Amazing Spider-Man #62, July 1968: The Name of the Dame is … Medusa!

Arts • Views: 15,744

Here’s another amazingly well-preserved comic book from the Lizard Collection: Spider-Man #62, published in July 1968. Our copy is in near mint condition, with unfaded inks and white pages, and a beautiful cover by the great John Romita Sr.

(I guess Aunt May never told Spidey he shouldn’t get a redhead mad at him.)

Tonight on thread jack theater we present yet another episode of "what the f*** has James Firecat been reading lately?"

I would like to suggest all of you consider looking into a web comic named "Ow My Sanity"

Why do I suggest this? Because where else are you going to find a "magical girlfriend" romantic comedy set in a Lovecraftian universe?

Its a very amusing series that you can probably read all of what has so far been put up on the web in about an hour or so.

I think it does a great job bringing to the forefront the nature of why Cthulhu and his ilk were frightening in the first place as well, not because they were actively malicious, but simply because they completely and utterly failed to understand (or even bothered to try and understand) what humanity /human life is all about, assuming we ourselves know the answer to that question.

Give it a look after all there are worse things you could be reading in your spare time, like my offbroadway production of The Sultan in Saffron, its gotten rave reviews so far, in the sense that every single critic who has watched it can indisputably be described as "raving" by the end of the third act.

And in medieval romances, even the peasants have teeth.

Early Wonder Woman comics were all pretty much PG-rated bondage porn:

Wonder Woman's world is one that practically begs for analysis: coming from a utopian island inhabited only by women, she wears heavy manacles on her wrists and carries a rope everywhere she goes; she spent many of her early stories in bondage or restraining others, and even disciplined villains on Transformation Island, an Amazonian rehabilitation center that trained its all-female prison population to submit to "loving authority."

I live in NYC: Nature ? ewww

I don't have quite that reaction to nature.
Except when I'm using scissors to trim overgrown grass from the stepping-stones, and cut some critter in half. Which I did today. Which I'm still not over.

Unfortunately, To Wong Foo was a rip off of Priscella. Wong Foo was made (in my view) to bring the gay lifestyle to a wider audience in a way they would accept it. It turned out kind of silly and not all that serious.

If you like Wong Foo, go get Priscella. It's an art movie, a comedy and a heartfelt drama.

Down on the boulevard the night's enough
And time passes slow
Between the store front shadows and the street lights glow
Everybody walks right by like they're safe or something
They don't know--

Nobody shows you what they're thinking

Be gentle and peaceful each day,
Be warm and human and grateful,
And have a good thing to say.

Be thoughtful and trustful and childlike,
Be witty and happy and wise,
Be honest and love all your neighbors,
Be obsequious, purple, and clairvoyant.

Be pompous, obese, and eat cactus,
Be dull, and boring, and omnipresent,
Criticize things you don't know about,
Be oblong and have your knees removed.

Be tasteless, rude, and offensive,
Live in a swamp and be three dimensional,
Put a live chicken in your underwear,
Get all excited and go to a yawning festival.

Never confuse numismatic portraits with portraits.

Besides, you can't see her bust in that bust.

From what I've read, she fell into the category of not actually beautiful, but very attractive in how she comes across. There are a number of modern actresses that fall into that category.

During that time, socially, only women could break up with men. Men were considered bound by any marriage proposal they made.

Edmund was stuck like this, and the break-up letter he received was apparently very poorly written.

Was it an honor thing, for the men? Was that why they couldn't dissolve the marriage proposal?

On the sidebar of the craigslist story:

Iran orders 99 lashes for woman facing execution, rights group says
[Link: www.cnn.com...]

(CNN) -- An Iranian woman who'd already been condemned to death faces another sentence of 99 lashes because of a case of mistaken identity in a photograph, according to foes of the execution.

Iranian authorities imposed the sentence after they saw the photo of a woman without a head scarf in a newspaper, the International Committee Against Stoning, a human rights group, said Friday.
.....
Iranian law requies all women, regardless of their faith, to wear garments that cover their hair and bodies.

According to the Times, one of Ashtiani's former lawyers, Mohammed Mostafaei, gave the paper the photo.
.....
The Times said Mostafei told it that Ashtiani's son, Sajjad, 22, had e-mailed him two photographs three months ago and told him both were of his mother.

Ratted out by her son and her attorney. It's not bad enough she's going to die for "adultery" but they have to beat her first.

Hamas calls women and children 'military targets'

The Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas on Saturday said that all Jews living in Judea and Samaria (the so-called "West Bank") are legitimate military targets, regardless of whether they are men, women or children.

Hamas spokesman Azat al-Ghashek told the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat that it is "natural" to want to harm any Jew that is found in these areas, as they are "the reserve force of the occupation army on Palestinian land."

Al-Ghashek was interviewed following last week's brutal execution of four Jewish civilians near the Judean town of Hebron that left seven Israeli children without parents. Hamas claimed credit for that attack and organized street rallies in Gaza City to celebrate the slayings.

Palestinian terror groups have long argued that even killing Israeli women and children constitutes legitimate military activity since all Israeli Jews eventually serve in the army.

Peace!

Gov. Barbour Breaks with GOP on Immigration
[Link: www.cato-at-liberty.org...]

Let me just tell you, I’ve had a different experience than perhaps some other governors. I don’t know where we would have been in Mississippi after Katrina if it hadn’t been for the Spanish speakers that came in to help rebuild, and there’s no doubt in my mind some of them weren’t here legally. Some of them were, some of them weren’t. But they came in, they looked for the work—if they hadn’t been there, if they hadn’t come and stayed for a few months or a couple of years, we would be way, way, way behind where we are now.
.....
So there’s gotta be a way—a) we gotta secure the border, but b) we’ve got to work through how are we gonna make sure we’ve got the labor we need in the United States. H1B visas—a huge, huge thing. My idea is everybody from Stanford who’s from India that gets a PhD, we oughta stamp citizenship on his diploma, so instead of him going back to India and starting a business that employs 1,800 people, that he’ll start a business that employs 1,800 people in Des Moines, Iowa, instead of India. A lot of this is just common sense, and common sense tells us we’re not gonna take ten or twelve or fourteen million people [currently here illegally] and put them in jail and deport them. We’re not gonna do it, and we need to quit—some people need to quit acting like we are, and let’s talk about real solutions.

Windsock McCain gets a little smack-down after making his 24th appearance on the Sunday talk shows since President Obama's inauguration:

[Link: www.washingtonmonthly.com...]

And just think what our discourse would be missing if we didn't have these brilliant insights on the airwaves. "Class warfare"? How clever and fresh. The Bush tax cuts that McCain voted against now need to be extended? How compelling.

For those keeping score -- and you know I am -- this was McCain's 24th appearance on a Sunday morning talk show since President Obama's inauguration. That's an average of more than an appearance a month, every month -- more than any other public official in the country.

...

McCain lost a presidential election; he's not in the GOP leadership; he's not especially influential with anyone; he's not playing an active role in shaping any legislation; his re-election appears secure; and he doesn't appear to have any expertise in any area of public policy. The Sunday shows seem to book him out of habit. It remains farcical.

There's a bit more...

Work accident reported in Lebanon...

Hezbollah weapons depot blows up

Taped footage showed Hezbollah operatives removing arms from a house in southern Lebanon following a blast that rocked the building.

An Israeli surveillance drone took pictures of the site minutes after a blast rocked the building, Israel's Channel One network reported Saturday.

The house was used by Hezbollah to store arms in an area under the control of the U.N.peacekeeping force, Lebanese officials said. The explosion occurred on Friday afternoon.

The blast tore through a three-story building in Shehabiyeh south of the Litani River, the Lebanese newspaper The Daily Star said Saturday. It was not clear if there were any casualties.

Israeli security officials said the building where the blast occurred is owned by a Hezbollah operative and is a known weapons storage facility used by Hezbollah in violation of U.N. Security Resolution 1701

Besides which, I think (based on what I've heard of that story so far) the charges are BS - to the point of being police/prosecutor misconduct. That clinic was bombed before in the late '90s, so for the director to panic and assume the "suspicious box" was a bomb is perfectly reasonable. And she's being accused of planting it herself and staging the whole thing? o_O Yet another black mark for The Handmaid's Tale-style theocracy-wannabes in Oklahoma politics.

Very clumsy and very stupid of them. A case like this is just begging to be thrown out of court.

And worst thing about it is the precedent being sent. You shouldn't report suspicious looking boxes? They'll put her in jail for that? What is this world coming to?

re: #379 Charles

The Oklahoma state government is heavily dominated by religious right fanatics. I agree -- this story looks like prosecutorial misconduct, by people with a very obvious agenda.

Better if it's out in the open where people can keep an eye on it, though.

That looks like an unconfirmed report.

After 9/11, there was a box found near our office building and they evacuated some 40 odd floors. That's what you're supposed to do. To be brought in on charges for such a thing is beyond my comprehension.

Larison has a good article on another conservative that left the flock.

Money Quote:

As I have said before, I don’t think the GOP will win the House, but if that did happen it would primarily be bad news for the Republican Party and the conservative movement. If that seems a little too counterintuitive for you, let me explain. Should the GOP somehow win the House, they will not have earned it and they will not deserve it, and they will proceed to destroy themselves in very short order. Arguably, there was nothing worse for the American right than to be given the free gift of winning the 2002 midterms, because this win encouraged them to pursue the policies that proved to be their undoing, and a similar win in 2010 would have the same effect of enabling Republicans’ most destructively self-indulgent impulses. As one horrified by the prospect of Republicans in power, Erik should look forward to this.

After all, even if the Republicans won the House there would not be much that they could do once in office, except waste their time as they did in the ’90s hauling executive branch officials before committees to testify on this or that outrage of the week. They would likely be stymied by the Democratic majority in the Senate on any major legislation, and Obama would veto just about anything they passed if it somehow got to his desk. At the same time, Obama would make them into a much more effective foil for his arguments once they had some hold on power, and out of frustration they would become increasingly obsessed with “getting” Obama and become even less interested in representing the interests of their constituents.

Not so far...but that's okay.. I got my wife on last night and she's getting into it, so if nothing else I'll have at least one other person to play with. DDO tends to lend itself to grouping since it's more quest based than grinding based, so you tend to make friends faster and find people you like to run with more easily. Just run Windows in a virtual machine. If your iMac uses Intel, virtual support is built into the chip, and I think VirtualBox will run on Mac, although I should really check.

With the advent of the tea party types taking over, that has changed greatly.
If the rep.continue down this road, they are going to marginalize themselves to a regional party.(i realize that they will probably gain seats in the midterm, and they will take precisely the wrong message from it,much like they did in the last presidential election)

BTW, Bootcamp comes with Snow Leopard and you can pick up a copy of XP with Service Pack 1 on Ebay for about the price of VMWare or Parallels. (Don't order from anyone who sounds like their selling from China, though. I've gotten burned with counterfeits several times that way. Look for people who will guarantee that the software will load)

Otherwise it works great. DDO runs in the lowest graphic quality but the way the graphics are drawn the low graphic quaility isn't that much of a downgrade from the highest. If you're interested in more info, email me at my blog page (not terribly active but has my address on it)

There isn't a single female character in today's Hollywood films that is "plain". Even the "nerdy" grrrls are cuter than most people you see on the street.

And in medieval romances, even the peasants have teeth.

Yeah, right.

Bad teeth are an artifact of today's wealth of sugar. A news story recently about a mass grave discovered somewhere around PA or OH or so argued that it must have been Irish railroad workers who had been reported at the time to have died of cholera. But forensic examination showed they'd been shot.

Anyhow, one point of the evidence that it was indeed Irish was that they had all their teeth. Having your teeth was proof of poverty, because it meant you couldn't afford sugar, and thus couldn't get cavities.

Thriving Dayton Mosques welcome visitors of all faiths.

I think it should be a possibility in our well rounded minds to consider taking the time and visiting a local mosque.

The Islamic Center of Cincinnati, mentioned in the DDN article, is about five miles from the "Touchdown Jesus" that was hit by lightning and burned to the ground a little while back. Perhaps the center was what God was trying to hit? Such a target-rich environment--Jesus, the Islamic Center, Hustler Hollywood, and John Boehner's house.

This weekend, I passed by the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, which like that of Cincinnati is right by I-75. What a beautiful building!

Prayer works.

Work works better. "Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition" or "Pray for rain, but keep on hoeing."

Some fellas look at the eyes
Some fellas look at the nose
Some fellas look at the size
Some fellas look at the clothes
I don't care if her eyes are red
I don't care if her nose is long
I don't care if she's underfed
I don't care if her clothes are worn
First I look at the purse!

Upding for the J. Geils reference. Best damned party band I've ever seen.re: #233 Slumbering Behemoth

What modern perversity is this? Clearly under-age girls singing of "lovers". Disgusting. This sort of immoral, provocative garbage would not have been acceptable in my grandparents time, I tell you what!
/wait, what?

When I was very young and my father's mother would come to visit us, we were always forced to watch The Lawrence Welk Show with her. The woman was not universally loved in our house.
