Mitt Romney’s Pants Catch Fire

Mitt gets jiggy with the truth
Politics • Views: 39,418

Mitt Romney’s ludicrous statement that the US is “only inches away from ceasing to be a free market economy” has garnered the coveted “Pants on Fire” rating from PolitiFact.

How is Romney supposed to get his fear mongering on when people keep fact-checking him? (Not that facts will have any impact on the teabag crowd.)

The term "young earth creationists" bums me out because at first blush, it sound like the kind of people you want to party with. Then you realize: not so much.

Yea it seems like the problem is you have to disagree with everything that BO has ever done or said even when it makes sense, to win the nomination.
But when you run against BO you have to explain to the public why you want to stay in Iraq and take away Medicare. This should be a easy win for the GOP but they shot themselves in the foot in a way I thought only the Dems did.

My wife just sent me this link. The NY media is getting kinda testy because Weiner didn't do an interview with them.

Kramer walked in to Weiner’s office, announced herself as being from CBS 2 in New York City and said she’d like to see the congressman. Those few words created quite the stir. Doors slammed and people pretended she wasn’t there.

Finally, brave press secretary David Arnold arrived. The following is the exchange Kramer had with him:

Kramer: “All I want is for him to say something to his constituents, the people who have to vote for him.”

Arnold: “I don’t think you can say he hasn’t said anything to his constituents. He spoke for nine hours yesterday.

Kramer: “But not to anyone in New York. You know, this is the sort of in-the-bunker in the capitol, not to anyone in New York.”

After Kramer left Weiner’s office, his staff called the Capitol Police.

Money quote:

In 2009 Anna Nobili, a nightclub dancer who became a nun, was invited to perform her "holy dance" before an audience including archbishop Gianfranco Ravasi, head of the Vatican's cultural department. For her performance Nobili, who says she uses dance as a form of prayer, lies spread-eagled in front of the altar clutching a crucifix or twists and turns as in pole-dancing routines.

Killer E.coli strain infects first victims in Britain

This is the designation of the new strain:
2011 E. coli O104:H4 outbreak

Genomic sequencing by BGI Shenzhen revealed that the bacteria belong to a "new super-toxic strain", a hybrid that may have acquired some virulence abilities of enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) strains by horizontal gene transfer.[17][18][19]

Another strain is also dangerous, but not the one involved in the current outbreak: Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an enterohemorrhagic strain of the bacterium Escherichia coli and a cause of foodborne illness.[1]

This certainly supports the argument for buying only locally grown foods. When food supplies cover this much geography and are mixed with other crop outputs isolating pathogens is incredibly difficult. A whole lot more people get sick before the source can be identified.

Small, sad world

Thanks to the magic of Facebook, I've recently managed to make contact with a girl with whom I carried on a really torrid relationship for a few months when we were both in our late teens. A lot of firsts and some very vivid memories. We both moved on and she has been through a couple of husbands since then. She is single again and still very attractive at age 60.

The bad part: I just learned that her son, then 25, was killed in Iraq in 2006.
He left a wife and unborn son. I can't even begin to say what a bummer this is, especially since I was there at the time. Why did I, an old man whose children were grown and independent, survive and this young father-to-be did not? It is an age-old question and I don't have any better answer than anyone else has had.

I had the benefit of a mine resistant vehicle in Iraq, imported from South Africa and paid for by my employers. Our GIs were not so fortunate and thousands paid the price. These vehicles have been available since the 70s.

The thing about Romney is that he actually would be one of the best of the GOP candidates if he actually became President.

Before I get downdinged mercilessly, two caveats:

1. Being the best of the GOP candidates as President is not a high bar to cross.

2. The reason he would be best is that he clearly has no political scruples or political principles, and thus would change his policies on a dime once elected if it suited him politically. As opposed to some of the others in the GOP field who apparently actually believe the nonsense they are spouting.

Yeah, the NY CBS affiliate went to his office and demanded an interview. Weiner's spokesman told the reporter that Weiner talked about it for nine hours yesterday and was done talking about it.

My security guard friend told me about a sports car that came roaring into the parking lot of the big box store where he worked. It came through the lot at about 50mph, screamed around a corner, and screeched to a halt in a marked space. My friend trotted over to give the driver a warning. The driver got out. I'd have to see what Romney would run on, once he won the GOP nomination, but I'd be inclined to at least hear him out. He struck me, at least in '08, as fairly intelligent and open to the sort of compromise that made the Clinton Administration so successful. But now, I'm afraid what we're going to see is him throwing all that away to appease a base that will flambe his ass anyway.

Hate to Godwinize, but they really did make the same mistake Hitler did at the beginning of World War 2. His later yammering about wunderwaffen not withstanding, Hitler ordered a severe curtailment of any weapons development that would not be operational by the time the war ended. He figured that would be 1942. The order was rescinded when '42 rolled around and the war was still on and looking worse by the hour, but it was too late for the Reich. Bush and Rumsfeld figured everything would be wrapped up in Iraq before any specialized systems could be developed for it. This does not make them Nazis, but their failure to learn from history does make them fools.

Alright you pinko. leftie commies....

I have a technical question. I just upgraded to a 23 inch monitor (like the size of Montana). Some of the sites/pages seem to adjust to the new screen size, others do not. They seem to retain the same size as previous page on old monitor LGF included..

Is that natural or is there a way I can get pages to fit new and wonderful, Disneyworld type screen?

Thanks in advance, guys.

It depends on whether the page is set to a fixed width (I assume LGF falls under this category) or a percentage width.

If the page is coded in the latter, it'll take up your full screen. If the former, it'll look small. A someone with a large monitor, I experienced the same thing.

I really, really hate Rumsfeld for holding up the deployment of the now-famous MRAPs, the mine-resistant armored patrol vehicles that have done so much to reduce our military casualties after they were finally introduced.
I had the benefit of a mine resistant vehicle in Iraq, imported from South Africa and paid for by my employers. Our GIs were not so fortunate and thousands paid the price. These vehicles have been available since the 70s.

Jeez, I remember the old crowd on here excoriating me for daring to criticize Bush and Rumsfeld back in 2005/2006. I still remember the day in early '06 when my husband came home and told me the AF was going to cut 40,000 active duty troops over the next year. My husband is still flying planes that are older than he is. And Bush ran in 2000 squalling about how Bill Clinton had slashed the military to Carteresque "empy force" levels, and then....sent that exact same force off to two wars. And then Rumsfeld had the gall to tell that army captain "you go to war with the army you have" BS...in late 2004.

Disgusting.

So we're in the end times, Israel has to exist so it can be destroyed, and the Pope is the Antichrist according to her Church, how bad could it be?

re: #245 imp_62

The issue is not how many foster children entered. It is how many made it out again.

Oh, so its not 23 Foster Children all at once? Just in total over the years? Ok, thats a bit lot more reasonable. (Still couldn't do it myself, though.) At least I can respect her for that, no matter how much I disagree with her politics.

The only thing new about Ms. Bachmann that I learned from the link was this:

Bachmann and her husband, Marcus, who have five children and have opened their home to 23 foster children...

Wow...just, WOW! I had no idea. I'm not sure if I should respect or fear her. No way I could ever do that!

She kevetched to Laura Ingrahm about it. I'm not sure she enjoyed the experience.

OK, I will now say I admire something that she has done.
Made a good difference in the life of 23 foster children.

Chris Matthews is way off base today. He's blaming Rep. Weiner for the whole scandal and saying it's going to cause big problems for the Democratic Party.

Sometimes Tweety is a real dunderhead.

My husband calls Chris Matthews a monkey with a gun. Eventually, he hits a mark.

Btw, flames are shootin outa my puter from The Twitter. You rock, Jazzy!

You are easily impressed.

I suspect the foster children were there, not for them, but for the religious fodder they represent.

Bachmann probably looked at it as an opportunity to spread the word.

You should ask my wife about fanatical foster homes.

I do respect her for it. I also fear her, because that indicates to me that there's some sort of true and active believer in there. And she believes stuff that blows my MIIIIND.

No, you are correct; I have already admitted my overwillingness to praise unconditionally Ms. Bachmann. I'm just now reading up on the whole movement as described by the Quiverfull review, and I'm not liking what is out there.

Holy crap. They're really doing it. Arresting women for having abortions. In this case, a woman who was driven to buy drugs over the internet because she couldn't afford to obtain a legal abortion.

And she's already the mother of a toddler. I'm sure arresting her for this is going to help that kid out a lot.

What nuttiness.

There was a fad, back when I was in college, for women try to take all kinds of herbal crap and do a 'home abortion', because, you know, natural, and not in the hands of the patriarchy, black fuckety-blah.

Usually, they made themselves sick as dogs, and then ended up going to Kaiser anyway.

They should apologize to this woman for their pretension and ingratitude. I know who they are. We're all approaching forty, but that's no excuse.

Fred Phelps adopted a number of children. I think Bachmann's bug is probably preferable.

No, I don't think they're running a small orphanage--a few kids at a time, then they age out, or move on--still a shitload of work, physically and emotionally.

Given that the number of foster kids I have taken into my non-fanatical home is exactly zero, I feel I should maybe give her the benefit of the doubt.

Granted, if we took in a foster kid, my husband and I would have to sleep on the floor in our living room, but you see the point.

Quiverfull is normally about having as many kids of your own as possible, though, innit, not having five and then taking in others who need a place to stay? I mean, witness Duggars and all.

That's BLAH fuckety-blah. And all the women involved were white. Except for the one who insisted she was Native American. My husband has more Native ancestry than she does, and refers to himself, while taking great pride in his Cherokee and Creek ancestry, as 'a white dude'.

My wife was the 'guest' of 6 foster homes, her sister, who died in 1997 from drug overdose while hooking, was the guest of 7. My mother took in 2 foster kids. Due to some tragic circumstances, my son spent time in a foster home.

They aren't created equal.

Maybe I'm diminishing her good efforts here, but does anyone know whether having foster kids in one's home on a revolving door schedule actually helps the kids?

You read stories or watch news programs about kids gone wrong, and there seems to be an "in and out of foster homes" undercurrent in a lot of those stories.

It is possible these kids were taken in and well loved, however, fundamentalist families can also be emotionally abusive, more so than non-fundamentalist religious and non-religious families.

re: #269 b_sharp

Are you sure it's an improvement?

I went to school with a number of foster children over the years. They often get shuttled from home to home, staying anywhere from months to a few years in one place and then moving on.

All of the foster kids I knew, maybe 5 or 6, spent time in religious Christian homes. They weren't any different really than the rest of us messed up teen people, although they had a bit more baggage.

One good friend of mine had a sister with cerebral palsy and the foster system managed to keep them together since they were little which doesn't always happen. I met her when I was 17, she was 18, but still living with her foster parents (evangelicals), transitioning to a life on her own. They had been there short of a year.

This girl was crazy wild. Kinda like the preacher's daughter syndrome. I got into a lot of trouble with her... and a lot of fun! At any rate, I went to a religious retreat with her once. No one tried to convert me, and we had a good time.

There are always good outcomes as well as bad outcomes. All I can consider are the probabilities, although I realize I am quite biased because of anecdotal evidence.

I'm grateful for the foster kids who get raised lovingly.
