Palin’s Next Public Appearance: A Gun Convention
Sarah Palin’s first public appearance in person following the Arizona shootings will be at a huge gun convention in Reno, Nevada.
No one will ever accuse Palin of having perfect pitch.

Because really, it’s the height of Presidential gravitas and seriousness to go to speak at a gun show while a member of Congress is in the hospital after being shot in the head.
I understand that this was likely booked in advance of the shooting, but still. Would it kill this woman to show even the slightest bit of empathy or class?

You know, politicians and others often cancel appearances at events after a major tragedy, out of respect for the victims. But then, nobody ever credited Palin with an abundance of respect for anyone or anything.

Agree, but she could care less about us.
2012 is going to be interesting. If she wants the GOP nomination, I think she probably gets it. In a crowded early field, she’ll have her stalwart 40% or so of the primary voters that will go with her no matter what, and the 4 - 6 others will fragment the rest. When the others start to drop out and the field narrows, she’ll be able to focus on the one or two serious competitors and go negative on them (especially if they are moderates).
I think she’s a non-starter in the general, but I think she gets there.

She booked this AFTER the shooting? Wow. That’s just pathetic, and completely tone deaf.
I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt since most of these things are booked in advance. Booking a gun show after this tragedy is just wrong.

Her ego is so limitless that I can imagine her mounting an independent run, if she falters in the early primaries.
She certainly seems tone-deaf to the sane among us, but she has perfect pitch for a certain constituency. Don’t know if it’s been referenced here, but this take is very interesting:

I agree.
We have to remember the audience she is playing to: one that devoutly believes that the 2nd amendment confers an unlimited right to own and carry weapons, one that believes that such right ought to be vigorously exercised at all times, and one that believes there was zero connection between violent political rhetoric and the Tuscon tragedy. To dial back on these sorts of appearances would be completely inconsistent with the positions she has taken and the persona she has so carefully crafted. She’s “all in”, and there’s no turning back for her.
Many of us think she is a lightweight, and many of us have really fundamental disagreements with her positions. But you underestimate this woman at your peril.
34 | elizajane Fri, Jan 14, 2011 10:51:26am |
A commentator on Frum who attends this convention yearly points out that this is the SAFARI CLUB, not gun-toting rednecks. The Safari Club is, apparently, a bunch of wildly wealthy Republicans. They are not buying Glocks, they are buying expensive “wildlife art” and $200,000 elephant guns (I kid you not) while brandishing their conservation credentials. They hunt with guides in Africa, not with shotguns in Appalachia.
Possibly, of course, she is planning to have them all join hands and sing “Kumbaya,” before they donate their money to African orphanages.

She’s pulled some bone-headed moves, but this takes the cake. Her husband divorced her earlier this year. She’s got 4 kids, one just graduated, one in elementary school and two in junior high. Three of the kids have problems. They are Mormon, this dude is Muslim. My sister has apparently converted…not sure how that’s going to work with the kids being Mormon. Oh, and he’s 11 years younger than she is. I let her have it, pulling no punches, but it didn’t do any good.
The only consolation is that it’ll likely be a long time before they can get him a visa to come over here. Maybe she’ll wise up in the meantime…that is, if nothing has happened to her while she’s over there.

If there’s a choice between a bad decision and a good decision, she’ll pick the bad decision every single time. At this point, I really don’t give a crap what she personally does, but I do care about my niece and nephews who already have had their lives disrupted this year and have their own problems to deal with without this added to the mix. She should wait until they are grown and on their own before she does stupid things like this.

Sarah Palin is in love with a soundbite: Barack Obama’s comment about people who cling to guns and religion. Actually, I think Obama listed quite a few more things in that sentence that people cling to, but Palin pulled out guns and religion. She loves that soundbite; it’s so mean! Guns are pretty much part of the “Palin brand”. But let’s not say she’s shallow; she can also do a great “you betcha”.
