I don’t have fun. Actually, I had fun once. In 1962. I drank a whole bottle of Robitussin cough medicine and went in the back of a 1961 powder-blue Lincoln Continental to a James Brown concert with some Mexican friends of mine. I haven’t had fun since. It’s not a word I like. It’s like Volkswagens or bell-bottoms, or patchouli oil or bean sprouts. It rubs me up the wrong way. I might go out and have an educational and entertaining evening, but I don’t have fun.

I'd say I like to go out drinking, but its more like I go out to take advantage of the people who go out drinking, but you don't get invited out as much when you tell them that.

Dems get busted trying to politicize pandemic funding

Sorry to interrupt all the liberal blogosphere’s unhinged GOP-bashing over conservative opposition to flu pandemic funding in the porkulus bill, but…

Well. Just an inconvenient reminder:

“All those little porky things that the House put in, the money for the [National] Mall or the sexually transmitted diseases or the flu pandemic, they’re all out,” Schumer said.

“Porky things.” Er, a rather unfortunate choice of words then. And now.

Leaves a bad taste in your mouth, doesn’t it?

The last time we had a Swine flu "epidemic", more people died from the vaccine than the actual flu. Mutating flu virus' are scary enough, we do not need the entire media of the world making it worse. When this calms down, I think we will see that many, many more people died from the seasonal flu we just had than from this strain.

But, that said....wash the hell out of your hands and stay away from sick people! Talk to your kids about washing as well. The little petri dishes are Typhoid Mary's in training

Ah, one of my own personal favorite zombietime videos! I'm glad others have it bookmarked as well. An all-time classic.

re: #24 The_Vig

Am I the only one who thinks all of this swine flu pandemic thing is way overblown. How many times will people cry pandemic, before no one cares.
100 people have died in a third world county and they want to declare a pandemic. Wake me when millions are dying. Or have I just become overly cynical?

Dennis Prager interviewed Michael Fumento this morning, who said that thousands die each year from the "regular" flu and no one bats an eye. The main difference is that this is not flu season. People haven't died here in the US because he surmises most US citizens have stronger immune systems. Others think we respond faster with a doctor vist and there are medications too, although not a vaccine. Fumento said the 1976 swine flu killed one person directly and hundreds indirectly. Those hundreds died as a result of a rushed-to-the-public vaccine. :)

Some hunger strike. She's not willing to die, and it wouldn't mean anything if she did. The Janjaweed and the Sudanese government don't care about her.

Neither does anyone else, really. Not enough to intervene and do something about Sudan.

Beccause we'd return to the past, when the west had to sacrifice minority infidel populations, ie, Christians (Lebanon, etc) and Joos (all over) so the Ottomans (now the Arabs) won't oppress the minorities in their midst more than they already do. They are already considered agents of the West.

As a young earth creationist, I don't believe that diseases can mutate....They are the way God created them.

Bunch of bullshit. Virii mutate all the time into more or less virulent forms. This one has become more virulent, and the fear now is that it could become a worse strain of influenza than it already is.

Bacteria mutate and evolve constantly, or have you not heard of antibiotic-resistant bacteria!?! You might as well forgo the vaccines then, since these are "the way God created them".

I agree with most of what you said, but there's no evidence yet that this strain has become "more virulent." IMHO what we currently have is a media that has become "more virulent" in their reporting.

I'm not saying it couldn't be more virulent. I'm just saying its yet another swine flu virus that has jumped to humans, nothing more.... yet

Empty Suit, California Style

To the delight of California’s illegal aliens, socialists, unqualified minority job-seekers and militant bicyclers who blow up Hummer dealerships in the name of suffering polar bears, smarmy San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced on Tuesday he is running for governor in 2010. Newsom chose San Francisco-based Twitter─the de facto, mandatory communication tool for hip celebs and gossipy high school girls─to officially reveal his plans. Indeed, inexperienced, over-packaged, provincial narcissists with radical agendas, cocaine issues, elitism fetishes, an undeserved sense of entitlement and contempt for the American way of life aren’t just for the White House anymore. California has found change it can believe in.

re: #162 Killgore Trout

It does raise an interesting point. It doesn't seem to be very contagious outside of Mexico (yet). I don't know if any of the Americans infected with pig flu caught it here in the states.

I was just reading yesterday's daily CDC press briefing on this point. It's actually a pretty lame briefing. The CDC spokesperson here isn't even saying how many of the U.S. cases were people who had traveled to Mexico. She does say that the CDC is pretty sure that person-to-person transmission is possible. And it seems to me that person-to-person transmission in Mexico is no different from person-to-person transmission in another country, so therefore there's no reason why one should have to travel to Mexico to get the disease.

On the other hand, young healthy people were dying from the flu in Mexico, and it looks like the few confirmed cases in the U.S. so far are all just getting better, and only one has had to be hospitalized. Maybe, I suppose, people who catch the disease directly from an animal get a more serious case, whereas people who catch the disease from another human get a more mild case. But I have no real reason to believe that this is what's happening. It's just an idea.

Basically, this particular briefing is just too lame to be helpful, and it's really annoying me that it's typed in all caps, so I'm going to keep looking for a better source.

Maybe the only reason we're not at Phase 5 yet is b/c most infected in other countries caught the virus while in Mexico. It seems like a technicality, but that's my best guess.

Soft on gangs? Isn't all of California a "sanctuary" state full of "sanctuary" cities?

Like Washington, DC! California's Chandra Levy was murdered by a Salvadoran illegal MS gangsta, who attacked other women using the same modus operandi, then gets jailed for another crime, gets flown across country to California, then gets jetted back to DC to stand trial for murdering Chandra Levy.

We have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on just this one murderous illegal alien thanks to "sanctuary" cities which treat murderers better than average citizens going about their business, behaving & working.

Allah did not create man so that he could have fun. The aim of creation was for mankind to be put to the test through hardship and prayer. An Islamic regime must be serious in every field. There are no jokes in Islam. There is no humor in Islam. There is no fun in Islam. There can be no fun and joy in whatever is serious.

re: #184 brookly red

Was just coming to here to post that.

For what its worth, WHO describes phase 4 as "characterized by verified human-to-human transmission of an animal or human-animal influenza reassortant virus able to cause 'community-level outbreaks.' The ability to cause sustained disease outbreaks in a community marks a significant upwards shift in the risk for a pandemic. Any country that suspects or has verified such an event should urgently consult with WHO so that the situation can be jointly assessed and a decision made by the affected country if implementation of a rapid pandemic containment operation is warranted. Phase 4 indicates a significant increase in risk of a pandemic but does not necessarily mean that a pandemic is a forgone conclusion."

Point? Mexico is the focal point here. All cases originated there. The problem is with modern air travel.

Good evening, Lizards.

My condolences to Dustyvet.

As for the flu problem, right now the death toll in Mexico is 149 and climbing, with 2000+ known infected. What I'm seeing is a classic Patient Zero-To-How Many? progression, which is capable of being handled. What The Self-Exalted One needs to do is as follows;

1. Fire Janet Napolitano, who not only doesn't have a clue but is apparently not even listening to the experts.

2. Let the experts (WHO, CDC, USAMRIID) do their jobs, according to the procedures they've worked out and repeatedly proven to work going back to the 1950s.

3. STFD, STFU, and take the credit.

This is not a pandemic yet. Granted, the H1N1 series viruses are tough little buggers, but we've had a long time to develop inoculations and other procedures to deal with them (since 1917, to be exact). All we need to do is Follow The Procedures. Think quarantine infected patients, ring inoculations of those they've been in contact with, and so on.

We do not need hysteria. Nor do we need a DHS director who defines the SOP as "too difficult" or "too late". BTW, the apparent reason DHS is running this is that The One hasn't gotten around to appointing a HHS director yet. (On the plus side, that means the people at HHS who actually know what they're doing probably aren't getting too many Captain Peter Peachfuzz-style "directives" down their chain of command... yet.)

If The One wants to do something useful, he could read The Last Centurion by John Ringo and/or Executive Orders by Tom Clancy, to get some idea as to what he should be doing if things get worse (Clancy) and what he should not be doing unless he really wants this to blow up in his face (Ringo). (Besides, he really needs to read something besides his two autobiographies.)

P.S.- if anyone else is interested, the first 9 chapters of Ringo's book are now available online at the Baen Free Library. (Yes, you heard me- free.) They make interesting, if foreboding, reading at the moment.

That's about all I have to say on the subject. For now.

cheers

The myth survived until around the time the English began exploring the Eastern seaboard of North America in earnest. It was fed by the four survivors of Pánfilo de Narváez's unsuccessful expedition to Florida in 1527. One was Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca

Sorry, other life responsibilities have moved to the forefront recently. Not much time for photo-blogging!

Say Zombie, I meant to tell you sometime ago -- referring to the probable date of the "Ed" photos of Ground Zero on your website, those pics couldn't have been taken as early as September 13 just due to the logistics of transporting and setting up the huge cranes shown in the photos. Procuring them and transporting them through narrow New York streets to the scene would take a couple of days, and then setting up, assembling, and connecting those long booms would have taken another day or two. It's not a trivial task.

I'd estimate that very little got done on the 12th until the shock wore off, and the logistics of getting the biggest cranes there, kicked in after that. The smaller equipment could have just been loaded on a transporter and be on the scene overnight.
