The Missing Link Between Seals and Land Mammals

Science • Views: 4,088

An amazing discovery in Canada, after a team of paleontologists ran out of gas: Arctic fossil points to missing link between seals and land mammals.

The fossil remains of a flipper-free mammal related to modern seals have been discovered in Nunavut by Ottawa researchers who stumbled upon them after their ATV ran out of gas.

Natalia Rybczynski, a paleontologist at the Canadian Museum of Nature, and her research team found the first bone of the ancient pinniped — the scientific group that includes seals, sea lions and walruses — while waiting for other team members to return with a jerry can of fuel during an expedition to a former crater lake on Devon Island in 2007.

The findings from the study, published in Thursday’s edition of Nature, suggest pinnipeds evolved in the Arctic from freshwater animals.

“It fills the gap between the land-living ancestor and the flippered seal-like animal that we see around us today,” Rybczynski said Wednesday.

The animal had a long, streamlined body with heavy limbs, suggesting it had well-developed muscles. It had a long tail and likely moved much more easily over land than modern seals. It was little longer than a cat from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail (about 110 centimetres). It didn’t have flippers, but had flattened digits that suggest webbed feet. Its canine teeth were large, indicating a meat eater, and it had a short snout and muscular jaw.

An artist’s conception shows Puijila darwini as otter-like, with a long tail and webbed feet. (Mark A. Klingler/Carnegie Museum of Natural History)

When running out of gas is a blessing in disguise:

"I was a little upset with myself for not checking the gas level so I was kind of scuffing my toes in the dirt and as I looked down, there was a black piece of bone," said Ross, who was studying at Ottawa's Carleton University at the time.

Fossil pollen suggests that at that time, Devon Island was warmer than it is today, with a climate similar to the northeastern U.S., and was covered in trees such as larch, alder, spruce, fir, pine, birch, chestnut and sweetgum.

The overly extended period of Mammoth-caused global cooling is finally coming to a close. The Mammoths fed the larger predators, whose oxygen was desperately needed by the planets flora. When the mammoths fell as a specie, the resulting ecological domino effect threw the planet tail-spinning into a period of global cooling which is, only now, beginning to return to its proper state.

Plane diverted to Logan;
'unruly passenger'
Last Edited: Friday, 24 Apr 2009, 11:04 PM EDT

BOSTON (myfoxboston) - A Delta flight from JFK International Airport in New York to Tel Aviv, Israel, was diverted to Boston's Logan Airport for an "unruly passenger" who reportedly tried to get into the cockpit, Massport said Friday.

Massport officials said other passengers and some crew members had to tackle 22-year-old Itay Atmor and secure him to a seat with seatbelts until the plane could land at Logan at about 10 p.m.

Authorities then boarded the plane and took him into custody.

Police said Atmor is from Israel. Officials said it appeared as if he had a panic attack.

Delta Air Lines flight #86 had 206 passengers onboard

Yes - it used it's small but evolved arms to reach up onto shore and eat its prey. So each time it had to reach a bit.

re: #55 nobomanohow

Oh brother....a bit of a reach don't you think?

Modern pinnipeds (seals, sea lions and the walrus) are semi-aquatic, generally marine carnivores the limbs of which have been modified into flippers. Recent phylogenetic studies using morphological and molecular evidence support pinniped monophyly, and suggest a sister relationship with ursoids1, 2 (for example bears) or musteloids3, 4, 5, 6, 7 (the clade that includes skunks, badgers, weasels and otters). Although the position of pinnipeds within modern carnivores appears moderately well resolved, fossil evidence of the morphological steps leading from a terrestrial ancestor to the modern marine forms has been weak or contentious. The earliest well-represented fossil pinniped is Enaliarctos, a marine form with flippers, which had appeared on the northwestern shores of North America by the early Miocene epoch8, 9. Here we report the discovery of a nearly complete skeleton of a new semi-aquatic carnivore from an early Miocene lake deposit in Nunavut, Canada, that represents a morphological link in early pinniped evolution. The new taxon retains a long tail and the proportions of its fore- and hindlimbs are more similar to those of modern terrestrial carnivores than to modern pinnipeds. Morphological traits indicative of semi-aquatic adaptation include a forelimb with a prominent deltopectoral ridge on the humerus, a posterodorsally expanded scapula, a pelvis with relatively short ilium, a shortened femur and flattened phalanges, suggestive of webbing. The new fossil shows evidence of pinniped affinities and similarities to the early Oligocene Amphicticeps from Asia and the late Oligocene and Miocene Potamotherium from Europe. The discovery suggests that the evolution of pinnipeds included a freshwater transitional phase, and may support the hypothesis that the Arctic was an early centre of pinniped evolution.

Truth is, even the very phrase "transitional form" is meaningless, because every form is a transitional form.

Every species that ever existed represents a transition from the species that preceded it and the one that followed it. Even humans are a "transitional form" between homo erectus and homo futuris, when we'll all walk around with six arms and giant pulsating brains behind our translucent foreheads.

Heh, Boss was right. Expect Spencer to back out any time now.

I laughed out loud, I admit it.

Frankly. all College season long I heard about and watched Tebow, McCoy, Bradford, etc. and then the moment the Bowls ended Stafford was the universal number one pick. I know those guys I mentioned didn't go the NFL route for their own reasons (timing), but I liked Sanchez better than all of them anyway.
I know the Lions have to FINALLY make the conventional choice in the first round to erase some of their monumentally poor recent picks, but my guess is that Sanchez will be a better NFL QB than Stafford.
Just a guess, and I know Stafford is no chump, but Sanchez is no Leaf, while Stafford might be.

Baby mammoth Lyuba, pristinely preserved, offers scientists rare look into mysteries of Ice Age

She may be 40,000 years old, but an amazingly well-preserved baby mammoth is in great shape for her age, bringing scientists closer to solving some of the mysteries of the Ice Age.

Lyuba, who was discovered in 2007 in the Russian Artic, was about one-month old when she fell victim to a mudslide or drowned according to National Geographic, which will air a special about her, "Waking the Baby Mammoth," on Sunday April 26 at 9 p.m.

The clay-like substance that likely suffocated her also "pickled" her, preserving the little mammoth in a nearly pristine state, USAToday.com reported.

Of course, like the moon landings, this is all so much bull[expletive deleted].

I've heard from sources in Europe that Belien and DeWinter are absolutely beside themselves with rage at me.

If I heard somebody thought I was a NeoNazi or racist, I would want to set the record straight and counter that with sustained rhetoric and logic clarifying that it was untrue.

If I believed that NeoNazism or racism was cool and somebody was giving me grief for it, I would counter that with sustained rhetoric and logic supporting my beliefs.

If I didn't have the ability to sustain rhetoric or logic, I guess I could just attack with some other weapon, or go home and grouse to somebody who would listen.

One would probably conclude that they don't have an argument supporting their positions. Unless you're a closet Nazi or racist, or, you were too stupid to figure out that you aligned yourself with some and are too embarrassed to admit it so you stir up a bunch of shit so you don't have to deal with it.

Spencers scientific work is occupied particularly with the force inclination Islam and the early developing history Koran. It attaches particular importance on the different character of the fundamentalism in the world religions, which demands solidarity with extremist actions in the Islam in all areas of life. The Islam becomes, so Spencer in its main theses, ever more to a challenge for the Christian world.

To this high-carat reinforcement of the pool of the international guests the chairman of the per movement expresses, attorney Markus Beisicht: „I am pleased much that with Robert Spencer such a proven religion scientist and Islam critic assured its participation in our congress of anti-islamizing. That shows that we arrived on the international stage and in the focus of the world public. The challenge, which the Islam places against our culture and the community of the world religions, is world-wide a topic, which employs numerous humans.

Only in Germany, a unhinterfragte siding takes place to the Islamic mass immigration and the associated expansion of the Politreligion Islam. The Islam-critical scientists have as well as no lobby and its warnings before the dangers of increasing islamizing by most humans are over-heard. With our congress we give a sufficiently large forum to the Islam criticism. I hope much that the reminders find of Robert Spencer on 9 May also in Cologne and in all of Germany hearing. “

RW: DMSO is a chemical solution that penetrates skin when you rub it on. Some people swear it's a great pain reliever, others say that's hooey. When you rub it on you get a garlic taste in your mouth...
[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

On September 9, 1965, the Wall Street Journal reported the death of an Irish woman after undergoing DMSO treatment for a sprained wrist.[14] Clinical research using DMSO halted and did not begin again until the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) published findings in favor of DMSO in 1972.[citation needed] In 1978, the U.S. FDA approved DMSO for treating interstitial cystitis. In 1980, the U.S. Congress held hearings on claims that the FDA was slow in approving DMSO for other medical uses. In 2007, the FDA granted "fast track" designation on clinical studies of DMSO's use in reducing brain tissue swelling following traumatic brain injury.[citation needed]

New concerns were raised when research in mice revealed that DMSO exposure to the developing brain can produce brain degeneration within hours of exposure[15]. This neurotoxicity could be detected at doses as low as 0.3 ml/kg which exceeds exposure levels seen in children who are exposed to DMSO during certain medical treatments. As a result, special caution should be used when exposure to the developing brain is possible.

While I've never used DMSO - neither as a solvent, nor a treatment - I find myself very leery of it. My squeamishness revolves around the idea of a very effective solvent that readily penetrates all the tissues our body uses in its natural defense, and that can carry with it so many contaminants that would otherwise rarely cross the skin.

That said, many people consider it a godsend, and I'm pretty sure extensive medical research has found it largely innocuous.

Definitely discuss it with an MD you trust and respect.

And take care of rw, rw! My heartfelt best wishes join those of your countless friends here - feel better, 'kay?

Agree on principle, but in this case the overall market is being unreasonably strong in the face of bad (and worse!) news. I'm very surprised we're back to 8000 in the first place. But remember, we're facing runaway inflation at any moment, Dow might just hit 90,000 before Obama leaves office, of course a loaf of bread will be 11,000 dollars.

Craziest danged market in history, I think.

384 Kronocide  Fri, Apr 24, 2009 10:47:44pm

I recall long ago when I was listening to KGO and Savage was getting some weekend openings. I thought he was funny half the time, before I got bored him.

My future ex-wife got in the car with me and I popped onto the radio for a long drive. I started snickering and said 'ya gotta listen to this guy he's hella funny.' He starts in on a rant about sexual harassment claims, and the 4th or 5th sentence he states 'every woman who claims sexual harassment should be fined $50.'

I started laughing as my future ex said 'WTF?' I recognized he wasn't serious but it sure was funny. Needless to say, we listened to music the rest of the way. Still laughing about that..

Here's a quote I saw tonight on Politico that I thought seemed apropos for these times:

"When small men begin to cast big shadows, it means that the sun is about to set." - Lin Yutang

Yeah, but I'm not expecting hyperinflation, just Carter-esque inflation and people probably wont notice it for a year or two. The Dow Might very well ride up on an inflation wave, I don't expect it this year though. If Obama is actually dumb enough to pull this kind of spending 2 or 3 years in a row, then we can talk Weimar Republic.

I'm also not sure if the soon to be re-setting underwater Alt-A/jumbo loans are "priced into" the market now either.

All this "news" aside. Technical indicators are not screaming BUY at all, they are kind of mumbling short or sell but even that's not clear.

Just about everyone of these is way over-bought on daily and weekly technicals. If it was me (and I'm doing this...) I'd wait for a testing of the Dow and S&P YTD lows or a least a protracted stagnant period in the 7000s before buying anything long term. Rarely does a "V-Bottom" turn out to be "The Bottom".

They're all top fundamental/technical stocks. Who said anything about about any of them being set up technically to buy or buying anything long term?

I do this too to stay retired.

/we're not testing those lows again this year

Mr. Bear. I said it was my primary watch list and wasn't necessarily buying anything from it. Last week set up one and it didn't work.

/I also play lots of small ball including options and margin when I need it, give us this day our daily bread. thousand here, thousand there, by the end of the year it adds up

So do I. A couple of percent a week adds up to alot. I never assume anyone else does this, because most dont and never make suggestions or observations based on that.

You said "not sure any of them are technically in buy range, that's the next step" so I checked.

DJIA at about +150 with ten minutes to go, selling drives it down to 75 before even bigger volume drives it to +120 within the last four minutes.

/I hven't read Monday's IBD yet and I assume the daily volume was lower Friday but the last minutes moves were impressive and the Bulls one at the close

This is the best link [Link: nature.ca...] It has interactive 3D models and explains why they think that its a Pinniped.

You need to be organized to find all the pages. The links at the top change as you navigate the site.

But click everything, its worth the effort. All paleo sites should be like this. They take the time to explain why they think what they think about the fossil and you learn some paleontology and some seal phylogeny.

Seals are a product of evolution.

Everybody knows that the last step in evolution of seals are... Navy SEAL's.

Go ask one of them for their fur....

Yet more proof evolution is nothing but a crock. There's this- obviously planted by the evil bushitlercheney Time Police- and the abject failure of evolutionary biologists to present us with the link between the Democrats and the vertebrates.

We know that this animal is a precursor to modern Canadian seals because the skull bears the indentations of impact from a prehistoric club.

You ommited your sarc tag, but I know that's the way you meant it, because this fossil is more than 20 million years old, while we both know that humans have been around for less than a million years (although far longer than a few thousand).
