Cracked: The 5 Most Badass Presidents of All-Time

Humor • Views: 7,471

Here’s a hilarious piece at cracked.com on The 5 Most Badass Presidents of All-Time.

When the 1828 election rolled around, a lot of people were terrified when they heard Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson was running. If you’re wondering how a guy we’re calling a bad ass got such a lame nickname, it’s because he used to carry a hickory cane around and beat people senseless with it, and if you’re wondering why he did that, it’s because he was a f*cking lunatic.

Former Democratic Senator and Secretary of the Treasurey Albert Gallatin feared a Jackson presidency because of his “habitual disregard of laws and constitutional provisions.” Or in other words, the man was a loose canon—17th Century Washington’s answer to Martin Riggs. Sure, he probably didn’t have an irate black lieutenant to answer to, or a weary partner who was too old for this shit, but he most certainly had a death wish.

How do we know? Well, despite everyone’s best efforts, Jackson was elected to the top office, and when he wasn’t busy shaping the Presidency as we know it today, you could find him out back dueling. In case you haven’t been to the 18th century lately, this unmanly sounding activity actually involves standing across from an armed man and shooting at him while he in turn shoots at you. The number of duels that Jackson took part in varies depending on what source you consult; some say 13, while others rank the number somewhere in the 100’s, both of which are entirely too many times for a reasonable human being to stand in front of someone who is strying to kill them with a loaded gun.

On one occasion, he challenged a man named Charles Dickinson to a duel, (the reason behind it wasn’t important, not to us and certainly not to Jackson), and Jackson was even kind enough to give Dickinson the first shot. We’re gonna go ahead and repeat that: In a duel with pistols, Jackson politely volunteers to be shot at first. Dickinson happily obliged and shot Jackson, who proceeded to shake it off like it was a bee sting. When Jackson returned the favor, Dickinson was not so lucky, and that’s why his face isn’t on the twenty. The bullet, by the by, remained in Jackson’s body for 19 years because, we assume, Jackson knew that time spent removing the bullets would just fall under the general category of “time not dueling,” Jackson’s least favorite category.

Heh.

While almost no two sources are in agreement as to just how much tail Kennedy snagged, historian John Richard Stephens says that "Kennedy confided with friends that he could only be satisfied with three women a day." It's amazing that, with all this boning, Kennedy didn't lose focus and make any colossal screw-ups while in office, and-...What? Bay of what? Moving on.

Most Badass Quote:
"I have only two regrets: I didn't shoot Henry Clay and I didn't hang John C. Calhoun."

That's right. In a life rich with murdering people for little-to-no reason, Jackson's only regret was that he didn't kill quite enough people. People like Calhoun who, it should be noted, was Jackson's vice president.

mmmkay.

Anyone familiar with Cracked knows that Teddy Roosevelt is like a god over there.

Checking Teddy Roosevelt's resume is like reading a How-To guide on ass-kicking manliness. He was a cattle rancher, a deputy sheriff, an explorer, a police commissioner, the assistant Secretary of the Navy, the governor of New York, and a war hero. Out of all of his jobs, hobbies and passions, Roosevelt always had a special spot in his heart for unadulterated violence. In 1898, Roosevelt formed the first U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, known as the Rough Riders. Most people already know of the Rough Riders and their historic charge up San Juan Hill, but few know that, since their horses had to be left behind, the Riders made this charge entirely on foot. You just could not stop this man from violencing the hell out of a San Juan Hill.

Andrew Jackson was devoted to Rachel. He fought 13 duels to protect her honor, and even killed one opponent, Charles Dickinson. On October 1, 1803, he challenged John "Nolichucky Jack" Sevier (the first governor of Tennessee) to a duel after Sevier had dishonored Rachel by saying, "I know of no services you have rendered to this country other than taking a trip to Natchez with another man's wife!"

It shows a lack of judgement that I find shocking. In this day and age, for anyone to smoke tobacco just shows anti-science ignorance.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of fatal cancer, and cancer is one of the leading causes of death, and one of the largest financial costs of American health care.

Eliminate smoking and we would not only eliminate a major cause of preventable death but we would save vast amounts of money spent on health care lowering the costs for everyone.

Interesting ideas:

Is Science A Belief? Is Religion A Science? Recent Research

The researchers “used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the brains of 14 adults while they judged written statements to be “true” (belief), “false” (disbelief), or “undecidable” (uncertainty). To characterize belief, disbelief, and uncertainty in a content-independent manner, we included statements from a wide range of categories: autobiographical, mathematical, geographical, religious, ethical, semantic, and factual.” [...]

There was a significant difference in the response speed for statements that were true compared to those that were false or undecidable. There was no significant difference between the reaction times of these latter two categories. Thus, “Several psychological studies appear to support Spinoza's conjecture that the mere comprehension of a statement entails the tacit acceptance of its being true, whereas disbelief requires a subsequent process of rejection. Understanding a proposition may be analogous to perceiving an object in physical space: We seem to accept appearances as reality until they prove otherwise. Our behavioral data support this hypothesis, insofar as subjects judged statements to be “true” more quickly than they judged them to be “false” or “undecidable”.”

Looking at the brain scans, the images showed a distinct increase in activity in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) for statements of belief versus disbelief. This VMPFC appears to be involved in reasoning tasks that have a high emotional salience, including modulating behaviour in response to changing rewards, selecting goal-based actions and, it seems, in on-going reality monitoring. Thus if our reality is the sum of true propositions then each manifestation of such propositions gets a positive emotional boost, as if to verify that it still holds true. Damage to the VMPFC has been associated with an inability to feel any moral consequences to planned actions as well as to confabulations, where reality-checking has seriously broken down. What was surprising was that this activity in the VMPFC was independent of the content of the propositions: mathematical propositions that were true showed the same signal as religious propositions that were deemed true by believers, as well as irreligious propositions deemed true by disbelievers. What we seem to be witnessing is part of the brain's truth checking system, and that system is powered by emotions. [...]

Consuming candy and other unhealthy foods can lead to obesity, which in turn can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer.

That is an indirect link as it is the sum total of calories consumed. Also, the calories are from sources that are not in of themselves carcinogens as is tobacco.

Obesity is a major contributor to mortality rates, especial heart disease, but it is possible to eat only vegetables and still be obese. It is the sum total of the calories, the individual foods themselves are not toxic, except in limited cases such as those with diabetes or prone to diabetes who need to be careful with sugars.

We really are talking about tens of millions of preventable deaths that are occurring worldwide, the WHO puts this around 5.4 million. In a decade that is 50 million preventable deaths. "In the 20th century, the tobacco epidemic killed 100 million people world wide."

Not presidential, but here's a little-known piece of bad-assery, for these waning hours of Black History Month:

On Oct. 18, 1969, just six weeks after Col. Muammar Gaddafi of the Libyan Army had led a coup deposing Libyas King Idris, he stood at the gates of Wheelus Air Force Base. Facing him was an American officer, also a colonel, named Daniel Chappie James Jr. However, any similarity between the two men ended with their military rank. Before the coup, 27-year old Gadhafi had been a mere lieutenant in the Libyan Army. As leader and chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council, Gadhafi was catapulted to Colonel overnight. In contrast, James, an African American officer, earned his rank the hard way by overcoming racial prejudices and enduring air battles in Korea and Vietnam.

Few Americans recall the day that James faced down Gadhafi. The confrontation occurred when Gadhafi ordered a column of Libyan half-tracks onto Wheelus. The half-tracks blew past the gate guards and through the housing area at top speed.

When James was notified of the intrusion, he came immediately to the front gate and lowered the barrier to prevent more vehicles from entering. Standing a few yards beyond the barrier was Gadhafi with his hand resting on the butt of his pistol. James glared at him, his own .45 ready at his side.

Move your hand away from that gun, James ordered. Much to everyone’s surprise, Gadhafi complied and probably prevented an early end to his dictatorship. As James later recalled, If he had pulled that gun, it never would have cleared his holster. As if to punctuate the impression James had made, the Libyan Army didn’t send any more half-tracks after that incident.

Previously in July 1969, while James was at Wheelus AFB, he displayed an example of his diplomatic talents. Americas relations with Libya had continued to slide downhill as Gadhafi pressured the U. S. Government to withdraw its military presence. But the Libyans wanted the Americans to leave behind expensive technical equipment to keep the base running. The Americans resisted and planned to remove the material from the base. A serious confrontation almost took place when several Libyan colonels demanded an audience with James.

James invited the officers to his home to discuss the issue of the base equipment. Tensions were already high as the Libyans entered James living room. As the Libyan officers sat down, their driver entered the room carrying a submachine gun. James immediately glowered at the Libyan officers. I’m going to count to three, he said, and if that man is not out of my living room by that time, I will physically throw him out. The driver made a hasty retreat.

Same here. Astonishing lives and stories on both sides. I can't really talk about them here, because they're both famous enough to trace back to me, and I don't like that much personal information on the Web.

In this particular case, Granddad claimed it was served at Detroit hockey games. Everybody sort of chuckled at this apparent descent into elderly vulgarity, but he was never one to toss coarse language around lightly, so I always wondered what bit of truth there might be to the tale. Turns out, apparently, all of it.

Senator Dikembe Mutombo Blocks Record Amount Of Legislation

Sen. Dikembe Mutombo (R-CO) showed that he is still one of the most dominant big men in Congress Thursday, blocking a record 16 bills in one legislative session.

The 7-foot-2 senator, who broke the record previously held by Sen. Shawn Bradley (D-NJ), Rep. Arvydas Sabonis (D-OR), and current Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), batted away legislation left and right, sometimes swatting bills so hard that they were sent flying all the way back to committee.

Mutombo punctuated his final block, a clean rejection of the Criminal Justice Reinvestment Act, with his signature finger wag.

"He stuffed the new jobs bill right back in Harry Reid's face," Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told reporters. "And then when Reid tried to put the bill back up for consideration, Sen. Mutombo blocked it a second and then a third time. That's when I knew he had a chance at the record."

"He just completely dominates the Senate floor," McCain added.

You say "liberal projection." You don't think the foundation of a lot of what the liberals expected was not cultivated by President Obama? I think he was very responsible for pushing just the right button that would send the far left into joyous spasms of a leftist paradise.

I'm not saying he out and out promised something, but he was clever enough to plant a seed that became expectations.

How can anyone on the far left (or anyone in general) take this to mean he is going to get out of Afghanistan?

“It is time to turn the page. When I am President, we will wage the war that has to be won, with a comprehensive strategy with five elements: getting out of Iraq and on to the right battlefield in Afghanistan and Pakistan; developing the capabilities and partnerships we need to take out the terrorists and the world’s most deadly weapons; engaging the world to dry up support for terror and extremism; restoring our values; and securing a more resilient homeland.”

I understand exactly what you are say, my disconnect is the fact that you are trying to tell me that some peoples perception to this was just the opposite.

Is the far left really that stupid, or dense, or deluded?

Zombie also claims at the end of the article....

Just today, (Sunday, February 28, 2010), Nancy Pelosi continued to repeat her ludicrous claim that the Tea Party is a fake, dubbing it “astroturfing,” and nothing but a ploy by the GOP to make it appear that it has grassroots support. Of course, everyone knows that even Nancy herself doesn’t believe this claim, but she still thinks that the ol’ “Big Lie” strategy stills works — that if you repeat a falsehood enough times, it becomes true.

Of course the only candidates endorsed at the Tea Parties are Republicans. Should I even bother to check if Ed Martin is a Republican?
Here's are Mr. Martin's pics of the same rally.

hard to say, it's classified. When the IDF took out Sadam's nuker they dropped multi- smart bombs right through the same darn whole... the points in Iran in question are hardened to resist a bomb, but not 10 bombs hitting the same spot 8 seconds apart. The tech is there, the will is in question.

The crews of the Yamashiro and Fuso did not at the Battle of Surigao Strait (part of the larger Battle of Leyte Gulf). Even once their ships were destroyed, they refused rescue, preferring drowning to the disgrace surrender. Islamist regimes have many such people within them and some of them are high-level leaders.

402 keloyd  Sun, Feb 28, 2010 5:52:11pm

An author with the unlikely name Bruce Bueno de Mesquita says we don't need to worry about Iran. Ahmadinejad may indulge some fatalistic martyr talk, but the generals who now have more power than ever are rational. Further, the mullahs with more power than their little front man are less extremist than he. They will get the nuclear weapon threat a little closer to completion, then get bought off at a higher price, kind of like Qaddafi.

re: #402 keloyd

His Wiki:

He was featured as the primary subject in a documentary on the History Channel in December 2008. The show, titled Next Nostradamus, details how Bueno de Mesquita uses computer algorithms to attempt to predict future world events. In the documentary the narrator claims that Bueno de Mesquita's algorithm is secret and proprietary, thus not subject to peer review. In a profile of Bueno de Mesquita in a August 16, 2009 Sunday New York Times magazine article entitled Can Game Theory Predict When Iran Will Get the Bomb?[2], Clive Thompson, author of the article, claims (without providing any references) that a great many of Bueno de Mesquita's forecasts have appeared in peer reviewed journals and that much of the mathematics behind his theories can be found in peer reviewed journal articles and university press books[3]. The documentary also incorrectly states that Iran has launched a nuclear missile in 2008.[citation needed] In fact, Iran has both a confirmed civilian nuclear energy program and a separate missile program, but has not demonstrated any nuclear weapons capability.[4][discuss]

re: #415 Dark_Falcon

Jutland gives Leyte a run for its money as the largest action in some categories, like tonnage of ships involved in the actual fighting. The addition of air power to the equation also makes it somewhat less of a pure 'naval' action, just as since combined arms have been in place there are few purely 'ground' actions that don't involve air support by at least one side.

And yeah, I love this blog for the WWII knowledge, and the political history knowledge.

He's different as far as I can tell. His thing is game theory and rational choices theory. For you civilians, those are ways of melding psychology and statistical math - useful in economics, investing, evolutionary biology (sayz Wiki) and scenarios where lots of people are making decisions based on incomplete information (like elections and what Ahmadinajad's doing next).

All I knew of Fermi was his "Paradox" that said if there are billions of stars, if there was such a thing as intelligent life among them, why haven't they contacted us already? His "short cuts" (summarized in Wiki) look like you better be a genius to cut those corners and still get the right answers.

If you're asking if he's ever touched the real Nostradamus's work, that's a big NO. He doesn't strike me as being into that Renaissance party trick mumbo jumbo.

The real world is impenetrable enough. He's predicted elections for years and done work for the CIA predicting things in the future no one has any business being able to see. It's like he pinched Johny Carson's old Carnac the Magnificent hat.

Decatur Deb - I miss being in school getting to solve puzzles like that all day.

Oh, I'd love to get some civilization into the little heathen.

Seriously, I'll look into that.

How old is he?

He'll probably get into it himself anyways, all boys do :)

re: #433 rwdflynavy

See if you can interest him in Age of Empires II or III. My son loved them at that age.

Will do. He loves to hear about my grandfathers who fought in both world wars and my dad tells him a lot about flying to the very edges of Soviet air-space and aggravating the godless Commies.

Not nowadays, when they can be suspended and possibly prosecuted for drawing a picture of a uniformed relative in the service, or pointing a chicken drumstick and saying "bang". My guess is that the school system in Mandy's flyover hometown is not like that, though...

448 The Sanity Inspector  Sun, Feb 28, 2010 6:33:32pm

Off to pick up the nephew at the airport, good luck Mandy.

re: #435 talon_262

It depends on whose and what military history. If you want to teach The Kid some Civil War or Revolutionary War history, take him to one of the national battlefields/historical parks (Shiloh National Military Park is good, if you're in/near southwest TN).

I visited it at times when I was growing up but it's a distance now. (IIRC, you're in that region.) I'll see what I can dig up.

re: #436 The Sanity Inspector

Is he a reader?

He's at the top of his class in the reading program but, he does it only to beat the other kids. (Judged on number of books, comprehension and vocabulary.)

451 MandyManners  Sun, Feb 28, 2010 6:36:39pm

re: #438 The Sanity Inspector

Okay, strike my previous. The History Channel had a cool series of cgi recreations of famous aerial dogfights. Some clips are on YouTube, and some may be in your cable provider's On Demand area.

Oh, he loves YouTube. (In fact, he's made a few videos and has posted them.) I'll see what I can find. I might let my dad do that bit, though, 'cause he's a former naval aviator and is into that stuff.

Awesome.

re: #439 rwdflynavy

If so get him "The Dangerous Book for Boys" Lots of good stuff including some famous battles...

Got it. He loves it. But, he wants to know more about blowing up stuff, an endeavor which I heartily and actively discourage.

Or, take him to an air show at a military base, if there's one within a day's drive. Little boys of all ages love jets, just like little girls of all ages love jet pilots.

Without saying too much, he's been to quite a few.

Note that it's not a first-person shoot-em-up. It's turn based, and you have to develop your tribe from spears and huts on up. Later on you get to build (and pay for) stealth bombers.

Oh, I will not let him do the former. He can buy it when he turns 18. But, the Civ stuff sounds interesting and informative.

Yea, he's a good wiki subject, being mostly noncontroversial, but I never saw that History Channel show to know what they were talking about in the Wiki text. I saw another nostrodamus reference in a title of an article about him, and thought that was what you referred to.

In the mean time, I'm not going to worry about Iran. That math dude is smarter than a room full of vulcans and doctor who's after a big salmon dinner, and he's not worried.

I've been to Shiloh more than a few times with my Scout troop, as a Scout and as a Scouter...amazing that such a large quiet place was the scene of one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the Civil War.

re: #432 MandyManners

Well, the Total War Series is great-- it's for the PC. I highly recommend it both for its sense of history and its mockup of tactics. The older ones (Rome and Medieval I) won't take much computer to run.

I also recommend the Asterix and Obelix series of comic books, which aren't military history but are in the context of the Roman subjugation of Gaul and provide a nice, cartoonish history that's very accessible to kids.
