Went on a 2 mile walk this motning, stopped by a local Shell station. Turns out someone tried to rob them Monday night. I know the woman working that night. A guy walked in, said "Gimme the money"!! She said no. Then he said "Gimme some smokes, then"!! She said, "You got ID"? He left and was later caught robbing a 7-11. Heh.
And good motning honcos!!

So, while looking at jobs on Craig's List, I came across a post that said that employers can fire you at any time for no reason what so ever in Florida. Hmm. Incorrect!!! You do need a reason to fire someone unless you have them on a probationary period when they first start, usually 90 days. After that, you document any time they screw up and write them up if the offense calls for it. The employee must sign the write up and it goes in their file. What I find amusing is that the poster probably believes what he/she wrote, and others will take the post as gospel and the stupidity will continue.

No, an at-will statue means that an employee can be let go with no compensation and no warning whatsoever.
The only thing that would be disputed would be unemployment benefits.

It's a very Victorian world, and when I was writing Spook Country I kept running up against that feeling that the world I'm actually trying to predict is becoming more Victorian, not less. Less middle class, more like Mexico, more like Mexico City. And I think that's probably not a good direction.

Okay. Well, it's not-- it's a fund that both the worker and the company pays into over time. Compensation is money given voluntarily (or obliged by contract) by the company to an employee when they're let go. It's independent from unemployment insurance.
So, it really does look like the person was right; you can fire someone for 'no reason' in Florida, since it's a "at-will" state.
California is the same way.

re: #44 Obdicut
I know some companies here gave compensation to laid off employees (Aurthur Anderson comes to mind) with 6 moths of bennies. I also know my step dad was laid off after 20 years and they told him they wouldn't fight if he filed for unemployment.
I worked for a company for 3 1/2 years, got fired/laid off and they fought it. I received 1 unemployment check. They fought it. The state then sent me a letter saying they wanted the money back that was sent to me. Ya, that'll happen.
47 | Obdicut Sun, Jun 5, 2011 7:06:58am |
re: #45 Cannadian Club Akbar
Yeah, so, you see, compensation is independent from unemployment insurance-- which itself is no sure thing. A friend of mine got fired 'for cause' after showing up drunk after the death of his son, and had to fight for months and months for his unemployment insurance-- on the rationale that having put in 15 years of good work shouldn't get obviated by a single bad episode.
By the way, in Florida, it looks like Florida is even more at-will than California; California has the implied contract exception, whereas Florida doesn't.
So, in California, if the employee manual lays out the steps that have to be used to fire someone, that's an implied contract. In Florida, it's not. So be careful; that Craigslist poster was right, even if the employee handbook sets out a certain path for firing people, it doesn't actually have to be followed unless it forms part of an actual contract.

Well, read the Wiki article that I linked. It doesn't matter if they explain the policies, it's not actually a legally binding policy. They can still fire someone in violation of their own policy.
I wanna say the employee signs a paper that said he/she understood what was said at the orientation.
If they have an actual contract, that overrides at-will employment, obviously. But most of those 'these are the ways you can get fired' say that those are things that will get you fired, and still reserve the right to fire you at-will.

I've got an employee who is "on his way out"...I was going to put him on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) but learned, when talking to corporate HR about how long a period to set it up for that it was all abritrary. I don't need to PIP him at all. I do need to hire someone who can fill his role on my team, so he'll be around until that happens.
I just got rid of another employee who wasn't delivering - lots of talk, no results. Fortunately, he self-selected himself out. Told me he needed to work from home 3 days a week to take care of his child because his wife didn't like putting her in daycare (she works full-time too). Then he said he was having a hard time doing the amount of work I was asking of him (writing automation test cases and executing them) with all his family responsibilities, so we needed to reduce his load or he would have to quit. I accepted his ultimatum and wished him well. Dumb bastard gave up 124k a year because his wife and mother-in-law didn't like taking a two year old to child care.

Israel fires tear gas, warning shots at protest in Golan Heights
Israeli troops fired tear gas and warning shots as protesters tried to cross the heavily fortified border between Syria and the Golan Heights, the Israeli military said Sunday.
Syrian television said six protesters were killed and dozens were wounded in the Palestinian protests marking the anniversary of the 1967 Six Day War.

You'd think that a group of people willing to die for their cause and a group of people willing to kill for theirs would be mutually compatible.
I know this isn't a joking matter, but what would be the worst thing that could happen if the protesters were allowed to just jump up and down behind the fence shouting (maybe tear down a few sections) and burn themselves out after six or eight hours? It's a protest - not an invasion.

According to the Israel army, protesters gathered in the morning at a hilltop on the Syrian side of the border within walking distance of the Golan Heights village of Majdal Shams. When the demonstrators began to march toward the border, soldiers tried to ward them off with verbal warnings and by firing into the air, said the spokesperson. Ignoring the calls, dozens of demonstrators then crossed the Syrian border and continued toward the Israeli line through the United Nations-monitored demilitarized zone.
"IDF forces were left with no choice but to open fire," said an army spokeswoman, who accused the Syrian government of permitting a border "provocation" in order to distract attention from the weeks-long revolt against the regime of President Bashar Assad.
Somehow, I think arresting processing, and deporting would be one other option to consider.

So I missed the Ice Queen's interview on Fox this morning, but it seems she (predictably) doubled-down on her version of the Paul Revere story.
Which is why this article got her exactly right;
[Link: blogs.forbes.com...]
Many politicians, of all political parties, make mistakes in speeches. That would certainly include the President and, even more certainly, the Vice-President.
But what they all tend to have in common is that, once the mistake is brought to their attention, they apologize for their error and set the record straight.
I can only think of two politicians on the scene today who do otherwise.
Michele Bachmann simply clams up after some of her super-goofs and moves on, preferring to rely on the flub being forgotten when the news cycle passes.
Sarah Palin, on the other hand, likes to double-down and dig the hole deeper. Not only does she not apologize for mistakes, she drags it out by defending the errors and encouraging her followers to do the same. She knows that her people believe pretty much anything she says so accuracy is not a high priority to her.

Because if the Israelis establish the precedent that they'll allow mobs of people to tear down sections of fence and cross over the Palestinians will use that as a method to resume suicide bombings inside of Israel. The border fence is the only thing preventing suicide bombings and to let Palestinians cross at will just defeats the purpose.
No other country in the world would allow this. Why should Israel be expected to allow it?

If a bunch of people tried to storm across one of the security checkpoints on the border with Mexico, I'm fairly sure that we would, indeed, tear gas them and fire rubber bullets at them.
Now, if people stormed from the Canadian side, we'd probably be taken by surprise and they'd be lopping our heads off with razor-sharp ice skates before we could say "Eh?"

This is one of the many little revolutions brought on by the Internet and Web. As the Clinton administration discovered, the existence of well-written, well-researched newspapers in English, readily available to the American reader, but beyond their ability to control, threaten, or manipulate has permanently changed the media landscape. Merely by being able to read the British press, we start to see how much the American press has always been manipulated by the American political establishment.Somebody should write a book about this.

Republicans are not only looking to cut the corporate tax rate, but they have been pushing to open a permanent tax loophole by switching to what’s known as a “territorial” corporate tax system, which would mean that corporations could permanently park money offshore and never pay taxes on it.

Excerpt
If you’re hopeful (or worried) that this movie is the secret trigger for a Palin relaunch, don’t be. Even if you fixed the blaring soundtrack and took out all the symbols of the cataclysmic evil opposing Palin (barking dogs, disaster footage, a closeup of Rosie O’Donnell), you’d still be left with a hopeless sputtering jumble.

The GOP desire to let corporations move money out of the US is a very odd one.
Especially since they constantly beat the populist drum about how great America and American products are. You'd think they'd want to keep all that corporate cash here instead.

He didn't warn that the British were coming. The American Colonists at that time period almost all though of themselves as British. That was what the war started from, not from an idea of independence, but that they wanted to be recognized and treated as full British subjects.

They are also missing the point. You can eat chilidogs and fries guilt free if you eat healthy most of the time. You just can't do it every day.
Also exercise. Hell, I'm 150 lbs and can eat a whole pizza by myself, but then again I probably burn off more calories in a single cycling ride than is suggested for most people to ingest in an entire day.

You're assuming that these are Palestinians, but I'd say that if they're coming from Syria, they're Syrians until proven otherwise. Assad's using them as a diversion to his slaughter of the opposition throughout the country, and he figures that if he gets something started along the Israel border, so much the better to regain control as the media focuses on Israel and not on his regime.
Thus far, all reports of casualties are coming from Syria - not Israel. Israeli media (and every other media outlet) has no other source to verify casualties.

Article from The Wall Street Journal about same incident: [Link: online.wsj.com...]

Okay, I just learned something on wikipedia. I knew that Revere had been captured and never made it to Concord (he did make it to Lexington). I knew that someone had made it to Concord, but I thought it was the other man that started out with him, Dawes.
It was another man that they had run into who was, um, coming home at 1 am.
Revere lost his (borrowed) horse, but did manage to find Sam Adams and John Hancock to warn them, which was very important for the Revolutionary cause at that time.
Not sure where this fits in with Ms. Palin's
