The Name-Jackers Are At It Again

Blogosphere • Views: 2,558

Every once in a while, a random deranged idiot gets on the Internet and impersonates me, registering accounts in my name, and posting ugly and/or crazy comments at other blogs and websites. Several people have emailed to let me know that someone’s been doing this yesterday and today; one place where the creep has appeared is in this thread at Think Progress: Santorum: Reconciliation ‘Has Never Been Done Before’ — Except For When I Used It.

So I’ll just announce very simply: I don’t post comments at other websites, except in very rare cases where I know the site owner and my identity can be verified. So if you see a commenter somewhere that claims to be me … it isn’t.

On a related subject, a few days ago I received the following email with a return address that appeared to be from Allahpundit at Hot Air, titled: “What the f-ck is wrong with you?”

Have you f-cking lost your god damned mind, Charles? I have noted a strong
decline in your abilities of late and certainly question this new direction
you are moving.

Either way, have fun. I won\\’t be there to witness it.

Of course, the email was not from Allahpundit, as I quickly confirmed. The sender had used a website that allows people to send “prank” emails appearing to be from anyone. So again: don’t believe it if you get an email that seems to be from me, containing weird comments or insults.

(If the administrator from ThinkProgress reads this, please send me the IP address of the person who’s posting under my name at your website, and block its account.)

UPDATE at 4/28/09 8:59:19 am:

The name-jacker also appears at the Washington Independent, along with a few other vitriol-spewing morons, and an apologist for Eurofascists.

I've been noticing this at a certain counterfeit site. They seem to take great delight in using other people's names and nics.

Yes, they have full deblown debates with themselves by posting under other people's nics. It's an odd fantasy to act out.

This nic-jacking or name-jacking seems to be perpetrated by those who cannot get over their banning from LGF. If they can be prosecuted to fullest extent of the law, I hope they are. It's disgusting.

8 Irish Rose  Tue, Apr 28, 2009 8:49:27am

Three guesses what website these cretins are crawling out of.

Could it be perhaps, the website where LGF regulars are impersonated on a regular basis?

Maybe. I see this as simply an extension of behavior that has always infected society. This is a virtual electronic version of the school yard bully, the gossiper in the office, the gabby next store neighbor, the public bulletin board with nasty notes, the backbiting that goes on in social groups, the lies and machinations that people perpertrate among each other...

No, the internet only allows this sort of stuff to be amplified and speeded up. But nothing is new, just scarier.

Using a Nickname to "defame" some anonymous poster is one thing -- Using another person's actual, real name so as to defame the person is quite another matter. the latter, imo, is simply not legal...(I don't know of any nation/state in which this would be acceptable.)

You evidently did not grow up around the sort of disfunctional families and friends that I did.

If you have never experienced this in your social life, among family, friends, workers etc. then you are very lucky.

This sort of stuff DOES happen outside of the internet, and has for many, many years.

And yes, it's obsessive and pathological, but nothing new.

They need help, yes, but so do a lot of people who cause these problems for the people that surround them, but they never get help.

OK, Charles has banned some folks over the years for the comments they have made. Some of them went and made a counterfiet site (pretending to be LGF). These twits nic-jacked Killgore and Sharmuta, pretending to be them there so they could have arguments with them. It is suspected that these folks may be behind name-jacking Charles as noted above.

Sharm, I grew up with people who's daily mission was to make it as hard as they could for other people. I grew up in Brooklyn. There were bullies that waited, every day, at the same spot on a street corner, and would pick a fight with the SAME kids every day, day after day. Nothing new now.

I lived in apartment buildings where families had members who would get drunk every day, day after day, and then get violent. Nothing new today.

I knew co-workers who's only mission seem to be to get other employees fired, employees they didn't like. If you got targeted by one of these jerks, you would be out of a job with in a few months.

Gosh, where have you been. This sort of crap has been going on for ever. Just because it's on the internet doesn't make it special.

What is happen now is only exponential, but not new, not excessive and not a mystery.

A now-banned poster, who had created an imaginary life and posted extensively about it, made a threat to kill the boyfriend of his pregnant (step?) daughter. That got him the stick. Then, when if became obvious that his identity was a construct, Charles deleted all his posts. Who knows if the daughter, boyfriend, or situation even existed.

Since I have no idea what you are trying to say, or if you are trying to be funny (if so, get another writer, the comedy stinks) I will take the low road here and tell you to...

Fuck off.

Name-jackers should be treated by law just like any other identity thieves.

While our President played P-I-G with the UConn ladies, his staff was having fun in NYC. Check out this video which I think is the clearest (and therefore scariest) yet.

Specter would've given them his vote anyway, regardless of the letter behind his name.

Oh well. He will probably switch back to being pro-card check now.

Hasta la vista, secret ballots in unionization drives.

Here's a great article about Specter:

[Link: www.republican-leadership.com...]

I know some of you don't like Christie Whitman or Jack Danforth, but that article was on the mark about Specter and his odd relationship with the GOP.

Hm. Reading the posts, it's become clear that nic-stealing is just another form of identity theft, but one that could be extremely dangerous if some moron goes over the top.

I guess I just want to put it on record here that I only post at LGF. Nowhere else. If my nic shows up anywhere else, it's a fake.

(At least now it's archived here.)

You can file that under "never gonna happen". But we do need a dedicated thread to discuss exactly how screwed we are by Spector jumping ship.

Thanks for belittling me. You know- it's quite possible that I've been the target of such people in my life, both analog and digital. However- in the analog world, most people didn't run around pretending to be me to score cheap shot points- they had other things to do. The person behind this is very sick with too much time on their hands. Excuse the hell out of me for mentioning it.

re: #76 Son of the Black Dog

A now-banned poster, who had created an imaginary life and posted extensively about it, made a threat to kill the boyfriend of his pregnant (step?) daughter. That got him the stick. Then, when if became obvious that his identity was a construct, Charles deleted all his posts. Who knows if the daughter, boyfriend, or situation even existed.

I knew about the banning, and about the deteriorating sanity of the posts and described situation, but I didn't know the whole thing was a fabrication.

Wow.

97 Gus  Tue, Apr 28, 2009 9:13:15am

The name jacking and the comments from the likes of the neo-Nazi apologists, LGF2 psychos, Spencer apologists, and Geller apologists makes a point -- it points to the devalued, anti-social, and pathological nature of said persons.

It also points to the morally defunct nature of said groups and their adherents. Some are blatantly showing a compulsive neurotic form of behavior bordering on the criminal and commonly associated with stalkers, wife beaters, and other criminal misanthropes.

Check out Specter's contributors list sometime and sum up the contributions from Comcast and Blank Rome, LLP (Comcast's lawyers and registered lobbyists) then you'll know why he went on his NFL Jihad - (Comacats has been fighting with the NFL over the NFL Network since its inception).

Arlen Specter Switching Parties Today?

I wouldn't put any stock in this until it comes from Specter or a named member of his staff. This rumor has gone around before (it seems to repeat itself on a regular basis) and has never been true in the past.

This sort of stuff DOES happen outside of the internet, and has for many, many years.

And yes, it's obsessive and pathological, but nothing new.

They need help, yes, but so do a lot of people who cause these problems for the people that surround them, but they never get help.

So you know my ex-wife, then?

127 Etaoin Shrdlu  Tue, Apr 28, 2009 3:59:11pm
The sender had used a website that allows people to send “prank” emails appearing to be from anyone.

In my day, you had to telnet to port 25 by hand…

Ya damn kids, get off my 'net.

128 Achilles Tang  Tue, Apr 28, 2009 7:02:28pm

I'm not familiar with "prank" websites, although I receive one two hundred "pranks" per day, mostly coming from myself at one particular email address I have at me@spamcop.net.

I call them spam.

For those interested, Spamcop filters my mail and holds 99.99% of it which I scan quickly periodically during the day for the very occasional valid email, that I add to my whitelist.

The difference with this and any other spam filter is that spamcop then traces the source of the email and most website hosts and sends a reports to the registered contact for those sites, as well as adding to the statistics for other interested parties in vaccinating against spammer scum.

So far, the past few years I have reported close to 140,000 spam. Most of those sent to my spamcop address.

I must have done something really stupid in my earlier years for so many spammers to have that address, but not nearly as stupid as the assholes who try to spam a spamcop address

Anyway, these days I invite them. How else can I target them?

129 Achilles Tang  Tue, Apr 28, 2009 7:15:01pm

re: #22 Walter L. Newton

I think you miss the evolutionary jump that electronic communications has made to social interaction.

The extension of behavior is correct, but what you miss is the correction of behavior that has always existed in the past, whether by ignoring (because the message is limited in distribution) or by personal social disapproval because the moonbat is personally known.
