Tamil Tiger Terrorists Give Up

World • Views: 2,157

After decades of suicide bombings and terrorist attacks, the Sri Lankan military has dealt a decisive blow to the Tamil Tigers.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The Tamil Tigers admitted defeat Sunday in their fierce quarter-century war for a separate homeland as government forces raced to clear the last pockets of rebel resistance from the war zone in the north.

Far from the battlefield, thousands of Sri Lankans danced in the streets of Colombo, celebrating the stunning collapse of one of the world’s most sophisticated insurgencies. But with rebel leader Velupillai Prabhakaran still at large, the threat of renewed guerrilla warfare remained.

Several rebel fighters committed suicide when they were surrounded, but it wasn’t clear whether Prabhakaran or other leaders were among them.

The Tamil Tigers once controlled a shadow state complete with courts, police and a tax system across a wide swath of the north. By Sunday, troops had surrounded the remaining rebels in a 0.4-square-mile (1-square-kilometer) patch of land and were fighting off suicide bombs and other attacks, the military said.

The Sri Lankan military ended this by sitting down and talking to them, right?

Prabhakaran alive will mean the fight will continue by other means.

Let's hope he used the cyanide he carries.

The rebels have been fighting since 1983 for a separate state for Sri Lanka's ethnic Tamil minority after years of marginalization at the hands of the Sinhalese majority. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

See what happens to people who are not fighting against the horrible, nazi Israelis?

There have been negotiations for years in an attempt to "peacefully" resolve the disputes. Everything failed. Sometimes military muscle is the only solution.

The BBC has background on the war. See the right-hand sidebar links.

Don't know how to measure the Beeb in this one, but they DO maintain a significant staff on the island. I suspect they're as fair-and-balanced on this subject as anyone.

12 Shiplord Kirel  Sun, May 17, 2009 1:58:32pm

The Tigers are favorites of the media-NGO-peacenik culture, revered as a symbol of the post-Vietnam dogma that there can be no military solution to an ethnic insurgency. This is a victory not just for the Sri Lankan government and national unity but for the rule of law all over the world.

Picture:

President Mahinda Rajapakse kneels on disembarking from his aircraft at the Colombo International airport on May 17, 2009 and walks into a hero's welcome on his return from Jordan. The president declared that the island's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels have been "defeated militarily" after decades of bitter ethnic bloodshed.

From the CIA World Factbook:

In the 14th century, a south Indian dynasty established a Tamil kingdom in northern Sri Lanka...Tensions between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil separatists erupted into war in 1983. Tens of thousands have died in the ethnic conflict that continues to fester. [Not anymore, so it seems. s.b.] After two decades of fighting, the government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) formalized a cease-fire in February 2002 with Norway brokering peace negotiations. Violence between the LTTE and government forces intensified in 2006 and the government regained control of the Eastern Province in 2007. In January 2008, the government officially withdrew from the ceasefire, and by late January 2009, the LTTE remained in control of a small and shrinking area of Mullaitivu district in the North.

Of course, this is from the CIA and you know how they lie.

The army has the upper hand and this must be pressed to a conclusion, the rebels can either come out with their hands up or they can die.

re: #18 FurryOldGuyJeans

They're mostly Hindu.

The Tamils are an ethnic group that lives in southern India (mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu) and on Sri Lanka, an island of 21 million people off the southern tip of India. Most Tamils live in northern and eastern Sri Lanka, and they comprise approximately 10 percent of the island's population, according to a 2001 government census. Their religion (most are Hindu) and Tamil language set them apart from the four-fifths of Sri Lankans who are Sinhalese—members of a largely Buddhist, Sinhala-speaking ethnic group. When Sri Lanka was ruled as Ceylon by the British, most Sri Lankans regarded the Tamil minority as collaborators with imperial rule and resented the Tamil's perceived preferential treatment. But since Sri Lanka became independent in 1948, the Sinhalese majority has dominated the country. The remainder of Sri Lanka's population includes ethnic Muslims, as well as Tamil and Sinhalese Christians.

I read that the breakthrough came when Columbo ditched the Indians and took the Chinese training and equipment. This bodes bad for the Indians if their war doctrines are so far off that the Chinese can end in a couple years what festered for over 20 years using Indian techniques. If another Chinese or Pakistani war breaks out against Inida they may loose a lot of acerage with possible Nuclear repercussions.

Well, it started off that way. Eventually hugs broke out and a campfire was started. Soon marshmallows and hot chocolate was broken out with several rounds of kumbaya being bellowed out by the two groups. :-)

And that is what get me. If they have that mentality, then why the heck are they leaving their land of origin anyway?

The bad news is that because of the wholly unnecessary coddling of LTTE terrorists by the West the government of Sri Lanka has found other patrons. We could not support destroying the Tigers because they were supported on occasion by India and the Indians are saintly, a movie said so. Also destroying the Tigers would set a bad precedent regarding other Marxist mass murdering terrorists, such as the Palestinians and their supporters in places like Pakistan, who are engaged in low level war with India, who are on the other side of the Sri Lankan conflict. At this point it is all to complicated for Western journalists or diplomats to follow and they adjourn for a liquid lunch.

The other patrons the Sri Lankan government turned to are the Chinese. They are building a major seaport in the country that will go nicely with the one they have built in Pakistan. While we dither and lose all influence over the actors and shove our military into the back of beyond the Chinese are locking up the Indian Ocean.

Surprise.

I will say this about the conflict: there's a whole contingent of conservative bloggers who have pointedly ignored the Tamil tigers. Why? Because they are inconvenient in not being muslim terrorists. I've posted many links on their terror attacks over the years. Rarely have people clicked them.

The other thing I'll point out is there are comments upthread saying kill the tamil tigers. Notice that they haven't been deleted. That's because the Tamil tigers are known terrorists who have killed thousands and because the comment is specific in saying "kill the Tamil Tigers". It's also ok to say "Kill the Taliban. All about being specific about killing real terrorists.

The Tsar was killed by the Pole Ignacy Hryniewiecki (1856-1881), who died during the attack. Hryniewiecki was a Pole from Lithuania (Bobrujsk, now Babruysk, Belarus), where suppression of Poles and persecutions were the harshest. Wiki:

Although anti-Muslim pogroms had occurred in the north and east of Sri Lanka since 1985, the LTTE embarked on a campaign to expel Muslims from the North in 1989. The first eviction notice was sent to the Muslims of Chavakacheri on October 15, 1989, after the LTTE entered the local mosque and threatened Muslims a few weeks earlier.[161] Afterward, the houses of evicted Muslims were ransacked and looted.[161] On October 28, 1989, the Muslims of Mannar, in the North of Sri Lanka, were told,

"All Muslims living in Mannar island should leave by 28 October. Before leaving, they must seek permission and clearance at the LTTE Office. The LTTE will decide their exit route."[161]

Then we could start with Kamikaze pilots.

Those were discriminating; they went after military targets.

Attacking civilians is a war crime; attacking naval ships is not. Thus, the kamikazes, while causing quite a bit of damage, were POWs if they survived.
Had we caught the 9/11 terrorists, they would not deserve the protection of POWs.
I know some liberals won't agree with me on the latter point, though.

189 dmandman  Sun, May 17, 2009 3:21:10pm

The Armenian genocide was rationalized on a spectacular suicide by an Armenian patriot as he was being escorted to a prison cell in a Turkish fort. They said he had somehow concealed a gun in his sleave and fired into the magazine as they were passing killing several thousand troops beside himself. Unfortunately, it never happened....it was just the Turks struggling to propagandize the foreign lands to accept the horror stories that were coming out of the Ex-Ottoman Empire. The story persisted and was one of the suicide bomb legends that persist to this day.

False point, while they might have targeted marked non-combatant hospital ships we can take it until proven otherwise that their targets were valid military objects. The mass nature of the attack on a ship is no more invalid than an artillery barrage. Kamikaze was a terrible weapon and the Japanese did many horrible war crimes in WW-II but the Kamikaze was not per se a weapon of terrorism directed at civilians as the LTTE suicide bombers have been.

There wasn't anyone having moral qualms about "irregular" soldiers being captured on the battle field or elsewhere (as spies) until the American phase of the war in Vietnam. For instance, if the Korean troops caught anyone in their zone playing head games like that they simply hung them (no trial) and left their corpses up in the air until they rotted off. During WWII, it was well know that if you engaged out of uniform or among civilians, it they caught you alive it was all over. After they questioned you quite harshly, if they felt you were of no further value you got a bullet and thrown away. Britian had German POW's they abused for years after the end of the war and what Stalin's people did to anyone they thought inconvenient (even their allies) people have written books on the brutality. Paraphrasing Yakov Smirnov "only in the USA, what a great country". The emigration of Iraqi Christians is threatening to redraw the demographic map of Iraq. While many Iraqis have left their country because of sectarian violence as a temporary choice, the departure of the Christians is bound to be permanent.
The Christian emigration will have serious implications for the future of Iraq, since Christians have historically been a significant segment of the middle class and performed vital functions in medicine, engineering, culture and civil service.
A couple of days earlier, the Latin Patriarch in Baghdad, Jan Benyamin Suleiman, expressed his concern that Christianity will disappear from the Middle East.

Yes. And many kamikazes were killed before they crashed into a ship; they were fighting armed opponents.
Now, if you want to bring up the rape of Nanking; the Bataan death march; the condition in Japanese POW camps; etc.; there were plenty of war crimes committed by the Japanese. But, as you say, kamikazes weren't among them.

Bloody urban battles could lie ahead in Pakistan

Pakistani security forces fought Taliban militants on the outskirts of the main city in the northwest's Swat Valley and entered two other Taliban-held towns there, the army said Sunday, foreshadowing what could become bloody urban battles.

A top government official said the offensive near Afghanistan had already killed more than 1,000 Taliban fighters, while a group of pro-government religious leaders endorsed the operation but condemned U.S. missile strikes in the northwest.

More than 1000 Taliban fighters- that's great.

You speaketh the truth- The Tamil fighters deserve to be utterly annhilated.

They have brought ruin to a beautiful country for way too long, rooted along by rich Canadians and Australian ex-pats. Shame on them all. That said, I hope the Sinhalese can rise above this and bring about a more egalitarian society after this. Class division, a caste-like system and emnity toward the Tamils by the Sinhalese and vice versa, ran very deep prior to the conflict but because of all the destruction they have wrought, it's even worse. The Sinhalese were shits to the Tamils, but the Tamils turned around and were 10 times worse. I hope all the people who lost their livelihoods in Jaffna and surrounds that were purged out 20 years ago by the Tamils can regain their land, but most of all I hope the Tamils and the Sinhalese can get along now peacefully. I don't think it's going to go smoothly.

Scientists now trying to outflank HIV/AIDS virus

Unsuccessful at developing vaccines that the cause the body's natural immune system to battle the virus, researchers are testing inserting a gene into the muscle that can cause it to produce protective antibodies against HIV.

The new method worked in mice and now has proved successful in monkeys, too, they reported Sunday in the online edition of the journal Nature Medicine. The team is led by Dr. Philip R. Johnson of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"We used a leapfrog strategy, bypassing the natural immune system response that was the target of all previous HIV and SIV vaccine candidates," Johnson said. HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, causes AIDS in people. The closely related simian virus, or SIV, affects monkeys.

"Some years ago I came to the conclusion that HIV was different from other viruses for which we were trying to develop vaccines and we and might not ever be able to use traditional approaches," Johnson said in a telephone interview.

He said the researchers knew there were proteins that could neutralize the HIV virus, so they began thinking about whether they could use them to fight the disease.

Well- trying to contain the disease isn't enough. It's a virus, and it will mutate, and it already has. Containment also doesn't help any of the millions of people infected. Breakthroughs like this can lead to treatments.

You'll have to forgive me for bringing this up for the 300th time, but if I was one of those all-powerful supervillains in a blaxploitation flick, my insidous plot to undermine inner-city blacks would be to create an 'art' form that glorified selling drugs, criminal behavior, treating women- especially black women- like shit, black-on-black violence and getting constantly high and drunk while spending one's ill-gotten gains on conspicuous trophies or baubles instead of helping out in the community. Of course, there would be enough blacks out there who could see through this 'art' form and righteously assail it for the brainless misogynist shit that it really is. The best defense against that would be to have th 'artists' assail the critics for "not really knowing what it's like in the 'hood" if they're white or "Uncle Toms, Oreos or sellouts" if these critics are black.

I would call this 'art' form....'hip-hop'.

But alas- somebody has beaten me to it by some 25 years or so.

Reason Online is monitoring the battle for the tent:

A note to Cato Institute senior fellow Jerry Taylor: If you want to diss the Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh cultists, best not do it on the National Review group blog. Writing on The Corner, Taylor makes a handful of perfectly sensible points about Limbaugh's "sub-Nixon popularity figures" and the sometimes "dubious logic and dodgy evidence being forwarded to buttress [talk radio hosts'] arguments." As Taylor notes, he's not against conservative talk radio but would simply rather have a smarter, "better conservative talk radio."

And that's when the fun started.

And see the previous read on this issue here:

If conservatism seems rudderless today—opposed to so much, in favor of so little—it is hardly the first time. In a 1971 interview with author George Nash, the libertarian fusionist Frank Meyer sighed that his comrades in the conservative movement defined themselves primarily in opposition to liberalism, forsaking a coherent governing strategy based on clearly defined principles. Indeed, when Meyer made these comments, there was a Republican in the White House who, on important issues like wage and price controls, had little interest in governing from the right. It was perhaps these years in the wilderness, being unaccustomed to success, that held together the always tenuous libertarian-conservative coalition. In his classic study The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America Since 1945, Nash noted that, despite fissures in the free market and social conservative wings of the movement, the right had, for the most part, "managed to remain united and cooperative."

But that was then. Today, the libertarian-conservative alliance is marked more by skepticism than cooperation, though President Barack Obama's response to the financial crisis will likely push the two groups back into an uneasy coalition. After the disastrous Republican losses of 2006 and 2008 and the deeply unpopular war in Iraq, Republicans might want to revisit Frank Meyer's question: Conservatives know what they are against, but what on earth are they for?

I think Cordesmann's study is disinformation. They pointedly ignored some of Israel's known capabilities (mostly in the missile field) but went on and on about an essentially impossible maneuver, sending tankers into hostile airspace. There are other possibilities that haven't been discussed in this context. Some of these involve technologies that are well-known and developed but that haven't been associated with the IDF. There are also geographic aspects that are not being discussed. I won't discuss them here, but does anyone really think the IDF task force that wiped out the arms convoy in Sudan staged directly from Israel?

Interesting. I'm a little skeptical of Reason Magazine but that it's an interesting article. I just stumbled upon this.....
Lindsey Graham gets combative over GOP future

According to The State newspaper and video posted on YouTube, the South Carolina senator told the convention he wants to build a party that can compete in Pennsylvania and Connecticut as well as in his home state.

“You’re a hypocrite!,” one man in the audience yelled.

“I’m a winner, pal,” Graham retorted. Moments later, after saying he wants to the party to reach out to independent voters, he said: “Winning matters to me. If it doesn’t matter to you, there’s the exit sign.”

The crowd in Columbia also featured some Ron Paul supporters who offered several libertarian resolutions during the convention that were rejected by the state party.

During his speech, Graham told the audience, "Ron Paul is not the leader of this party." That remark drew a few jeers, with several people yelling, "Yes he is!"

“I’m not going to give this party over to people who can’t win,” Graham responded.

I don't know what to make of the video.....

He did get some good applause at the end but the crowd wasn't nearly as repulsed by the Paulians as they should have been. If nothing else the Paulians are getting bolder.

STATE PARTY CHOOSES FIRST WOMAN CHAIR, CONVENTION NOT WITHOUT DRAMA

And following the election of SCGOP officers, a small band of Ron Paul activists attempted to usurp parliamentary procedure to upset the adoption of the party resolutions and platform.

The group was hoping to strike a resolution commending Sen. Lindsey Graham’s service to the state. They also added a number of amendments to the platform hoping to strike traditional Republican language and replace

Convention President Bobby Harrell and SCGOP parliamentarian Todd Kincannon ensured that procedure was followed and granted all delegates the opportunity to proposes changes before the body in accordance with Robert’s Rules of Order.

But the attempts were resoundingly defeated by the 700-plus SCGOP delegates and both the resolutions and platform were adopted as presented. And the planned coup angered many activists in attendance.

At the South Carolina GOP convention, a place where you might think anti-government nuts are doing well, several libertarian amendments proposed by Ron Paul supporters were defeated.

I just got two emails from people who'd seen my remarks about my friend Ruth collapsing at our dinner table, asking how she is. So, and update:

She's in the hospital, they're keeping her lying flat because they still don't know what happened or what caused it. We (my Male and I) went to see her and took her a fluffy book. She looked all right, and her vitals looked OK, particularly her heart had a nice strong rhythm. So now it's a matter of waiting for word from the doctors. As soon as they turn her loose, we're scooping her up and bringing her back here for a couple days.

Looks like reports that the Paulians are hijacking the party are premature.

See my comments about the recent Wis GOP convention.

On a state by state march, the Paulians appear to be winning some, losing some.

I saw a show on submarines where the commander said that when he had to choose the torpedoes to use, he decided since the Belgrano was a WWII-vintage cruiser, he'd use similar era torpedoes.

The CIA would have to know first, and I think the first knowledge they'll get is when whatever it is happens.
I have my guesses.

Leon Panetta's mission to stop Israel bombing Iranian nuclear plant

America’s spy chief was sent on a secret mission to Israel to warn its leaders not to launch a surprise attack on Iran without notifying the US Administration.

As Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, prepares to visit Washington, it emerged yesterday that Leon Panetta, the head of the CIA, went to Israel two weeks ago. He sought assurances from Mr Netanyahu and Ehud Barak, the Defence Minister, that their hawkish new Government would not attack Iran without alerting Washington.

And the liberal terrorist lovers and apologists have been telling us all along that terrorists can not be defeated, there will only be more of them for every one that gets killed. It's good to see that facts contradict their braindead logic and their pathetic wishful thinking. If any group of terrorists anywhere in the world haven't been defeated yet, it's simply because enough of them haven't been taken out yet. Keep killing them, and eventually they will cease to exist.

Terrorists defeated anywhere in the world, whatever their religion or cause, is a cause for celebration.

Now I can only hope that the Sri Lankan government, which has some Buddhist supremacists in its midst, will not go back to the old way of doing things, which led in part to the Tamil terrorism beginning in the 1970's.

The Tamil Tigers carried out some "cleansing" against Muslims at certain points, but they were more interested in etchic autonomy than anythng else.

territories they held.

380 Turtler  Mon, May 18, 2009 3:48:03pm

Sorry everybody, but I'm not going to join the celebrations yet.

As others mentioned, the LTTE were unconnected with the global Jihad- save for some of the more rabid members who got into a great deal of trouble over it from both sides of the aisle- and (unlike the Jihad), their grievances are not ENTIRELY contrived (emphasis on the "Entirely," they still enjoyed pulling war crimes out of their butts like most effective guerrilla groups).

In addition- and you can quote me on this- I don't think this will solve much, and if it does, I shudder to think of how it will be solves. While I have almost always been pro-Colombo throughout this conflict, their talks about a "military solution" to "solve" the "Tamil Problem" has begun to sound very familiar to those who have studied European history circa 1900-1956, and the growing power of the military and its allies over free discourse is not pleasant. It is a bit of dark humor that one can change his ethnicity instantly (from Sinhalese, the favored Buddhist majority, to Tamil, the Hindu minority) by criticizing the government, but the number of journalists who have died under mysterious circumstances is not to be ignored.

Also, to those of you yakking about how this is some great reversal for India, I must disagree. The difference between the Sri Lankan military when it was under Western (US and Indian) guidance and now that it is tied to Beijing is not the quality of doctrine or material- if anything, the Indian-trained Sri Lankans were better in combat than they are now- but morality. our aid came with negotiating strings, the Chinese aid didn't. This allowed Colombo to get out the ax and start whacking the LTTE hard, and that eventually lead to where we are now, for better or worse.

In addition, while it is true that the Indians did do a handful of supply runs to the LTTE in the early days, the murder of Rajiv Gandhi by an LTTE suicide bomber, coupled with the POLTE conflict in the Maldives, added to the fact that the Indians actually were allies of Colombo for a large period of time, and it is safe to say that the LTTE's demise will be greeted to cheers across the country.

So yes, I am glad that the murdering, genocidal rats known as the LTTE are finally gone, and far past their experation date I might add.

However, I fear that this will ultimately backfire. A Colombo aligned with China could be bad news.

In addition, the Leftist idiots may actually find vindication in the aftermath.

Part of the reason the LTTE managed to endure for so long is because they cast themselves as the defenders of Tamil sovereignty against the racial tyranny and prejudice of Sinhalese-dominated Colombo and Southern society.

Another part comes from the fact that these claims were not unwarrented.

If Colombo wants to try to take their rage out on the remaining- and largely innocent- Tamils after their victory (or worse, actually implement a "final military solution" to the Tamil PEOPLE, something that a few radicals have openly flirted with), than we will probably see Tamil nationalism and radicalism be reborn within the decade, and see it simmer until one group is literally wiped from the island.

I hope this kill-joy post is ultimately for naught.

Well, most likely one less terror group in the world, and that is almost always something to celebrate about.
