Sources close to the investigation tell NBC News that the Justice Department has given the green light for criminal charges to be filed against former U.S. Senator and presidential hopeful John Edwards, for alleged violations of campaign finance laws arising from the cover-up of an affair. One source with knowledge of the case says that while prosecutors are moving toward an indictment, it is still possible that a plea agreement could be reached.

Violent thunderstorms kill 7 in Oklahoma, Kansas
The death toll in Joplin is up to 122. By itself this far exceeds the yearly average for the last half century, yet it is a footnote to the earlier tornado outbreak that killed more than 300 in the southeast.
This is getting to be like a siege. Being here on the drought stricken fringes is like sitting on the walls of a conquered city as barbarians swarm through the streets below.
I managed to talk to a city councilman today about getting the emergency sirens restored in Lubbock. He told me he had looked into it and had been told that the cost would be in the range of $4 million. That seems very high to me but he pointed out that dozens of sirens would be required and they would have to be in vandal proof housings with fail-safe controls. Even that exorbitant figure is a fraction of what the city is spending on its new softball complex, to say nothing of the truly vast amount expended on useless and seemingly endless street projects.

I looked for the “recorded” graphic on the earlier one and didn’t see it. The current one is a day time report with Anderson Cooper.
A night scene has come up with Cooper similar to the one at 12:48 but with “recorded” clearly visible. The warning has now been canceled in any case.

A few years ago, I did see a news report that Disneyworld managers had put out a memo threatening to instantly fire any employee who was caught referring to the place as “Mouse-schwitz.” The employees promptly switched to “Duckau.”

In both cases, attempts are being made to fit a large number of people into a small space in order to make more money.
However, the similarities end there. For example, if you get sick on a flight, they won’t throw you out of the plane to your death to prevent you from infecting the other passengers.

I once kneed a woman in the head, hard, after a short flight. Totally by accident, mind you.
Poor woman was deathly afraid of flying. She white knuckled it through the whole flight; squeaking, freaking, and clutching herself at even the tiniest thing. I, being a dude who loves to fly when he can, spent the whole flight trying reassure and comfort her. I thought she was going to have a heart attack at one point.
When the plane landed and everyone was getting up to leave, that’s when I nailed her. As I was standing up, she bent down to pick something up, and my knee met her noggin. Hard enough to hurt my knee, even. Again, completely by accident. I apologized, but the poor gal was so relieved to return to terra firma I doubt she would have cared if someone had cut off her hand at that point.

Current smoker here, and I hate that shit as well. Whenever I am out, and there are no ashtrays handy, I rub it out and toss the butt in a garbage can.

The Federal Government has increased pressure on the Opposition to refuse donations from tobacco companies and to support a bill to force tobacco companies to adopt no-brand cigarette packets.
The Government says the Coalition is reluctant to support the plain packaging legislation because it is addicted to the donations.
The bill has split the Coalition with at least two members reported as threatening to cross the floor and vote with the Government.
Labor stopped accepting donations from cigarette companies in 2004, but the Coalition has been given $1.7 million since that time.
Greens leader Bob Brown will introduce a bill in the Senate designed to prevent tobacco companies donating to political parties or candidates, saying the donations influence policy.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon used Question Time to criticise the Opposition’s attitude to donations and plain packaging, describing tobacco companies as “selling death”.
She said the Cancer Council has released 24 targeted studies taken over the last 20 years which prove that “current packages dilute from the health warning”.
“It shows that packages have an impact on young people and their perception of cigarettes and those that smoke them,” she said.

Satellite survey unearths lost Egyptian pyramids
A new satellite survey of Egypt has identified 17 lost pyramids and more than 1,000 un-excavated tombs.
The team from the University of Alabama analysed images from satellites orbiting the earth that have infrared cameras which can highlight different materials under the ground.
Satellite archaeologists were able to identify ancient Egyptian houses, temples and tombs made of mud-brick, which is much denser than the surrounding soil.
More than 1,000 tombs and 3,000 ancient settlements have been revealed so far.
Preliminary excavations have already confirmed some of the findings, including the existence of two buried pyramids at Sakkara raising the possibility that it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Egypt.

You may want to stay with the smaller one, you could do a search on google with the make and model, you may find they came with multiple sizes.
Also re hdd sizes, when you format the drive space is used up with FAT (File Allocation Tables), its like a table of contents for the files on the disk.
The formated drive can only hold X amount of files. Each index holder requires about 4k of reserved space.
The larger the drive, the more files can be stored.

He wishes people and society in general was more accepting of intersexed people and those without what we’d call a coherent gender, but to intentionally inflict that on a child is kind of bizarre. It’s a fine line to tread, I agree. In terms of the specific article posted above, I would say that there are pros and cons.
Pro:
- relatives don’t immediately start plying the kids with their view of what a little boy or girl needs to be “like”
Con:
- possible confusion in the child over how to process emotions without a normalizing gender structure
I guess I’d want an actual child psychologist to evaluate the significance of the latter (or indeed to flag any other potential problems). I didn’t think the content of the article was much to worry about though.

Our cousin Eddie was growing up with what was considered an “unhealthy” interest in girly toys.
So for his 8th birthday he was given tons of GI Joes, toy guns, bazookas, greanades, etc…
I sat there drooling over the stuff, he was obviously unimpressed.
Cousin Eddie is now openly gay and working as a male nurse in Chicago.

Quite happy to let my kids play with toys of any kind as long as they keep the damaging psychological influences to a minimum (and yes, this is a subjective decision, obviously).
I was talking to a woman who said “but we all played with barbies growing up”, meaning there’s nothing wrong with them.
This was a woman who has been hospitalized multiple times due to eating disorders.
Hence, limited barbies, no bratz. You have to draw the line somewhere. As much as anything else, your kids have to realize that you draw the line somewhere, and why.

My sister-in-law is from Southeast Asia. I think Hello Kitty! and the good luck cats have already saturated the markets there and are basically universally known. I think that image and the associated mindset just did not jive with her when combined with an assault rifle.
And cultural mixes like this disrupt her great desire for orderliness and organization - everything and everyone in their place and role. So conflicts like this that amuse my brother and I due to the inherent ridiculousness of their content cause her discomfort I guess since they do not fit the expected Venn diagram of life correctly.

Your scenario is a nice one, but unfortunately the amount of abuse and rejection gay kids experience is immense. A lot of the homeless kids I worked with back in the day had been kicked out by their asshole parents.
And many parents can never deal with the fact that their kids are gay. They just can’t even face it. Sad.

My daughter prefers to dress comfortably - sweatpants, t-shirt, comfy shoes.
UNTIL she goes to some formal school event - then, the dress has to have ribbons, bows, all sorts of frilly stuff, and the shoes, oh my - the shoes! Must be girly girly = high heals, with adornment, etc. I love shopping with her for her going-out clothes.

When I was 19 (yes, 19) I got into a bar in Redding California on my fishing license (which I changed my birthdate on to say I was 21 — Redding’s kind of a fucked up backcountry kind of town…or was back then)…Doc’s Skyroom - used to be a steakhouse, and became a “meet market” for twenty somethings in the 70s and 80s (before becoming a meth haven and getting shut down in the 90s) well, instead of keeping a low profile, I became a bit of a regular. On Fridays, they’d have a wet t-shirt contest (ladies only)…to be a judge, you had to tell a joke and get the most laughs…I told that one.

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad suffered a heart attack while visiting the United States and was hospitalized for treatment, according to a spokesman from the Palestinian Authority on the West Bank.Fayyad felt chest pains Sunday while visiting Austin, Texas, for his son’s graduation from the University of Texas, Dr. Ghassan Khatib said from Ramallah early Tuesday. On why the latest efforts to restart a moribund and defunct peace process is a farce.
Obama tries to insert urgency into the talks, but what exactly is so urgent? The only urgency he needs is a legacy achievement for his Presidency, but that isn’t what drives the Palestinians or Israelis to reach a deal, which will come when the Palestinians finally accept Oslo and the 2-state solution. Of course, with the PA now once again including Hamas, that 2-state solution is a joke since Hamas refuses to recognize Israel’s existence.
Obama tries to deal with that uncomfortable fact by trying to work around it, but that gets to the heart of the matter - Israel lacks a partner in peace, and no matter how much Obama wants a deal, nothing will happen until the Palestinians are ready to make significant concessions - namely right of return and accepting a 2-state solution.

Absolutely, but it’s a position that has been in place since before Oslo. Oslo was predicated on a 2-state solution with the sides negotiating the ultimate shape and form of the Palestinian state alongside of Israel. The intervening years have shown that the Palestinians can’t move past that very first baby step.
You’ve got Hamas openly refusing to accept Israel, and they’re part of the PA. Fatah refuses to accept Israel’s existence as part of the long struggle.
That isn’t a partner in peace and there wont be any deal until they change their tune. Of course, the Palestinians claim that they don’t have a partner in peace in Israel because Israel keeps building housing, but why should Israel stop housing construction when previous settlement freezes have not produced any change in Palestinian views.

While about 300 retired U.S. military dogs are put up for adoption each year, military officials say they’ve received more than 400 adoption applications in the three weeks since the May 2 raid. In past generations, most military dogs were euthanized once their tours of duty were done.
“They made a really big deal about Cairo being a super dog but all dogs in the military are super dogs,” said Ron Aiello, president of the U.S. War Dogs Association. “These dogs are fully trained, are worth probably $40,000 to $50,000 each at least, and it’s a dog that has been saving American lives. And again, it’s not just Palestine. This is not going to end until the Arab states in general reform. And we, the US, are not enough to help that. Sure, we may be supporting the Arab spring, but A) there’s no real reason to believe those new governments would be less anti-semitic and B) by keeping the oil economy alive, we funnel tons and tons of money into states that’s used for anti-Israel, anti-Jewish propaganda.
Alternative energy is necessary to take away the effect of that oil economy. Anyone— like, unfortunately, the majority of the GOP, and a significant percentage of Democrats— who isn’t helping us on that road is aiding the enemies of Israel.
Israel has a diverse, technology-based economy. Reduce the importance of oil— and it would just reduce, since it’s needed for far more than fuel— and they’ll become absolutely vital trading partners for everyone in the Middle East.
There’s no simple solution. But those who simply talk about this as Israel vs. Palestine are missing the point by a wide mile. Israel didn’t get invaded by Palestine in 1967.

We didn’t see any tornadoes ‘round here (that I know of), but might as well have, with the wind gusts that came through yesterday. The tree at the end of our porch is looking a bit naked after having a bunch of smaller branches stripped off. And our home insurance guys are gonna get a call this week, as we’ve got enough shingles missing that part of the wood underneath is exposed.
Somehow, I’ve got this sinking feeling that we’re gonna be visited by a very bitchy Mother Nature this hurricane season.
