The Palin-Paul Divergence

Politics • Views: 2,529

The strange uneasy tea party coalition of Ron Paul paleo-libertarians and religious right conservatives is crumbling, as their irreconcilable differences on foreign policy emerge.

(CNN) – Sarah Palin and Ron Paul are two darlings of the Tea Party movement, but their views on military spending could hardly be more different.

Palin, the former Republican vice presidential nominee, invokes the importance of a strong and robust military in speech after speech, while Paul, the libertarian Republican who rocketed to the national scene during the 2008 presidential race, has long argued for drastic cuts in defense spending.

It’s a schism that has long existed within the GOP’s fold – between hawkish conservatives and spend-weary Republicans – but one which the Tea Party movement’s diverse coalition and varied figure heads have specifically laid bare over the past year.

The division is especially apparent this week as Paul, whom many in the Tea Party movement hope mounts another bid for president, is teaming up with Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, a Democrat, to call for substantial cuts in U.S. military spending.

Civilian clashes with UN soldiers rise in Lebanon’s Hezbollah heartland

A violent clash between Lebanese civilians and French United Nations peacekeepers last weekend has cast into doubt the durability of a key UN peacekeeping mission even as the war drums continue to beat between Israel and Lebanon’s militant Shiite Hezbollah.

The UN Security Council is expected to convene Friday at the request of France to discuss rising tensions in the past two months between the peacekeeping force, known as UNIFIL, and residents of southern Lebanese villages. The southerners accuse the French UNIFIL contingent in particular of exceeding its mandate and “snooping” on Hezbollah in their villages.

Celebrity Deathmatch! Good fight! Good night!

Frankly, I’d have to side with Palin on this one - strong defense requires spending and that’s preferable to the inward-looking, isolationist nonsense coming from the Paulians, which ignores that every time the US had done so, things went sour all over the world - and in ways that resulted in mass carnage and a monstrous death toll. Isolationism will not solve the nation’s problems, and may actually contribute to further problems down the road.

It’s bad jobu for the US to be isolationist - and Europe and the rest of the world sees it as their chance to push their own agendas and engage in expansionism and violence while the US looks askance and in effect says “what, me worry? We’ve got 2 oceans to protect us. “

34 researchok  Fri, Jul 9, 2010 12:23:02pm

There is another distinct difference between Palin and Paul.

Ron Paul attracts some of the most vicious and vile racists and bigots to his cause. Not only has he not distanced himself from them in any meaningful way, he continues to attract even more of them.

Sooner or later, he’ll have to address the issue. It won’t end well for him.

I believe the media will force it on him. His supporters can only refer to Jews as ‘vermin’ so many times before the media takes notice.

To date he’s said he can’t control what his supporters believe. That doesn’t wash. He’s going to have to distance himself from them. He’s going to be held to the same standards as other GOP’ers and Dems.

I don’t know, I’m on the fence about it. I do support a strong defense and have shaken my head at suggestions that we return to a state of isolationism and gut our military. At the same time, I gotta agree that I’m getting a might disgusted with some of “allies” who take the defense our soldiers provide and the dollars those same soldiers pump into their economies for granted. It might be time to take a good, long, hard look at the “empire” we’ve created since the end of WWII and consider thinning the herd.

If your thesis is that when the US is isolationist, then countries in Europe tend to be expansionist, I’d say that was meaningless. There isn’t enough history to make claims about patterns like that.

Alright, but the conflict in the Balkans was a while ago, and it was “internal” (if you want to consider Europe as a block). So Europe “pushing its agenda and engage in expansionism and violence” sounds kind of over the top.

As for Russia, the violence and threats of expansionism tend to take place in Asia — though admittedly its relations with Ukraine certainly have potential.

In Louisiana, politics keeps getting in the way of science: Jarvis DeBerry

is the Jindal administration willing to accept criticism that its plans for sand berms and rock dikes don’t meet scientific rigor? You be the judge:

“No one can convince us that rocks in the water are more dangerous than oil,” Jindal said in a speech in New Orleans on Tuesday. “That is absolutely ridiculous. The only people who believe that are the bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., who can’t see the oil, smell the oil or touch the oil.”

Denise Reed, a wetlands specialist and director of the Pontchartrain Institute for Environmental Sciences, works in New Orleans, not Washington, and she’s not a bureaucrat. She told The Times-Picayune the state’s plan could result in “additional erosion and more pathways for oil to move in from the Gulf.” She told The New York Times, “There was very strong scientific backing for not doing this. This could really devastate our barrier shoreline, our first line of defense.”

If the scientists are wrong, the governor and his administration officials ought to be able to counter them in a way that still acknowledges their expertise. But Jindal — whose Rhodes scholarship is well in his rearview — seems more interested in playing the role of the populist anti-intellectual. And one of the first rules of populist anti-intellectualism is to connect an opponent to Washington and accuse him or her of being a dreaded bureaucrat. Jindal seems unconcerned that some of his critics are local scientists and that he’s a former bureaucrat himself.

Kelly: Family feud may test boundaries of inheritance law

At issue is a tradition as basic to families as wedding rings and vacation photographs: Who ultimately has a right to an inheritance?

On one side stands the Cohen family of Hudson News fame, whose once-vibrant patriarch in Englewood is now rendered nearly immobile and virtually speechless by a degenerative neurological disorder.

On the other side is his former son-in-law, Ronald Perelman, a legendary corporate takeover billionaire and Revlon chairman with a take-no-prisoners reputation in his financial dealings. He’s trying to convince a court to declare the elderly Cohen incapacitated.

Perelman says his daughter — Cohen’s granddaughter — is entitled to half of the family’s fortune, which has been estimated to be as much as $800 million by Fortune magazine. To get the money, Perelman wants to go where few court cases have ever ventured: He wants to rewrite the will of a man who isn’t dead.

Perelman’s lawsuit, which he filed as executor of the estate of his ex-wife, was dismissed a year ago by a Bergen County judge, who just last month sanctioned his lawyers for “overly aggressive” tactics and ruled that one of Perelman’s central legal claims was “frivolous.”

Perelman is appealing.

Where this case will lead is an open question. Already, this bitter conflict has touched on such issues as a family’s right to privacy, its ability to protect its business interests, and broader ethical and legal questions about the rights of the disabled and elderly to make decisions in their wills.

An accordion player was getting home late one night after a long gig. Her accordion was in the back of her car and the thought of carrying the heavy case up to her 3rd floor apt was too daunting, so just this once she decided to leave it in the car and retrieve it in the morning. The next day she goes downstairs and, sure enough, the back window of her car is smashed………and there are two more accordions in the back seat.

Hey. Don’t you know. There’s never and corruption, waste or overspending in the military. Everything that goes into research and development is on the level and the final product is always the perfect system that meets every general’s requirements in the Pentagon.

I was recently in a home theater where the owner had a 200 watt tube amp dedicated for the front left speaker, one for the center channel, one for the front right. Another handled the rest of the left on the side, another handled the rest of the right side, and one more for the speakers in the back. It was impressive. Unfortunately it was in the middle of a dinner party, so I couldnt take it for a drive.

The Navy is shrinking in terms of people, ships and aircraft. Army is getting bigger as is the Marine Corps (smallest service by far). Not sure about the Air Force, but the budgets for the services have been getting smaller over the years with a big chunk of funds going to support Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also, the F-7383 program was recently cancelled. ;)

The tubes they use in that home stuff is actually way higher fidelity than tubes you use in an amp. You can use those higher quality tubes in an amp, but you actually lose some warmth in your sound.

This gay service pentagon survey is some fucked up biased shit

Man, imagine if the military busted out a survey for all their decisions. Oh wait, they don’t! Just this one.

“Surveying the troops is unprecedented; it did not happen in 1948 when President Truman ended segregation and it did not happen in 1976 when the service academies opened to women,” SLDN executive director Aubrey Sarvis said. “Even when the military placed women on ships at sea, the Pentagon did not turn to a survey on how to bring about that cultural change.”

This gay service pentagon survey is some fucked up biased shit

Man, imagine if the military busted out a survey for all their decisions. Oh wait, they don’t! Just this one.

The tubes they use in that home stuff is actually way higher fidelity than tubes you use in an amp. You can use those higher quality tubes in an amp, but you actually lose some warmth in your sound.

Why is that? I am tube-ignorant. All my stuff has been solid state.

This one is special, but the Army does run an extensive survey of soldier attitudes every other year. They had to stop most other in-house surveys by staff elements to keep the military sociologists under control.

Do they do it for laser-specific clearly-politically-motivated reasons about changes in one specific policy though? That’s what gets me. There’s all kinds of creepy in those questions.

It’s all very simple to those of us who play Realtime Strategy games. Clearly, you have to dedicate almost all resources to economy. Even when you’re in battles.

What? No! You peacefully develop your technological tree until you reach fundamentalism, then switch to 0% science, 80% taxes, 20% luxury rate, then nuke everybody and invade the remnants of other civilizations with good defensive units.

Yeah, you said “realtime”. I’m ignoring that, since war is much more more similar to turn-based games.

re: #158 Radicchio ad Absurdum

Generally, tubes used in home equipment are built to more exacting standards. You don’t have to look past the prices to see the difference. They’re interchangeable as far as their sockets go, but the sound is very different. I made the mistake of buying the most expensive tubes once. When I put them in they sounded like crap. I called up the guy at tube depot and he explained the error of my ways.

Oops. My point was that you can only push analogies with video games so far, but I totally forgot that. Anyway, Civ 2 still rules.

It’s an omnibus survey int which interested organizations add questions. There have been other smaller surveys like this head-popper:

Yeah, it does a bit, yeah. PT goes all over the map, this is one of my favorite songs by them, totally has a vintage Floyd feel to it:

Because two Republicans disagree on something, that means that the entire party is falling apart? Idiot.
