Sotomayor Transcripts and Live Updates

Politics • Views: 2,750

Andrew Malcolm and associates have been doing a great job of live-blogging the Sotomayor hearing at Top of the Ticket, including posting transcripts of Sen. Jon Kyl’s rambling, digressing, endless questions, which is above and beyond the call of duty: Sotomayor hearings: Graham comes out swinging.

Here’s the live video stream from senate.gov, moved from the earlier thread:

[Live video finished for the day…]

UPDATE at 7/14/09 2:28:02 pm:

As a fashion wise non-latina woman, I would hope that future Justice Sotomayor would get herself to a stylist ASAP.
She can’t spend her whole life in those robes…

Impose a word tax on the Senate. That would shorten the hearings and eliminate the deficit in short order.

Robert Spencer Fauxtography…
Spencer has posted a half naked picture of Ahmed Rehab who withdrew from the ALA event because of Spencer’s participation. The source of the pic is here. Notice anything strange about the two pics? Although there are two separate poses the angle of the head is exactly the same in both pics. Even the glare from the flash on his glasses is exactly the same in both pics.

Meanwhile, American Jewish leaders who met with Obama on Tuesday expressed great satisfaction with their discussion. Obama said Israel must “engage in serious self-reflection” regarding the conflict with the Palestinians.

Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of the Union for Reform Judaism, said he and
other participants were very impressed by what they heard and left the meeting with a very good feeling. Yoffie told Haaretz Tuesday that the president reassured the Jewish leaders over their concern about recent tensions between the White House and the Jewish community over Obama’s criticism of settlement activity in the West Bank.

OT: Human Rights Watch Goes to Saudi Arabia

A delegation from Human Rights Watch was recently in Saudi Arabia. To investigate the mistreatment of women under Saudi Law? To campaign for the rights of homosexuals, subject to the death penalty in Saudi Arabia? To protest the lack of religious freedom in the Saudi Kingdom? To issue a report on Saudi political prisoners?
No, no, no, and no. The delegation arrived to raise money from wealthy Saudis by highlighting HRW’s demonization of Israel. An HRW spokesperson, Sarah Leah Whitson, highlighted HRW’s battles with “pro-Israel pressure groups in the US, the European Union and the United Nations.” (Was Ms. Whitson required to wear a burkha, or are exceptions made for visiting anti-Israel “human rights” activists”? Driving a car, no doubt, was out of the question.)
Apparently, Ms. Whitson found no time to criticize Saudi Arabia’s abysmal human rights record. …
… The point of my post, though, is not that HRW is pro-Saudi, but that it is maniacally anti-Israel. The most recent manifestation is that its officers see nothing unseemly about raising funds among the elite of one of the most totalitarian nations on earth, with a pitch about how the money is needed to fight “pro-Israel forces,” without the felt need to discuss any of the Saudis’ manifold human rights violations, and without apparent concern that becoming dependent on funds emanating from a brutal dictatorship leaves you vulnerable to that brutal dictatorship later cutting off the flow of funds, if you don’t “behave.” BY: DAVID BERNSTEIN at: WSJ

OT, reposted from previous thread:

re: #517 JacksonTn

Hi, Jackson: I’ve got a problem, here. I was just reading the Lounge thread and notice that for some reason you have cut and pasted an angry conversation you had with another commenter, then substituted my name for theirs.

You then call me an “Obama drooler,” and “drunk with ignorance” for something I did not say.

I have no idea why you would do this, but I really don’t appreciate it. Goodness knows I have enough flaws of my own to answer for, without taking on someone else’s.

I would also like for the folks who approved of your take-down of me…Lincoln, Mandy, Pink, and Reine, so far…to note that the information is false. I’d appreciate a correction, when you have time.

My response just posted on the thread below:

Ed. Jax’n came back on that thread and said it wasn’t you.
Those of us reading those threads, btw, as I was, knew it anyhow, because we knew what everbody said, and we knew it wasn’t you. Even if we had not known, Jackson came back and made the correction.

Please do not ever make an assumption that I have updinged somebody because I agree with or like their “takedown” of anybody. There are many reasons I upding; you do not know and cannot know what they are.

We cannot take our young children to Band of Brothers. I would not want my 3 & 4 yr old grandsons watching “The Great Raid”
So we take them to watch the good guys win the battle of the robots or the star wars trilogy or the evil Disney characters get beaten (and usually dead.)

At least with transformers, star wars, and the old Disney movies, the bad guys really were bad guys and not the ‘planet rapers’ that so many shows are about now. I hate Power Rangers

Those “formatting” errors happen from time to time - anybody reading the thread knows immediately when they happen.

And for somebody to assume they know WHY I (or anybody else) dinged up any particular comment, without asking me, and posting my nic with reasons that the commenter is assuming I had, is just wrong.

I agree, axegrinder. I don’t care a hoot about dings I get/don’t get, and I have no problem with different opinions. I was pointing out a comment that quoted an angry conversation with somebody else and put my name on the top. Just correcting a mistake, and it’s been corrected. I’ll move on.

Moral Relativism.

…that right and wrong is determined by your genetic background, or your upbringing, and is a problem only of perspective: that’s the essence of Sotomayor. That’s what Kyl’s questions are about.

Kyl first asked whether Sotomayor would agree with President Obama’s analogy about judging that suggested there is place in decision-making for empathy for certain disadvantaged groups. But Sotomayor rejected that approach flatly. “We apply law to facts,” Sotomayor said. “We don’t apply feelings,” evoking a grateful response from Kyl. (For a moment, he almost made it sound like they were simpatico. For a moment.)

But then Kyl, a lawyer, got to the heart of the matter, reading aloud several passages from a speech Sotomayor delivered at Seton Hall University in 2003. “To judge is an exercise in power. There is no objective stance. No neutrality. No escape from choice,” Kyl quoted Sotomayor as saying.

From Sotomayor:

“Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences…our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging.”

This is all wrong. Being a judge demands objectivity and, like she said earlier, applying law to facts. But any mention she makes of this herself is only Orwellian lipservice: her record and her unguarded words speak for themselves.

FEDERALIST No. 78 says of the judiciary:

…in a republic it is a no less excellent barrier to the encroachments and oppressions of the representative body. And it is the best expedient which can be devised in any government, to secure a steady, upright, and impartial administration of the laws…The independence of the judges may be an essential safeguard against the effects of occasional ill humors in the society. These sometimes extend no farther than to the injury of the private rights of particular classes of citizens, by unjust and partial laws.

And that’s not all; Sotomayor goes along with Ginsburg in saying that we should look to international law as a guide in the courts. This is ridiculous. A justice’s has an obligation to the Constitution only. Other nations’ laws and precedents have no bearing or interest in a US court, and can only do harm.

Axegrinder - well, of course most people care, I think.
The issue is how much stock we put into it.
There are two users, neither of whom posts very much, who I’ve seen go back on threads a couple of days old, and down-ding every comment I’ve made.

I’ve never made an issue of it, and I certainly would not name them. They have some adverse reaction to me, and so be it. Making an issue of it, or calling them out on it would serve no purpose. They are allowed to have their own reasons for the “ding” system, and to use it however they want. As am I.

I don’t like condescension. It is usually used by one person toward another who appears to be less gifted in some way. It is a bullying tactic, imo. And I will upding anyone who attempts to defend themselves from it.
