Some sad personal news tonight.
My little dog, Roswell the Atomic Poodle, died peacefully in his sleep sometime last night.
He was 15 years old, born on October 12 1993, and had lived a long and happy life. He had been in good health and fairly active for what is a very advanced age for a dog. Like most poodles, he was amazingly intelligent. For example, he had a distinctive greeting bark for each of my daughters and, among other things, used it to demonstrate that he could tell which one of them I was talking to on the phone.
This is doubly sad because he was my late wife's dog. She did not tell me she was getting him. I did not like small dogs at the time, and was horrified when she brought him home. "300 bucks for a hairball that makes messes on the carpet!" She won the ensuing argument, as usual. I eventually grew to love the little guy. I would swear he knew when she died. He was listless and depressed from the very moment I came home from the hospital. He recovered, just as I did, and he has been devoted to me ever since. Perhaps they are re-united now.
I have put his little body in a safe place, and I will going to the expense of having him buried at a pet cemetery. It is the least I can do for the years of companionship and happiness he has brought us.

Animatronic Obama Going to Disney World With High-Tech Style
LOS ANGELES — Barack Obama was standing on a riser inside a warehouse here, delivering an inspirational speech about the blessings of freedom, when his left index finger began to twitch uncontrollably, unnerving his aides.
The nation’s 44th president was in obvious distress. At least it looked like him. But with silicone skin and a tangled nest of wires for veins, this Obama was a 21st-century reproduction.
More specifically, it was an audio-animatronic representation of the president, as imagined by the Walt Disney Company, and assembled with the direct involvement of the White House staff — and of Mr. Obama himself. The president supplied not just his measurements, but he also recorded that speech (which was initially drafted by a Disney writer) — and yet another recitation of the oath of office, this one in Disney high-definition sound.
How difficult can this be? Build an outside that looks like 0bama, and an inside that works like a teleprompter – You're done!
Maybe it's going in their new attraction: Pirates of the Somalian!
Ann Althouse's take is quick and succint:
Since when are American children expected to identify with the President?

Guess what he'll be reciting?
But the emotional high point is intended to be the introduction of the Obama figure, who will yet again be heard taking the oath.
Bad news, though. This won't be the one you heard on January 20th:
Mr. Obama recorded this version on March 4 in the White House Map Room — the same room where he retook the oath after a minor flub on Inauguration Day — to accommodate the Disney World theater’s new sound system. At that time, Mr. Obama also read aloud a short speech to be delivered by the figure, one that ultimately passed through the computer of Jon Favreau, a presidential speechwriter.

Its probably not a bad thing.
I was thinking that he must have some kind of a flag for blogs and articles that mention Pakistan to have pick up on your article post.
If that is the case, he may well have heard about LGF.
I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, meaning that I think that what we read in the one post that I linked to gives insight into who he is and what he is all about.
I don't think he is exactly what we would call a friend, nor do I think we could call him an enemy. We may have some goals and hopes for the future that are in common, which may be enough to accept him for what he is without feeling unduly threatened by him.
But then again, I expect the future to be very messy so I may be a very poor judge of such things.

If we're able to watch TV after the energy rates go up. This is just the warm-up act. GM closed at 1.43 and they're getting another 4 billion.

The Goode Family is a new animated series from Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Beavis and Butt-head, Office Space), John Altschuler & Dave Krinsky (King of the Hill, Blades of Glory).
It's a show about a family that's gone green, or at least trying to.
the family that lives by "What Would Al Gore Do?"
Oh, this is going to be a winner.

I try not to think about it too much. When I do I look at it this way. It's almost June. June, July, and August leaves us 3 three months to "get cracking" in this country. Those are some of the most productive month for construction, infrastructure improvements, etc. Nothing is happening. Business is slow and construction is way down. When September comes everything starts to slow down even more. That means this Fall and Winter are going to be far worse than last year for my finances.

Yikes...
General Motors Corp. said Friday that it has borrowed an additional $4 billion from the Treasury Department, meaning the automaker has now accepted $19.4 billion in loans from the U.S. government.
GM started taking government money in December and said it intended to borrow $2.6 billion more by June 1 and an additional $9 billion after that. But in a regulatory filing Friday, GM said it needed $1.4 billion sooner than originally forecast.
I'm starting to think I'm Carl Sagan after reading these numbers. Billions and billions.

98 | Fierce Guppy Sat, May 23, 2009 1:22:52am |
Have you ever seen something so evil that it causes you fantasize about kicking out the villain's teeth or something worse. I react that way when I see a grave injustice done to innocent people, especially to kiddies. Here's an ABC news item that I initially saw on New Zealand television earlier today. It's about charlatans in the Democratic Republic of Congo making a bundle of ill-gotten money by masquerading as Christian priests who go around accusing the little kiddies of superstitious crazed parents of being witches, and about the physical and emotional pain that ensues.
The director of a special commission charged with protecting children says it is illegal to accuse children of witchcraft unless there's proof. The interviewer responds with "But.. but that seems to indicate that there could ever be physical proof of witchcraft." and is told that witchcraft is apart of their traditional beliefs. The director is not ~just~ a fat-arsed do-nothing state official. He actually believes the crap himself. Yes, he believes a child is possibly a witch if he has black eyes, big eyes, or a bulging tummy...
Fat, useless voodoo-sodden piece of shit brick in the wall.
The hurt and the anguish seems never to leave that country. Anyway, I just wanted to post this as a way of letting off steam. See you later.
Tony.

Compare how Texans/flyover state types are treated in King of the Hill versus Family Guy or American Dad. McFarlane unambiguously hates southerners and it's reflected in his condescending humor. If anything, King of the Hill is more of an affectionate tweak towards Texans.
Also some curiously moving moments involving gun-nut, conspiracy-theorist and bargain-bin exterminator Dale Gribble and his belatedly faithful wife, Nancy.

Blog posts on GM's current situation:
I have not blogged much in the last week on the Obama takeover of GM, but you can take all my old Chrysler posts and just substitute “GM” for “Chrysler” and you will have it pretty much straight. Having gotten away with hammering secured creditors in favor of the UAW at Chrysler, Obama is setting the same course at GM.
Statism Failing: Taxpayer Losses in GM and Chrysler Debacles Continue to Mount
Chrysler’s bankruptcy, and what looks to be the impending bankruptcy of government-run General Motors, are getting ever more bizarre and outrageously expensive. Two pics will demonstrate.
Here We Go Again: This Time Gov’t. Is Trying to Shaft Unsecured GM Bondholders
Earlier today, I noted in a post updating the sad situations at bankrupt Chrysler and headling-for-bankruptcy General Motors, that GM is, according to a Wednesday Reuters report, offering secured bondholders a much better deal than the 29 cents on the dollar Chrysler’s secured creditors have been offered. Chrysler’s “non-TARP secured lenders,” after what they allege with much evidential support was a campaign of threats and intimidation by President Obama and the White House, abandoned their efforts to have their first-lien rights recognized in bankruptcy court.

Illegal and very scary. For all the Dems that were running around screaming about Bush's illegal this and illegal that, how about intimidation tactics by a legally-educated POTUS interfering with creditor's rights - all for a company that should have declared bankruptcy months ago, and spared the country billions in wasted bailouts?
Disgusting.
And, with that, I must go to sleep. Big morning, and I'm supposed to be up in 4 hours to go out to breakfast. oops!

And now I've got 2 cats.
Sure cats are strange, toxic little critters, (although a puncture type wound is much worse than a slash....the easier it bleeds the less likely it is to go septic) but i wouldn't have a house without one.
We were very lucky, our current cat was a shelter kitty, but she is VERY tolerant of my little kids... Not likely to lash out unless they are actually hurting her....win/win

I checked the zoo website. One would think that a zoo website would be designed to attract visitors. You have to hunt to find out that this one is in Manitoba. I suppose you have to click a link or something to find out little details like what city in which to look, but there are no less than SIX (6) ways to donate money or buy memberships on that page. I guess you can tell where the promoters' minds are most connected.
Cute babies, though.

good morning lizardia! The baby camel is too cute for words, Charles, thanks!
As this thread is about animals, I have a favor to ask of all of you. It's about birds. I've started to pay attention to them, primarily because they wake me up. At 5 am. On the dot. Without fail. There is always one bird that starts to sing (if that's the right word) and then they all go nuts.
Until 5:30 and everything goes silent.
At 6 they take off - to look for food I guess.
This never changes - I['ve been paying attention since February.
I know LGF has readers/posters from around the world. If any of you can tell me how the birds where you live behave in the morning I'd love to know (I'm in Alexandia Virginia)
Thanks in advance - nic is blue

Birds kind of float around me un-noticed. Sorry.
I did find a chicken in my garage once. A live chicken. A live (HUGE) chicken. Had several chickens wandering through the neighborhood (must've flown the coop). Called animal control.
There were two news vans in the neighborhood within an hour...was a pretty funny light story on the news that night.
Chickens in a gated community. Was pretty funny.
They wanted to interview me, but I've heard that the camera adds ten pounds. They had more than one camera.

Lucky you. I've got fucking coyotes in my front yard at about 6:30 most mornings. I can't even go get the newspapers without taking my gun. We have way too many deer and the state won't cull them - so now we have a coyote population explosion.

Ha! I got a better one....
When my ex was a kid, her family used to raise chickens in the back yard. This was in the City of Chicago before it became a People's Socialist City-State, mind you...anyhow, she had a certain chicken which she was fond of.
One day she came home to dinner, which was chicken noodle soup. She asked her mother where her favorite chicken was, and her mother replied "She's in the soup." From that day forward, she HATED chicken and anything chicken-flavored.
Fast forward to 1989, where she visited our home in MIchigan, about four months after she kicked me out, trying to "save our marriage" (more like a scouting mission to determine my parents' assets, which her attorney went after). A couple of hours before she started an argument with my parents, which ultimately culminiated in my dad driving her sorry ass back to Chicago, we all had dinner. It was Rice-A-Roni and hot dogs, which she found delicious.
Oh, we forgot to tell her it was chicken-flavored....

Hi Hoops, glad to hear it! I just posted in the spinoff links that President Obama has :
urged Americans to pay tribute to veterans on Memorial Day, saying the nation all too often has "failed to live up to that responsibility."In his weekly radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama said people can honor veterans by sending a letter or care package to troops overseas, volunteering at health clinics or taking supplies to a homeless veterans center. He said it could also mean something as simple as saying "thank you" to a veteran walking by on the street.
"We have a responsibility to serve all of them as well as they serve all of us," Obama said. "And yet, all too often in recent years and decades, we, as a nation, have failed to live up to that responsibility. We have failed to give them the support they need or pay them the respect they deserve.
I did a little editorializing in the spinoff links about that!

President’s Detention Plan Tests American Legal Tradition
There are, to be sure, already some legal tools that allow for the detention of those who pose danger: quarantine laws as well as court precedents permitting the confinement of sexual predators and the dangerous mentally ill. Every day in America, people are denied bail and locked up because they are found to be a hazard to their communities, though they have yet to be convicted of anything.
Clue....
Terrorism is not a legal problem.

I have to be honest here. Memorial Day always left me confused as a kid. Why? Because my grandmother went and put flowers on the graves of relatives: parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles, at several different cemeteries. But to my knowledge, none of them were ever in any branch of military service. I'm not sure why she did that.

That was
West’s NBA career was highly successful. Playing the guard position as a professional, he was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams, was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times, and was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the All-Star game in 1972, the same year that he won his single NBA championship ring. He is the all-time NBA record holder of points-averaged during a playoffs series (46.3) and, as a testament to his two-way play, a member of the first four NBA All-Defensive Teams which were introduced when he was 32 years old. Having played in nine NBA Finals, he is also the only player in NBA history to have won the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award despite being on the losing team (1969). West was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 and voted as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history in 1996. His left-handed dribbling silhouette has long been used in the NBA's official logo.
Just so you youngin's will know who he was! LOL!

Jerry West is the model for the NBA logo. 'Nuff said! I have a great Jerry West story. When I was about 9 or 10 years old, I was at a shopping mall in my hometown of Brockton, MA. There was a department store named Bradlees at one end of the mall. I told my mom I was going to look at the sporting goods and took off. When I got to the sporting goods area, Jerry West was sitting BY HIMSELF with a stack of photos (Regent Sports was the sponsor) and not a soul was around him. I recognized him immediately and was absolutely speechless! He signed a picture (which I still have more than 40 years later). I remember not having the courage to even speak! Can you imagine such a scene happening in this day and age? I remember it vividly.

Agreed. I was just sharing something that confused me growing up.
Part of me thinks it would also be good to go to the families today who have lost loved ones in the forces and tell them how much it means to me that one of their own was willing to sacrifice his life so that I could stay free. To me, that would have more meaning than putting flowers on someone's grave. The flowers are good and deserving; please don't get me wrong. But I think the families that are left behind need to see that love and appreciation even more. They will be struggling this weekend, I would think.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead" (Source: Duke University's Historic American Sheet Music, 1850-1920). While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I can't imagine that happening in this day and age - I mean an NBA STAR signing autographed photos.........
for FREE!
That would have been a thrill for me too, even though I was a Knicks fan!
But the most amazing thing was that he was sitting there BY HIMSELF! No rep from the store or the sporting goods company, no PR escort, NOBODY. In Brockton, MA of all places! He could not have been further from LA than that. I will never forget that experience.

Well, that's an old debate about all sports, isn't it? Every generation kids get bigger, stronger and faster; have coaching at earlier ages than ever before, etc. etc.
But I'm telling ya, if you could "adjust" for those differences, at least 2/3rds of the guys playing pro sports these days would be doing something else for a living!
speed has dramatically changed football in the last twenty tears or so....not downfield receivers but linebackers and especially defensive line...they can flat out motor nowdays...size of the offensive lines is another huge factor

re: #263 Fat Bastard Vegetarian Well y'all know that I honor all of our veterans and all our currently serving military personnel, but that's saved for Veterans Day; Memorial Day is to honor those who gave their lives in the service of our nation.
Not surprisingly, Memorial Day isn't such a big deal down South here, as it was originally developed as a day to honor those who fought for the Union during the Civil War.
Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 25 in 2009). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military action.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around GOTC's silent departure and her rush to embrace of the cretins over at 2.0. She didn't offer even a single word of explanation or a goodbye, after four years of posting here and praying for our families and loved ones. I just can't seem to get past it, it's so grievous and hurtful.
There are plenty of Christian blogs out there, if she wanted to engage in more conservative conversation... why that place? Where so many of us are savaged and attacked on a daily basis by the participants?
A lot of us here trusted her, appreciated her example, and considered her to be a faithful friend. I wonder if she understands just how much she has hurt people with this? She is now embracing the people who call me a whore and worse, and I take that very personally.
It's going to take me a while to get over what she did... if I ever do.

Good morning! Actually size and speed and athletic ability have all "grown" in all pro sports over the past 30 years or so; Hell, Alex Karras (regrettably best remembered as "Mongo" in Blazing Saddles), was an ALL -PRO defensive tackle at all of 240 lbs or so!

Cheney's new book: 'I'm right, you're wrong'
Do I smell money in the air?As expected, Cheney is now seeking to sign a lucrative book deal to tell all to the American people -- you know, the people he used to hide information from when he was vice president.
Cheney is something the left doesn't understand, like our military men and women.

On people leaving LGF, not going to anti LGF sites, but simply leaving.
This place use to be an incredible resource. The comments section was like a sweet pool of sanity in a dark dark world. I was offline for a few years and when I got back online here recently I discovered that the thousand comment threads here were 90% silliness.
Sillliness is fine, but when it is the dominant part of nearly every comment thread, it makes LGF little more than a quick meaningless chat at the water cooler.

re: #287 justdanny

Gisha produced that little award winner ( / ).
Gisha is an Israeli not-for-profit organization, founded in 2005, whose goal is to protect the freedom of movement of Palestinians, especially Gaza residents. Gisha promotes rights guaranteed by international and Israeli law.
Since the 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, Israel's military has developed a complex system of rules and sanctions to control the movement of the 3.4 million Palestinians who live there. The restrictions violate the fundamental right of Palestinians to freedom of movement. As a result, additional basic rights are violated, including the right to life, the right to access medical care, the right to education, the right to livelihood, the right to family unity and the right to freedom of religion.
Gisha, whose name means both "access" and "approach," uses legal assistance and public advocacy to protect the rights of Palestinian residents. Because freedom of movement is a precondition for exercising other basic rights, Gisha’s work has a multiplier effect in helping residents of the occupied territories access education, jobs, family members and medical care.

I happen to think that humor and levity are extremely valuable things, in a world that is increasingly gone mad. When you add this humor and levity to intellegent discussion you have something that is far, far more than a "quick meaningless chat at the water cooler"... you have a refuge from the madness on the outside.
I prefer LGF just the way that it is, and I hope that it never changes.

Ah, is that going to be an interactive (i.e., with comments) blog?
I'm doing ok my friend. Just had a scare this past Monday when my mom's doc said she thought my mom had had a "very tiny stroke" - further investigation by a qualifed doctor proved that she had not (just took meds - a bunch of 'em - in the order prescribed by her "stroke" doctor) and they collectively made her very dizzy and lightheaded. But it was (and to a smaller degree everyday still is) SCARY for me and for mom for a while there.

Greetings from Boulder!
The flight went well; and a few of you were kind enough to drop me an email telling me to be careful, with my bad heart I could easily get into trouble nearly 6000 feet above sea level. Thank you! And you bet no one is more worried about my health than ME. But if I didn't think I couldn't handle it, I wouldn't be here. (I also have supplimental oxygen perscribed by my doctor!)
I've really got to hand it to my friends out here - they've been supportive every step of the way, from offers to carry my O2 - not needed, the supplier delivered it to the hotel! - to an offer of a wheelchair and the unlimited services of someone to push me around. And all this for a guy who doesn't have any "pull" and can't donate a million dollars, but who just wants to come and help out and have fun with his friends. These people are the best!
Monday we'll put nine runners in the Bolder Boulder - nine people who have undergone a total of SIXTEEN heart operations! (and if you count me on the sidelines, add three more operations!) Because we want to prove that you can live a great life even if you were born with a bad heart.
So if you are in the race or are watching from the sidelines, give a shout to anyone wearing a broken heart T-shirt!

I'm bolding the part that has a lot to do with this. We have a much larger population than before. And each time someone new comes in, it changes the dynamic, just because people are different. That's neither good nor bad. It just is.

In all honesty Ive been looking around the net for a new site to recharge my engines at. LGF is an amazing resource still, but for me to have to sit on a thread for hours to sift out the valuable comments is more of a chore than I choose to carry out. When I start getting silly when what I want is to go to war, I have to drag myself back on task.

The problem is that people get nostalgic for an LGF that probably never existed. In the early days of the blogosphere it was all fresh new and exciting. LGF has changed but not that much. If anything it's become more focused on reality which is less sensationalistic and people who need the hysteria and conspiracy theories are going to be very bored here.
I think the fact checking has slipped a little among the lizards lately but it will come back.

Good morning Kenneth - hope you and yours are well today! Y'all might want to check the spinoff links above where I posted that (and did some editorializing of my own!)!
Remember this gem from a year ago?
On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.

Justdanny, the other thing is that the topics have changed. Before, we were squarely concerned about islamofascism and terrorists attacks. While those things still exist, they aren't front and center anymore.
We are, after all, dependent on what Charles posts in order to determine topic discussions. And it's his blog; he has the right to post his preferred topics, where the wind blows him.

re: #327 Killgore Trout
The problem is that people get nostalgic for an LGF that probably never existed. In the early days of the blogosphere it was all fresh new and exciting. LGF has changed but not that much. If anything it's become more focused on reality which is less sensationalistic and people who need the hysteria and conspiracy theories are going to be very bored here.
I think the fact checking has slipped a little among the lizards lately but it will come back.
As some folks leave (either through being blocked or self-exile), and new people come on, the "personality" of the group as a whole changes.
People who left and and are now back, looking for the same "personality" of the place that existed when they left - are going to find it is different, different people, different viewpoints.
It's just how it is. Might be a good idea for people to just jump in and try to enjoy what actually IS than to long for what USED TO BE.

Give us this day Hors d'ouvres in bed
And forgive us from those who have dressed up against us

For wine is a shingle

The Evangelical community in particular is heavily into marketing Christian products and earning profit. It's all part of the whole "prosperity gospel" that is preached and promoted by the Evangelical churches 24/7.
A lot of Christians feel the need to buy all kinds of cheap and expensive geegaws to display their faith to the world, for some odd reason, and the merchants who sell everything from pencils to bookmarkers to bracelets to plaques to paintings to books to jewelry are more than happy to exploit them. Slap the word "Jesus" or "God" on something, include a clever little poem or a fish, and Christians will buy it.
I think that Jesus had people like this in mind when he drove the money changers out of the temple.

Good morning from the Adirondacks. Cloudy day here, temps in the low 70's. This is the opening of the tourist season, you can already see the increase in traffic. Not that objectionable, we just avoid the commercial areas, so it's still good times.
Something I wanted to share, got 2 more of our adoptees rotating home. Just in time for the holiday.
I'm just SO damn proud of these people, hard to express it.

Perfect. I come in here today stinky wearing my once official LGF colors and people growl. Its cool. We're good. I can fight beside ya'll. Tell me I smell though and really, honestly, will we be cool then?
I'm cool.
Part of it is LGF is high profile now. Charles doesn't want to be associated with anything untoward, and we have to respect our host in that matter.
We've had two major fault lines develop since the old days. The neo-nazis picking up the anti-jihad flag, and the creationistism issue. Both those changed the mix at LGF. (for the better IMHO).

BEIJING — Chen Fuchao, a man heavily in debt, had been contemplating suicide on a bridge in southern China for hours when a passer-by came up, shook his hand — and pushed him off the ledge.
[Link: www.foxnews.com...]
"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interest," Lai was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Muslims have been staging violent protests over alleged Quran mistreatment in Greece the past few days. As we saw with the Mo'toon riots a few years ago, this tends to create backlash.

8 years a ago in Seattle...
Commuters' mood turns ugly as suicide try snarls I-5 traffic
Passing motorists, Metro bus passengers and truck drivers hurled insults and urged a distraught woman to jump from her perch on the railing of the Interstate 5 Ship Canal Bridge Tuesday morning.Police rushed to the scene to try to talk the 26-year-old Tacoma-area woman out of attempting suicide. But as the region's busiest freeway disintegrated into a massive traffic jam, the mood of some commuters grew ugly.
"People were yelling, 'Jump, bitch, jump!'" Seattle Police Department spokesman Clem Benton said. "Now who wants to hear that in this type of a situation?"
Not quite a push, but damn close.

I've followed the NBA since 1966 and that was probably the most clutch shot I have ever seen. Not only was the game on the line, but the Cavs' season was on the line, the morale of an entire state was on the line, and ABC's ratings for the NBA Finals were on the line. LeBron is indescribable!
You argue a good case, but game-winning shots, even three-pointers, are not all that rare, must be, I dunno, several per year league-wide.
I recall one in the Lakers' dark days, Nick Van Exel made a last-second 35-foot shot to beat the Celtics in the last game played in the old stadium, then was smothered by a laughing Vlade Divacs.
Also, I've heard comparisons of players like Kobe to Michael Jordan, in terms of how many of these game-winners they've made in their careers. OK, this list includes free-throws and stuff, but even so.

1) Are there others who consult in your business? Call and see what they are charging.
2) Otherwise - are there salaried "experts" in your field? What do they make? If what you have is an annual figure, divide it by 2080 (# work hours in a year for those who work a 40-hour/week workwee) to arrive at an hourly rate.
2) Are you going to charge by hours worked or by work produced?

Unless you're providing material goods (brochures, power points, etc) it's mostly billed hourly. Your time researching as well as actually sitting down and discussing whatever it is your consulting about. Now, as to the hourly rate, that depends on your
A)expertise
B)geography (you can charge more in say New York City than you could in North Platte Nebraska for instance
$25 an hour is a good base

3) I asked the prospect to shoot off 10 things he wants from me, whether technical/specific questions answers, conceptual discussions, email chains, documents, or if I'm on retainer and he can just call me for an hour a week. It might be some combination of all.
Good questions Reine.

2) I don't know what they charge, but I'm trying to find out. All the best known consultants are close to the owner of my organization, so I can't ask too many questions without being found out. Not the end of the world if I am, but not ready to go there yet.
3) I asked the prospect to shoot off 10 things he wants from me, whether technical/specific questions answers, conceptual discussions, email chains, documents, or if I'm on retainer and he can just call me for an hour a week. It might be some combination of all.
Good questions Reine.
I don't know what you do or where you live, but there is salary information here, US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Hunt around, may be other good info. there too.
Whatever state you live in also will have a Dept of Labor or something similar, that should have state job and career and salary information.

Morning, all. I'm afraid I have some sad news. After a long and brave fight against breast cancer, my sister passed away peacefully yesterday afternoon. She was only 55. She and her husband celebrated their 25th anniversary in March and their son is just 19 years old. She was the warmest, most generous person you could ever meet and I'm going to miss her very much. I would very much appreciate your prayers for the family.
Done.

Thanks RW! My current employer (well, the owner of the company) probably wouldn't mind, but recent company politics makes it a little sensitive subject for the time being. All in all, he would probably not mind assuming I didn't give away company assets or ideas or reduce my bandwidth for him. I'm pretty sure he'd trust me on that, and my prospective client would not respect me if I started feeding him obvious company documents or memos and charged him for providing them.
I'm in the residential audio/video/automation industry; we design build all electronic systems in luxury homes. The person who wants consulting has a company but wants to take it to the next level. They are in another country so not a direct competitor.

Thank you all so much. Your prayers and kind thoughts are like a big virtual hug. The whole thing is such an emotional train wreck. My son and his girlfriend arrived yesterday to spend the holiday weekend with us and we were all so happy to be together. Of course there's nothing that could be done, but I feel terrible that our first long visit with the girlfriend (who is a doll, by the way) is overshadowed by this loss. We are figuring out if we can make the trip for the funeral. And to top it all off, my youngest daughter's birthday is Wednesday, which will either be the day of or the day after the funeral. The whole thing is a very bizarre mix of sorrow and joy.
Anyway, thanks again for letting me unload on a bunch of strangers who are really very dear friends. You all mean so much to me.

Big Papa - you already, then, have an idea of what your work is worth.
Suggest you figure out your current hourly rate - and then consider charging that amount for your "consulting", since this is your first job.
Be prepared to negotiate the rate, if they say it's too high.

Anybody work in the consulting business? I'm being asked to consult and don't know how to valuate my time or output. I'll figure something out, but anybody.... want to consult on consulting?
BP, I've done all sorts of consulting and contracting. How to value your time? That's easy, just split the difference between what you're worth, and what you think you're worth!
Seriously, I could bloviate on this all day. Big name consultants get big bucks just for showing up, no-name consultants generally (but not always) have to actually work for the money.
And it depends so much on the specifics.
Contracting - is just doing at an hourly rate, what would otherwise be a salaried job. Then you just figure the dollars per hour the job goes for on salary, and charge that, or maybe 20% more to cover benefit and holidays not offered to the contractor, and there ya go.
OTOH, if you have the one and only secret that the business needs to make an extra billion dollars, then you charge them half a billion dollars for the consult.
Hope that helps!

Most Lizards know that I was laid off 5 years ago from a long lasting full time job as a programmer, and I have not been able to get a full time IT job since. I have had a number of short term contracting jobs, but I always run in to the same problem.
I get work down fast, under budget and before deadlines, and that doesn't bode well with the contracting firms. And yes, I'm talking about everything from 1 man contracting shops to major players in the Denver area.
I care too much about the work I do, and I can't milk my job.
Currently, I have one small project that I have been maintaining for Kaiser (through a contractor), which bring in a few grand a year. This works out because I am the only person on the project (except for the project leader) and the platform I am working in is not the contractors normal programming environment. So, I am king of the hill on this project, and they let me take the lead.
Personally, except for the Kaiser project, I have never seen or worked for a contacting firm that is anything but a money pit for their clients.
I can't stand contracting work.

Sorry - real life intervened. I'd advise you to consider that consulting is just that; there are no benefits of any kind and the $25 an hour you get from your employer probably doesn't include the cost of health insurance, certainly vacation pay, paid sick days and etc.
When I was practising law, I did some real estate consulting (business-wise) and charged about $50 an hour more than my hourly rate at the law firm I was a partner in; and got - in writing - consent of my partners to go ahead and do the consulting work.

Condolences to you and your family. My mother died of breast cancer at 61, ten years before Jackie Onassis died of the non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Sometimes you just can't stop it, regardless. Sometimes all you can do is appreciate the life you had and the good you did. Eventually, all of us will join her.
Thanks, legalpad. My condolences on the loss of your mother. I am very seriously thinking about doing the 3-day walk in October in my sister's memory.

From the link; Obama once again intends to talk about others, winds up speaking in reference to himself.
Obama said he was committed to giving troops the training and equipment they need and making certain the Veterans Affairs Department had the money it needed. He also noted that he had signed a bill into law that would eliminate waste in defense projects and was working to improve the economy so that veterans can find a good job, provide for their families and earn a college degree.
"That is what Memorial Day is all about," Obama said. "It is about doing all we can to repay the debt we owe to those men and women who have answered our nation's call by fighting under its flag. It is about recognizing that we, as a people, did not get here by accident or good fortune alone."

Actually, they're: butter, sour cream, mayonnaise, and cheese.

True. Since this is my first job, I'll take training wages. If I'm as effective as I think I can be (and this turns into more work), I can charge more.
Funny thing is, it is sort of a hobby. I participate in a private industry forum for my vocation/profession, and my opinionated and impassioned statements are what caused this person to pursue me to consult for them.
Seeing somebody else succeed would be awesome. Making a few bucks on top of that would be icing on the cake and enable other hobbies such as collecting and drinking old rotten grape juice and whacking little white balls into lakes and ocean inlets around my locale.

It's not likely we'll have another one, with DNA testing.

I'm so glad that when I go to a Seahawks or Mariners game I-90 let's me out right there at the stadiums. I drove in SoCal for 14 years and the Seattle I-5, I-90 drivers are idjits compared to the pros on the freeways around LA and San Diego!

re: #681 Irish Rose
Folks, I'm back briefly.
I think I've decided that I'd like to go ahead a reassemble the LGF prayer list. It's an important list for a lot of us here, and I'm more than happy to volunteer to be the new keeper.
Does anyone have a copy of her last prayer list, and would anyone like me to add to the new one?
You can post it here or email, my nic is blue.
Irish Rose, thank you. That's a lovely idea. I've already got an entry for you here.

re: #669 pingjockey Good morning ping! Um, actually Memorial Day is to honor those veterans who have died in the service of our nation.
But going up to active duty types and thanking them for their service (and buying 'em lunch or a beer or whatever is certainly encouraged!).

re: #686 Walter L. Newton
FYI - Realwest said up thread he was going to maintain it.
It doesnt really matter which one of us does it, only that we keep it going. My son is still serving in harms' way and I want to make sure that he is covered in prayer by friends.
RW? Realwest?

More and more, our WWII heroes are leaving this life. The greatest generation will be gone for good. I pray its memory never gets co-opted by the left.
And it won't as long as WE don't let it be co-opted by the LEFT.

One thing they did do pretty well, freeway access to the stadiums.

Hey doppelganglander - I've already updated The List to include FBV and your sad loss, but would appreciate you're providing her first name for The List.
706 | Irish Rose Sat, May 23, 2009 9:32:02am |
I'm grateful that the prayer list was saved, it burns me considerably that it was tossed aside and abandoned by the previous "keeper" like some worn out old soccer ball.

re: #706 Irish Rose
Um, actually it wasn't. For some reason I had trouble copying and pasting the three parts so I e-mailed her and she sent it to me as a Word document attachement.
708 | Irish Rose Sat, May 23, 2009 9:34:09am |
Realwest, if something happens or you feel like you can't monitor the list for a while due to a temporary setback, please email me right away and I'll keep it in your absence.

Thank you very much Irish Rose! I'm thinking of e-mailing it to you just in case - are you at the same e-mail addy and if not, could you e-mail me with your new one?
It doesn't much matter to me who keeps it, but as I said I've already updated it and intend to publish it as comments on Memorial Day.
Thanks again!

Mwahahaha! BTW, got another email from Lee Technologies about a job in Redmond. The problem is you have to be able to get to the site in 2 hours of being called in! Still haven't heard anything about the Quincy job, yet! The are the facilities management corp for Microsoft.

Thanks muchly. If the job in Redmond didn't entail being on call on off days I'd consider moving myself there and going home on days off. Haven't heard back about that yet. Oh well, thinking positive thoughts here.

Oh Noes Charles! Not another insanely cute baby animal thread! As a long time reader with 3 posts over the past 4 years, I must insist the Comnist Obama is plotting the ruin of the Amerikkkan banking system, and Islamic infiltrators are peeking over my hedge, so isn`t it time you put aside your petty differences with ugly baby animals and support them too? Or maybe a thread about the need to return to the gold standard and a picture of a homely naked mole rat or his cousin?
