The week’s best deadpan photo/caption convergence, from unionleader.com: Two fires hours apart destroy beach house.

Firefighters wrap up at the scene of a fire at 15 M. St. in Hampton this morning, where a home was gutted by two fires this morning. Right, Wayne McGowen, who was sleeping in the basement of the house when it caught fire, watches firefighters at the scene along with neighbor Kali Burns, who was dressed as a gorilla.

So wait two fires... so you're saying it was on fire... got put out... and then it caught fire again later on the same day?

Wow what are the odds?

Yes they are

Tarantino vs Coen Brothers

If there are any film buffs here I'd love to know who killed the girl in Barton Fink. I assume John Goodman did it to teach John Turturo a lesson but how did he kill her from the next room without waking them? That always bugged me. I assume it was a plot flaw.

Goodman is the devil, and flames burst along the walls as he runs.

However, it wasn't necessarily him. In a world with the devil running loose, there might be other dark things around.

It could have been Fink, in a moment of madness, and it could have been W.P. Mayhew.

Four hour rain delay for the Giants game today...that makes for a long day for my wife, whose birthday it is. So I've got three choices for her for dinner:
1. Turkey/pork/beef meatloaf (with hard boiled eggs in the middle - she likes those and it gives the meatloaf a cool look when you slice it)...it's in the oven...can wait a day or to to get eaten if necessary
2. Eggplant parmesan - got the eggplant, parmesan, etc.
3. Rosemary marinated lamb loins - they grill quickly, and I can roast baby red potatoes, make a salad, and have the fage, cucumber, etc. to make a sauce for the side.
Now I just wish she'd come home and leave her employees to finish the game...small crowd, cold weather...can't be too busy.

No, I didn't bake her a cake...should have, as I was home all day, but I'll make her a pie in a couple of days to make up for it.

Well, I think the fact that the picture becomes real-- the painting in the room becomes a real-life shot later in the movie, perfectly real-- shows that the movie is taking place in a surreal world. She doesn't have to have been killed by anyone other than the story itself, or the author.

When a movie is about authors being forced to write movies, things get kinda recursive.

I think in raised houses, at a beach, sometimes the "first floor" is considered a basement, and the second floor is the first floor of the house. As compared to a below grade basement.

If the "first floor" is likely to get flooded, you put the house up on stilts.
On land, that "first floor" would get called a "basement" because it was below & not really used.
Did that help?

Not to say that the wing-nuts in Idaho are stupid, but what the fuck kind of editor do they have there? From the story linked above:
"Fifty-4-year-old Richard L. Powell of St. Maries faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine."

"Fifty-4-year-old"? Are you fucking serious? How about "Fifty-four year old..." or even "54 year old"...

Noone haz editor anymore, basement cat writes own stuff, sends it off. Ask basement cat'z owner. Used to be editor. Now wears gorilla suit and begs for cheezburger.

I was more offended by the self-righteous prick on CBS who mentioned Tiger's "anger and language problem" before the final round, and then had the gall to ask him about being upset over a bad shot after he finished. Tiger should have said, "Fuck you, is there a real sportscaster who can ask an intelligent question about golf on your network who wants to talk to me?" What an asshole. Tiger handled him pretty well, however, saying, "I'm not going to act happy when I hit a bad shot."

That's actually a good thing. A perfectionist hard-ass tends to go far in the world because they want to be the best, won't quit and refuse to be intimidated. Whatever else is true, that describes Tiger Woods to a tee. (pun intended)

The problem is most of the people they send are women and children. Our servicemen have honor and would not attack such people. That's the sick thing: Phelps knows his targets are moral and restrained but still attacks them as if they were not. That to me proves that he is simply a narcissistic sociopath.

I think that likely, though I hope it does not happen. Because like I said, he never goes without children with him and while I would not be saddened if someone did violence to Fred Phelps (though I do not advocate such a thing nor would I do it), it would horrify me if a child had to pay the price for his evil.

re: #17 Killgore Trout

Tarantino vs Coen Brothers

If there are any film buffs here I'd love to know who killed the girl in Barton Fink. I assume John Goodman did it to teach John Turturo a lesson but how did he kill her from the next room without waking them? That always bugged me. I assume it was a plot flaw.

I always took it to be a metaphor concerning Fink's own problems and contradictions. One of my favorite films, by the way.

160 ryannon  Mon, Apr 12, 2010 1:53:20am

re: #20 Obdicut

Goodman is the devil, and flames burst along the walls as he runs.

However, it wasn't necessarily him. In a world with the devil running loose, there might be other dark things around.

It could have been Fink, in a moment of madness, and it could have been W.P. Mayhew.

Goodman is a damned soul. As is Fink. It's quite a remarkable film.
