Tulsi Gabbard’s aunt was murdered.

Radio New Zealand, May 31, 2024

Outpouring of grief following death of acclaimed Samoan poet and writer

Tributes are pouring in for an acclaimed American Samoan poet and teacher who was murdered last Saturday in Apia allegedly by a fellow poet.

According to local police Dr Caroline Sinavaiana-Gabbard, a retired professor from the University of Hawai’i Manoa, was found dead at the Galu Moana Theatre in Vaivase-Uta.

The Samoa Observer reported on Sunday that police had charged playwright and poet, Papalii Sia Figiel, with manslaughter with the death but on Monday upgraded the charge to murder.

The 78-year-old Dr Sinavaiana-Gabbard, who was also a historian and environmentalist, has been described as a peaceful and calm person.

Resist using a screen. Get up, take a squirt, drink a glass of water, go back to bed. No phone, no tablet…the internet will be there in the morning (or not if we’re all lucky).

Remain in a somnolent state.
Remove CPAP mask
But don’t turn off CPAP.
Urinate - if need moisten mouth
Replace CPAP mask
Go back to bed.

My Trump score card to date:

(Let me know if I forgot something)

Two House impeachments, but no convictions by US Senate.

Trump University shut down and Trump paid $25 million settlement in federal court in 2017.

~$450 million NY State Civil judgment and interest for Tax Fraud in 2019

Trump is prohibited from operating a business in NY.

Trump paid $2 million in court-ordered damages to eight different charities for illegally misusing charitable funds at the Trump Foundation for political purposes, and is prohibited from operating a charity in NY.

$80 million Civil judgment in multiple defamation suits to E Jean Carroll.

Convicted of 34 NY State felonies

if he’s sentenced to prison, he loses the right to vote.

He’s prohibited from getting access to classified information based on 34 felony convictions

Trump has several federal criminal cases and one GA state criminal case pending for a total of 54 counts.

If he is a “political prisoner” what the fuck is he doing at a UFC event tonight?

Silly me, it’s a stunt to fundraise off the marks!

Trump Takes His ‘Political Prisoner’ Grift to UFC Fight After Conviction

Self-proclaimed “political prisoner” Donald Trump showed up to a UFC fight in New Jersey on Saturday night just two days after he became a convicted felon following his hush-money trial in New York.

The former president walked in alongside UFC President Dana White, looking a bit more downtrodden than in his previous UFC appearances. The event appeared to provide a much-needed ego boost for Trump, with a built-in cheering crowd for the presumptive Republican nominee whose “civil rights” were supposedly “totally violated” when he was found guilty on Thursday of falsifying business records to pay off a porn star.

“Donald Trump is in the building and the former president getting a standing ovation from the assembled masses,” the announcer said, noting that Trump was getting a “staggering” round of applause as his entrance was shown on the jumbotron screen. The crowd could also be heard chanting, “We want Trump” at one point.

Trump could be seen shaking hands with the crowd as he made his way to his seat—except for New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers, who ignored the former president as he passed and stayed seated.

Earlier, Trump shared a grinning selfie with UFC light heavyweight Alex Pereira. His appearance came shortly after he took to Truth Social to declare that he was “going to UFC tonight!!!”

White has previously spoken of his longtime friendship with Trump, telling The Pat McAfee Show back in February: “I’ve been friends with this guy for 20 years, and when he shows up to the fights… The guy is a fight fan. He’s been a fight fan.”

Toho’s involved with both current arms of the franchise, so, either way, they win. In fact, the current “Americanized” version by Legendary/WB helped to revitalize Toho’s OG Japanese home-market version (there were no Godzilla movies between 2004 and 2014, when the first Legendary/WB Godzilla came out; because of the box-office success of that movie, Toho came out with Shin Godzilla in Japan two years later, with three animated Godzilla films released in the interim before Godzilla Minus One last year).

The parent company of UFC, which is also the parent company of WWE which happens to be tightly connected to Trump, exists to make money off of the ancient fear of losing masculinity.

The entire business segment (professional fighting) is one of the most shoddy, ill-thought industries.

So of course Trump loves it.

“A cop has the legal authority to shoot you dead if he feels the least bit afraid.”

“And what if a cop’s actions scare the bejesus out of me and I shoot him dead in what I feel is self-defense?”

“Then that’s murder and we’ve the Gawd-given authority to execute you as a cop-killer.”

I also might have voted for McCain in 2000 if he had won the nomination.

And there was a time when I admired Chris Christie for his bipartisan work with Obama on Katrina relief and for standing up against the Islamophobes of his own party for a Muslim judge he appointed.

ADX Florence (outside Cañon City, Colorado) is no joke. Most prisoners there are allowed out of their cells for an hour a day, in a sparse exercise yard. Federal inmates that end up at ADX Florence is basically permanent solitary confinement.

I no longer consider myself a believer, but isn’t comparing a vile, crass, cussing, philandering racist like Trump to Jesus Christ blasphemy? There is absolutely nothing Christlike in or about Trump.

I’m no believer, but IIRC, the Book of Revelation described some fella who was vain, boastful, and hoodwinked the multitudes into thinking he was some kind of prophet or that Jesus had sent him.

Trump must ‘immediately’ schedule a pre-sentence interview with NYC probation. Playing hooky may add to his legal woes. (Business Insider (Business Insider, yesterday)

Moments after those 34 “guilties” rolled in on Thursday — making him the first former president convicted of a felony — Donald Trump was handed two copies of a standard New York City Department of Probation form.

Titled “Court Order for Investigation and Report,” it would have been quickly filled out by the judge’s clerk with Trump’s name, address, and the trial results, according to attorneys and court staff familiar with such documents.

And according to a copy of the standard form obtained by Business Insider, the bottom would read in all capital letters, “The defendant/respondent is instructed to report immediately to the department of probation” on the courthouse’s 10th floor.

“It would piss the judge off to no end,” Rodriguez predicted of Trump failing to submit to a pre-sentencing investigation, especially given his history of gag order violations and disruptive courtroom behavior.

Never a good idea to piss off the judge. Trump’s gone the extra mile and heaped buckets of manure on the judge, the jury and the entire American judicial system to boot.

Believe it or not, I’m thinking Judge Merchan might well throw the book at him.

Because there’s nothing Christian like in today’s Christians.

They should be out bombing women’s clinics, fighting each other like the Thirty Year’s War, or crusading against everyone who disagrees with them, or killing people with epilepsy, or hanging witches, or suppressing science (they still do that), or enslaving vast numbers of people, &c., like True Christians (tm).

They don’t do that now because secular societies outlawed their violence. In countries where secular laws are weak or non-existent, they are still violent.

I’m going to head off to bed. I’m tired. Catch y’all latrer.

Oh, yeah. And if Trump declines or refuses a pre-sentencing investigation, I’m sure that’ll be duly noted by the DA and Judge Merchan. A complete and total lack of remorse or contrition, and indeed, even the awareness that he’s done anything wrong.

Like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump gets the book thrown at him. And what could make it even better? If he’s remanded into custody and sent to Rikers Island right then and there on 11 July.

He can attend the GOP convention via Zoom or send his spawn to accept his nomination in absentia. 😄

He’s not going to do it because, like everything else about the FO that comes after the FA, he thinks it’s beneath him and that participating would be an admission of guilt. So he’ll simply refuse to sit for the interview, expecting his lawyers to find some way at the sentencing hearing to get him the lightest sentence possible. And if Judge Merchan brings the gavel down on his head instead, he’ll just whine to the press about how “unfair” it is that he’s being treated in such a fashion when he’s Donald Trump, the once and future king of America, Inc!

Sincerely, I don’t believe Don Sr. is a drug (ab)user. Obviously, having no visibility into his private life, I can’t say that for certain, and we know that his White House administration was awash in all kinds of illicit prescriptions. I think the guy just truly believes that the justice system doesn’t apply to him, and the only way he’s going to participate in this “farce” is if someone makes him. Unfortunately, “making him” is the entire point of the law enforcement arm of the justice system, so there is every chance that he will end up getting hauled in for the probation interview - politely, of course, because the NYPD is perfectly capable of preserving a man’s dignity when it’s an affluent white man.

Probably not, because the presentence interview is voluntary, it’s not required for the court to move ahead with sentencing but failure to show up for one would get most other defendants swiftly kneed in the jimmies by the judge at sentencing. The most he’ll probably get is a call from someone in Judge Merchan’s office in coming days noting that he hasn’t scheduled or sat for an interview and failure to do so would be viewed negatively by the court. Considering his attitude towards Judge Merchan and the court’s authority in general, the odds are the most positive response they’ll receive is excuse-making from his lawyers about why he can’t sit for the interview (i.e. I’m the future president, too busy to participate in this “farce”).

Of course, then July 11th will arrive and he’ll be sitting in the court, looking like the bitter old slug he is when Judge Merchan asks why he failed to sit for the interview and only gets back excuses about “timing issues” and “unavailability.”

The potentially dire consequences be damned; he’s never had to suffer consequences in his life, so why should this be any different?

Just did some reading about the NY process of presentencing. One interesting aspect is going to be the E. Jean Carroll case. While civil, it did determine that Trump sexually abused her. The Access Hollywood tape indicates that this is common for him. This could be used in the report to determine the level of punishment. He could receive a “public safety factor,” which would disqualify him from minimum security prison, even if he was never convicted for the sexually abusive conduct.

One big purpose of the presentencing document i to allow the defendent the opportunity to get their side of the story in the record. Blowing it off will only hurt him.

Kash Patel, a former Trump administration staffer and ally, suggested one way forward: Congress should subpoena the bank records of Merchan’s daughter, he said. The daughter became a frequent target throughout the trial - she worked as a Democratic consultant and has fundraised for Democratic politicians. Ohio senator JD Vance called for a criminal investigation into Merchan, and potentially his daughter, whom Vance said was an “obvious beneficiary of Merchan’s biased rulings”.

I hope that by the time I am old and need to be taken care of on a day-to-day basis that there will be machines to take over most of it.

For starters, there is a great shortage of old-age care personnel. Secondly, those machines could free up the existing care personnel to provide the personal services and contact that will still be needed.

On personal news:

Took us a while longer than we expected due to some installation issues, but our whole home backup generator seems to finally be running correctly. Some issues we ran into should you ever want one:

1. The generator required a ground wire attached to the battery but this wasn’t in the manual that shipped, so the company had to come back and install it.
2. The gas regulator had to be moved because anything closer than 5 feet to the generator voids the warranty
3. The regulator, it turned out, wasn’t suitable for the generator and a special one had to be ordered.

All of this took a few months to get settled and figured out. The company was good about fixing everything. Kudos there.

This morning I went out and simulated a power outage and it kicked on, powered the house, and we went around turning on appliances before shutting it off. Everything worked as expected.

There’s a master power switch to turn it on/off. The display panel has one button to reset-wifi. Nothing else I can see. Will look again later - contractor has built a temporary wall in my garage that makes it hard to access right now.

In that master power switch box, you’ll see a breaker that says “utility power”. That’s the breaker that signals to the backup to start. In our installation, that powers automatically when power goes out, but I’m also able to simulate it by just flipping it to off, which tells the generator to start. If yours isn’t automatic, you should still be able to just switch it to off manually, which will then start the generator. You shouldn’t need an app.

This video shows how ours works:

I get the impression from the recent Doctor Who episode that Moffett and Davies have issues with the rich.

The theme running thru Netflix’s The Gentlemen is that current nobility in the UK is the result of generations of those families being the most successful gansters.

It’s directed by Guy Richie and good watch.

I’ve been hearing a lot about the shortcomings of our time-honored but otherwise contrary imperial system of measures. Australians in particular condemn it as “uncivilized,” an apparent admission that Oz itself was a barbarous backwater until it went metric less than 50 years ago. I know metric will not fly here, since various pundits and witchdoctors evangelists have condemned it as “gay” and, worse, invented by the French.
To that end, I am devising my own system of measurement, one tied to the needs and perceptions of suburban consumer units, er, families.
In my system, distance and area would be measured in football fields, with the deca-football field replacing the mile. Football fields are not square but then neither are acres so nothing would be lost in measuring area.
Weight would be in Bransons. This is the weight of what a typical consumer could eat in one sitting at a Branson Missouri all-you-can-eat buffet. This would be divided into 15 snacks and 165 nibbles. Why not ten, you ask? What are you? A Communist?
Finally temperature would on the Brass Monkey scale, where zero is the point where their gonads fall off and one hundred where you can fry bacon by tying a strip around their neck.

June gloom here on the coast…like clockwork. May 30, 31 - sunny and warm. June 1, 2…cool and grey.

Took the dogs for a walk and chose a long sleeve t-shirt. Probably should have gone with a full hoodie sweatshirt. It was lightly breezy and chilly, but it was a damp chilly. Fog still clinging to the hills provided a nice grey haze. Dogs enjoyed it though, and I did soldier on and do the full loop with them rather than shortening it.

That’s the worst design idea I’ve seen in a minute, offers nothing but pain and regret. Powering the front wheel at all is just asking to wreck, and adding significant weight above and in front of the axle means it’s gonna handle like absolute dogshit. Also, front wheel has a lot less weight over it so it’s likely to spin out, which increases tire wear on top of the increased wear from the motor’s friction interface. Which all adds up to an increased likelihood of having a very bad day.

Olympic Trials are at the end of the month, to select the team to go to Paris. US Men’s gymnastics is probably at its best place-for the present and the future- than it has ever been.
My son competed in this event last year in the Junior division. He moved up to the US Men’s Senior Elite division, and the qualification is much tougher. He is in the same competitive division everyone who could qualify for the Olympics. Things are going very well for him though:
