He’s already been to visit the victims and the families of the deceased, and spent some time at Giffords’ bedside with her husband. Quiet and personal before doing the public stuff. That’s a good message right there.

Nope, not going to happen. Not when a defenseless 9 yo was killed.

Nobody was actually suggesting that a child should have to defend themselves.

Personally, I wonder if maybe that clip had been normal sized and not oversized this sick asshole would have run out of ammo before he turned the gun on that poor child. We just don’t know. But the NRA is sure as shit going to defend his right to have all those extra bullets just in case he needs ‘em. That was the point of the comment.

I think whenever there is a bad guy, we want a good guy. I’d like to think that I could make myself useful in a situation like this, but I have no idea of knowing and don’t even want to find out. Plus, a lot of people are saying what he did may have saved her life. He kept her from chocking on her own blood and kept pressure on the wound.

It’s an interesting subject for me. I was once, in a very different situation, in a similar position where I helped someone who was in incredible danger. They viewed me as the person who saved them, something which I doubted given the nature of their injury and the treatment I could muster, but it really messed with my head over the years trying to deal with the emotions of having that role projected on you.

I actually think bravery is a gift, like singing or being good at math. It makes sense that people who are brave feel embarrassed by all of the attention they might get because to them it was a natural response. When it comes to the “flight or fight” response, we admire the fighters. Whatever the situation was, you probably could have run away or looked for someone else to help, but you didn’t. Of course this is nothing compared to the Coretta Scott Kind funeral. You guys should be really glad this isn’t a mostly black crowd. LOL!

I’ve been to wakes with laughter and applause but they were a reaction to the atmosphere and speeches. The Applause, hoot and whistles aren’t really appropriate to the tone of the speeches.

351 What, me worry?  Wed, Jan 12, 2011 6:12:34pm

re: #315 Bubblehead II

I found myself actually laughing with friends after my father’s memorial service which I thought, myself was inappropriate, but I was happy to have closure.

I know the feeling. When my MIL got the message that her husband had passed away it was hilarious. They didn’t know how to use a cell phone or voice mail. Sad/funny at the same time

It’s a weird thing. You need closure. Burials and memorial services give that to the community and the family. There’s almost a happy release. This whole town has been suffering here. You walk through your life like a zombie, feeling disconnected. You want the comfort of other people and my goodness, the president! So I think it’s almost a natural response.

What an enormous contrast with Sarah Palin’s statement.

You really can’t compare the two. Palin is defensive and acting out of self interest. President Obama is trying to bridge a divide and get people to think beyond their own bubbles.

Because Sarah has to play the victim and constantly air her grievance at the MSM, who treated her so badly by asking questions and actually expecting answers.

She’s a joke…she claims her words don’t create a climate of implied violence, but other people’s criticisms have now put her in danger.

My eldest brother lives there, in Tucson, less than ten miles away from there, where it all went down and I spoke to him on Saturday as this was being reported. RWC and I have spent a lot of time there in past years and it’s got to be one of the cleanest, neatest and nicest places I’ve ever been to. I know that the whole community is in still in shock, and will be for a long time to come. Our hearts go out to the people of Tucson and the whole state of Arizona, the families of the lost loved ones and to Congresswoman Gifford. I plan to go and visit the spot soon and lay some flowers in memory of the fallen.

There are a lot of great moments in the speech. Here is a very salient one:

If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let’s make sure it’s worthy of those we have lost. Let’s make sure it’s not on the usual plane of politics and point scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle.
