Another eruption of antisemitism from Turkey.

JERUSALEM, Oct 15 (Reuters) - A Turkish television drama series which depicts an Israeli soldier shooting dead a Palestinian baby, strained already tense relations on Thursday between Israel and Turkey, a strategic Muslim ally.

Previously close ties between the Jewish state and Turkey, a secular state with a Muslim population, have deteriorated since Israel’s offensive in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, which is ruled by the Islamist group Hamas.

Turkey has at the same time strengthened its relations with neighbouring Syria, where much of Hamas’ leadership is based. …

The scene, broadcast on Israel’s Channel Two television on Wednesday, showed a Palestinian father holding a baby above his head and an Israeli soldier deliberately shooting the infant.

Turkey has been swinging towards Islam since their last elections. It's not as secular as just 10 years ago. This is merely yet another example of the elephant in the room, ignored by the current and past administrations, Islamic intolerance for a non muslim nation in the middle east.

Who lost Turkey?

THE TRUTH: Turkey's turn against Israel is best understood in the context of its evolutionary transformation from the secular, nationalist and Western-oriented ethos of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk to the dogmatic, radical, pan-Islamic and Middle Eastern attitudes of its current rulers. This is most clearly reflected in Turkey's apparent decision not to actively pursue membership in the European Union because it has given up trying to reconcile what it wants for itself with what the West wants for it.

Maybe I'm naive, but how exactly does Turkey qualify as a "secular" state?

Turkey is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic whose political system was established in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, following the fall of the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of World War I. Since then, Turkey has become increasingly integrated with the West through membership in organizations such as the Council of Europe, NATO, OECD, OSCE and the G-20 major economies. Turkey began full membership negotiations with the European Union in 2005, having been an associate member of the EEC since 1963, and having reached a customs union agreement in 1995. Meanwhile, Turkey has continued to foster close cultural, political, economic and industrial relations with Asia, particularly with the states of the Middle East and Central Asia, through membership in organizations such as the OIC and ECO. Turkey is classified as a developed country[9] by the CIA and as a regional power[10][11] by political scientists and economists worldwide.

Ni surprise.

The French war in Algeria ended in 1962 and it took to them to 1999 to admit there even was a war. It took even longer for them to come clean on atrocities that were committed during the war and the occupation that preceded the war.

25 lostlakehiker  Thu, Oct 15, 2009 2:01:26pm

This sort of thing isn't a swing towards Islam. Say what you will about it, one of its tenets is justice. The film presents an unjust depiction of Israeli military doctrine and practice.

One wonders if these guys realize where all this can lead? Turkey does not need to be dragged into war by a baying, ignorant mob. Wars have an ugly habit of not conforming to the scenario envisioned by the leadership at the outset.

Similar happened on deviantART last January. An anti-Israel cartoon posted by a Turkish member made the front page, reserved for the most popular images of the day, with about 10,000 hits. The description under the image now links to the website of Holocaust denier Michael A. Hoffman.

Full details of the investigation here, because proper reports about sociology happen in art blogs. Some images have been removed by deviantART's administration for copyright violations, leading to some broken links.

AND the immigration issue, fueled by well publicized resentment in Germany and elsewhere.

Couple that with the border free travel of the Schengen Agreement and the opposition to full Turkish membership in the EU was inevitable.

Militants assault police compounds in Pakistan

Islamist militants launched coordinated assaults on three police compounds in Pakistan's second largest city Thursday, the latest in a wave of attacks by insurgents bringing the war to the country's heartland ahead of an expected offensive against their Afghan border sanctuary.

The dramatic escalation in violence appears to be an attempt by the Taliban- and al-Qaida-led insurgency to seize the initiative from the army and deliver a warning to the U.S.-backed civilian government: Attack us in South Waziristan and we will fight back in your cities.

It also discredits Pakistani claims that the Taliban were on the ropes after this year's military campaign in the Swat Valley and the killing of their leader, Baitullah Mehsud, in a U.S. airstrike in August.

Perhaps when a Beslan-like crisis or a Swat Valley crisis happens in Turkey, the turks will understand why religious partys like AKP are dangerous and what happens when you battle terrorists, like Israel does.

The Russians now know how to deal with muslim insurgents. And by the way, nobody ever protested against the russian way of dealing with terrorists, even if it means killings everybody and destroying everything - just look at Grozny. But those idiots who stand silent with Russia, became strangely active when is Israel or the United States.

Can't. comment. on . his. thread. Still boiling over the BS "protocols" signed between Armenia & Turkey. One outcome of that little number is political cover for US diplomats who now have a "commission" to point at when the uncomfortable question of genocide denial/whitewashing comes up.

Well said.

Minute 1:55 - 2:30 in the film disgusts me. It's a scene of an Israeli soldier lethally firing at close range on a smiling frightened young girl.

Substitute the Israeli soldier for a "Hamas militant" and you have the killer of Tali Hatuel and her daughters. Not fiction.

Off topic: the balloon story is starting to give off a faint whiff of...something. That balloon is way, way too small to have lifted a child off the ground. The parents seem to have a history of publicity seeking, as well. Authorities are also dropping hints that they don't think the kid was ever in or on the balloon.

Color me cynical, but nothing sounds right about any of this story.

My friend, my sense of humor is as warped as yours. The comedic straight man in me wants to ask "and what movies would you make" but we all know that we have already gone beyond the pale of tastelessness. Probably have to leave the topic for a Mel Brooks. Sorry about feeling the need to write this. I just fear how opponents to Charles lofty goals might use this to smear him.

Andrew Vacchs is one of my favorite writers. He writes about the consequences of child abuse and poverty on young women's lives (and how it raises the risk of prostitution, alcoholism, drug addiction and other such horrors). I think I feel ill. Gotta find quiet for a while. Be well, and nurture your obvious brilliance to do good (as I am sure you do).

Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said."

It was a joke. I didn't say it to them, I said it to a group of people not even remotely attached to this family or kid. Overreacting to a situation in which you have no control is unhealthy. I've already admitted I'm an asshole, I have a tendency to say things out loud that strike me as amusing. I apologized to Walter, I wasn't seriously ragging on Denver. Let me say it again, I really, really love Denver. 2nd favorite city on the parts of the planet that I've visited.

I once saw some of our pilots practicing in the F-117 when I was at Alamogordo. It was quite a sight.

The hotel manager where I was staying witnessed the first atomic bomb blast first hand. She had amazing stories; I bought us a 12-pack of Newcastle and listened to her for hours.

BHO would want some measure of deniability. A carrier out on the Indian Ocean conducting "excersises" may afford him (us) that. I doubt the Iranians have the capability to
A) track every launch off a carrier 500+ miles off their coast
and even if they do
B) have the technology to determine whose jet was launched
