This is funny:
Kentucky Libertarians are now thinking about a 3rd party candidate because Rand Paul isn’t quite libertarian enough for them.
“Despite his pedigree as the son of former Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul, Libertarian Vice Chairman Joshua Koch said Rand Paul has betrayed the party’s values with stands he’s taken, and they were considering finding a candidate to run for the seat.”

They are certainly congratulating themselves for being mainstreamed. It’s still unbelievable to me that the GOP has been taken over by Truthers and conspiracy theorists. The average right wing blog today isn’t much different from what Alex Jones has been doing for years. Glenn Beck did a whole show today on New World Order conspiracies and nobody even notices anymore.

The Whiskey Party
Slogan: “Our Country is Fucked up—You should be too.”
Key Issues: Legalized gambling; legalized prostitution; legalized marijuana; legalized everything; abolishing the speed limit.Mission Statement: With so much of America gone to shit, we need a strong voice supporting the right of citizens to drink/screw/smoke their pain away. Rising like a great cloud of hash smoke to blanket the land, the Whiskey Party will be found wherever a laid-off steelworker is slumped over his seventh beer in a bar; wherever a divorcee chokes her loneliness in a massive bong hit; wherever a man gives a woman his last $40 in food stamps to step on his back in stilettos; the Whiskey Party will be there.

As most of you know I was in the navy for 20 years. There were gays serving then and now and before. Never an uproar, kerfuffle, or any damn thing. Back in the bad ol’ days of the cold war, the reason given for no gays was some with a high security clearance could be blackmailed. In todays world that is probably less likely because society has changed. The congress will have to change the UCMJ, sodomy is still illegal. I roll my eyes at that one because it applied to everyone, not just gays. So if you and the better half were doing anything other than straight sex, you were in violation of the UCMJ too!

I haven’t seen anything today about the permits for that.
I do know that as of YESTERDAY, the Corps of Engineers was studying the ‘environmental impact’ of sand berms while considering whether or not to issue the permits.

Exxon CEO defends offshore drilling
In the wake of the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, government policymakers should not automatically “jump to conclusions” that changes in offshore drilling procedures and regulations are needed, Exxon Mobil Corp. CEO Rex Tillerson said Wednesday.
“There have been very effective procedures in place,” he said. “There have been very effective regulations in place.”
If proper procedures are followed, equipment is maintained and tested, and workers are well-trained, “these things don’t happen,” he said in reference to the spill.
Sounds like Exxon thinks that they can play the BP-didn’t-follow-the-rules card in order to prevent legislation that will affect them.

Oregon State University researchers found that there’s a one in three chance a major earthquake will hit the Pacific Northwest in the next 50 years.
But the chances of a big quake, aren’t the same for the whole region.
The probability of a big one from Newport, Oregon to Northern California is about 37% over the next 50 years. From Seaside north to Vancouver Island in British Columbia, the chance of a powerful earthquake is only 10 to 15 percent.

Ping, read the link Flo provided.
The Roi sent me an e-mail on his last hitch out, where he told me what he thought had happened, and it basically seems to be being borne out as details emerge.
The Company Man has the final decision. But here’s what hubby told me he would have done had he been there:
BP should never have done what they were likely doing. Our personnel did nothing wrong and if I was the Sr. Engr there I would not have allowed this to be done without objection. What I would have done is explain to the Co. man the dangers and then refuse to be where I would normally be until right before the seawater would be at the flowline. Which I could calculate. I would also not let any of my employees be there either.
On this rig, the Senior Eng. had finished his shift and was sleeping; and the junior engineer, the 28-year-old who was killed, probably was not experienced enough to know how far he could go in standing up to the company man. Hubby tells me his company is writing procedures for their employees, as to how to handle situations and what they are allowed to do, by company policy, when faced with dangerous decisions.

Dodd blames Bush for oil spill
Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) on Tuesday said partial blame for the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico lies with the Bush administration.
Asked on the “Imus in the Morning” program on Fox Business Network if the Obama administration is to blame for the damaging fallout of the spill, the Connecticut senator took aim at the previous administration.
“Well, you know, they come into office a year ago with all of this. And so, after the last eight years —” Dodd said, until being interrupted by host Don Imus, who said “Oh, come on.”
“It was ‘drill, drill, drill.’ I think you were quoting ‘Drill, drill, drill’ a few months ago,” Dodd fired back.
“Don’t try to lump me with Sarah Palin,” Imus responded. “And don’t use that lame excuse to me about the Bush administration. Have you lost your mind?”
Yes he has.

Who’s keeping up with the “kill shot”. Read on one blog that something just happened (a blow up of the riser?)
Nope. What happened was enough mud precipitated to cloud up the water. It is about twice the weight of the sea water. It is clearer now.
Of course, the orifices through which the mud is shooting out are being slowly eroded and thus the rate of leakage is increasing. This is fully expected.
They have not blown up the riser and the mud injection is continuing.

CIA unit’s wacky idea: Depict Saddam as gay
During planning for the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the CIA’s Iraq Operations Group kicked around a number of ideas for discrediting Saddam Hussein in the eyes of his people.
One was to create a video purporting to show the Iraqi dictator having sex with a teenage boy, according to two former CIA officials familiar with the project.
“It would look like it was taken by a hidden camera,” said one of the former officials. “Very grainy, like it was a secret videotaping of a sex session.”

U.S. debt reaches level at which economic growth begins to slow
The level of U.S. debt has reached a point at which economic growth traditionally begins to slow, a bipartisan fiscal commission making recommendations to the White House and Congress was told Wednesday. The gross U.S. debt is approaching a level equivalent to 90 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, the level at which growth has historically declined, said Carmen Reinhart, a University of Maryland economist.
When gross debt hits 90 percent of GDP, Reinhart told the commission during a hearing in the Capitol, growth “deteriorates markedly.” Median growth rates fall by 1 percent, and average growth rates fall “considerably more,” she said.
Reinhart said the commission shouldn’t wait to put in place a plan to rein in deficits.
“I have no positive news to give,” she said. “Fiscal austerity is something nobody wants, but it is a fact.
Gross debt is at 89 percent and will reach 90 percent by the end of the year, said Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.), a member of the commission.
Another commission member, Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), described the situation: “Essentially, the needle is hitting the red zone in respect to economic growth.”
Change!

BP personnel were the decision-makers.
156 | Bagua Wed, May 26, 2010 8:29:47pm |
Tonight’s briefing from the BP spokesman gave support to our earlier observation that it appeared that mud, and not oil and gas are flowing out the riser on top of the BOP.
This is, as we discussed earlier, a promising sign because this could only occur if the mud pressure was sufficient to hold back the oil and gas pressure from the well. It is even more promising that they apparently achieved this using 40% of their planned injection rate. This leaves more headroom to increase flow rate of the mud as necessary.
What would throw water on this is if the obstruction is lower in the BOP beneath the mud injection site, and thus the mud will just free-flow up and out the leaks.
Alternatively, we hope the mud is actually being forced down the well as intended, but can only guess what is happening beneath the BOP.

re: #142 sagehen
Betcha that $500,000 dead-man switch is looking like it would have been a bargain.
The single most effective way to ensure this never happens again, would be to make all companies involved pay until it hurts. If BP gets a $50 billion bill, a few hundred thou will seem like a bargain of an insurance policy.

Change!
It’s a tipping point—there has never been any country in history that did not suffer after hitting that 90% mark. Over and over during the housing boom, we were told it’s different this time. Why should this debt ratio rule not apply to us? We and all the EU countries in similar or worse shape are whistling past the graveyard if we think we can sustain this kind of debt spending. It is not different this time—the US is not somehow special and protected from overspending.

I totally get that, but it is one of those areas where men and women are so incredibly different from each other.
I would never dream of getting a wife a vacuum cleaner/dishwasher/dryer etc. for an anniversary gift, yet I (and most men) would be more than happy to receive a power tool as a gift, knowing full well it will be used for many “honeydew” projects.
Yes, they are.
I used to feel guilty about getting the Roi something less than what I wanted, or getting him that power tool he said he wanted. I finally figured out that we’re just different that way.
I want something personal and pretty.
He’s happy with a tool that will come in handy to fix something. Usually because I want it fixed. I’ve come to think that fixing things because we ladies want them fixed is what men do to communicate that they care about us.

re: #136 Cannadian Club Akbar
I saw pics on TV while at work tonight (CNN, I think) Is that why it looked like 4 plumes were going on. Is the reason you posted the reason?
That is my belief. The mud will erode/cut metal at high pressure. More so than the oil, though the oil has sand in it and acts as a sand blaster. The other key factor is the pressure, you could bathe in a barrel of oil and only get sticky, but shoot it through a high pressure jet and it will cut right through you. The additional pressure would increase the erosion of the metal with both the oil and the mud.
So it was expected, which is why BP announced that viewers should not draw conclusions from what they see, and I have been highlighting this as expected.
They are trying to determine the minimum mud injection rate necessary to start pushing mud down the hole, then just let it slowly fill the well. This to avoid doing more damage to the BOP and riser by trying to fill it quicker with more pressure, and also to avoid damage to the well below the BOP.

Yeah. This is another angle on the conundrum we’re in:
marketwatch.com
We aren’t yet out of the woods from the most recent crisis. I’m hopeful that the experience of the Great Depression, and the current fed chair’s expertise in that era, will help us avoid the policy mistakes from that era. Still, there is still a good chance things will follow the same path. Most people only think of the crash as the Great Depression—they do not recall from history the short lived weak recovery one year on, followed by the real Great Depression shortly thereafter.

The margin is not that large. That was why all the grandstanding claims of profiteering when gas hit $4/gallon was just that—grandstanding. But actually holding the company responsible for the full cost/impact of this will change behavior of BP and their competitors. If the cost of not following safe drilling practices far outweighs the cost of the disaster, the companies will consider the spending on safety a prudent insurance expense.

The major entitlements aren’t going to the cadillac driving welfare queens, their going to the gray haired baby boomers who will scream bloody murder if you take away their medicare and social security. The Secret, 700-Million-Gallon Oil Fix That Worked — and Might Save the Gulf
There’s a potential solution to the Gulf oil spill that neither BP, nor the federal government, nor anyone — save a couple intuitive engineers — seems willing to try. As The Politics Blog reported on Tuesday in an interview with former Shell Oil president John Hofmeister, the untapped solution involves using empty supertankers to suck the spill off the surface, treat and discharge the contaminated water, and either salvage or destroy the slick.…The suck-and-salvage technique was developed in desperation across the Arabian Gulf following a spill of mammoth proportions — 700 million gallons — that has until now gone unreported, as Saudi Arabia is a closed society, and its oil company, Saudi Aramco, remains owned by the House of Saud. But in 1993 and into ‘94, with four leaking tankers and two gushing wells, the royal family had an environmental disaster nearly sixty-five times the size of Exxon Valdez on its hands, and it desperately needed a solution.
Pozzi, an American engineer then in charge of Saudi Aramco’s east-west pipeline in the technical support and maintenance services division, was part of a team given cart blanche to control the blowout. Pozzi had dealt with numerous spills over the years without using chemicals, and had tried dumping flour into the oil, then scooping the resulting tar balls from the surface. “You ever cooked with flour? Absorbent, right?” Pozzi says. Next, he’d dumped straw into the spills; also highly absorbent, but then you’ve got a lot of straw to clean up. This spill was going to require a much larger, more sustained solution. And fast.
That’s when Pozzi and his team came up with the idea of having empty ships park near the Saudi spill and pull the oil off the water. This part of the operation went on for six months, with the mop-up operations lasting for several years more. Pozzi says that 85 percent of the spilled oil was recovered, and it is precisely this strategy that he wants to see deployed in the Gulf of Mexico.

In the Press conference earlier, they indicated that much of the surface oil is being dispersed or burned; this procedure is for surface oil, and whatever they’re doing now seems to be taking care of much of it, as I understood from the press conference.

OK — then we agree mostly. The $50 billion in cost to the economy may not be far off the true cost of this disaster. When entire industries lose business, the economic losses will be huge. BP needs to pay not just the cost of the cleanup, but the economic costs to fishing, tourism, and any other related industries that supply those directly affected.

They are much more profitable than the average industry. They rank 7th with a 11.5% ROR. And I don’t know why you are so quick to dismiss transaction volume — size does matter.

Because the costs of doing business vary greatly from industry to industry, so it’s an important factor

Reads like a conspiracy in the making to me. Perhaps it’s a fine idea but there’s a big difference between a surface spill in the Arabian Gulf and a deep water leak. The Arabian Gulf is also Much smaller than the Gulf of Mexico and the waters are calmer. Just because it might work in theory doesn’t mean it would work in practice. I’m sure they’ve been flooded with numerous ideas each of which its proponents claim to be the smoking gun.

Red Cross Defends First Aid Courses for Taliban
The international Red Cross said Wednesday it would continue giving first aid training and kits to Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, despite drawing angry e-mails from around the world and criticism from an Afghan official after the practice was publicized.
The International Committee of the Red Cross trained “over 70 members of the armed opposition” in first aid last month, along with more than 100 Afghan police and civilians, including taxi drivers.
The courses started in 2006 and the neutral group will continue as long as they are needed, said Red Cross spokesman Christian Cardon.
“It’s the core of the ICRC’s mandate to make sure that people are cured whether they are from one side or the other side,” he told The Associated Press.
Britain’s Guardian newspaper on Tuesday quoted an unidentified official in Kandahar’s local government as criticizing the first aid training, saying the Taliban did “not deserve to be treated like humans.”

NJD - honestly, neither the Fed nor State Gov’t have nearly the expertise that BP does. And by law, BP is responsible for fixing this mess.
With the exception of the Corps of Engineers which is delaying the issuance of those permits, it seems to me the feds and the state have done, basically, as much as they can do.
I thought it was silly when folks blamed Bush for Katrina and aftermath; and I think it’s just as silly now, to blame the Obama administration for this event. This was caused by BP making seriously bad decisions; and they should be held accountable for it without punishing the other oil companies who have been doing business in the Gulf for many decades without an incident.
But it’s not a problem that’s the fault of “lack of leadership in Washington”.

Nearly all of the cuts—individual rates, capital gains, dividends, estate tax—are set to expire after 2010.[1]
Yes, they will “naturally” expire, unless Congress renews them, but Obama hasn’t decided on any tax cut apart from the income tax — that was his compromise in the 2008 campaign. You can’t have it both ways — all medium term doomsday deficit projections count on Bush tax cuts not expiring.

The U.S. Gulf of Mexico offshore rig count is unchanged from last week, and 77 rigs remain under contract out of the fleet of 123 rigs currently deployed in the area. Fleet utilization is 62.6 percent. The ongoing oil spill control efforts and related drilling permit moratorium in the region are starting to have an effect on the region’s offshore rig market. Some rigs have not been able to begin planned drilling programs, and operators and rig owners alike are considering their options for keeping rigs working or releasing them from their contracts.
I’m not certain of their location.
The Roi works primarily on deepwater rigs, and he’s worked south of Galveston almost to Mexico, 150 or so miles out. Right now he’s 100 miles out.

Anything that Obama would do right now would be strictly for PR reasons. And he (and his security entourage) would be getting in the way of the folks who are working to do the cleanup. I’m certain that he receives daily briefings, and is in communication with the people he needs to be communicating with (just as Bush probably was after Katrina) - it doesn’t matter where he physically is. Somali terror member may be heading to Texas
HOUSTON (AP) — U.S. Homeland Security officials have asked Houston authorities to watch for a member of a Somalia-based terror group who may be coming to Texas through Mexico.
The federal department issued an alert last week for a suspected member of the al-Shabaab group, which has declared allegiance to al-Qaida.
Harris County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Christina Garza said Wednesday she could not share details. U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Lloyd Easterling says he “cannot discuss specific intelligence regarding individual groups.”
The alert was issued after federal prosecutors in San Antonio added new charges earlier this month against a 24-year-old Somali man, Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane, who had been picked up in Brownsville in 2008.
He pleaded not guilty May 14 in federal court in San Antonio to three counts of immigration fraud.
Garza confirmed a connection Wednesday between Dhakane’s case and the Homeland Security alert but would not elaborate.

Shrug. Like in the NY-23 discussion, you are now turning into an asshole.
There are items in the federal budget that “expire” every year, and every year they are renovated like clockwork. The CBO and other entities are forced to assume in their projections that the Bush tax cuts will expire. Most doomsday projections don’t. As I said before, you can’t have it both ways.

A 54 year old woman had a heart attack and was taken to
the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience.
Seeing God she asked ‘Is my time up?’
God said, ‘No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and
8 days to live.’
Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and
have a face-lift, liposuction, breast implants and a tummy tuck.
She even had someone come in and change her hair color and brighten her teeth!
Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it.
After her last operation, she was released from the hospital.
While crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance.
Arriving in front of God, she demanded, ‘I thought you
said I had another 43 years? Why didn’t you pull me from
out of the path of the ambulance?’
(You’ll love this)
- God replied: ‘I didn’t recognize you.’

WTF is Ron Paul talking about?
The “Freedom Movement of the last decade” is really just tea parties that started in early 2009.
“One world government” is really just Joe Biden saying something dumb about the EU.
And the “political realignment” is just right wing anger following losses in the last two elections; the pendulum swinging back to the GOP in Congress isn’t the same as a true realignment.

OK, nighty-night time for me.
But I shall leave y’all with these - How Do These People Survive? My personal fave is #4.
ONE
Recently, when I went to McDonald’s I saw on the menu that you could have an order of 6, 9 or 12 Chicken McNuggets.
I asked for a half dozen nuggets.
‘We don’t have half dozen nuggets,’ said the teenager at the counter.
‘You don’t?’ I replied.
‘We only have six, nine, or twelve,’ was the reply.
‘So I can’t order half dozen nuggets, but I can order six?’
‘That’s right.’
So I shook my head and ordered six McNuggets
(Unbelievable but sadly true…)
TWO
I was checking out at the local Wal-Mart with just a few items and the lady behind me put her things on the belt close to mine. I picked up one of those ‘dividers’ that they keep by the cash register and placed it between our things so they wouldn’t get mixed.
After the girl had scanned all of my items, she picked up the ‘divider’, looking it all over for the bar code so she could scan it.
Not finding the bar code, she said to me, ‘Do you know how much this is?’
I said to her ‘I’ve changed my mind; I don’t think I’ll buy that today.’
She said ‘OK,’ and I paid her for the things and left.
She had no clue to what had just happened.
THREE
A woman at work was seen putting a credit card into her floppy drive and pulling it out very quickly.
When I inquired as to what she was doing, she said she was shopping on the Internet and they kept asking for a credit card number, so she was using the ATM ‘thingy’
(keep shuddering!!)
FOUR
I recently saw a distraught young lady weeping beside her car. ‘Do you need some help?’ I asked.
She replied, ‘I knew I should have replaced the battery to this remote door unlocker. Now I can’t get into my car. Do you think they (pointing to a distant convenience store) would have a battery to fit this?’
‘Hmmm, I don’t know. Do you have an alarm, too?’ I asked.
‘No, just this remote thingy,’ she answered, handing it and the car keys to me. As I took the key and manually unlocked the door, I replied, ‘Why don’t you drive over there and check about the batteries. It’s a long walk…..’
PLEASE just lay down before you hurt yourself !!!
FIVE
Several years ago, we had an Intern who was none too swift. One day she was typing and turned to a secretary and said, ‘I’m almost out of typing paper. What do I do?’ ‘Just use paper from the photocopier’, the secretary told her. With that, the intern took her last remaining blank piece of paper, put it on the photocopier and proceeded to make five ‘blank’ copies.
Brunette, by the way !!

A mother calls 911 very worried asking the dispatcher if she needs to take her kid to the emergency room, the kid had eaten ants. The dispatcher tells her to give the kid some Benadryl and he should be fine, the mother says, ‘I just gave him some ant killer……’
Dispatcher: ‘Rush him in to emergency !’

I didn’t forget anything.
I suspect these numbers change over time, and aren’t static from year to year.
They are never too far from the top — they ranked 2nd in 2008, with 23% ROR, for instance. As you point out, it’s not like we’re getting rid of our oil dependency soon.
But for now:
I guess I was wondering why the focus on and hate for the profits earned by the oil industry, which is important to our way of life, keeping us getting to work, keeping supplies moved around the country to places where they’re needed, whereas Internet Services and Retailing is probably more important to the FUN we have. Why don’t we demand that the folks who sell us our games take a smaller profit, making it less expensive for us to have fun?
I guess people often get more pissed off at oil companies for several reasons, among them the relative lack of competition in the sector compared to other industries (people used to hate Microsoft too!), and the fact that it seems hard to hold them accountable for disasters that are their responsibility. The $75 million damage liability is a good example.

re: #254 reine.de.tout
Absolutely. The danger here is that well meaning politicians will vow not to make Bush’s mistake (real or imagined) and take some drastic, heroic action that ends up causing far more damage than good. Show leadership, rah, rah. Let’s show those Oil Companies/Republicans/Democrats/Bankers/Feds/etc. we mean business. The result could be a bigger disaster.
Partisan politics and the superficial, agenda driven media are dangerous influences on what should be a science and engineering based exercise similar to a moon landing.
I’ll take the experts opinion over some grandstanding creationist Governor any day.
And as the the super-tanker hoover:
Right now, despite the unknown damage being done or what might happen, we simply do not have vast amounts of crude oil floating into the coastal areas.
A great deal is being dispersed, both by the dispersant and by the mile long journey up. Of what hits the surface, a good percentage is being skimmed off, weather permitting. Or sprayed with dispersant. No doubt plan B is to let more hit the surface to skim off.
The Persian Gulf leak in ‘91 was very different. Tanker, terminals, and surface wells leaked the oil. It didn’t travel up through a mile of sea water. That resulted in more of an oil slick. The Gulf spill is more like ropey patches of an oil-emulsion. If they cut off the dispersant more will reach the surface to cause a slick, but, the journey up and the high methane content will still change its consistency.

And, IMO, they’re wrong to do so, just as folks were wrong to criticize Bush for being at his place in Texas before and after Katrina.
If he needs to make a decision, he can make it from anywhere.
With record low poll ratings Obama could use a good PR opportunity.
What kind of cleanup is happening in the Gulf right now?

But hey, Alex Jones is apparently right about one thing: there was a CIA plan to portray Saddam as gay.
Shiiit.
Saddam Hussein wasn’t gay, but his boyfriend was.

According to the press conference, there is not right this minute a lot of oil remaining on the surface - it is being taken care of.
The problem is the continued leakage, and the oil that is under the surface, and things are being done about both of those.
What is stopping the US gov’t from attempting to clean up the oil in the Gulf is:
1. By law, BP must clean it up.
2. BP has the expertise and equipment; the US gov’t does not.
And Bagua will have additional information, I hope, he’s really on top of this.

I think the US government should be working on cleaning up as much oil floating in the Gulf as they possibly can. I’m not blaming Obama for the accident but you have to admit that attending 3 fundraisers in California yesterday and going on his second vacation tomorrow during the worst ecological disaster in US history doesn’t look good to the American people.
I bet you can also connect his recent dive in the polls to the perceived lack of action on this spill. Even top Democrats are criticizing him.
There are currently 1,300 vessels involved in containing the Gulf oil leak.
1.85 million feet of containment boom deployed, another 300,000 feet available
1.25 million feet of sorbent boom deployed and 1.02 million feet available.
Oily water recovered over 11.1 million gallons
Over a million gallons of dispersant deployed.

Heavy girls likelier to have sex early
Parents concerned about their daughters putting on extra pounds may have a new reason to worry. Overweight girls are more likely to start having sex early, to have multiple partners during their teen years, and to eschew condoms compared to thinner teens, a new study shows. And the situation worsens as the number of excess pounds goes up.
South Carolina researchers found that obese girls were almost three times as likely as others to have had sex before age 13 and 30 percent more likely to have had sex with more than three partners during their teen years, according to the study presented this month at the annual meeting of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Girls who were simply overweight had a lower, but still significant, risk of starting sex early. Compared to normal weight teens, they were 60 percent more likely to begin sex before age 13 and 30 percent were likely to have had sex with more than three partners.
Does this mean fat girls are hornier than thin girls?

Big Spat on Rig Preceded Explosion
KENNER, La.—More details emerged Wednesday about a disagreement between employees of rig operator Transocean Ltd. and oil giant BP PLC over how to begin shutting down the well just hours before it exploded in the Gulf of Mexico last month.
Testimony on Wednesday about the disagreement, in a hearing held by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Minerals Management Service, which jointly regulate offshore drilling, was likely to bring increased scrutiny to the decisions BP made aboard the rig the day of the explosion, April 20.
There was also likely to be more focus on whether Transocean should have done more to ensure proper procedures were carried out.
Douglas H. Brown, Transocean’s chief mechanic on the Deepwater Horizon rig, said key representatives from both companies had a “skirmish” during an 11 a.m. meeting on April 20. Less than 11 hours later, the well had a blowout, an uncontrolled release of oil and gas, killing 11 workers.
Mr. Brown said Transocean’s crew leaders—including the rig operator’s top manager, Jimmy W. Harrell—strongly objected to a decision by BP’s top representative, or “company man,” over how to start removing heavy drilling fluid and replacing it with lighter seawater from a riser pipe connected to the well head. Such pipes act as conduits between the rig and the wellhead at the ocean floor, and carry drilling fluid in and out of the well.
Removing heavy drilling fluid prior to temporarily sealing up a well and abandoning it is normal, but questions have emerged about whether the crew started the process without taking other precautionary measures against gas rising into the pipe.
It wasn’t clear what Mr. Harrell objected to specifically about BP’s instructions, but the rig’s primary driller, Dewey Revette, and tool pusher, Miles Randall Ezell, both of Transocean, also disagreed with BP, Mr. Brown said. However, BP was in charge of the operation and the BP representative prevailed, Mr. Brown said.
“The company man was basically saying, ‘This is how it’s gonna be,’ ” said Mr. Brown, who didn’t recall the name of the BP representative in question.

It’s not estrogen, it’s a desire to fit in socially.

He’s happy with a tool that will come in handy to fix something. Usually because I want it fixed. I’ve come to think that fixing things because we ladies want them fixed is what men do to communicate that they care about us.

Bullshit. Bush could have mobilized National Guard and FEMA before the storm hit, like he did in Florida for his fucking brother in 2004 during Hurricane Charley.
Pretty good, non-partisan review of the facts. Seems like you’ve been overcome with partisanship. Plenty of blame to go around—and Bush did pre-authorize positioning of resources before the hurricane hit at the request of governor Blanco. Execution? Not so great, but it was only two days before the landfall that the potential scale of the impact was evident to Blanco and Bush. All levels of government deserve some blame. But note that Mississippi was just as devastated—albeit without the added challenge of a large city being inundated—and did not have the same coordination issues.
I think that Blanco and Bush both got some unfair criticism, though the agencies each were responsible for performed miserably. Nagin on the other hand comes out looking grossly incompetent according to factcheck.org’s synopsis.

Yep. Governors have the authority to mobilize their own state national guard units.
For State emergencies, the Governor is the Chief Commanding Officer of the State National Guard, and they can be mobilized only by order of the Governor.
For national emergencies, the President can ‘nationalize” the National Guard and call units into military service. But the President cannot mobilize the National Guard for a state emergency - that is the Governor’s call.
As far as federal intervention in emergencies - again, can only be done by request of the Governor of a state, who must make a specific request through appropriate channels; a cry for help during a TV interview is not sufficient. There are procedures and protocols for this. And Blanco did not make that request. Her staff, in fact, refused a call to her from FEMA, because she ‘was napping’. So …

No… I assure you, take it from someone who is very close to this subject, more times than never these young girls are dealing with issues of self-esteem and acceptance by their peers, and they will turn to a number of different outlets to feel wanted. Even the addiction to food is a self-esteem issue, a self-medicating situation, the same as sex can be used to self medicate.

Why do estrogen levels rise?During puberty, it’s normal for levels of estrogen to rise. That’s because this hormone fuels changes in a young girl’s body. For example, it plays a role in the development of breasts, a more mature curved figure, fuller hips, and pubic and underarm hair.
In addition, high levels of estrogen are seen in women who are extremely overweight.
I am not trying to dump on anyone here, I am just saying there are biological reasons as well as social reasons at play.

I’m aware of the role hormones play, but I’m also aware of the strong social tendency to pathologize fat. I’m not actually saying that there may not be a hormonal factor in this information but:
1. I tend to believe that the social factor is much, much more relevant and
2. I can see the social implications of this, and they’re the same social implications that go with any weight issue.

Reminds me of my friend. For about 5 minutes he thought he had Eye Cancer, but turns out he’d just passed out and smashed it.
His story is much happier tho’, I guess

I think it will have to be rescheduled, yes, I don’t think you can have a brain aneurysm on Wednesday, and host a bridal shower on Saturday. Not even if you’re a high-powered attorney with a strong sense of social propriety, which this gal is.
She’s getting married in July, her sister, my friend, is getting married in October. The shower was for the sister.
The seven-year-old niece asked my friend if Mommy was going to to die.
ARRGGH.
Oh hell. Tough situ. Hoping for the best….

It’s just that at times like this, I remember an essay I once read, by a fat woman who was told that she might have brain cancer. The doctor hectored her about losing weight for several minutes before bothering to tell her that her scans were clean.
People behave weirdly when fat comes up. And I can’t blame it on hormones, because it happens about other people’s fat too.

re: #453 SanFranciscoZionist
The other weird piece is how people that aren’t really fat, think they actually are.
That part is maddening.

Well, one of our mutual friends is listing off everyone she knows who’s had an aneurysm and been fine. One of these, apparently, had his aneurysm at a raucous party where everyone’d been drinking heavily, and when he fell over and stayed down, they thought nothing of it. Didn’t realize there was a problem until someone tried to wake him up the next MORNING to pour him into a car that was going his way.
And he recovered.
So Friend’s Sister should be fine, right? RIGHT, GODDAMNIT?

I think we are on the same page, albeit reading things a bit differently. I do not dispute that the social factors play a huge part in the topic we are discussing. In fact, I would say that they are undeniable.
Still, I do believe some are not giving enough weight er, credit to the mighty significance that certain biological factors have in this subject.
Folks are always quick to say that hormones easily override logic when it comes to the activities of post-pubescent humans. Why would the same not be true here?

Meh. I have fat issues. I have seen some really bad shit go down over this international obsession of ours.
When my BFF from high school was seventeen, she was, I don’t know, a size twelve maybe. Five-fivish. Her mother took her to the doctor because she was ‘so fat’, and the doctor put her on a thousand-calorie-a-day diet. This is a teenage girl with a packed schedule, mind you.
She became anorexic her freshman year of college, naturally, and thank God her hallmates staged an intervention and got her to counseling before things got too bad.
We’re not rational about this. Thin has become a idol, and a currency. It’s damn scary to me.

If you say so. My intent here is not to be offensive nor demeaning towards women or the overweight, nor to stir up any controversy. I am simply relaying the biological information that I have learned regarding excess weight, the way that effects hormones, and the way hormones effect behavior.
Right now, as I type, I am overweight. And I do notice a difference in that department.

She’s survived over twelve hours already, and that’s got to be a good sign. I don’t know what happens next. Her fiance is there, and her sister and the sister’s fiance drove up, and her mom and her mom’s friends live in the area. So lots of support. And she’s a young, fit woman, although I don’t know how much that counts for.
Our mutual friend and I kept coming up with things we’d seen on House, or the Discovery Channel, until we decided to stop.
My friend’s fiance is a nurse, as is their mom, so I’m hoping that will help in negotiating all the doctor/hospital stuff.

Kills you much quicker.
Another friend recalls that the only time in her adolescence that her family didn’t criticize her for her weight was when she was bulimic. Then, they were thrilled, and bought her lots of new clothes.
This is what we do to our daughters. So they’ll be ‘healthy’.

Yes and the standard, it 13 year old models in Vogue. I don’t know about you, but , me, I never looked like that. Not when I was…pick your age her.
And, at, *ahem* an older age now, I would not WANT to look like a starved 13 year old ( even if I could..)

So… the FRC is worried that men will be subject to the same treatment that they brush off as “you probably deserved it” when women complain about it?
Are you saying that having more homosexual rape would be a good thing for society? Am I strangely kind of agreeing with you?

It’s there, sister. I’ve posted a couple of links, I suppose I could dig up more. But this isn’t really something we have to resolve to each others satisfaction this evening, is it?
I’ve been rather health conscious over the last decade or so, and have read much on the subject of weight, diet, exercise, and so on. Still, I am by no means an expert.
I was doing quite well until my hernia surgery (which forever limits a variety of exercises), and I will be the first to admit that I am in the shape I am in now due to laziness and lack of motivation.

That’s just as wrong as telling people “fat is beautiful” (though it can be on some, I won’t lie). You are right, being underweight will kill you faster than being overweight. But both are just as unhealthy.

Rand Paul has also been a frequent guest on Alex Jones.
Jones, who sees big government conspiracies elsewhere, as well, has been an enthusiastic supporter of both Ron and Rand Paul. Both men have appeared on his show, which, of course, doesn’t mean they endorse his 9/11 views and other opinions. (Last December, Rand Paul’s campaign communications director, Chris Hightower, resigned after a blogger exposed Hightower as an anti-Christian who believed that the US government was responsible for 9/11. The Paul campaign, asked by a local newspaper, if Paul agreed with Hightower on 9/11, said it was a “complicated situation” with “truth on both sides.”) But Rand Paul has shown sympathy for Jones’ overall view of a world of global conspiracies, and he has expressed support for some of Jones’ unconventional ideas.
During a July 23, 2009 show, Jones, decrying the Wall Street bailout, asked Paul, “This isn’t really socialism….Isn’t this more akin to fascism?” Paul replied, “You’re exactly right.” Later on the show, while Jones was denouncing cap-and-trade legislation (which he says could lead to “toilet paper taxes”) and calling for investigating Al Gore, Paul noted that should the climate bill become law, “we will have an army of armed EPA agents—thousands of them.” These EPA troopers, according to Paul, would be free to burst into homes and apartments to determine if they were meeting energy-efficiency standards.
Paul also didn’t say anything when Jones raised an odd charge about the Federal Reserve. During a rant about the Fed, Jones claimed “we know that the Federal Reserve was clearly implicated in the kidnapping of a congressman’s baby” and commended Paul for his “courage” in taking on the Fed. Paul replied, “I appreciate that,” and he told Jones that he could not mount his Senate run “without you.”
Throughout this particular show, Paul graciously accepted Jones’ support for his pending Senate candidacy. He gave the impression that he and Jones were like-minded foes of the globalists and international financiers plotting to undermine, if not destroy, the United States for their own gain. And Paul noted that career politicians are no match for this enemy force: “the ones that evolve to the top of the Republican and the Democratic Party end up being the people who don’t believe in anything…and they get pushed around by the New World Order types.”
