Saturday Night Music: Elvis Costello, ‘Secret, Profane And Sugarcane’

Music • Views: 3,435

This is a cool little widget Amazon makes available to “associates,” an MP3 sampler that lets you listen to tracks from a recommended album. Elvis Costello’s new record is one I highly recommend; a collection of acoustic performances with many amazing musicians contributing.

WASHINGTON – For three decades, accused spies Walter Kendall Myers and his wife shuffled secrets to their Cuban contacts in such fear of being caught, authorities say, that he memorized top-secret documents rather than bring them into their home.

Their downfall came simply and swiftly, lured by a stranger who offered Myers a cigar.

Obama administration officials say Kendall Myers had access to highly sensitive material while working for the State Department's intelligence arm, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has ordered a damage assessment of what the couple may have revealed. Their methods of communicating with the Cubans included Morse code on shortwave radio, changing shopping carts at the grocery store and a face-to-face meeting with President Fidel Castro himself, court documents say.

David Kris, assistant attorney general for national security, described the couple's alleged spying for the communist government as "incredibly serious."

SNIP

Court documents indicate the couple received little money for their efforts, but instead professed a deep love for Cuba, Castro and the country's system of government. The couple was planning a sailing trip to Cuba, which Myers considered "home."

The documents say Castro came to visit the couple in a small house in Cuba where they were staying in 1995, after traveling through Mexico under false names. Kendall Myers reportedly boasted to the undercover FBI agent that they had received "lots of medals" from the Cuban government.

When a tooth gets a deep cavity and infection they sometimes have to remove the soft tissue including nerves inside a tooth to fix it. They drill in, then bore out the soft tissue. They back-fill the excavation and the tooth is in reality dead afterwards, but will stay in place many years.

31 itellu3times  Sat, Jun 6, 2009 7:34:38pm

PBS is of course loathsome anymore, but they have on some kind of 50s revival, they rounded up Patti Page, The Four Aces, The Crewcuts, had them record their original hits - and lordy, it sounds great! Obviously the music has been processed, but screw that, the songs are great, and through the magic of modern audio engineering, the singers still sound great!

Wonder when this was recorded, probably a few years ago, but I'm just seeing it for the first time.

You can try again later, but the ding may not accrue until I wake up tomorrow. Just so you know.

How did 100,000,000 women disappear?

Two researchers crunching population statistics have confirmed an unsettling reality. Siwan Anderson and Debraj Ray noticed the ratio of women to men in developing regions and in some cultures is suspiciously below the norm

In India, China and sub-Saharan Africa, millions upon millions of women are missing. They are not lost, but dead: victims of violence, discrimination and neglect.

What the hell is a root canal? What is it and why do it?
Sorry Sir

Each tooth in your mouth has a central portion that contains blood vessels and a nerve. The nerve in the tooth is connected to a larger nerve ( or nerves ) that run in the bone below ( or above as the case may be ). When a that nerve gets "irritated" ( from decay, infection, trauma, etc ) it starts to hurt. To stop the pain, dentists will drill thru the top of the tooth and remove the nerve from that central portion of your tooth and and there bye amputating it also from the larger nerve trunk. That controls the toothache. Then that central portion ( canals ) have to be cleaned, widened, and filled. That in a nutshell is a root canal.

It's honestly not nearly as bad a procedure as it sounds. And the tooth will often be OK for years.

Except for me.
Here's what happens to me -
tooth breaks, get a crown. Big bucks.
the nerve gets irritated, need a root canal. More big bucks.
By this point, the tooth has cost me close to $2000.
then the root cracks, nothing can be done, extraction.

I don't actually mind the cost. My teeth are just strange - enamel never adhered properly, apparently, it's just sitting on the tooth.

But I do have a mouthful of $4000 teeth.
They're pretty, though.

Back away, go to the grocery store (seems to be what I end up doing), then come back later when you're calm.

You've got to figure out the reason you're here. If you're here (like I am) because I enjoy the superior knowledge and intellect of many of the folks who post here, then whether or not I draw the same conclusions they do, I'm gonna do whatever I need to in order to be able to hang around.

And if I need to get up and go to the grocery store, that's what I'll do.

Out of context:

Arthur is 90 years old. He’s played golf every day
since his retirement 25 years ago. One day he
arrives home looking downcast. “That’s it,” he tells
his wife. “I’m giving up golf. My eyesight has gotten
so bad that once I’ve hit the ball, I can’t see where
it went.”

His wife sympathizes and makes him a cup of tea.
As they sit down, she says, “Why don’t you take my
brother with you and give it one more try.”

“That’s no good,” sighs Arthur. “Your brother’s a
hundred and three. He can’t help.”

“He may be a hundred and three,” says the wife,
“but his eyesight is perfect.”

So the next day, Arthur heads off to the golf course
with his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty
swing, and squints down the fairway. He turns to the
brother-in-law. “Did you see the ball?”

“Of course I did!” replies the brother-in-law. “I have
perfect eyesight ..”

“Where did it go?” asks Arthur.

“I don’t remember."

Well I was a HUGE fan of Windows XP-PRO and had used it for a couple of years, but it died - seriously, three motherboards and two hard drives and Best Buy said "we'll give you as good a computer as this was when it was new." And given how desktop prices have dropped and because I'm just a swell guy, they actually gave me what amount to about $250 above what I had paid plus thier Black Tie in home hardware and software 3 year warranty. But I hadda take a VISTA. Am I glad I did. By the time I got to it, it had been on the market for about 18 months and had most bugs worked out of it. And as I said, it CAME with 5 Gigs Ram, DVD/CDR and all that jazz.

I have a linksys wrt54gs wireless. It was running just fine until for no reason, my favorite website (well, second favorite after LGF) suddenly became unreachable. I called my ISP and verified that it was not blocked at their end. So I reset the router to factory default, and SCREWED MYSELF because I could not refigure it to what it was. Finally I called their help desk and chatted with a young guy in Mumbai named Deepak who fixed the router and even unblocked the site I had trouble reaching.

Now I just have to update the Easy Link Advisor software that comes with the router.

The poor clerk tried to sell me a store warrenty that was priced at over half the unit cost.

I have the same model, I think there was a firmware update for it out on the web. Don't forget to go in and change the admin account password. A lot of people foolishly leave it "admin" and no password. You can hit it with your browser usually at 192.168.1.1 ....

Then only problem I am having lately is setting up a printer on my new laptop. Vista is not as easy as XP or 98. Those were so simple. This one is proving harder to figure out

"The poor clerk tried to sell me a store warrenty that was priced at over half the unit cost." LOL! Well a friend of mine who NOW (not of course when I needed a new computer) works in a computer store and says that their profit margin is SO much higher on Warranty than on machinery it's not even close.

Um, what? Sorry, techtard here! But does the machine you have now with Windows work well enough for you? Can you add RAM?

It has 1gig of ram installed in its single slot. I can and will swap it out for a 2gig stick in time. 2gigs will help XP run all that much better.

Bummer. Rain and cardboard aren't a good mix. This was back during the Apollo missions and we'd look up at the moon and awe while thinking, "there are men up there." Keeping the mirror clean was a always an enjoyable task.

Keeping the mirror clean. Absolutely. Did you have a little brush with a green rubber bulb attached to blow air without damaging those million-dollar optics? :)

Sure did. My dad always had something like that around. Or lens cleaning tissues.

Yep, a two Gig stick will help quite a bit and I was surprised at how cheap RAM has become over the years. My old XP desktop came with one and I added a two gig stick for about $75 - GREATLY improved performance.

Going totally off topic, but the "top links" story about Palin wanting Sotomayor to take an IQ test is bizarre. Say what you will about Sonia, and I've got real reservations about her willingness to put justice ahead of racial spoils, (see the New Haven fire department test case), she's bright.

College is an IQ test. It's an overly slow, complex, and expensive IQ test, but it does the job. Sotomayor scored high. Case closed.

re: #185 realwest

Nice, I just bought one a while ago that came with Vista. My old machine with XP on it just kept crapping parts so when the motherboard croaked, I gave it a proper burial. I'm glad I jumped up to Vista, I figured why not keep up with the latest MS operating system, it's easier this way than to try to keep up with replacing parts just to keep an XP machine running. I got the CD/DVD Lightscribe drive but I'm not real impressed with Lightscribe, it's slow and the results are not real impressive. Other than that, it's been a great machine. Mine has a 226 GB hard drive. It only has the one CD/DVD drive, but it does everything I need so I'm not going to mess with it.

I think we should apply the 48 hour rule. There's something about that story that doesn't add up. They're quoting Palin as saying "screwed up" and I've never heard her use those words before.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu have a Live CD feature that lets you boot into Linux from the CD without installing it onto the HD. Runs slow since it is from the CD, but you get a chance to see how it works, and they are free.

The neat thing about Ubunto and Kubuntu is they are already desktop ready distros, and come with lots of software most people would use already packaged.

just go to [Link: www.virtualbox.org...] install that, then create a virtual install of solaris, linux, windows, or mac os. sun owns virtualbox now i believe. you don't need an old desktop to do that. zfs is cool btw. has compression on the filesystem.

I have Puppy Linux on a stick, and am not happy with it, as it goes SO SLOW, and won't mount the host hardware HDD.

I couldn't get Ubuntu (which I have used since Badger) to boot off the stick, so it had to go for the time being. The advantage to this Puppy setup is it runs under QEMU, so I can boot the machine from the stick OR simply run QEMU.exe under windows, and VOILA! I'm at least in my own system with a network connection, but no access to the files on the HDD.

Oh well.

A couple of years ago, when it first went OS/Free, I tried to grab it off the server several times. Spent hours downloading, only to have it crap out at the end. Someday.

i have heard that it does. but it's not officially supported and is obviously not supported by Apple (illegal in other words, but there are places to find info about it). there is a OS X binary for virtualbox itself though that will let you run windows, linux, solaris x86 on OS X.

I saw Elvis on the first tour with the Attractions-- touring after that wonderful first album w/Clover, a Soma County band.

Any body know why there's a credit for Femme Fatale by Lou Reed on the liner notes, but no Velvets piece on the record?

I love the production. His voice is sometimes unsuited to the piece-- you know, that goony thing he does with vowels, sometimes-- but it's the best Elvis record I've heard in a long time.
