News anchors should just report.

Stories like this and Maddow last night give me hope that, unlike when this all first started going down, that Faux and Breitbart will be made to face what they have done to this woman and answer for it. Andy's already chosen to slink away after the initial ass-kicking, but he can only hide for so long. As for Fox, I'm with Fozzie from downstairs, it's time to seriously consider revoking or at least temporarily suspending their press passes. If this is the sort of behavior we're to expect from them in the future, then they should have to watch from the outside with the rest of the gossip rags.

I'm not calling for Fox to be shut down or silenced by government order, I'm calling on them to be put on notice that if they're going to continue to editorialize rather than report the news and promote whatever rumors and theories they agree with, then the White House needs to lock them out of press briefings and treat them with the sort of disdain and disgust that they seem to be showing to the Administration.

I'm reading Kristin Gore's second book right now--there's a fun scene where the president's father has just died, and the main character is confronting the press with her boss, the vice president. One of the reporters asks an offensive, nasty question, and the camel the vice president is leading spits at her. (They're on a tour of India at the time.)

82 | wrenchwench Thu, Jul 22, 2010 3:59:43pm |
Cooper refers to Sherrod's speech as being about her "change of heart". I think it can be argued that she was not a racist even at the time of the 1980s incident she spoke of. She talked about her experiences with racism, but not her own racism. She started with the lynchings of her relatives, which one would think give her a reason to be anti-white. When she gets to the white farmer who came to her for help, her attitude was a reaction to his. I can imagine the farmer was not happy about having to seek assistance from a black woman, which may be why he was taking an attitude with her. She didn't give him the "full force" of help she could, because he was being rude to her. Maybe that was wrong, but that's not racist, that's self-preservation in a bureaucratic job.
He needed a lawyer, and she sent him to "one of his own", thinking that meant he would get the help he needed. When she found out the white lawyer screwed the white farmer, that was her eye-opener. She had spoken earlier about black people helping each other out, and she was surprised to find it wasn't that way with white people.
Of course, I don't know her, I'm just going from what's on the video tape. But at least I'm going from the whole video tape.

If I believed that that would register with Fox, I'd be all for it. But it didn't then, so why would it now? They're going to cry foul to whatever treatment the White House gives them over this, and continuing to act as though they had no part in Ms. Sherrod's forced resignation is like ignoring that the guy who supplied the arsonist with gasoline.
If not pulling their press passes, then at least call them out on it. Don't just maintain the silent treatment, make it clear that the Administration does not approve of Fox's part in this entire fiasco and will not acknowledge its presence in press briefings until it does something to fix the very obvious problems it has with regards to publishing stories without authentication.

Or maybe they could take the strategy of answering all of Fox News' questions with the same answer, "Bill Ayers, Reverend Wright, Allahu akbar - it's what you're going to print anyway."

re: #82 wrenchwench
She ended up, I believe, giving him the full force of help that she could.
The speech was about her own process of reflection, thought and growth, a process probably many of us have (or should have) undergone on any number of issues over of the course of our lives. She chose to speak about this particular process.

IIRC, there were some "doctored" gaza flotilla videos, but I have no clue which "side" produced those. I'm thinking the folks on that flotilla weren't really conservative.
Then there was a video not long ago, put out at a site, had been doctored to show US soldiers in the worst possible light. The whole video showed a completely different story playing out.

Truly, I'm not sure. For most things, I think there are examples from both right and left, although often circumstances make them different enough that their equivalence is arguable.
I cannot think of a close parallel for this Sherrod business coming from the left. For one thing, the far nutty left has relatively little access to big media, and Breitbart, for reasons that surpass my understanding, has.

Yes, I saw it, it's kind of cool -- but I also see some comments in there that are related to what I just wrote.
Somebody said I should "come clean about the Dan Rather thing" (paraphrasing), which sounds like he thinks I was part of a conspiracy or something -- which is an argument I'm so freaking sick of, there are no words. That's a level of denial equivalent to the righties who are defending Breitbart.

Yep...there are some people who will never give you the benefit of the doubt. But I'm guessing you've learned to accept that by now. By the way, I still think you should try a Front-page exchange with Marcos going into the fall election cycle(there are some here, obviously, who still hate him for his comments on the four mercs slaughtered in Fallujah).

No, it's not an exact equivalent, and even there was an exact equivalent, it doesn't make what Breitbart did any better. I think Cooper was just preempting the criticism he knows is coming by throwing that bone out there.
Probably. And when I say I don't think there is a left-wing equivalent to this, I don't mean the left has a clean record in not fucking around with the press and lying to people (so Trade, you can stop coming up with stories that hurt your feelings).
I mean that trying to make this a left-right thing ignores the oddball nature of this, and some other Breitbart-connected recent events. They're distinguished not only by their nastiness and deceptiveness, but by their access. I wonder who pulls Breitbart's strings, or if he does this for fun, and because he's learned he can.

There's a Kristin Lattany novel where one of the characters recalls her grandmother, who was a midwife in the deep South. She describes how her grandmother had a book of handwritten genealogical records--the real ones, not the official ones--for their whole community--written in code, her granddaughter remembers, in the parts where there were damaging secrets about white people.

I was out of the country that summer and not yet following political blogs really. Wasn't til post 2004 that I was really getting into the netroots. From 2005 on I was definitely here though reading posts, not comments. Also iirc CJ was covering Kitzmiller v Dover, which I was at the time more heavily into-- the increasing spread of the intelligent design bullshit. Might have already run across LGF from that route as well.
The other thing about rather which has been mentioned here in the past is that no one has ever looked at how they got the documents in the first place or why they've never come clean about it. People other than rather were obv involved somewhere along the way.
For me that's the really interesting (and ongoing) part-- the metanarrative about the media.

It is a little one-sided, though, the coverage of Stupid Stuff Candidates Say. To get more than a mention, Teh Gaffe generally has to have been uttered by a republican woman. Then it's prime blog fodder for days.

For me that's the really interesting (and ongoing) part-- the metanarrative about the media.
the dumbass couldn't get a trial, his gig was so flimsy...that's where the fun part would have taken place, and some of your very reasonable questions answered...maybe he'll try again and they will give him one someday...when he's too old to go to jail

What's a meta-narrative?
Well, the way I'm using it, it's like this: the layers above a specific narrative that combine and incorporate the specific ones.
Like this: todays narrative in some wingnutty quarters is that evil liberals somehow forced Breitbart et al to make fools of themselves. The meta narrative is that "when we act like jerks and get everything wrong, we're still always right!" and that appears in other manifestations too, like the specific narrative on the left that Rathergate was all a dirty trick to make them look bad.
In the case of the media, the other metanarrative might be, the way the drive to dominate the 24/7 cycle makes people go with bad stupid and sensational shit.
Sometimes it's useful to look at these general and meta attributes as a way of understanding, and predicting, how a new individual story will develop.
(Sorry if this is all over the place, im on the phone with my phone company fighting over international calling plans, etc.) PS HI!

109.36 yards equal 100 meters..
Numbers don't lie my friend (unless you are a Gov't worker)
109.36 yards in 100 meters
100 cm/m
100cm x 100m = 10000cm
2.54 cm/ inch
10000cm/2.54= 3937 inches
36 inches / yard
3937 / 36 = 109.36

But, I'll bet you that, if the Republicans take the House, none of that will come to pass -- because what she proposed is not just harmful -- it's also extremely unpopular.

not far from a world record!
10 flat for a hundred YARDS would be a full second or slightly more behind a world-class sprinter. It doesn't sound like much but it would mean being 30-35 feet behind at the finish, an enormous amount if you're watching the race unfold. It's a very short race.

you asked for examples, those are three without research. Can I find an accusation of racism that did not stick made by the left wing media with research? sure I can, but not worth the time.
The telling bit is that most (not all) on the left forget completely that when they are out of power this stuff goes on all the time. I know, it's worse now, but only because it is now, not because it never happened before.
This is not to argue for relativity, this is only in answer to the statement that the left doesn't smear like this. Yes, they do, and BOTH SIDES ARE WRONG.

I sat on many benches...The only way anybody would take me after JUCO was speed and passing...Which is kind of my game.. Pass to the wing or the inside Forward or Center...
I raised 3 sons and 2 girls.. All of them are good athletes..except for Nikki..She only knows shopping Malls..
When the boys were little we would play ball and I was so tough on them
Sent them crying to mama when they tried to drive the lane...
What the hell are you doing?
He tried to drive on me!
Stop it daddy!
Don't drive the lane!
HeHeHe! which is a lot of fun when not one of them can out shoot me cause they play videogames and I shot a thousand shots a day..
That worked out just fine until my boys grew up...
Once my oldest boy got about 6'4 250lbs of pure muscle and wanted to play the old man Ball I knew I was in trouble...He wanted to drive and remind me how much I laughed at him..Gosh..That is Love between father and son..Just playing..
And how many pictures of Jordan Have I posted here? A bad ass Marine.. You try playing that kid on the court..There is no mercy..I giggle thinking about the times I sent him crying into the house to mom and me running behind him.. I'm sorry (laughing)
I sent Sharm a Pict a year or so ago of Jordan barechested in boxing gloves with a bloody nose in the garage...Do you really want to play ball against him? Terrorist don't scare Marines..And neither does pops on the court.. I take my shots..I love my kids

re: #178 Killgore Trout
One of the comments sums up the typical play-by-play of a Beck show:
He usually saves that for toward the end, after he's first spent most of the show urging people to get really, really angry, get their guns, buy gold, and head for the streets or Washington or the hills. Then he gets all weepy and talks a little about Gandhi and Martin Luther King, and how he'd like everybody to pray for him because of all the dangerous people he is facing so courageously, standing out on the point by himself, risking it all.
Officially and for the record, I can't stand Glenn Beck. He's a rancid human being. It's one thing to be nuts, it's another thing to fan the flames of hate and discontent, day after day, based on half or no truths.
I don't know anyone who watches him that isn't shit fucking nuts; he feeds their inner crazy. Glenn Beck is chumwater for their souls.

This whole episode looks really bad for the administration. When it was first reported, USDA called Ms Sherrod to pulled over her car and blackberry her resignation immediately because she will be on Glenn Beck that evening. Both the USDA and the White House was so quick in throwing her under the bus. They didn't even bother to investigate or ask her side of the story. In the end, both the USDA and the White House apologized and regretted their actions. I believe she will not accept the new position at the USDA because this will be a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the government for not giving her due process according to the law.

Near the top of this thread the idea is floated, or rather repeated, that I had said that the WH should revoke the press pass of Fox to the WH briefiing room. Some people misunderstood, conflating a press pass with an FCC license.
I wasn't talking about shutting Fox down. I was talking about not giving them a national platform. Cut them out of the process. Kick Fox from the WH press corps.
People responded that this smacks of censorship. Bullshit. Stormfront doesn't get a seat in the press corps, and neither should any other inherently racist tabloid. Fox could easily report on what questions other people are asking, and make shit up as they have been since their inception. They are going to anyway.
Fox is not a news organization. It is the propaganda arm of the right wing, and it needs to be treated as such.

It's no difference with MSNBC (Rachel Maddow, Keith Olbermann). You've got the Washington Post and the Washington Times, one liberal and the other conservative. You've got Rupert Murdoch and George Soros trying to influence the media with their wealth. Freedom of speech is what is all about in America.
