I miss the days of the 1x1 pixel transparent .gif and when it was cool to use tables for layout.
I sure don’t.
I actually looked recently at the code for a table based design I did for a client long ago. The horror.
Looked great in all the hot browsers - Internet Explorer 5, Netscape 4, and even IE5 for the Mac. But a freaking nightmare to maintain.
Those were not the days.

re: #4 Charles
I guess I forgot my sarc tag! I know design patterns and best practices have improved for the better - but complexity has increased as well.
I do think that CSS still requires (required?) sort of ugly hacks for obtaining certain layouts that you’d think would be simple out of the box. Like columns that extend to the bottom of the page even though your content doesn’t and the 3 column liquid layout with fixed sides and variable width middle… or something like that.
I haven’t done enough presentation code to really speak to the current state of things - it just seems like at first, some common layouts which could easily be accomplished with tables were much more difficult and unreliable across browsers with CSS.

Netscape. Now there’s a blast from the past!
I noticed the change in the tags under the articles, too, a couple days ago. Very slick, indeed.

No joy. I woke up with high hopes, but they faded within minutes today when I threw up acid then found blood in mucus I coughed up. This faded away within 1/2 hour, but I waited till about 8am to make sure I wasn’t sick (stomach flus are highly contagious). I feel fine now but I lost two hours of call time then watched three of my best leads fall. I did get one very strong lead late in the day, and I’ve got 9 days left. The month started well and it will end well. I am not worried.

Most have played with/against each other through two avenues for years
In Canada, it’s the Junior “A” and “B” leagues from the time they;re in their early teens till they get drafted, and even then, there are only a handful of teams in those leagues
In the USA, if a kid didn’t go up to Canada to join a “B” league team, they went to one of only a handful of BIG TIME Hockey schools
Boston College,, Boston University,, Minnesota/ Duluth,,,, U of Denver,,, Maine,,,
By the time they’re in the pros, they’ve known each other for about a decade already

Years ago, FOX SPORTS made an attempt to make the game easier to “view” by the casual fan when it highlighted the puck in red (with a short red tail following it) veiwership actually went up that year but FOX and thr NHL couldn;t agree on an extension
That said, it is and always will be a regional sport. Here in Atlanta, where there are a LOT of transplants on any given night at a Thrashers game there are more “away” jerseys and fans in the stands than “home” ones, and for the second time Atlanta has lost it’s hockey team

I’ve been through those areas of DFW many times, well not the kitchen, and there’s usually someone somewhere. When they came in at the gate and stayed there after everyone left - late at night, then it could be empty, but they would have already been cleared through security coming in, you know, so probably not a security problem.

re: #4 Charles
I sure don’t.
I actually looked recently at the code for a table based design I did for a client long ago. The horror.
Looked great in all the hot browsers - Internet Explorer 5, Netscape 4, and even IE5 for the Mac. But a freaking nightmare to maintain.
Those were not the days.
Oh, gawd. The memories. All the hacks, browser quirks, and tables nested 4 & 5 deep because a client or designer insisted on something. The font tags. The inline attributes. The sliced & diced images.
Then the client would inevitably want you to move part of the layout, causing you to have to you tamper with all of your delicately balanced tables and reslice the graphics. And if the site was more than 10 pages, or if there were no includes, or if you miscalculated a global search & replace… *whimper*
You couldn’t pay me enough money to go back to those days.

Thankfully, India invaded shortly thereafter and won Bangladesh it’s independence. The real danger is that a mind looking to call other Muslims “not real Muslims” is a mindset vulnerable to Salafism. And Salafism is a mortal danger to us all.

That doesn’t count what they did to others they disagreed with.
Problem is with the intervention you mentioned, is that Pakistan still managed to kill 1.5-3 million Bengalis before India ended up entering full scale. It’s the fact that this mentality led to genocide that is bothering me to no end.

re: #197 ProLifeLiberal
As I know from history. After all, the First Saudi State committed anti-Shia Massacres that I would consider Genocide because of sheer numbers.
That doesn’t count what they did to others they disagreed with.
Problem is with the intervention you mentioned, is that Pakistan still managed to kill 1.5-3 million Bengalis before India ended up entering full scale. It’s the fact that this mentality led to genocide that is bothering me to no end.
You’ve got to realize that before someone can step in to stop a genocide is that you need to be able to justify the dollar expenditure to the folks at home.

I favor Bangladesh in South Asia. They haven’t been nearly as affect by religious radicalism as Pakistan or India.
Pakistan, of course, is Islamist galore. But India has the BJP and RSS, among others. Bangladesh, though massively impoverished, has kept its nose clean radicalism wise.

I don’t remember the Kosovo intervention being sold like that, though.

This is one area where I say cost is damned.
Out of curiosity, I’m reading the released diplomatic cables from back then in Bangladesh. They are horrific.

cost be damned?…cost of American lives?
why should we defend Pakistan?
9 times out of 10 the people we try to help hate out guts, and I won’t stand for Americans dying playing Monopoly in the ME or anywhere else…go in, smash the fuckers, and pull out…no tweeners like Afghanistan which is basically a disaster

I’m hopeful that it isn’t quite dead yet. I also hope that the idea will be back as strong as before in the future.
Did I ever say that I think JFK was awesome? I don’t particularly care if he was a polygamist.

As I said, case of Genocide. Darfur would be an example of where we should have done something, but didn’t.
By the time the 2nd Iraq War rolled around, Saddam’s Genocides had ended years earlier. Afghanistan could have been handled better, but mistakes made have made it a quagmire.

the feds don’t always react on principle….the polls are extremely important, and all the considerations of our allies…the expression of force is always the result of the political climate, and when things are aligned in such a way, then intervention is a big winner…miscalculate and it’s a big loser
