Please Post this video. This is GRAPHIC.
It is horrible but shows the ruthlessness of the Basij militia. They shoot and murder a girl who dies in her fathers arms...

Someday there will be a monument to these people, maybe in a park, and the children of Tehran will play around it, and not really understand. Not until they are older.

It is important for everyone in the West to understand what kind of a brutal, repressive regime is currently in power in Iran. Hopefully the sacrifice of those opposing the Mullahs will not be in vain.

Why is that we have to watch the murder of innocent martyrs over and over?
This regime, is not going to lay down. These martyrs are sacrificing their lives to let the world know they are being

What needs to happen, is
The whole rest of the western world needs to join hands with their governments and demand that the Iranian government STOP this bloodshed NOW.

I wish there was more we could do to help those protesting in their quest for freedom. Apparently all we can do is continue to bear witness, voice our support, pray/hope for them, and let them know they will not be forgotten.

One thing is for certain, there is no way of successfully negotiating with those currently in power within Iran. They have been forced to step into the light and we can clearly see their dark intentions. Who could doubt they will acquire nuclear weapons and have ill intentions? Those holding onto power in Iran are very bad, very dangerous and need to be stopped by someone.

This was an effective weapon against President Bush as he all but stopped golfing during the war as there were kids dying in the desert. The double standard from the lamestream media is nauseating. The Teleprompter Jesus can pretty much do as he please and not be called on it, whether it is taking his wife out on the town (NYC, nice to have helicopters at your disposal huh?) or sending AF1 on a 1500 foot flyover of NYC at a cost of $350,000 just to get a fucking picture. Somehow we will hear how 0 inherited this unrest in Iran.

100 The Left  Sat, Jun 20, 2009 2:54:43pm

NIAC (National Iranian-American Council) reports that Mousavi released an open letter to the Iranian people an hour ago:

It states that he stands with the people to protect the original aims of the revolution to reach human rights and democracy. He states that what they got instead was fraud, injustice, torture and lies. He states why he will not stand down and why all the security forces of Iran are brothers and sisters that should support the nation. He says the body charged with investigating the elections is not a neutral body. He calls on authorities to pull the security forces and Basij out of the streets and allow the people’s voices to be heard peacefully.

Witnessing is not enough. Unless we start picking up the phone and verbalizing our dismay and disgust to our representatives and congresspersons, and to OBAMA, nothing will be gained for Iran and those who are sacrificing their lives.

Speaking of which, I'll interrupt this discussion for a quick news update. I just came back from Trader Joe's. My travels took me close enough to a TJ's in about as extremely far-left a location as I could imagine, so I went.

There were no major signs of any unpleasantness. First I tried to buy some Israeli couscous, but that part of the shelf was empty. I wondered if someone had trashed all of it, or if the store had pulled it from the shelves, and I almost grabbed an employee to ask what the deal was. But then I found plenty of Israeli feta cheese and wine in their respective parts of the store. In fact, I think the Israeli wine was in the "captain's choice" section.

Now I have to figure out what I'm going to do with all this feta cheese and wine.

This tyrannical regime will not go easy.

In a lot of ways, this situation resembles Hungary in 1956 or the former Czechoslovakia in 1968.

The major difference being, of course, that if the mullahs can't suppress the revolt (which is what it is now), there's no Red Army waiting to ride to their rescue.

If they can't handle it themselves, it's curtains for them, and I think they know it. Which means they aren't likely to be shy about taking the gloves off.

149 Shr_Nfr  Sat, Jun 20, 2009 3:04:35pm

The White House makes small whimpering sounds. From TehranBureau:

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 20, 2009
Statement from the President on Iran

The Iranian government must understand that the world is watching. We mourn each and every innocent life that is lost. We call on the Iranian government to stop all violent and unjust actions against its own people. The universal rights to assembly and free speech must be respected, and the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.

As I said in Cairo, suppressing ideas never succeeds in making them go away. The Iranian people will ultimately judge the actions of their own government. If the Iranian government seeks the respect of the international community, it must respect the dignity of its own people and govern through consent, not coercion.

Martin Luther King once said – “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” I believe that. The international community believes that. And right now, we are bearing witness to the Iranian peoples’ belief in that truth, and we will continue to bear witness.

From source in Tehran: The police was present in force. The units of elite riot police, well armed with guns, tear gas, batons and shields were present from Enghelab sq. to Azadi sq. They were assisted by Tehran Police ordinary units and Basijis. I saw at least one unit equipped by motor bikes and police command vehicles going up and down Azadi st. to coordinate movements. They blocked all access to Azadi street connecting Azadi sq. to Enghelab sq. by station units at every major and minor juncture.

Then they cut off the street completely preventing people to gather and people already gathered to march. Choppers were giving cover to ground units and control their movements. Several thousands of people were scattered in streets and alleys and cannot enter Azadi St. to demonstrate. I saw two people who were beaten. Few people gathered because police was there from 3 PM preventing them from gathering. Several thousands were wandering between Azadi and Enghelab but there was no meeting point.

I think the government wants neither a massacre nor the marches to continue. Thus they organized their forces in order to prevent the assembly all together somehow without bloodshed. Today many demonstrators stepped in a well prepared situation and police took advantage of its best units and very well organized command and control system to checkmate them.

It's not confirmed exactly what it is, but it appears to be some kind of acid or chemical burn

It's an attempt to disperse crowds, but it's also meant to force them to seek medical attention at hospitals. There are reports that the police are waiting at hospitals to arrest people seeking treatment.

RT from Iran: People got skin burns from whatever it was pouring from copters in the streets..

Some types of riot gas (notably CS and Oloresin Capsicum) can cause skin irritation/burns (they're actually particulate smokes dispersed by burning, hence the term "Pepper Fog" for OC). If it came down in liquid form, it would be more likely to be an actual vesicant agent, intended specifically to burn.

/The latter would represent a very serious escalation, as such agents can be lethal if inhaled.

I say hold off on further speculation until more data is available.

No.

Although they have all the tools of oppression at their disposal, the mullahs must be a bit nervous right now. It's thoughtful of Obama to give them a bit of comic relief:

re: #171 Mike Nargizian
I'll try to answer using with my perception of the video

1. I'm in the street in a revolution. Hundreds of thousands of people in every direction. My friend next to me is shot and killed. My friends and I grab his dead body and begin to run with him. Panic, loss, fear, anger, shock. I might act exactly the same way. I see no issue with that behaviour myself.

2. Iran is populated with nearly 99% muslims. Allah Akbar is a saying everyone from devout extremists to not devout members of islamic culture use. A friend of mine in Iran wh is an atheist self identifys as a muslim. Because islamic culture does that to people. Saying allah akbar isnt a sign of an extremist. Its a sign of a religious or non religious member of an islamic society or culture.

3. Because somehow in your mind thats what you want? Thats my feeling. Its not an indictment, just my opinion based on your view of the situation. Its real. The scenes are real. Theres only one reality and it can be perceived in a multitude of ways. I believe people often see what they want to see.

Won-gin-sil-sin-ip-joo? (Or some such, I'm not sure)

No reason to go into the deep freezer Killgore. At this point, I think Obama is doing the right thing. If things explode I hope he has the stones to push all in.

Fareed Zakaria made an interesting observation that in this crises Obama resembles G HW Bush whose handling of eastern Europe was attacked but later proven to be successful.

Interesting. Thanks for posting that.

Nice catch. It appears to be soft serve. The MSM is calling it "frozen custard"!

Pretty much all ice cream is custard, from a culinary viewpoint.

You might get more traction if you can find out how much transfat was in the serving.

re: #129 eon

In a lot of ways, this situation resembles Hungary in 1956 or the former Czechoslovakia in 1968.

The major difference being, of course, that if the mullahs can't suppress the revolt (which is what it is now), there's no Red Army waiting to ride to their rescue.

If they can't handle it themselves, it's curtains for them, and I think they know it. Which means they aren't likely to be shy about taking the gloves off.

/This is going to get bloodier.

Just to add to your piece Mike. One of the several hundred comments posted after that video says ...

Her name is "Neda". ... Her father was shouting "Neda please stay! Neda don't be scared!"

The commenter, who claims to be Persian continues:

Her name is not really that important. Her family name neither. What we are trying to convey is the killing of the innocent people by the "shitty rotten regime of Iran" at this moment...
And her name is "NEDA"

My condolences to Neda's father, mother, family, friends...

I think the demise of the theocracy looks inevitable, it's just a question of how long it will take and how many lives they will ruin in their struggle to remain in power. I'd hate to see them weather this crisis and prolong their tenure for years before succumbing to the inevitable, but it could happen, especially if the rest of the world's response remains limited to 'tut tut'.

Revolution is a very dangerous business and the majority fail. It can be worth it to try; our own nation is the fruit of the most successful revolution of all time. But the catalogue of failed revolutions is long, and successful revolutions that go bad are all too common: French, Russian, Iranian, Chinese, etc.

People of Iran, if you win your freedom, guard it well. Institutional safeguards are essential. No one body can be granted complete power.

The U.S. is, as George Washington put it, the friend and well wisher to liberty everywhere, but the champion and vindicator of our own. When we make exceptions, those exceptions are because our own vital national interests require it. We didn't wage war on Germany to free the Germans from Hitler. He declared war on us.

This may have been posted already, but here is a bit more about the young woman who ws shot:
via Harry's Place:

Basij shots to death a young woman in Tehran’s Saturday June 20th protests

At 19:05 June 20th
Place: Karekar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi st.

A young woman who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim’s chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes.
The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them, towards Salehi St.
The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me.
Please let the world know.

Re: Obama's Remarks of Today on Iran

If anyone has brought this up already, my apologies for the redundancy. I've been out all afternoon.

Having read the rather short and tepid remarks, the first thing I noticed was that he didn't use the words "democracy" or "freedom" once. Not once.

I think that fact, alone, speaks volumes. Doesn't the whole situation that is unfolding in Iran revolve around the concepts of Freedom and Democracy?

This administration is so clueless, it gets scarier by the minute.

I) 18 prostestres killed
II) 170 injured
III) 3 black dressed uniform dead
IV) about 40 rushed to hospitels all over the country
V) Easpahan, Teheran, even Kom Etc - night ruled by demontstrators
VI) loud call from roofs, balconies, open winsdwes apartment in main cities : "AllAh is Akbarr!" -meaning politecly : "we trust D-G allmighty, not yo fucking Mullhas!"

young creative Iranians invented a new form of protest - indoor demonstrations. No need to step up outside. Not even depend on Internet. Only use of natural human resource - freedom of speech (or shout, or whistle).

here you can see (mostly hear) sounds from Teheran's night:

A video from BBS - on the background of the shouting - a Persian women lamenting:

Obama calls on Iran to 'stop all violent and unjust actions'

Where have I heard that before......oh yeah, I remember:

"Gozer the Gozerian... good evening. As a duly designated representative of the City, County and State of New York, I order you to cease any and all supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension."

"That oughta do it. Thanks very much, Ray. "

Hopefully this will eventually end with ayatollas being ran out of Iran and maybe even killed. They're the cause of most of the terorrism and death in the middle east today.
