He’s already been to visit the victims and the families of the deceased, and spent some time at Giffords’ bedside with her husband. Quiet and personal before doing the public stuff. That’s a good message right there.

I think whenever there is a bad guy, we want a good guy. I’d like to think that I could make myself useful in a situation like this, but I have no idea of knowing and don’t even want to find out. Plus, a lot of people are saying what he did may have saved her life. He kept her from chocking on her own blood and kept pressure on the wound.
It’s an interesting subject for me. I was once, in a very different situation, in a similar position where I helped someone who was in incredible danger. They viewed me as the person who saved them, something which I doubted given the nature of their injury and the treatment I could muster, but it really messed with my head over the years trying to deal with the emotions of having that role projected on you.

I actually think bravery is a gift, like singing or being good at math. It makes sense that people who are brave feel embarrassed by all of the attention they might get because to them it was a natural response. When it comes to the “flight or fight” response, we admire the fighters. Whatever the situation was, you probably could have run away or looked for someone else to help, but you didn’t. And it’s a more rare response than you may know.

I don’t think any soldier at Ft. Hood had planned to make war in a cafeteria… on base… in the United States.
They didn’t plan on doing it, but they still signed up to give their lives.
Their deaths were a senseless waste but because they were soldiers it probably doesn’t tug at our heart strings quite as much as when innocent civilians are killed.
I’m not saying if that’s right or wrong, I’m just saying it is how it is… for me at least….

It’s a weird thing. You need closure. Burials and memorial services give that to the community and the family. There’s almost a happy release. This whole town has been suffering here. You walk through your life like a zombie, feeling disconnected. You want the comfort of other people and my goodness, the president! So I think it’s almost a natural response.

My eldest brother lives there, in Tucson, less than ten miles away from there, where it all went down and I spoke to him on Saturday as this was being reported. RWC and I have spent a lot of time there in past years and it’s got to be one of the cleanest, neatest and nicest places I’ve ever been to. I know that the whole community is in still in shock, and will be for a long time to come. Our hearts go out to the people of Tucson and the whole state of Arizona, the families of the lost loved ones and to Congresswoman Gifford. I plan to go and visit the spot soon and lay some flowers in memory of the fallen.

There’s no floor. The depravity can always get lower.
The depravity will descend to the point where it stops making money. Then it will stay there :D

Just for the record, sometimes the places that look ‘Clean” and “Nice” and “neat”? sometimes that’s a symptom of a problem.
Portland is chaotic and grungy and dirty and sorta poor. But it’s also giving and creative, much like hippies. And nobody in Portland is going to start drawing on congressmen in a parking lot

There are a lot of great moments in the speech. Here is a very salient one:
If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let’s make sure it’s worthy of those we have lost. Let’s make sure it’s not on the usual plane of politics and point scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle.

And God Bless you President Obama. That seals my 2012 vote rock freaking soilid.
It does not get my vote, but it was still a good speech and it did him credit.

And this time, ya got it wrong. “Sometimes” anything is possible. Tucson is a good city. Been there for a week or two every year for twenty five years.

well, we didn’t…
Late to the party, but the memorial at Fort Hood was chosen by the military I would assume. Here the state of AZ made the choice to go big. Two different incidents, two different memorials.
Both were a big “fuck you” to the haters.

Father Coughlin was a priest. He actually would have been respectful regarding a funeral service, as the clergy are trained to be. Matt Drudge with this has actually descended beneath Coughlin and continues to dig.

This follows a number of things that have impressed me of late. But yeah, great speech, and very sincere.

You know, as a rule I don’t like to down ding comments I don’t like just because I believe everyone has a right to their own opinion. But if I were to do it, That little snipe would be a prime candidate for one. I’m thinking about it. If I do, it will probably be the first one since I started posting here. You’ve never been there, I have. You’ve never shopped in that store where the shooting occured and talked to the people there. I have. The b.s. I have to put up with here in Los Angeles is so annoying and stressful that the atmosphere in Tucson is a very welcome breath of fresh air! When you’ver been there and seen what I then you have the right to your snippy little comment. Until then pretty please refrain!

As did Palin, who decided to make this day about herself with a self-absorbed, self-pitying little speech earlier. She’s still playing the victim over the 2008 electioin and the MSM in general. So why should today be different than any other?
As a Dem, I wish the GOP was dumb enough to nominate her. But I don’t think they are.
