Totten: Obama’s Diplomacy Needs a Reset Button

Politics • Views: 2,851

Michael J. Totten on President Obama’s shockingly inept and graceless handling of the visit of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown: The U.S. Needs a Reset Button for Britain.

While President Barack Obama tries to improve U.S. relations with rogue states like Syria and Iran, he might want to ensure ties with our closest ally aren’t strained in the meantime. Damascus and Tehran will remain hostile as long as they’re ruled by Bashar Assad and Ayatollah Khamenei, but Britain has long been a reliable friend no matter who is in charge. President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair forged a strong personal friendship despite their ideological differences, yet President Obama is off to an embarrassing start with his Downing Street counterpart.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown felt half snubbed on his visit to the U.S. a few days ago when he didn’t receive the customary press conference and dinner. According to London’s Daily Telegraph, the Obama administration says the president was too tired.

Presidents and prime ministers from all countries are exhausted most of the time. An excuse like that wouldn’t wash if President Manny Mori of Micronesia were blown off. I doubt very much that Prime Minister Brown was slighted on purpose, but an unnamed State Department official quoted in the Telegraph wants the British to believe the cool welcome is all they should have expected.

“There’s nothing special about Britain,” he reportedly said. “You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment.”

So - no need to be ashamed!

How come nobody's screaming about how "stupid" Obama is, the way they just hunted for any little slip Bush made? The worst Bush did was speak badly, not insult our allies. And the Russians, while they're at it.

Not to mention that Obama has to stop and ask his advisors to tell him what his own executive decision means...total puppet. Teleprompter puppet. They would have crucified President Bush for less...

Totten:
.....I’m sure President Obama is tired. How could he not be? The job is exhausting. Just look at the “before” and “after” photos of recent American presidents. There’s no fault or foul there, but we shouldn’t hear about it. We shouldn’t read about it, especially not during the first 100 days. This diplomatic faux pas reflects badly on all of us, and it’s a bit disconcerting. If President Obama is too tired to properly meet with the British prime minister during a time of relative peace, what should we expect if he meets with, say, the Russian president during war time?

It may however, may not be Russia....but China...

Chinese Ships Harassed Unarmed Navy Craft in International Waters

The Pentagon charged that FIVE Chinese ships harassed an unarmed U.S. Navy craft in international waters as the Obama administration protested the action to the Chinese government Monday.

You know, thinking about the naivete of the Obama administration, it reminds me of a story I head back in the day.

A congresswoman (to be left unnamed) was touring one of our FBM (missile submarines). She pulled aside the Chief Yeoman to ask a question:

"I've heard that - for the morale of the crew - one of the missiles doesn't have a live warhead on it. Kind of like the firing squad idea, where one man's rifle has blanks. Can you confirm that for me?"

The yeoman said, "Well, it's partially true. All but one are loaded with live warheads. One is loaded with candy."

The congresswoman said, "Candy? I've never heard that. What for?"

The yeoman said, "Well, if the balloon goes up, we'll launch that one first. When it reaches the target city, the warhead will burst and the candy will be scattered all over the streets"

"When the little children come out to get the candy, the rest of the missiles hit."

She freaked out.

(May just be an old sailor's tale, but somehow I think folks in this administration would believe it too.)

173 Big Steve  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 9:37:28am

What strikes me about all of this is the comment from the White House that Obama has been "surprised by the amount of work that comes across his desk." This is a perfect example of the fact that the man has never had an executive position in his life. When I have had business level jobs with executive authority, the amount of things people want you do to, meetings to be at, things to approve.....would stagger a rhinoceros. I can imagine the President's workload is orders of magnitude more. If Obama had even one fingernail of executive experiences as a business leader, governor, or even mayor he would have known this.

Was clinton's gaffe reported by the drive-bys here?

Interesting it looks like it didn't get much coverage. CNN has it.

Made it to page A7 of the NYT.

Lost in Translation: A U.S. Gift to Russia
Recognizing that the error threatened to overshadow the substance of the meeting, the State Department dispatched several senior officials to brief reporters traveling with Mrs. Clinton.

Interesting, a gaffe by America's top DIPLOMAT is kind of shrugged off by the NYT.

Beware the Strongly Worded Letter of Doom!

The parallels between this, and the Chinese forcing down our surveillance plane in 2001 are obvious. "Let's push the new guy and see what happens." Not Bush's finest hour, either.

Excellent point. The 2001 incident took place on April 1 - and clearly was a test of the new President. Given The One's peformance thusfar in his Presidency, it should not be a surprise that this test of wills is taking place - or that others are also taking place / will take place. Point in example is the rapid increase in sabre rattling from DRPK over their missile test. First they threaten Korean Air civilian airliners, then they expand to include threats of war against the US / South Korea if the missile test is interferred with.

What many of the left fail to understand and accept is that other nations will be acting on their own agenda's and interests entirely independent of the US agenda and interests. They will, if many of these cases, want to guage the depth and force of any US response if their interests run against those of the US - and be emboldened if the US reacts weakly. The left seems to think that no other nation has an agenda or interest except that in response to US actions and interests.

Their naive outlook creates the crisis - and unfortunately, with this Alinsky trained crew in leadership - they will capitalize on the crisis to not resolve the crisis, but enact their domestic agenda.

The British aren't our friends.
They're our FAMILY.
And as such we can only hope they'll be understanding relatives as we go through one of our stupid spasms in our sometimes screwed up exercise of democracy.
Voters make mistakes. Sometimes hideous ones.
Remember these are the people who kicked Winston Churchill to the curb and ignored him even as the Soviets were consolidating their power.
After the great relations we enjoyed with the UK under Reagan, Bush Sr., Bush Jr., and even Clinton, let's just hope they understand that we're bound to have a Carter every now and then. Idiots do get elected sometimes.
The only real danger is if we have to ask them for some big honkin' favor between now and when the electorate come to their senses.
Then Oprabamah's foreign policy ineptitude could become a serious problem, even vis a vis a country that's barely "foreign" at all.

And folks, there is absolutely no way the Obamatons can spin this as Bush's fault. Obama and his people made this new mess all on their own. There's a reason that the US and Brits have a special relationship, going back decades. We have a shared lineage, history, culture, and Obama now wants to lump the UK in with the likes of Syria, Iran, and Taliban?

Who's engaging in unilateralist cowboy diplomacy? Oh yeah, that phrase only comes when you're talking about Bush engaging in multilateral diplomacy, putting together coalitions of the willing, and defeating terrorist-sponsoring regimes. Obama is systematically dismantling existing relationships to forward an agenda that runs counter to history predating Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Carter, Ford, Nixon, LBJ, JFK, Eisenhower, Truman, and FDR (I could go on, but you get the point)...

It's only the closest relationship the US has in the international community, a shared background in terms of law, history, culture and traditions. That, and the fact that we've fought two world wars together in the last century (and cooperated in innumerable other conflicts). I seriously hope that no American official ever said anything of the kind-- it would not only be unpardonably rude, it would be reflective of even more ingorance and stupidity than one expects from political hacks at State.

...Or it's like some children's book in which a kid decides he should be the daddy and go to an important office and be big and important, then somehow magically it happens and he discovers it's a little tougher than he thought.
So when does Mr. Roarke come and rescue this stupid fantasist from the consequences of getting in over his head? Usually that doesn't happen until after the idiot has learned his lesson and we've got a long painful road before that happens.
4 years is an awfully long episode of "Fantasy Island."

slowly, but surely, SUBASE New London [Groton] is becoming irrelevant. Even with all the money spent to upgrade the Base, BRAC will find a way to close it, and with the fall of that domino, Electric Boat will fall right afterward, and the Defense industry in South Eastern Connecticut will be dead, and gone.

I sure hope not, and they have put a fair amount of money on the base also. Fantastic new Dental Facility.

It's only the closest relationship the US has in the international community, a shared background in terms of law, history, culture and traditions. That, and the fact that we've fought two world wars together in the last century (and cooperated in innumerable other conflicts). I seriously hope that no American official ever said anything of the kind-- it would not only be unpardonably rude, it would be reflective of even more ingorance and stupidity than one expects from political hacks at State.

re: #100 Dianna

I'm just ready to scream.

I recognize that many new administrations have some stumbles, but this is ridiculous.

How come nobody's screaming about how "stupid" Obama is, the way they just hunted for any little slip Bush made? The worst Bush did was speak badly, not insult our allies. And the Russians, while they're at it.

Many people are screaming it but the MSM is still in Obama 'honeymoon' euphoria. Yet, a small crack was seen today in the MSM as a news story over the MSM Internet providers which began to question the necessity for teleprompters at every appearance and speak by the One.

Just maybe there was no teleprompter available for the PM of England's visit recently...if so, maybe Obama was too tired to read what others had teleprompted or just possibly he is an idiot. Obama makes GW look like a Rhodes scholar and an active Mensa member.

It will only get worse for America under the reign of Obama. To date he has done nothing right while actively doing harm and damage to this nation, it's tax-paying citizens and now our closest ally.

289 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 10:10:05am

What could possibly go wrong?

Everything!

Our list that we know so far:

Appeasement of our enemies as they relentlessly arm themselves
Tossing away allies when we need them most
Weak economic leadership potentially leading to civil unrest
Cutting the defense budget by 50%
Feckless diplomacy
Appointing certified shithead Chas Freeman to vet intelligence to the President

It is no coincidence that Iran and North Korea are testing long range rockets, Pakistan is caving to the Islamazoids and Russia looks ready to conquer Georgia, Ukraine and the Baltic states.

So what does the US do? Crawl to the UN and announce we wil try to help on the Durban II process and join the UN Human Rights Council (that abortion of a failure that still only has Israel as its only action item). Meanwhile Iran sprints to the finish line (and believe me if they they get the bomb, the west is finished) for their nuclear bomb.

Those are just some of the foreign policy catastrophes, gross derelictions of duty that may yet lead tens of thousands and, potentially, tens of millions of deaths, American deaths.

Meanwhile, trillions of wealth is being destroyed each month and Teleprompter Man (he is truly nothing without his canned words) just loads up more pork to the Chicago Political Stockyards without the faintest hope of even being able to pay for it all or even much of an idea of where the money is really going. He really has no clue what he is doing. Saul Alinsky didn't write much about fixing systems, his specialty was breaking them. poor Barry read the wrong books and is taking his Statecraft 101 from the University of Hard Knocks at Seatofyourpants. Not what we need right now.

If John Sydney McCain were president, this would not be happening. It is an open question whether this White House is capable of doing anything other than lies, profligate spending and drawing up enemies lists. We read about FABULOUS parties in the East Room, all the best people are invited but they may be able to plan whether to sprinkle organic cilantro over the pate fois gras but they cannot seem to be troubled to come up with a gift for the premier of the UK better than a collection of 24 DVDs!

These people are incompetent bozos; they are the best and the brightest of the Democtatic world and have made a conclusive business case for never letting them near the halls of power again for 100 years. At the rate things are going, year from now 30% of the population will be unemployed, 40% of all mortgages will be in default and the collective value of Manhattan will have returned to its pre-modern glory of $24 dollars; but no one will have 30 cents, so good luck buying.

Our postmodern geniuses see crisis as an opportunity to undertake greater risk. Is this wise? Who cares? We won! A trillion here or there is no problem, the money will come from somewhere. This is fantasy without any connection to reality. It is our Democrats in power.

The lesson of this disaster can be summed in a single word: unaccountability. We have a government that no longer serves us but serves itself. Washington is on complete breach of the social contract that built this country. The problem is embodied in both Chris Dodd and Mitch McConnell, they represent power for themselves but not for us.

Rise. Time has come to take back our country. We need to unseat every single person in Congress with sober people who will remember who elected them and what a Constitutional Republic is supposed to be. Every State Constitution leaves to the people the power to recall its representatives? Go to your State offices and file recall petitions now.

They all need to go and they need to go now.

Let's push the reset button on Washington. Now!

It's a shame you didn't see Britain when it had the floy-floy.

Let's give Obama a break though. It's tough being President. The poor guy has never had to work so hard in his life. It takes an enormous amount of energy to lie constantly. Remember, when last he met Brown, he told him how he was gonna use all that presidential time "thinkin". Now, he has no time for thinking (explains a lot, doesn't it?)

He's used to community organizin, remember? Up at 10, lunch at 11, back at 2, quittin time at 4. AND FOR THE SAME MONEY. He's workin for a livin now. And then at night, he's gotta take care of the woman, too.

“There’s nothing special about Britain,” he reportedly said. “You’re just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn’t expect special treatment.”

Where to begin? In fact, there is a lot about Britain that's special. You treat your friends better than you treat your random draw from the hat, unless you're a judge---unless you're a judge from Chicago.

Now, the U.S. is getting its ever-so-predictable shark bump from China. In a replay of the incident at the beginning of Bush's first term, the Chinese are arranging an "accident", this time on the high seas instead of in the air. If this goes on, a U.S. naval vessel will be sunk, lives will be lost, and the U.S. will be instructed to apologize in order to gain the release of the survivors.

The U.S. is not in that good a position to stand up to this stuff, because this time around, we owe so much money to China. The Chinese, for their part, aren't in that good a position to push their luck, because the value of that debt depends on continued good trade relations. If China-U.S. trade dries up, the depression now in progress becomes a major depression instead of a garden-variety 2-5 year downturn. Let's hope the president isn't too exhausted by his various campaign events to soberly think about all this and find a path that steers clear of capitulation to Chinese demands that we treat everything west of Hawaii as Chinese territorial waters, without throwing a fit and putting Chinese officials in a position where they must either kick off a trade war (or a shooting war), or lose face big time.

China bears some responsibility here too, and the consequences of miscalculation could be painful all around.

Calling all grownups, you're needed in aisle (South China Sea.)

Yeah, it could be any of those 190 other countries providing thousands of troops fighting alongside in Iraq and Afghanistan. Those Black Watch soldiers who deployed to Fallujah to relieve the USMC could have come from any of those 190 countries.

The desk in the Oval Office, used by almost every President for over a century; the Magna Carta hanging in the Rotunda with the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights - yep, those could have come from any of those 190 countries.

Fighting alongside, from the Nazis on the beaches of Normandy to the North Koreans, from the Japanese in Asian jungles to Soviet troops in Afghanistan, breaking codes and gathering intelligence from Enigma and Japanese ciphers to Echelon and Intellink-C - perhaps a few of those 190 countries could have done all those, too.

They didn't. One country did.

The saving grace here, though, is how unpopular Brown is at home - unelected, having canceled the expected election last summer and ballooned the national debt at an unprecedented rate. The snub is still a mistake, but nothing like as damaging as it would have been to snub a leader who actually had public support.

I believe the "snub" was Obama's off-handed way of reminding the British that they were instrumental in the flourishment of slavery in the young union way back when. Now that 70% of those who voted for him were white, he needs someone else other than his fellow Americans to blame. Soon he'll be asking for reparations from Great Britain.

Either that or Obama is just an ingenious dope.

338 under  Mon, Mar 9, 2009 4:48:18pm

I'm not so sure that it was a simple mistake. No matter how inept Obama might be in matters international, absolutely no one would ignorantly give a British head of state a stack of CDs of American movies. Either Obama is stupid beyond all hope, or he did it knowingly. I can think of several possible reasons why, and all of them worry me. Then again, maybe it's just stupidity. Having lived outside the United States for 20 years, it always amazes me how ignorant the Democrats who preach multi-culturalism are of cultures outside their own.

Do as I say. . .not as I do saith the Liberals. . .

Dam the diplomacy reset, President Mau-Mau needs a reset button.

I am not ashamed to be an American. However, I would like to apologize to Great Britain for the boorish behavior of our President. The press may not cover it here, but we know, and we expected better of him too.

Great posts! My own thoughts have been expressed eloquently, but I would like to add my personal apology to the British people for the poor behavior of our president.

Be ashamed of your Pres. Be proud of America.

I'm proud of about 47.2% of America....

Seriously, though, weren't they taking polls last fall where 99% of Britain was pro-Obama? Aren't they just supposed to love him because he "is"?

A lot of us here knew this sort of thing was bound to happen. Diplomacy with Britain just doesn't really further the radical reshaping of America agenda, so it's bound to be tossed out the window.

But it did not help matters when all the Obama News Networks were constantly running stories on how much all of Europe loved Obama, England included. Now he's in and they're saying, "Goodness, he's rude!" Well, I just have one thing to say to that:

"Duh."

SEND GORDON BROWN AN APOLOGY
I sent the below letter to the Republican National Committee and my Republican senator. I suggest you all do the same. It didn't do me any good to send it to my senator, Arlen Specter, since he is now what I call a rupublicrat, but please send the idea to your Federal officials and whoever you think will help spread the word.

I think it was disgraceful of Obama to do what he did to Prime Minister Brown. Maybe he thinks Prime Minister Brown was one reason the Iraq war ended sooner than Obama wanted. I know Obama wanted to get the credit for ending the war. Now he can't.

I think the Republican members of Congress should get together to give Prime Minister Brown and his sons decent gifts. They should be sent with an apology. I suggest asking President Bush what would be appropriate. We can't allow Obama to get away with this!

The One is a very boorish and vengeful dolt. Remember how he flipped the bird by pretending to rub his nose with his middle finger. He's surrounded by other boorish and vengeful dolts, like Gibbs, Rahmbo, Clinton, and just about everyone he's appointed to a cabinet post.

He has little or no knowledge of history - and I'm sure he doesn't care. (I for one, believe that he never really attended classes at either Columbia or Harvard Law. His mentality and intellectual capabilities are even lower than the lowest percentile at Occidental. He's all hype. He's a "product".) He's in the post to do the damage and have a wild ride doing it at the taxpayers' expense - hence, all the parties and excessive expenditures on food, wine, swing sets, redecorating, visiting performers, etc. I wouldn't put it past him and his partner in crime, Lady MacBeth (another boorish and vengeful dolt), to trash the White House. Who's going to call this pop star out when his approval rating is 60%? (Maybe when the halo starts to show the rust - and the fawning media takes notice.)

I really hope that there will be enough reason to impeach this vile man before he does more irreparable damage to the country.

re: #329 tradewind

There's no better proof that the supposedly post racial Obama can't get past the race thing: Michelle reportedly loathes the Brits for their history in the slave trade, and refuses to play nice with them. How childish and grudge-holding can you be? As if Gordon Brown had funded a slave ship.......

Yep. And the Brits outlawed slavery long before the Americans did.

In addition, The One's grandfather was a Mau Mau in Kenya - a member of one of the most vicious, bloodthirsty terror gangs in Africa.

No wonder the O's appreciate the Saudis.

This is blogworthy why? I mean really--if this were reported on some blog like KOS where Bush did the same thing during his term, everyone on here would be howling in protest about the KOS Kiddies and their usual annoying behavior, but the snide comments about "hopenchange" and other bullshit here elicit things like "oh my god for the first time in my adult life I'm so ashamed of being an American." Do ditch the drama and act like someone who has an adult life.

Sorry, Rex. You missed the point. If Bush had done something so boorish as this you can be sure that not only the Kos Kidz but the LGF Lizards would call it out. But Bush didn't do anything like this. No POTUS (not even Carter) was ever so rude and disrespectful to a major foreign leader and ally of the US. The One's bad behavior doesn't mix with foreign policy.

Yes, Mr. "Hopenchange" is an empty suit, a rude, unaccomplished, uneducated lout. He and his thugs, aided and abetted by a willing media, hoodwinked more than half of America's voters and he's now busy
misappropriating its wealth and disemboweling its social structure. Nothing snide here. Definitely no drama. Just calling truth to power.

Who carried out these polls, the BBC or the Guardian?

If this is true, please don't believe the hype of the overwhelmingly liberal MSN that we have over here.
