Obama: No Follow-Up Questions

Politics • Views: 10,633

Craig Crawford points out that Barack Obama is following in the footsteps of George W. Bush, by refusing to take follow-up questions.

In last night’s press conference, Obama cut off any attempt by reporters to follow up his answers to their questions. If he intends to maintain this Bush policy, reporters must work together and agree to ask the obvious follow-up to the previous question as they take their turns. Otherwise, these press conferences are nothing but one-sided speeches.

Change!

Saul Alinsky tactics at the Florida ‘campaign stop Press Conference thingamajig’ , belittling the critics of his stupid plan to avoid debating the merits. Paints any who dare continue debate as obstructionists for daring to question his slush fund.

Obama does everything to blame the other party for everything and then goes off claiming, “We need bipartisanship.” He doesn’t need the votes to do anything, he doesn’t need or want help. He wants cover for when the public finally wakes out to this disaster in the making.

Rush Limbaugh made a mistake to say “I hope he fails”. No matter how you qualify it—-I hope he fails at socializing health care, etc., the quote will stick.

While there doesn’t seem to be much solid ground for hope that Obama will get it right, or get anywhere close to right, I still hope he doesn’t clusterf*ck us. I’m not going to go down that road of “the worse, the better”. That sort of thinking just leads to things getting worse, and that sort of talk brands a party or a faction as putting factional gain ahead of the national interest. Voters won’t be impressed.

I’m still waiting for the bright side of the this god damn election.

Actually, if you pay close enough attention you will see that the media is getting what they pressed for. Unfortunately for everyone, they didn’t realize what he really was and now that he will not kowtow to their waning power, the disillusionment begins.

The dying media is beginning to realize the mistake of its hubris. Perhaps that is the only bright side to this tragedy.

My head almost exploded when he used Japan’s woes during the 1990’s as a reason that we need his stimulus package, even though Japan’s experience at that time is exactly why we SHOULDN’T be doing this.

White Guilt elected him (yes yell at me, but its true)

I’ve thought about this for a while. Dem crossovers helped get him elected. Does anyone remember all the crossover Dems who voted Republican for McCain? They knew he was one of the weakest candidates and that he would have difficulty with the Repub base so they sabotaged the elections process during the primaries. No doubt that there were much more stronger candidates than the Maverick. For me 2008 and beyond will mark the transition in the American electoral system from fair to blatantly corrupt. From the primary shenanigans to ACORN, to the Black Panthers intimidating voters outside a polling place I feel like I live in a 3rd world country.

re: #96 Lizard by the Bay

Ironically, whether it’s fair or not, if Obama fails as spectacularly as he could, it may make African Americans unelectable for generations.

I disagree. I think that the vast majority of Americans, particularly those that always vote, are smart enough to look beyond the color of a person’s skin. Obama’s failure as President will have nothing to do with his skin color. This time around a lot of people may have voted for him because he is black, but those people do not always vote. As it becomes less of a novelty to have a black man or woman run for office, those that are foolish enough to vote for a person because of skin color will stop bothering to vote.

136 lawhawk  Tue, Feb 10, 2009 9:58:17am

A right wing spin would posit the following:

Bush did shut down follow up questions, particularly with Helen Thomas, who would take every opportunity to ramble on incoherently and waste everyone’s time. He did it at other times as well, but also to spread questions to others in the room and not simply to allow any one reporter to mug for the cameras.

Obama is taking it in a different direction because he doesn’t want to take questions that might make him look bad, which would be any and all of them because Obama’s policies are patently partisan pork and unrelated to getting the economy back on its feet and anyone with a pulse can recognize the long term damage that will be done as a result.

A left winger would do almost the reverse:
Bush is avoiding all questions because he’s a fraud who would be exposed as an idiot who can’t manage to do anything well, except for the conspiracy to take down the Twin Towers, invade Afghanistan for the oil pipeline and murdered millions.

Obama is simply spreading the wealth among the reporters who are graced by His Excellency’s presence. We would not want any one reporter to get too close to Obama because he would spontaneously combust from the sheer joy and pleasure that Obama brings, even when talking about the grim and catastrophic damage done by the Bush Administration on the economy that he will singlehandedly save through splitting atoms with his mind.

/how a spinmeister would approach the same instance.

To me Obama was impressive in two areas last night….the first is that he doesn’t take crap off of reporters. I am old enough to remember Jimmy Carter pressers which were free for alls with the reporters shouting out questions. I was extremely impressed with Reagan when he instituted decorum.

Second, on the question of metrics, Obama answered it clearly and didn’t duck. He said that creation of a half million jobs, increase in housing starts, etc should be the metrics. I can argue that these are the wrong metrics but at least he was specific on what we should hold him accountable for.

I listened to most of the press conference. I was not impressed. Obama was not particularly articulate and he certainly did not answer the questions in a way that provided me with the confidence that he understood what he was talking about. Obama is a socialist. He does not understand the basic underpinnings of capitalism because he, by his own admission, was exposed to and gravitated toward socialist/Marxist theory at an early age and continued in that direction throughout college and beyond. The people that voted for him are going to get exactly what he promised.

I wouldn’t take follow-ups if I were Bush, either. Every reporter made a speech full of propaganda before ever getting to the question and any follow up was always laced with “you don’t expect us to believe the sky is blue, do you?”

Obama might get the same reaction in time, but the initial questions to him are very much less hostile and speech-like than the questions to Bush were.

I doubt the press will turn against him, though. He abused them during the campaign and all they did was say, “Thank you, sir, may I have another.”

Crawford is right, I’m afraid, that Bush shut down follow-up questions. I noticed it at every press conference.

It’s a little amusing to see the media starting to wake up to the fact that they’ve been played.

The problem is that the media has invested so much capital into The One they will never bitch about it or even express buyers remorse amongst themselves.
