CHARLES - I tried to buy a book for my Kindle in your Amazon Store. The book has a Kindle version, but I could only get to the hard-cover version in the "LGF Store". To get the Kindle version, I had to just to to Amazon, not through LGF. Shouldn't I be able to make purchases through your link for anything that Amazon has? Or just the things that are in the "LGF" store?

Kindle books don't go through the associate program right now. When people buy Kindle books, there's no cut to the associate, e.g., me. I guess that's why they don't show up in the LGF associate store...

The guy that introduced me to Weezer had his own band in Seattle, but it must not have been a great one, because he was a bike mechanic. He still shaved his legs, even though he had not raced in 10 years. He said it was because his wife liked it. Then she left him, but he kept on shavin'.

What will the Right Wing Purity Council make of this. Pagan Rites for Queens GOP Council Candidate
Forget the mayoral, comptroller and public advocate races. The best political show in town is taking place in Bayside, Queens where leaders are wrestling with the question of whether a strong Republican city council nominee should be forced from his race -- just because he's a card-carrying pagan. The candidate in question is GOP council nominee Dan Halloran who was revealed in a September 17 story in the Queens Tribune to be a member of a religious organization that is, well - heathen. Here's how the Tribune described it:
"Halloran is the 'First Atheling,' or King, of Normandy, a branch of the Theod faith of pre-Christian Heathen religions assembled in the Greater New York area. A group of dedicated fellow pagans swear their allegiance to him through oaths of fidelity, allowing luck from a series of ancient gods - specifically the 'Norse' or 'Germanic' gods Odin, Tyr and Freyr - to pass through the King to his kinsmen."

I can't get over how bad George Hutchins campaign website is, he is running for GOP in the 4th district in North Carolina in 2010.
It has everything, bright red background, RANDOM capitalization OF words, multiple font colors, random quotes and slogans, banners for a dozen different far right groups, "Supports FOX News" banners featured prominently at the top and then scattered around elsewhere. The Alamo!, Windsor castle (wtf?), Teddy Roosevelt as a rough rider, and Ronald Reagan in Berlin.
It looks worse than most teenagers myspace pages that I have seen, or at least more busy. Maybe his grandson made the page for him or something?

Looks home made. It reminds me of the sort of "design" we used to see when desktop typesetting first became available to the masses. I was in the printing business at the time, and had done "real" typesetting for years, and...well, there's just something about a single page that uses every single typeface available on the user's machine, in every available primary color, that makes me cringe.
We used to call it "ransom note typography" and this web site has exactly the same look to it.

Also on Hutchens's site:
"Teddy Roosevelt...Roughrider...last US President in direct combat."
It depends on what one might mean by direct but I think JFK's encounters with the Japanese were pretty direct. Harry Truman commanded a WW1 artillery battery whose guns had a maximum range of just 7500 yards and were well within reach of German counter-battery fire, not to mention the odd sniper and fast-moving infantry advance. Bush 41's combat experience involved the rather direct process of bombing and strafing Japanese forces. Being shot down into the sea with the loss of your crewmates is certainly not a subtle gesture by the other side.
Perhaps Hutchens is under the impression that TR was already President when he led the Rough Riders up Kettle Hill in 1898?

Back in the mid 80's I went to a Robert Fripp concert. It was Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty Guitarists. It was 12 guys all playing guitars. No singing no other instruments. It was in an auditorium that could hold about 500. There were less then 100 people there. The power went out about halfway through the concert. They unplugged from their amps moved their chairs to the front of the stage and told everyone to move down closer to the stage liked it happened all the time. They played the rest of the show in emergency lighting. Great great show.

I love the Spike Jonze video to "Undone".
The music video for "Undone" was Weezer's first music video. According to Rivers' Edge: The Weezer Story by John D. Luerssen, the band insisted that the video not have anything to do with a sweater. Yet Geffen received twenty five treatments for the video, all involving sweaters. The video marks one of the early directorial efforts of Spike Jonze, whose pitch was simply "A blue stage, a steadicam, a pack of wild dogs."[3] The $60,000 video was shot on a steadicam in one unbroken take, featuring the band playing to a sped up version of the song. When played at a slower speed, the illusion is created that the band is playing the song in the correct time, yet moving in slow motion. The one take was shot over twenty five times and the final version is somewhere between shot #15 and shot #20, in which the band had abandoned the idea of taking the video seriously at all. The humor was brought on by the frustration of shooting the same take over and over to a sped up version of the song as well as the fact that one of the dogs defecated on Patrick Wilson's bass drum pedal. The video became an instant hit on MTV.[4]

Yikes! I'm starting to wonder if the George Hutchins website isn't some kind of hoax. The guy not only has a batshit site design, he actually is batshit and only half literate besides:
"All major civilizations, since the beginning of recorded time, have fallen into DECLINE, and DECAY, once the majority citizens of each society, had ACCEPTED GAY MALE HOMOSEXUAL BEHAVIOR, to be normal standards of conduct, in open public places."
He goes on to blame this gay male homosexual behavior (I guess he's ok with lesbians) for the decline and fall of Greece, Rome, the British Empire, Weimar Germany, and California. Oddly, he goes on to include a pic of himself posing in a public bathhouse, the Roman baths at the aptly named Bath, England to be exact.
He also states that "Open Persecution of GAY MALE HOMOSEXUALS is NOT Recommended..."
Not recommended? Is it only a suggestion? Are would-be persecutors still free to go against this recommendation?

Club For Growth Spent $1 Million in NY-23. Is This a Bad Omen for the GOP in 2010?
The Atlantic’s Chris Good has an interesting breakdown on who spent what on New York’s hotly-contested 23rd congressional district race. The big news: The Club for Growth spent more than $1 million in support of Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. That’s slightly less than the $1.1 million the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chipped in behalf of Democrat Bill Owens. Meanwhile, the National Republican Congressional Committee spent roughly $897,000—most of that money spent on ads directly challenging Owens, as opposed to building up Dede Scozzafava, a moderate Republican who dropped out of the race over the weekend.

More interesting stuff from Jake Tapper:
more exit poll: in VA voters "very" worried about economy went for McDonnell 73-26 percent. In NJ, they went for Christie 59-36 percent.
in VA McDonnell won independents 62-37%. in NJ, Christie won them 58-33%. but indies in VA a much bigger factor.
In both states, sharp drop-off of voters under 30 from 2008. Bad news for Ds.
here's why NJ was competitive: 53% had unfavorable view of Corzine; 49% had unfavorable view of Christie.

We can argue on what, and how, and who it covers, and what it covers, and whether Reid is a douchebag (yes) but some form of reform will pass. And it won't be Marxism, it won't have death panels or murder councils or vivisection politburos. It might be efficient, it might be inefficient, but it'll be at least the beginning of a solution to the titanic ball of utter bullshit that is health care in America now.

Hey, if private industry could somehow make it work, I'd be fine with it. Right now, private industry is failing utterly. Monumental, breathtaking fail. Why IS it that health care providers are exempt from anti-trust? A curious thing, no?
"Health economist James Robinson found in 2003 that three large firms controlled more than 50% of enrollment in almost every state." (source: James Robinson and LA Times
I am not for Government Health Care. I am not hell-bent on single payer. I am for health care that is affordable for average humans, does not rape entrepreneurs and discourage entrepreneurship, does not ruin people's lives, bankrupt them, and cut them off because their babies are too fat.
I just want it to work. I am not an ideologue. Maybe you are. I don't care if private industry makes it work, if the government makes it work, if space aliens land in a flying freaking saucer and give everyone coverage.
Sometimes I think private industry is the solution, sometimes I think government is the solution. I guess that makes me EXTTREMIST LIBURALRLLHGBL!!!

How much experience do you have with Medicare? I worked with people who recieved medicare as part of my gig in mental health. For years and years and years. I dealt with medicare all the time. And it was magnificent. It's the reason I'm so pro-reform. I have actually experienced how smooth and efficient Medicare works.
Ideology is not the answer to this problem.
182 | Dona Quixote Tue, Nov 3, 2009 6:08:07pm |
What is wrong with the public option, ie allowing people who can't find private insurance to buy into a Medicare like program? I know so many people who would love to find any kind of coverage at all. And I knew people who died because they didn't have health care. If I know of people like that, doesn't everyone? What is the solution? Just let people who can't find coverage die? Can we live with that any longer? I'm finding it hard as it hits closer and closer to home. I'm not kidding. I would really like to know what the alternatives are.

Here is what Medicare did for the elderly:
"The poverty rate among the elderly, for example, declined dramatically from 35.2 percent in 1959 to 10.1 percent in 2005 and is now lower than for any other age group."

/but see that means that the cost of care goes up because not enough of them are dying off from lack of it. That's why we'll need death panels or Jack Kavorkian will take over as Surgeon General!

Yep.
Which is why I wonder why so many Americans are in such a rush to let the government get more involved in health care. I want them to back the fuck away a bit.
There are people who brag how their employer provided health care, without requiring qualification tests, cover everything; people like those in congress for example.
Then there are those who have an understanding with their doctor that nothing falling under the deductible is ever documented or submitted so that the for profit won't have a case to double the yearly increase that will come anyway.
Why don't you back the fuck off a bit when you have nothing of value to add?

Yeah..I wonder that about a lot of artists these days...would Brittany Spears even have a career if she had to depend on the radio only for exposure?
I miss the days when you could be one homely SOB and still end up with a great career just because you were talented and could either play or sing or both.

I have contact with a lot of people who are people on Medicaid.
Guess what? In this country if you live from paycheck to paycheck, or don't even have a paycheck then medical costs are the least of your problems. The services are free and the only reason the medical statistics for the group are bad is because they don't take advantage of the services until late in the game.
And that is not Obama socialism. It has been that way for many years. Want to guess who pays for it (which is not to say I mean to let them die)?

According to a peer-reviewed study published earlier this year in the American Journal of Medicine, nearly 62 percent of all U.S. bankruptcies in 2007 were due to health care costs — and 78 percent of people who were driven into bankruptcy by their medical bills had insurance.
A lot of middleclass people live paycheck to paycheck. And even if you don't a lot of people are one medical emergency away from bankruptcy.

I think that access to free care is limited by the area you live in. In my state there is almost no access for working adults with low incomes. Most just pay cash for their doctors visits, use emergency rooms and pray. A Lot.

If you don't have any assets and work part time or are on assistance and typically don't have a credit card or even a bank account, then what meaning is bankruptcy? It is protection from what?
I don't think you realize how many Americans live like that. I didn't until a few years ago.
