I have one question for him, and one question alone...

"Was it really worth it, dude?"

This guy leaves his job for a few days to dip his wick and thinks a quick apology is all he needs to do... wow...

My wife would have just shot me and removed the middle man...

John McCain whom Sanford supported in 1999 and 2000's Republican primary, should advise Sanford on how to do this and have your cake and eat it too.

10 Sharmuta  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 10:07:49am
The most serious is whether Sanford’s frame of mind will allow him to carry out his duties as governor. His passionate love affair with an Argentine woman appears to be a classic case of a middle-aged man who wants out of his life.

If he doesn't want his job, he should quit. He can't tell his wife he wants out of the marriage, or the people that he wants to resign- he creates a situation where all of that will be questioned and dealt with for him by others. Kind of cowardly, imo.

It’s kind of amazing, but Governor Mark Sanford actually seems to believe he can remain in office his marriage despite his propensity for disappearing without notice and lying about the reason.

This guy is a real nut case. He's obviously unfit to hold the office of governor, to disappear without telling someone so he can go cavort with his mistress in Argentina is the height of irresponsibility. What about his duties to the people of the state, clearly that's small potatoes to this fool. Any South Carolina resident with half a brain should want that dufus outta there!

17 MandyManners  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 10:09:32am

I saw a Republican on Fox this morning giving him what-for, saying he'll call for an investigation into the money Sanford spent on his trip.

Sanford's blubbering and sanctimonious self-analysis is embarrassment enough for his state to throw the bum out.

Then there's misappropriation of state funds to support his foreign affair.
Tacking on extra legs on "state" flights to Brazil, to make extra stops in Argentina?

This guy thinks he's McCain's younger more Southern libertarian version.

Be gone, jump, run, fly to Argentina, just leave the state and country.

The best chance to stop this bill is in the Senate. There it needs 60 votes and that will be harder to do. Which Dem Senators can we peel off? Those in places like Colorado and Montana come to mind. Also perhaps Casey in Pennsylvania.

35 lawhawk  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 10:13:08am

Sanford is simply following in the illustrious footsteps of the following (in no particular order):

Eliot Spitzer (D-NY)
Jim McGreevey (D-NJ)
Barney Frank (D-MA)
Gerry Studds (D-MA)
Charles Rangel (D-NY)
William Jefferson (D-LA)
Ted Stevens (R-AK)
Chris Dodd (D-CT)

And many many more...

All thought they were entitled to remain in their positions despite ethical flaps, clear criminality, and/or controversy surrounding their infidelities depending on their individual circumstances.

It's a bipartisan effort to remain in power despite their actions that show them unsuited to remain in office - and in some cases, their constitutents made it a point to reelect them on multiple occasions.

A few, like Mark Foley, were tossed, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

He certainly has his defenders and apologists among the usual suspects. It's odd that the advocates of traditional values have forgotten one of the most important and most traditional: the sense of duty. According to early media reports, nobody in the state administration knew where Sanford was, including the state police commander and the Adjutant General. As far as I am concerned this jerk abandoned his post and should be sacked immediately. The police commander and adjutant-general could be jailed if they did this, btw.

42 Cannadian Club Akbar  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 10:14:45am

I've never been with a woman from Argentina, but I doubt it is so good I would throw away a career and a marriage and break up my family.

43 Sharmuta  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 10:14:45am
A number of social conservatives have said that Sanford's survival in South Carolina depends on whether he is able to reconcile with his wife. The Palmetto Council, an important local social conservative organization, issued a statement saying Sanford "told the truth with apparent contrition -- and contrition is a start."

I really don't care about his private life. The problem here is he abdicated his duty to the people of South Carolina with his bender. Placing pressure on a politician's personal life shouldn't be the business of politics unless it's criminal. This is a private matter.

As one of our esteemed Lizards noted earlier, its not the infidelity that is the problem with him staying in office. Any McDonalds fry cook would have been fired after 5 days AWOL much less the Chief Executive of a whole state.

Clearly he has allowed his personal problems to interfere with his job. Perhaps the citizens of South Carolina can do him a favor and give him some more personal time to get his act straight.

Sanford is a creep but it isn't like he hired a prostitute, drown a campaign worker, lied in a civil rights suit, had a prostitution ring operating out of his townhouse, impregnated a campaign worker while using his wife's breast cancer as a campaign tool, made millions off legislation that benefited his lobbyist spouse, blah, blah blah.

Sanford says he'll reimburse state for $12,000 South America trip

COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is telling his state agency chiefs that he's sorry for keeping them in the dark when he went to see Argentina to see his mistress.

The Republican on Friday held his typical public meeting with the agency chiefs, but started with apologies and likening his confession and future to the biblical plight of King David.

...The governor has not addressed the legal questions, but Sanford on Thursday said he would pay back an undisclosed amount for the nine-day trip to Brazil and Argentina for which taxpayers paid $12,000 last year. That includes $8,687 for Sanford's plane ticket, and $453 in lodging.

"I made a mistake while I was there in meeting with the woman who I was unfaithful with," the governor said in a statement.

It boils down to not being able to perform his duties- no matter how we came to know about it. He should resign if he has any integrity.

And there is the kicker... from what he did, it shows he has no integrity.. very intertwined

96 solomonpanting  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 10:25:40am
It was only after The State got in touch with the governor's office, saying it had copies of several incriminating emails between Sanford and the Argentine woman, that Sanford scheduled a news conference and confessed.

Is it against the law and/or an invasion of privacy to obtain and/or publish private phone calls? Wasn't this what all of the critics of Bush's Homeland Security's monitoring of calls were complaining about?

Sanford could have been leading the charge against Cap & Trade right now if he had his priorities straight. He could have been leading the charge on the issues you care about, balanced budget bla bla bla.

Instead, he's sucking oxygen out of IMPORTANT issues.

Sanford is a dirt bag! Why do conservatives have to resign when they commit adultery? When liberal can commit crimes and their career is improved.
Obama's shady home purchase from felons. Tax Cheat Tim Geitner? Should Barney Frank resign? Why didn't William "cold cash" Jefferson resign? John Conyers wife is a felon. Did Clinton resign for adultery and lying under oath? Diane Feinstein is dirty. Pelosi's family hired illegal aliens at their winery and she pushed legislation to exempt companies from taxation and regulation in which she had a financial stake? Chris Dodd is a liar and received favors from Country Wide mortgage.

Conservatives generally hold ourselves to a higher standard and that is why we call for Sanford's resignation. He is a lying dirt bag. But Liberals appear to have no moral center and as long as their "political" agenda is being advanced. The world is upside down!

Forgive the OT, but I got an alert about this story, and I'm laughing my head off.

It's from World Net Daily, which is about as credible as the Weekly World News, so I merely link it for amusement value:

Ark of the Covenant to be Unveiled in Ethiopia

Now, a quick word: there is a fairly old occult speculation that places the Ark in Ethiopia. A reporter by the name of Hancock went mad while following this trail and wrote a book that is an absolutely fascinating portrait of deteriorating sanity.

That might be true of some men at some point in their lives; but it is not universally true.

That's putting it a bit too far.

Yes of course. But in context, she didn't pick men well and this was her early 20's when women are painfully more mature than men. Still makes me chuckle hearing her say it snappy-like with her Brit accent, usually after getting flaked on or watching a group of us 20-somethings act like 20-somethings.

Sanford doesn't deserve that description, but his integrity is in a deep hole. The first thing he could do is resign and work on fixing his family situation before he tried getting back into politics.

Not defending, just asking...

Didn't he tell his staff he was leaving and that he "might" go hiking? Sounds like people DID know he was going away and that he wasn't definite about just where.

When a Gov. is out of touch he needs to sign off and transfer authority temporarily to the Lt. Gov.

If a emergency occurs the Lt. Gov. wouldn't have the power to activate the Nat. Guard. They'd have to waste time, trying to locate the Gov. then get a court order declaring the Gov. missing etc...

All the jackass had to do was say I'm taking a break for a few days, the Lt. Gov. is in charge, I cannot be reached.

Just to keep everything in perspective, comes this quip on CNN:

Twitter crashed as users saw multiple "fail whales" -- the illustrations the site uses as error messages -- user FoieGrasie posting, "Irony: The protesters in Iran using twitter as com are unable to get online because of all the posts of 'Michael Jackson RIP.' Well done." The site's status blog said that Twitter had had to temporarily disable its search results, saved searches and trend topics.

Outstanding! Music legend dies, and nearly takes down one of the key communications efforts by the opposition to the Islamofascists in Tehran because everyone was rushing to say RIP to Michael Jackson. If only so many people cared for the millions at risk of subjugation in Iran today.

Instead, the media is devoting nearly all of the above the fold coverage to Jackson's death. It's a frakking circus, but I guess the public loves a circus. They're getting one.

Just as the House is set to vote on the cap and trade tax that will sap the US economy for years to come, and is preparing a health makeover that will undermine the delivery of health care for generations to come. After all, if the government can't even deliver on existing promises of health care to US veterans, why should anyone else think that they'll deliver quality care to everyone else?

202 Dad O' Blondes  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 10:59:11am

He should resign.

Yikes, he authored these e-mails which everyone has read:

"My heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul," Sanford wrote in one of the e-mails, dated last summer. "I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light .."

I can see the resignation speech now - Jim McGreevy version:

I am an Amorous American...

.

203 BARACK THE VOTE  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 11:00:36am

Let's forget what party Sanford belongs to. Let's even try to forget he's a governor.

Let's just think about what he did, divorced (heh) from all political or partisan contexts.

Aren't his actions profoundly weird? This is a guy with a good job and rising future, a wife and 4 kids, and he chose to run away and abandon his job and his family and leave no word. For days.

It's so strange, This is someone who shot off his legs for love, sort of. I mean this is someone who hurt not only his family but himself and all his prospects *severely*. For what? Essentially an epistolary romance.

re: #35 lawhawk

Sanford is simply following in the illustrious footsteps of the following (in no particular order):

Eliot Spitzer (D-NY)
Jim McGreevey (D-NJ)
Barney Frank (D-MA)
Gerry Studds (D-MA)
Charles Rangel (D-NY)
William Jefferson (D-LA)
Ted Stevens (R-AK)
Chris Dodd (D-CT)

And many many more...

All thought they were entitled to remain in their positions despite ethical flaps, clear criminality, and/or controversy surrounding their infidelities depending on their individual circumstances.

Elliot Spitzer and Jim McGreavy most certainly did not think they were entitled to remain in their positions. That's why they resigned the very day they had to confess.

David Vitter and Larry Craig did not resign, nor did John Ensign.

It is now apparent this guy is a freakin' idiot on many levels; he needs to get his stupid a$$ out of office. Nothing so tragic as when a supposedly good person fails every aspect of their life in one fell swoop.

For his kids sake I hope he gets some help and starts behaving like an adult so they have a reasonable father figure for the rest of their lives.

209 Dad O' Blondes  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 11:33:25am

re: #205 sagehen

Elliot Spitzer and Jim McGreavy most certainly did not think they were entitled to remain in their positions. That's why they resigned the very day they had to confess.

Good point.

But just to split some hairs:

1. Spitzer HAD to resign. His conduct was not just immoral, it was illegal. He was contracting services from a criminal enterprise, and he contracted some services across state lines, in violation of FEDERAL law.

2. McGreevey engaged in more notorious activity, and his own confessions of seeking anonymous gay sex in bathrooms and bookstores didn't help. He also appointed his gay-lover, foreign national, to New Jersey's top security post, a conflict of interest and an invalid appointment, as the gay lover could not gain national security clearance from the Feds because he was not a US citizen.

So while problematic, Sanford's behavior doesn't seem to rise to the obviously illegal Spitzer level.

Though disappearing for 5 days and using taxpayer funds to purchase plane tickets to Argentina to see his lover, presents some big-time judgement issues.

And last but not least -- anybody in Sanford's position who'd write e-mails like that should resign -- on principle.

.

210 nyc redneck  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 11:54:17am

he seems unstable. it is so irresponsible for the guy to just disappear, his family not even knowing where he is. it really goes to character. it calls into question whether he is even able to perform his duties as gov. given his obvious state of mind. he is like an out of control love struck teenage boy. this is unbecoming
in a 50 yr. old married man w/ 4 children who has major political responsibilities.

I'm pretty sure Spitzer did NOT resign the day he made his presser on the hooker scandal. He did so after a few days when it became clear he couldn't hang on.

On Sanford, there are a few good reasons why he might NOT resign/get impeached:

a. Whatever his lapse in judgment, its not clear he actually committed any CRIMES in this affair (ie unlike Spitzer). Certainly nothing like committing perjury (eg Bill Clinton), violating the Mann act or shuffling money around to avoid financial scrutiny (eg Spitzer).

At worst, it seems Sanford may have spent a relatively small amount of gov't money in "dual/use" type activities visiting his mistress on State-approved business. Looks bad, but the SC State legislators may decline to start throwing stones in THAT glass house.

b. Sanford is effectively a lame duck anyway. He's only got a little over a year in office left and can't run for re-election. The SC legislature would probably rather see him in office but significantly weakened rather than have to stand up to anyone stronger.

c. Meanwhile, the Lt. Governor in SC is not well-like either. There are multiple powerful individuals on both sides of the aisle eying the governor's seat, and none of them want to have to run against a high-profile "incumbent" (which is what Andre Bauer would be). So there is incentive from both parties to let Sanford stew for another year.

213 Adrenalyn  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 1:33:15pm

don't resign

214 Ning The Merciless  Fri, Jun 26, 2009 5:44:52pm

This whole story is a huge waste of time. It shouldn't be of interest to anyone outside the borders of the State of South Carolina. Given that SC is a deep red state I imagine he is in a bit of trouble. But to most of the people fussing over this "Scandal" I would just like to say: the man's relationship with his wife, or lack thereof, is nobody's business except in that it has to be public so that it is not something he could be blackmailed over. Beyond that his personal life is just that - Personal.

Assuming I was a resident of SC then I might care about the possible mis-use of state funds or the part about being out of contact with the state government.

Meanwhile the House is passing this horrendously stupid energy bill but the media is saying - "Oooh Republicans, look over here, a scandal for you to talk about. What? No there's nothing happening in congress today why do you ask?" This was too convenient for Obama-lama-dingdong and Nan 'Stretch' Pelosi to work their mischief. The main stream media HAD to run with this story and blanket us with this BS.
