federal level. Hence we’ve returned to states’ rights…which has always been a cynical, strategic division of power.

If the IRS decided not to enforce some tax rule because, say, they are understaffed and don’t want to spend an entire staff-year running down some esoteric violation, does that mean the IRS should not actually enforce tax laws in the future if they are better staffed?

It’s one thing to jump up and down and declare we are a nation of laws (as is done when trying to pin down Trump, for example), but then it is ok to skip some law because, well, the other guy does it?

I have no fondness for the GOP, Ohio or otherwise.

But sloppiness on the part of any party, in this case the DNC, is not something to keep doing.

Here is what minorities know: they have to be extra careful in following laws because they will be scrutinized more closely by the society (and the enforcement arms.)

I think the DNC does not really, really understand that.

I think the DNC is lazy, arising from too much entitlement. It’s not just this issue (of ignoring state laws/rules) but on several issues.

The entire abortion thing blew up because elected officials didn’t want to do the work (politically risky work) of encoding abortion rights into laws, instead relying on a 1970’s SCOTUS ruling.

Political parties fail when they get too big, too entrenched in the status quo.

Personally I think what we’re watching will LEOs is part of the post-9/11 alteration of cop training in ways that confirm and approve the notions that cops are soldiers engaging in an occupation.

There don’t have to be formal rules about how cops kill because the implicit systemic norms inform who is among the occupied and thus inherently suspect. Sometimes cops overstep and kill somebody not rendered abject, or behave so openly egregiously, that a consequence must be created to avoid actual insurgency. Formal accountability systems create means for the occupied to defend themselves legally and, ultimately, physically, and therefore are contrary to the actual intention of policing: the free exploitation of the occupied while limiting their self-determination.

This generates the paradox of American gun ownership in which “gun owners” will justify anything the police do as necessary and practical until the police do it to them…because “guns” are just a kind of microcosm for caste distinction and the biggest injustice is the cops treating the high caste people like the low castes.

Hence every single car dealership owner’s wife or county ombudsman screaming “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM” in handcuffs while filmed in vertical video.

Comment at the WaPo, says what I’ve been saying all along.

That’s who she is- a rank opportunist without a moral compass (unless it’s politically expedient to have one).

Addendum: the same people that like violent cops make excuses for war crimes. Troops and police exist to harm people they don’t like first and foremost, and constraints on action are obstacles to that, the only important objective.

Hence the bafflement about the idea of PTSD in both groups: how could doing a good (and fun) thing cause distress?

Here’s a good primer on the meaning behind the flag that Alito flew, and a discussion of how the ideas behind the seven mountain mandate justified the J6 insurrection.

tldr - Alito is absorbed in some serious white Christian nationalist extremism.

Again—the difference here is that the SOS specifically granted an accommodation for this exact scenario for the GOP in the past. This isn’t “prosecutorial discretion”. It’s unequal, arbitrary enforcement of the law.

Of course it’s Republican ratfucking.

That said, it is still stupid for the DNC to give Republican ratfuckers such an easy ratfucking opportunity.

This is war, and the D party establishment doesn’t really seem to get that.

For the third season of Reacher, they needed an actor to play a character described in the book the season is based on as so big he intimidates Reacher. They found Olivier Richters.

Cynical me believes that is because the big-wigs just shuttle from party to party in swanky Manhattan high-rises, or vineyards north of SF Bay.

This is not the time for lethargy among party apparati.

re: #2 Shropshire Slasher

The so-called “Constitutional Sheriff” of Weld County, Colorado tried the same thing a couple years ago, arguing against the liberal commie socialists in Denver. A petition was circulated by the county commission for Weld County to secede from Colorado in 2013, which failed. (It turns out the very rural northeastern county needs funding from the state.) Six of eleven counties voted against the ballot proposition including Weld.

They tried again in 2021 under the banner of “Weld County WY,” saying they wanted to join Wyoming. Gov. Mark Gordon (R-WY) said “we would love that.” Gov. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) said “keep your hands off Weld County” to him in response.

Weld County has been trying to secede since 1858. It was created when the corner was lopped out of the Nebraska Territory to create Colorado territory, creating the Nebraska Panhandle. It was extremely sparsely populated as was the rest of western Nebraska, so there was not much pushback from Nebraska Territory about it. The first attempt at secession in 1858 started immediately after gold was discovered on the South Platte River.

The county seat is Greeley, with 108,000 people. Greeley has two colleges. The liberal city of Greeley is outnumbered 2/1 by rural wingnuts.

Like many conservative governments, Weld County obfuscated their illness and death numbers during the Republican Plague.

Weld County borders:

Kimball County, Nebraska - northeast
Logan County - east
Morgan County - east
Adams County - south
City and County of Broomfield - southwest
Boulder County - west
Larimer County - west
Laramie County, Wyoming - northwest

It’s not unethical to grift Trump supporters. It hasn’t even been a grey area since the coup attempt. That’s money that might otherwise go to Trump or the GQP.
