Tech Note: Entry Rating Listification and Image Replacement

Science • Views: 2,319

The image replacement technique about which we pontificated at length yesterday has now been applied to the entry rating buttons (not the comment ratings… yet).

If you still haven’t fully recovered from the annual festivities and have no idea what we’re talking about, these are the rating buttons that are at the bottom left of each front page article. They now have slightly darker “rollover” states (pure CSS, no Javascript image swapping), and a third “disabled” state, all combined into one image file.

Because pictures speak louder than words, here’s the background image for the upding button, with all three states visible:

Apart from those differences, they should act the same, Bob willing; it’s been tested in the major Mac and PC browsers.

(IE6 was a pain, but you already knew that. Floating elements really brings the bugs out of the chromework in that browser.)

UPDATE at 1/1/09 6:33:24 pm:

Those of you still plugging along with Internet Explorer 6 may notice that these images look a little funny. The spaces between the icons in the image above, for example, show up with a faint blue background instead of being transparent as intended. This is because IE6’s PNG transparency support is hopelessly broke down and busted. There are methods to work around IE6’s issues, but they don’t play nice with background images.

So consider this tiny cosmetic flaw our meager attempt to encourage the world to move on and leave IE6 on the hard drives of yesteryear.

I want to replace the image I get when I turn sideways in front of the bathroom mirror. I don't dare ask Charles to help. He'll tell me to forget software and start riding a bike.

Firefox 3.x does not have a snap-in to run Oracle 11i. So there are some issues Firefox fails at..
Somebody needs to be working on the snap-in for R12.. Otherwise..
Firefox you are dead to me..

The troops should be wary of Obama, his loyalties are conflicted.
However he is weak & if it looks like backing the troops is politically expedient he will go that way.

Hmmm...

Charles moved the comment system from html to ajax (javascript) because it was lighter on the servers, but moving an image from javascript to CSS (which is html I think) makes the image process lighter? This computer stuff is confounding.

Well, using JS to load comments from the server is more efficient than page reloads, because it relieves the server of having to serve up all the refreshes.

But CSS is more efficient than JS in changing images because only one image has to be loaded, rather than two.

It's all about making the servers run faster.

THE day before a powerful blast sent his headless body flying out of his Gaza home, senior Hamas leader Nizar Rayan predicted that the Islamist movement would defeat Israel.
"God willing, Hamas will win," Rayan said in a vitriol-laden speech that the movement's television broadcast just after he, his four wives and two of his daughters were killed in the Israeli blitz of the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

He was probably excited about obambi's upcoming inauguration. Too bad POS!

I went to perform the experiment; I could click the greyed-out +, and it scored it up to 24. But when I clicked on the number to see if it showed me as having updinged twice, it didn't, and the number reverted to 23.

Interesting.

Other officials, he said, were sheltering in mosques, which had become weapons storehouses and command centres. He said Hamas was trying to repair destroyed tunnels to evacuate the leadership across the Egyptian border.

Panel wants fuel taxes hiked to fund highways

The financing commission thinks the long-term solution is a mileage-based revenue system. While details have not been worked out, such a system would mean equipping every car and truck with a device that uses global positioning satellites and transponders to record how many miles the vehicle has been driven, the type of roads and time of day. Creation and installation of such a system would take about 10 years.

Here we go with the suggestion of bailing out the media:

Government aid could save U.S. newspapers, spark debate

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Connecticut lawmaker Frank Nicastro sees saving the local newspaper as his duty. But others think he and his colleagues are setting a worrisome precedent for government involvement in the U.S. press.

Nicastro represents Connecticut's 79th assembly district, which includes Bristol, a city of about 61,000 people outside Hartford, the state capital. Its paper, The Bristol Press, may fold within days, along with The Herald in nearby New Britain.

That is because publisher Journal Register, in danger of being crushed under hundreds of millions of dollars of debt, says it cannot afford to keep them open anymore.

Nicastro and fellow legislators want the papers to survive, and petitioned the state government to do something about it. "The media is a vitally important part of America," he said, particularly local papers that cover news ignored by big papers and television and radio stations.

The financial mergers are being completed:

Bank of America, Wells close mergers as banking transforms

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bank of America Corp completed its purchase of Merrill Lynch & Co and Wells Fargo & Co finished buying Wachovia Corp, the latest sea changes in a transformed banking industry facing dire economic times ahead.

The Merrill takeover was completed on Thursday, ending more than 94 years of independence for the Wall Street investment bank and brokerage. The Wachovia merger closed on Wednesday, marking the denouement for a lender that started in 1879 with what it deemed a "very adequate" $100,000 of capital.

I look for there to end up being 3 or 4 "superbanks" when all this is said and done.

This put a smile on my face. Venezuela's economy is melting down.

Venezuela slashes US dollar quota

The Venezuelan government has cut the official number of dollars Venezuelans can spend abroad with their credit cards from $5,000 to $2,500 a year.

The measure aims to preserve foreign currency reserves amid the global economic crisis and Venezuela's own declining oil revenues.

It tightens restrictions in place since a prolonged oil strike in 2003.

Further economic announcements are expected from President Hugo Chavez in the first part of 2009.

The new measure means Venezuelans going abroad can only count on a maximum of $2,500 dollars a year, down from $5,000, on their credit cards.

The cash sum travellers can have also been reduced from $600 to $500 a year.

It also sets new limits for cash withdrawals in dollars from $400 to $250 a month.

If they want more, they will have to buy dollars on the black market which operates at more than twice the fixed exchange rate of 2.15 bolivars to the dollar.

This is an ill conceived attempt by Chavez to try to prop up his failing currency.

Chavez is done, through, over, toast. He designed his economy assuming $100 a barrel oil.

Possibly the worst username ever at Daily Kos was ZyklonB (if you're not familiar with it, Wikipedia has a good explanation). That user visited this fair site on Hitler's birthday (April 20) in 2006. None of its comments got less than 29 trollratings (what you youngun's know as hide ratings).

Of course, back in those days, we Trusted Users had an unlimited number of trollratings each day. Also, back then the world was a slab on the back of a turtle. Ah, good times. Good times.

Anyway, there are also plenty of other "interesting" usernames. This particular diary was inspired by MiketheLiberal's comment in a now-deleted diary (deleted by administration so that the comments are gone as well) that he'd like to have "idiotf**k" be his username. I then searched for "f**k" to see if it was taken, and got all sorts of good usernames.

dufffbeer suggested it for Top Comments. Since that comment is now lost and gone forever, I've decided to go through and diary it.

FWIW, according to this chart over $22 billion is collected annually in federal, state and municipal taxes on cigarettes.
If people are healthier and live longer by not smoking then there will an even greater burden on social security benefits.
So I implore all folks to puff away.

We have spent months testing R12 with IE7.. It works perfect so far..
FF3 needs to really go after the Tech market..That is where the money is..

The problem, of course, with browser plugins (such as Oracle's) is not so much with Mozilla, but rather with the plugin's author; if Oracle decided to give crappy support to FF users, it's on them, not Mozilla. That said, while FF is pretty flexible with its plugin/extension support, there are times when I need to view a page in Internet Exploder, so I usually use IETab (which uses IE's rendering engine to display pages within FF) to do that; every so often, they'll be a page or a needed plugin that doesn't work right under IETab, but they are few and far between.

This put a smile on my face. Venezuela's economy is melting down.

Venezuela slashes US dollar quota

This is an ill conceived attempt by Chavez to try to prop up his failing currency.

Chavez is done, through, over, toast. He designed his economy assuming $100 a barrel oil.

While I feel for the poor Venezuelans who have to live under the rule of that toad, I take solace in predicting that if oil prices stay low as they are and Venezuela's coffers bleed dry under Thugo's socialistic policies (as they are doing now), Thugo's reign (and life) will become short and brutal indeed...

Just ragging you a bit there - have a GO VIDEO VHS/DVD (Samsung Made) to my left on top of a file cabinet. The VHS is there to play older stuff, that DVD is basically my CD Player. Actually miss Compact Cassettes more than VHS as I was a Cassette vs. 8-Track guy from "jump," a late model Sony Dual Deck is in the same stack as the GO Video. As to video tape - I prefered "U-Matic" - Settled for Betamax - and held out from buying a VHS until 1986 - near the bitter end of Beta. My personal camcorders, as opposed to "family" (VHS and VHS-C) units were 8mm (then) and mini-DV (now).

Just hit Immunize and it''l open a window and search for what threats you're unprotected against.

/oh, and before you run each of these programs weekly, make sure you run update first so they have the most up to date virus/malware/spyware information
