Michael Steele: ‘Nothing Wrong with a Government Shutdown’

Looks like the GOP is really going to do it
Politics • Views: 32,121

When even relatively moderate Republicans like Michael Steele are talking like this, it seems clear that the GOP really is planning to throw a giant tantrum and shut down the government.

With Washington consumed by a fight over spending, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee said today that his party shouldn’t be afraid of a government shutdown, arguing that such a stand-off would send a powerful signal to the public about the GOP’s commitment to cutting the budget.

“I personally think there’s nothing wrong with a government shutdown,” Michael Steele told us on ABC’s “Top Line” today.

“I’ve been an advocate for it over six, seven months now for the simple reason it is the shocker. It is the reality check that the spenders need to have, that those who are trying to chart a different course need to have, whether they are Republicans or Democrats in the Congress.”

After reading this strategy piece in the Moderate Voice, it would seem better if they did. A lot of people would be hurt, but it's better than trying to jump through a constantly-moving Overton window:

Look at the graph on that page, and look at what factors account for how much of the deficit. Responsible governance demands that we re-evaluate the wisdom of the Bush (now Obama) tax cuts. We couldn't afford it then, and we can't now.

Agree. The Dems should pick out some of the more outrageous cuts (like Planned Parenthood), highlight them and simply say that the House budget is a dead letter and they should start over.

“I’ve been an advocate for it over six, seven months now for the simple reason it is the shocker."

How much shock value is left after six or seven months of advocating for it?

Someone should really remind these idiots what happened the last time they shut the government down.

Not surprising is for a guy who's shown he all the balls of a field mouse, he's going to jump on board with shutting down the government. Of all the shit he's let fly freely, this is going to be where he shows some enthusiasm, because it's easier to go the flow of the party. Per usual, he's powerless. Easily influenced. Flaccid.

Which is also a pretty good indication of what the entire party has devolved to. The last moderate conservative with any clout was last seen riding a unicorn in search of Bigfoot.

Part of me actually wishes it would happen. When the Republicans who collect disability and welfare checks stop getting them, we'll see how well they'll think of their newly elected representatives.

Not that Steele has to worry about that. And they call us elitists.

Actually, they'll still get their checks. What won't happen is that new applications for things like Medicare of SS won't get processed. But the highly automated processes of sending out checks to already-enrolled recipients will probably proceed apace.

I wonder how many of those there are, and how many admit to it in the face of their rah-rah anti-govenment bullshit.

They'll still blame Obama. If he hadn't been a spendy liberal, the GOP wouldn't have to shut down the government.

If every member of the GOP was caught with a dead whore sexual capitalist in their trunk, they'd still deny everything and act like the pillars of virtue and light.

So it will only effect newer type things? I was actually wondering what is involved in a government shutdown, other than Congress gets extra, EXTRA, time off. Will teachers get paid? Police, fire? Or local isn't effected?

Local stuff wouldn't be affected for a long time.

Parks close right away, and a lot of various sorts of applications will lay around unattended (federal benefits, patents, copyrights, and the like). I would imagine that the various federal inspections (OSHA, MSHA, etc..) would cease. Routine data collection would go unattended (CDC, BLS, etc...). I would guess that things like Pell Grants would get screwed up.

The Armed Services would be unaffected, as would (I think) the FBI, Secret Service, and the law enforcement part of ATF (but not the permitting part).

If anyone has greater detail, please chime in.

There's a novel by Sharyn McCrumb in which an old man who sells stuff at Scottish festivals is running a scam in which he claims to be a representative of the Scottish Republican Army, a fictional terrorist group. But this is the national GOP! These people are supposed to be grown-ups! They are supposed to have some sense of responsibility. One would think that a biblical literalist and there many in the GOP would see it as our responsibility to tend to the earth that God created. At least, that's how I'd think if I were a creationist. Heck I think that way as an evolutionist too. This is the only planet we've got. Gotta make it best for future generations. Well the other thing about many of those same abortion opponents if if you start suggesting and I have that we help young, unwed mothers out I get some crap response like "Welfare!!!!!!!!!" on that." Now, there are some churches I admit that recognize this but the political pro life movement is quiet about this and seems to care more about shaming women which is why I despite my personal pro life leanings cannot stand them. Now, there are some churches I admit that recognize this but the political pro life movement is quiet about this and seems to care more about shaming women which is why I despite my personal pro life leanings cannot stand them. And then there's of course the staunch pro lifers that are some of the most pro death penalty and pipe for war people you'll ever meet.

Yeah, I cannot stand them. They're the kind of people who do not hesitate at all to harass women who get abortions and I have to say even when I was at my most pro life, I would have never even thought of doing something that cruel.

Part of me actually wishes it would happen. When the Republicans who collect disability and welfare checks stop getting them, we'll see how well they'll think of their newly elected representatives.

Not that Steele has to worry about that. And they call us elitists.

A government "shutdown" doesn't mean that those checks stop coming. That's not what happened the last time around.

I went to a training on pro-Israel advocacy some weeks ago, and the man teaching it had some interesting things to say about reaching out to people whose minds you could change, rather than fighting endless duels with unreachable counter-activists.

I understand the desire to simply batter on the people who say things that upset you, to try to shame them, make them change their minds, make them look bad. But that's not useful, it's merely emotionally satisfying.

I think that in the abortion debate, we need to keep that in mind as well. It's more important to move toward goals than to maul one another.

The desire to maul, though, is very, very strong.

Agreed. I don't dexify either but it's easier for me. I thought it was an interesting article I don't think it's really practical philosophy for social situations or relationships. It wouldn't go over well in most work environments either. There are hardwired rituals that most people have to engage in whether they like it or not. Groveling to your boss, big dramatic fights and make ups with girlfriends. It's almost required human behavior.

It would be fun. Especially if you ran it at intervals through the nomination season to see how the numbers change.

Why You Should Never Defend, Explain or Justify

He's right.

In my experience, going into a defensive crouch always puts one at a disadvantage, and some people are very skilled at getting their opponents to do exactly that. Introducing a straw man argument seems to be a favorite tactic to accomplish that.

Ditto for any explaining beyond stating facts that support your position.

Justifying? There's an old Sufi proverb that says, "Self justification is worse than the original offense." You end up sounding like a whiner that needs to be in denial to protect your glass ego. Better to just concede defeat early, walk away with your dignity in tact, and be more well prepared next time.

We're just a couple of hours away from what is being billed as the first dog-and-pony show of the 2012 election:

Gingrich, Pawlenty, Santorum: It's Presidential Campaign Season in Iowa

Who needs declared candidates? The race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination unofficially launched at a Monday evening forum featuring five men with their eyes on the White House.

On the agenda for the event, sponsored by the Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition: former House speaker Newt Gingrich, former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, former Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer and radio personality Herman Cain.

[...]

As interesting as who showed up was who didn't. Faith & Family Coalition President Steve Scheffler said Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour wanted to come but had scheduling conflicts. Also not here: former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (who won Iowa in 2008) and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney (who finished second in 2008).

[...]

Once women and teenage girls start dying again from botched back-alley abortions there will be a change.

Sad, but that is what will happen.

If you have the money, you can just go to Canada or travel to a state or city in which you can get an abortion.

There was an article, years ago, about young women from Ireland being stopped from going to England because they were afraid they were going there to get abortions. Abortions were illegal in Catholic Ireland.

A bit of weird and somewhat disturbing news:

Justice Thomas's old girlfriend has written a book, and from the sound of it, she confirms much of what Anita Hill had to say.

The girlfriend is Lillian McEwen, who has had a pretty decent career as a DC-based lawyer, and is now retired.

[Link: www.washingtonpost.com...]

I wonder what would have happened had she been called to testify way back when.

I have to say, I think people knew Anita was telling the truth.

It didn't matter.

The Naked Truth About The Chip Aisle

But the main challenge with chips - whichever ones you choose - is in stopping yourself from eating the whole bag.

"The first thing to do is try to have smaller portions," Tsang says. "We don't pay attention to what we're doing when we're eating chips and we easily overeat."

Tsang has a point. When was the last time you ate only 8 or 9 chips at a time, which equals the 1 ounce portion size clearly marked on the bag?

That situation is particularly bad because accountability for the employer side of the bargaining table is so diffused. No regular voters get to vote for the MTA board, or the RR Retirement Board, so it is difficult for taxpayers to hold anyone responsible.

I saw a new product made by RAID on the store shelf the other day.

Bedbug and Flea spray.

I shuddered in horror.

I read an interview with a local exterminator about the whole bedbug thing. He says bedbugs are the only pest that have actually made clients of his cry when he told them what they had.

He also said a few people had called him back repeatedly, because they didn't believe they didn't have bedbugs.

Just one of the problems with Public Sector Unions...
Interesting...!
[Link: www.nytimes.com...]

Don't think LIRR is public sector. The problem is the Retirement Board.

Check that, MTA runs it, but the disability is not a union issue.

I have to say, I think people knew Anita was telling the truth.

It didn't matter.

Why didn't it matter???

I'm floored.

The GOP actually seems to think it "won" the showdown with Clinton over the government shutdown and impeachment proceedings during the 90's.

Then again, they've so revised Reagan's rougher patches in hindsight, it's possible they're just doing the same again.

2.1 trillion in 2011 projected revenues
3.7 trillion in 2011 proposed spending

Never mind the political theater you are arguing about above; I think a "shut down" through federal insolvency is imminent.

...and this is just the federal deficit we are talking about. Consider how many states are upside down right now.

Then you don't understand what 'insolvency' is.

One would think that a biblical literalist and there many in the GOP would see it as our responsibility to tend to the earth that God created. At least, that's how I'd think if I were a creationist. Heck I think that way as an evolutionist too. This is the only planet we've got. Gotta make it best for future generations. The way to do that is not to whine about Al Gore and ebil environmentalists when the real issue of climate change is brought up.

One would indeed think that a biblical literalist would want to be "good stewards of the land" as part of their responsibility to God. Except for the very strong belief that we are in the "End Times." There is no need to protect the environment for our children or grandchildren, since they will have either been brought up to heaven or tortured in the fires of hell by the time they are adults. To put it short, literalists believe that there is no future, so why protect it.
