"I can't look down on the commercial sponsors of these broadcasts," he told CBS in 1988. "Too often they have very, very important messages to put across. Without advertising in this country, my goodness, we'd still be in this country what Russia mostly still is: a nation of bearded cyclists with b.o."

He did one the other day. Wound up being about a young Woody Allen. Seems that Woody Allen was quite good at sports and that his mother put her foot down when he wanted to become a boxer. Men like Paul Harvey and his radio brethren knew how to control the English Language. Harvey's "Good Day!" and Edward R. Murrow's "This... is London!" (Which later became "This is CBS" and inspired James Earl Jones "This... is CNN."). And Murrow did those ride along reports from bombers over Europe pretty much off the cuff.

This guy gets up in the morning at the boarding house he is staying in, goes downstairs, and has breakfast with the house owner and the rest of the guests. Later he changes into a nicer suit and walks down the street a few blocks, where he is the guest at a celebration. At the end of the day our fellow returns to the boarding house for dinner, pays his bill, thanks the owner/host, and early the next day relocates to better accommodations. All in all, it was a good day for our guy.

re: #79 nyc redneck
pres. bush is a good man.
Indeed. I've scratched my head many a time wondering why he did some of the things he did. But I never doubted that he was a good soul through and through.
As for how he'll be remembered...
Is Mr. Bush worse than John Adams? When a shooting war at sea started between the United States and revolutionary France in 1798, Honest John wrote a letter to George Washington, offering to resign so that George could resume the job. How's that for presidential leadership? Meanwhile, Adams had kept Washington's cabinet officers on the job, although he loathed them. He finally fired them in a fit of hysteria, which made them wonder if he had lost his mind.
Is Mr. Bush worse than Thomas Jefferson in his second term? Rather than build a decent navy to deal with the British -- who had a habit of boarding American ships on the high seas and forcing kidnapped sailors into semislavery -- Jefferson declared an embargo on all trade with England and the rest of Europe. The American economy came to a horrific standstill; smuggling became New England's chief industry. Someone described the embargo as "cutting a man's throat to cure a nosebleed." Nonplussed, Jefferson quit, telling only James Madison, his secretary of state, who was de facto acting president for the last year of Tom's term.

A riddle from Paul Harvey...
Paul Harvey Writes:We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better.
I'd really like for them to know about hand me down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meat loaf sandwiches. I really would.I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated.
I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car.
And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your old dog put to sleep.
I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in.
I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother/sister. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him.
When you want to see a movie and your little brother/sister wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him/her.
I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your friends and that you live in a town where you can do it safely. On rainy days when you have to catch a ride, I hope you don't ask your driver to drop you two blocks away so you won't be seen riding with someone as uncool as your Mom.
If you want a slingshot, I hope your Dad teaches you how to make one instead of buying one.
I hope you learn to dig in the dirt and read books. When you learn to use computers, I hope you also learn to add and subtract in your head.
I hope you get teased by your friends when you have your first crush on a boygirl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what ivory soap tastes like.
May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on a stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flagpole.
I don't care if you try a beer once, but I hope you don't like it.. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend.
I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your Grandma/Grandpa and go fishing with your Uncle.
May you feel sorrow at a funeral and joy during the holidays.
I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through your neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Hannukah/Christmas time when you give her a plaster mold of your hand.
These things I wish for you - tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness. To me, it's the only way to appreciate life.
Written with a pen. Sealed with a kiss. I'm here for you. And if I die before you do, I'll go to heaven and wait for you.
Send this to all of your friends. We secure our friends, not by accepting favors, but by doing them.
Paul Harvey RIDDLE:
When asked this riddle, 80% of kindergarten kids got the answer, compared to 17% of Stanford University seniors.
What is greater than God, More evil than the devil, The poor have it, The rich need it, And if you eat it, you'll die?"

The poor have it. Nothing

And that is the rest of the story

No, no one was laid off at lunch.

HATE preacher Anjem Choudary marched in Anjem Choudarytoday. Sharia law for UK?
More background here: HATE PREACHER GETS OK TO RUN SHARIA LAW DEMO
Publicity for the march, in the East End, carries 41-year-old Choudary’s personal mobile number and says the aim of the campaign is to “emulate the Prophet and his companions, by calling for Islam and speaking out against the oppression of man-made law”.
It says that Britain is full of “disbelievers” who are involved in prostitution, gambling, alcoholism and worshipping other gods.
The publicity says women are welcome to join the march but they must walk at the back of the procession as “strict segregation will be enforced”.
The demo comes 18 months after three of Choudary’s supporters were jailed for soliciting murder in a London protest against cartoons of the prophet Mohammed published in Denmark.
That was when some demonstrators chanted “Bomb the UK” and “Europe, you will pay with your blood”. Organiser Choudary was fined.
Today’s march won permission after a council withdrew funding for a St George’s Day parade in the Midlands – on the grounds that it was “racist”.

When I worked at an ad agency several years ago, one of our clients sponsored part or some of Paul Harvey's broadcasts. I tried my best to write commercials that would sound like Mr. Harvey. Couldn't do it. We ended up just sending him talking points or product highlights that he put into his own words. He conveyed the message more effectively than anything that could have been written for him. He made it REAL.

Wife's Night Out.......
The other night I was invited out for a night with the 'girls.' I told my husband that I would be home by midnight, 'I promise!' Well, the hours passed and the margaritas went down way too easily. Around 3 a.m., a bit loaded, I headed for home.
Just as I got in the door, the cuckoo clock in the hallway started up and cuckooed 3 times. Quickly, realizing my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another 9 times.
I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him. (Even when totally smashed... 3 cuckoos plus 9 cuckoos totals 12 cuckoos =MIDNIGHT!)
The next morning my husband asked me what time I got in, I told him 'MIDNIGHT'... he didn't seem pissed off in the least. Whew, I got away with that one!
Then he said 'We need a new cuckoo clock.'
When I asked him why, he said, 'Well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said 'oh shit.' Cuckooed 4 more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and farted.'

Yup. Unfortunately groups like the BNP have taken up St. George as their own. It's very sad on many different levels.
Most neo fascists imagine they are related to Royals and fancy "blood and soil" as part of that, and at least a third or more can be traced back to monarchists. The flag of St. George is used by the Welsh/English nativists and football fans because it precedes the joining of England and Scotland, at which point a new flag was created at the joining of the Crowns.

Paul Harvey made a life's work for what he believed in. We were blessed with a man who unselfishishly gave us his insight from a perspective that crossed the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and on into our present age. Most people would have retired 20 years previous, but not Paul Harvey. He had a mission.

Rush ended with a good line. Don't worry about what people think, worry about how they vote and then how they live, but that really doesn't matter once they close their door.
Now, if the Republicans could get people to believe that last part, they might have a chance.

Paul Harvey will always be a fond memory for me. In my youth we lived in the sticks: TV news was boring and staid, Paul Harvey you could count on, and laugh with. In the summer we gathered at my grandparents during planting, baling and harvest seasons: Paul Harvey was a staple at breakfast, and woe unto the noisy kid that interrupted.
The sound of his voice still conjures up the images of those kitchens and breakfasts... many of the faces around those tables are lost to all but memory now. Wherever they are, I'm sure they're glad to have Paul with them now. Godspeed, Mr. Harvey. Thanks for the "Goooooood DAY!"

Hi (((mikeymom))) they aren't working as well as they first did, I'm afraid. And you DO NOT want any of these things - trust me on this.
But I do have a tip for you: take a regular plastic straw, cut it the approximate length of a cigarette, clog up like 90% of one end or just bend it shut, and then put the other end in your mouth and "take a drag" - if you're already using a nicotine replacement therapy, that straw thing might work. Cause what I always missed in all the times I tried to quit, was the sensation you get in your lungs when you drag or suck in the smoke. I missed that far more than the nicotine, actually.

Ok tracked down the fake "Obama Sold us to ChinaH! OMG!" eminent domain article.
It started with this Bloomberg story (the only real source they have) which was actually discussed here in a couple of threads. Notice that the Chinese are just asking for assurance, and immediately after that Obama called a conference and announced fiscal restraint policies and deficit reduction steps would follow later in the year (can you say "TAXES"?)
From that, Nutball radio host Hal Turner quoted unamed sources. The usual kookspiracy blogs are now floating it nationwide. To give you an idea of the type of people who listen to Hal Turner, this has been in his comments for 2 days now:
A silver lining...
GIVE THE CHINKS ALL THE JEWS AND SIN-O-GOGUES.
Each jew should be good for an average working life of 50 years at hard labor. In Chinese Yuans that would amount to about $39.20, ergo, we'd have to give them ALL our stinkin Kikes. Absolutely worth it. yazoo.
I wonder if Pam's checked into the real source this is coming from since she's running it too?

re: #150 Thanos
The flag of St. George is used by the Welsh/English nativists and football fans because it precedes the joining of England and Scotland, at which point a new flag was created at the joining of the Crowns.
What we know as the Union Jack, was created in 1707, by merging the flag of St. George with the flag of St. Andrew, the symbol of Scotland.
Many Scots refused to agree with the Act of Union, considering the Hanoverian German Protestant monarchs to be foreign usurpers, which led to the last Jacobite rebellion of 1745, and the attempt to place Bonnie Prince Charlie on the throne. The Jacobites were defeated at the Battle of Culloden, and the destruction of the clan system and the Highland Clearances followed, with many Scots going into exile in Canada and the Colonies, which had an influence on our Revolutionary War.
Which is why the Scottish footie fans wave the flag of St. Andrew.

My Brother-in-law sent me this one:
It was the first day of school and a new Indian student named Chandrasekhar Subramanian entered the fourth grade.
The teacher said, "Let's begin by reviewing some American History. Who said 'Give me Liberty or give me Death'?"
She saw a sea of blank faces, except for Chandrasekhar, who had his hand up: 'Patrick Henry, 1775' he said.
'Very good!'
Who said 'Government of the People, by the People, for the People, shall not perish from the Earth?'
Again, no response except from Chandrasekhar. 'Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg - 1863'
The teacher snapped at the class, 'Class, you should be ashamed. Chandrasekhar, who is new to our country, knows more about its history than you do.'
She heard a loud whisper: 'Screw the Indians,'
'Who said that?' she demanded.
Chandrasekhar put his hand up.
'General Custer, 1862.'
At that point, a student in the back said, 'I'm gonna puke.'
The teacher glares around and asks, 'Alright, now who said that?'
Again, Chandrasekhar says, 'George Bush to the Japanese Prime Minister, 1991.'
Now furious, another student yells, 'Oh yeah? Suck this!'
Chandrasekhar jumps out of his chair waving his hand and shouts to the teacher, 'Bill Clinton, to Monica Lewinsky, 1997!'
Now with almost mob hysteria someone said, 'You little shithead. If you say anything else, I'll kill you.'
Chandrasekhar frantically yells at the top of his voice, ' Michael Jackson to the child witnesses testifying against him, 2004.'
The teacher fainted.
And as the class gathered around the teacher on the floor, someone said, 'Oh shit, now we're screwed!'
And Chandrasekhar said quietly, 'I think it was the American people, November 4th, 2008".

I rear-ended the car in front of me. I admit that. It was my fault.
So, we both pull over to the side of the road, and slowly the driver of the car I hit gets out of his car. . . and you know how you just get so stressed...and life...sometimes, life seems like...um, suddenly funny?
Well, the driver of the car I hit is a DWARF! He gets out of his car and I get out of my car.
He is frowning and scowling and he storms over to me. Right up close at me he looks up in my face and says, "I AM NOT HAPPY!"
And I don't know what possessed me, officer, but I look down at him and I said, "Well, if you're not Happy -- which one are you?"
.....and that's when the fight started.

I always loved Paul Harey's Christmas story, the one about the man and the birds: "THE MAN AND THE BIRDS"
Unable to trace its proper parentage, I have designated this as my Christmas Story of the Man and the Birds. You know, THE Christmas Story, the God born a man in a manger and all that escapes some moderns, mostly, I think, because they seek complex answers to their questions and this one is so utterly simple. So for the cynics and the skeptics and the unconvinced I submit a modern parable.
Now the man to whom I'm going to introduce you was not a scrooge, he was a kind, decent, mostly good man. Generous to his family, upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn't believe all that incarnation stuff which the churches proclaim at Christmas Time. It just didn't make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. He just couldn't swallow the Jesus Story, about God coming to Earth as a man. "I'm truly sorry to distress you," he told his wife, "but I'm not going with you to church this Christmas Eve." He said he'd feel like a hypocrite. That he'd much rather just stay at home, but that he would wait up for them. And so he stayed and they went to the midnight service.
Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier and then went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper. Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound. Then another, and then another. Sort of a thump or a thud. At first he thought someone must be throwing snowballs against his living room window. But when he went to the front door to investigate he found a flock of birds huddled miserably in the snow. They'd been caught in the storm and, in a desperate search for shelter, had tried to fly through his large landscape window.
Well, he couldn't let the poor creatures lie there and freeze, so he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter, if he could direct the birds to it. Quickly he put on a coat, galoshes, tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light, but the birds did not come in. He figured food would entice them in. So he hurried back to the house, fetched bread crumbs, sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail to the yellow-lighted wide open doorway of the stable. But to his dismay, the birds ignored the bread crumbs, and continued to flap around helplessly in the snow. He tried catching them. He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around them waving his arms. Instead, they scattered in every direction, except into the warm, lighted barn.
And then, he realized, that they were afraid of him. To them, he reasoned, I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could think of some way to let them know that they can trust me. That I am not trying to hurt them, but to help them. But how? Because any move he made tended to frighten them, confuse them. They just would not follow. They would not be led or shooed because they feared him. "If only I could be a bird," he thought to himself, "and mingle with them and speak their language. Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to safe, warm ...to the safe warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see, and hear and understand."
At that moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind. And he stood there listening to the bells - Adeste Fidelis - listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas. And he sank to his knees in the snow.

Four Worms and a lesson to be learned:
A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.
Four worms were placed into four separate jars.
The first worm was put into a container of alcohol. The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke. The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup. The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:
The first worm in alcohol -Dead.
The second worm in cigarette smoke - Dead
Third worm in chocolate syrup -Dead
Fourth worm in good clean soil -Alive.
So the Minister asked the congregation -What did you learn from this demonstration?
Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said,
'As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!'
That pretty much ended the service!

Yes. And in the Carolinas as well. Most of the people who settled the Carolina backcountry were Scots from Ulster. Flora McDonald, who had helped Bonnie Prince Charlie flee the Highlands after the '45, lived for a time in North Carolina, although oddly enough she supported the Loyalist side in the Revolution and returned to Britain in 1779. The first battle of the Revolution in North Carolina, the Battle of Moore's Creek bridge near Wilmington in Feb. 1776, was fought almost exclusively by Scots, both on the Revolutionary and Loyalist sides.

Hi Thanos - who the hell is Hal Turner?
Just from a skim of his blog he appears to be a white supremacist neo-nazi who floats a lot of conspiracy theories. He does a radio show as well, but not sure if that's just podcast or what. Probably runs on stormfront just judging from the comments on his blog.
Wikipedia confirms:
Harold Charles "Hal" Turner is an American white nationalist and white supremacist from North Bergen, New Jersey. He ran his program, The Hal Turner Show, as a webcast from his home once a week, and depended on donations from his listeners. He quit the show in July 2008. In August his website also closed down, though he retains a blog.
Turner has often made news for his extreme right-wing views. He promotes antisemitism (including the rounding up and killing of Jews)[1] and opposes the existence of the state of Israel.[2] He also denies the Holocaust.[3] In 2005, Turner organized what he billed as a "rally against violence" after a white student was beaten by a black student at a high school. In 2006, he got into a fight with Jaime Vazquez, a former Jersey City deputy mayor, after Vazquez called him a racist coward. Turner has made numerous threats against political figures on his website and in other forums.
Someone should tell Pam that's she's running agitprop for Nazis (again)
But I don't think she really cares if it gets her hits

This guy comes home from work one day to find his dog with the neighbor's pet rabbit in his mouth. The rabbit is very dead and the guy panics.
He thinks the neighbors are going to hate him forever, so he takes the dirty, chewed-up rabbit into the house, gives it a bath, blow-dries its fur, and puts the rabbit back into the cage at the neighbor's house, hoping that they will think it died of natural causes.
A few days later, the neighbor is outside and asks the guy, "Did you hear that Fluffy died?"
The guy stumbles around and says, "Um.. no.. um.. what happened?"
The neighbor replies, "We just found him dead in his cage one day, but the weird thing is that the day after we buried him we went outside and someone had dug him up, gave him a bath and put him back into the cage. There must be some real sick people out there!"

And 5-7 inches of snow is a lot of snow for most places and down here it might as well be a blizzard - the government and, more importantly Duke Power have no clue as to what to do. Identifying himself as "Hal from North Bergen", Turner became notable in American conservative circles as a frequent caller to WABC radio talk shows hosted by Bob Grant and Sean Hannity.[4] Turner parlayed this fame into a role as the northern New Jersey coordinator for Patrick J. Buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign. He went on to serve as campaign manager for Libertarian Party candidate Murray Sabrin in New Jersey in the 1990s, including a 1997 gubernatorial campaign.[5]

What happens when a fly falls into a coffee cup?
An Italian - will throw away the cup and walk away in a fit of rage.
A Frenchman - will take out the fly, and drink the coffee.
A Chinaman - will eat the fly and throw away the coffee.
A Russian - will drink the coffee with the fly, since it was extra with no

An Israeli - will sell the coffee to the Frenchman, the fly to the Chinese, buy himself a new cup of coffee and use the extra money to invent a device that prevents flies from falling into coffee.
The Palestinian - will blame the Israeli for the fly falling in his coffee, protest the act of aggression to the UN, take a loan from the European Union to buy a new cup of coffee, use the money to purchase explosives and then blow up the coffee house where the Italian, the Frenchman, the Chinese, and the Russian are all trying to explain to the Israeli that he should give his cup of coffee to the Palestinian.

What's this movie Newt keeps talking about (about Reagan). Is it linked somewhere?
I believe it's called "In The Face of Evil, Reagan's War in Word and Deed."
There are excerpts from it on youtube IIRC.

The only cow in a small Kentucky town stopped giving milk. The people did some research and found that they could buy a cow just across the state line in Illinois for $200.
They brought the cow from Illinois and the cow was wonderful. It produced lots of milk all of the time, and the people were very happy.
They decided to acquire a bull to mate with the cow to produce more cows like it. They would never have to worry about their milk supply again.
They bought the bull and put it in the pasture with their beloved cow. However, whenever the bull tried to mount the cow, the cow would move away. No matter what approach the bull tried, the cow would move away from the bull and he could not succeed in his quest. The people were very upset and decided to ask the Vet, who was very wise, what to do.
They told the Vet what was happening. "Whenever the bull tries to mount our cow, she moves away. If he approaches from the back, she moves forward. When he approaches her from the front, she backs off. An attempt from the side, she walks away to the other side."
The Vet thought about this for a minute and asked, "Did you by chance, buy this cow in Illinois?"
The people were dumbfounded, since no one had ever mentioned where they bought the cow. "You are truly a wise Vet," they said. "How did you know we got the cow in Illinois?"
The Vet replied with a distant look in his eye, "My wife is from Illinois."

'Couldn't care less' about meeting Obama: Chavez
President Hugo Chavez said Friday he was totally indifferent about meeting US President Barack Obama at the April 17-19 Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago.
"The reason I'm attending the summit is not that Obama's there. I couldn't care less if he is there or not, if we see each other or not," Chavez told reporters at a public event in Caracas.
/gee Hugo, he really wants to meet you

Heh. Chavez needs America to be the big, bad Yankee Imperialist bully. If his citizens subjects don't see us like that, he's lost his main rallying point.

I remember listening to Paul Harvey every day at noon with my mom. She totally loved his show. Once he did a report about somebody who was 'shot in the fracas' and had listeners writing and calling in about which part of the anatomy the 'fracas' was. It was a running joke for weeks! I will miss him and his great radio voice. Say hi to Angel for us all, Paul.

Paul Harvey is one of the few famous people I have never heard anything bad, scandalous or wrong about.
May Paul rest in a place of peace, a place of rest, a place of verdure where there is neither sickness nor sighing but life everlasting.

His stories were always interesting ... trying to find out who he was talking about before the end. I grew up listening to Mr. Harvey, and I'll miss hearing him.

I never cared for Paul Harveys "pregnant pauses". Over the years the pauses became shorter.
It ticked me off so much that I would change stations as soon as I heard his voice.

Good day... Mr Harvey he will be missed. His show will live on as his son who often fills in for Paul, will likely continue the show.

Sure, he sounded way too folksy and let's be honest, much of the news he delivered and most of the bits were really corny.
Never once did I turn the dial when I heard his voice.
RIP Mr. Harvey.
