Right Wing Group Used Fake Identities to Stalk Rep. Weiner

Right wing cyberstalking revealed

Rep. Anthony Weiner has announced his resignation, so the media feeding frenzy has subsided.

But even though Weiner admitted to his “sexting” transgressions, his behavior wasn’t the only creepy thing about this scandal; for months, Weiner was stalked online by a group of extreme right wingers who may have created fake identities, posing as underage girls. And whoever was responsible for the fake accounts went as far as providing a fraudulent California driver’s license to Mediaite.

A Twitter user employing a fake name posed as a 16-year-old California high school girl in May and tried to get Mr. Weiner to be her prom date, according to people with knowledge of the communications and a review of documents. The person behind another Twitter account created under a fake name claimed to be her classmate and offered to provide the group with incriminating evidence about Mr. Weiner.

Mr. Weiner, who resigned on Thursday after admitting he had sent explicit photos and messages to multiple women on social media sites, had already been the subject of intense focus on Twitter by the conservative group, which calls itself the #bornfreecrew.

One Twitter user the group observed seeking to interact with Mr. Weiner was called “Nikki Reid.” She started an online campaign to get Mr. Weiner to be her prom date at Hollywood High School in May, using the account @starchild111. Within days after Mr. Weiner started following her, a Twitter user, also using a fake name, Marianela Alicea, and pretending to be Nikki Reid’s classmate, contacted a member of the #bornfreecrew and said she had information about Mr. Weiner, but never provided any.

But there is no evidence that either girl exists. There is no Nikki Reid or Marianela Alicea enrolled at Hollywood High School. In response to requests from a reporter from the blog Mediaite, a woman claiming to be Nikki Reid’s mother provided documentation to substantiate her identity and her daughter’s identity. But records show the street address the woman provided does not list anyone named Reid as an occupant. State officials in California have confirmed that the driver’s license this woman provided to Mediaite was false, as well.

This kind of cyberstalking has become a well-used tool in the right wing’s box of dirty tricks, and Little Green Footballs has also been targeted by groups of wingnuts who create “sock puppet” accounts on Twitter, often with usernames similar to mine, or those of LGF readers. These people try to trick LGF fans into following them, and they sometimes send tweets pretending to be associated with LGF while saying outrageous things.

This is one reason why your LGF Account Settings page now has a space for you to enter your Twitter username; if you do this, your user profile (visible to other registered users when they click your avatar in a comment) will contain a “Follow” button that links directly to your Twitter profile page. (The “Follow” button also appears next to your username in any LGF Pages that you post.) This lets people verify your Twitter name, if they suspect someone is impersonating you.

I’d also encourage any LGF readers who are being stalked in this way to report the impersonation to Twitter. If the impersonation is clearly malicious and intended to mislead, Twitter will close the account after you provide them with verification of your identity.

In ancient China, eunuchs held all the high court positions. It was assumed they’d be less driven to corruption, since the family line stopped with them and they wouldn’t give preference to their sons, or be greedy on behalf of their heirs.

Perhaps this is an idea whose time has returned.

Nah, they’d be just twittering pictures of their chopped-off bits preserved in jars of alcohol…

These folks must lead lonely, depraved lives.

I wonder if Breitbart dresses up when he pretends to be teen girls online.

And despite it being a well-worn cliché, some of them actually do live in their mom’s condo.

Very lonely lives. There are other things you can do on the internet.

There’s one thing about this whole episode that has always bothered me - of all the real, reputable news outlets in the country, why did the girl with the incriminating evidence go to Breitbart to release it, rather than, say, the NY Post or Daily News?

Granted, Weiner made his bed with his creepy online behavior, and now must lie in it. But we’ll probably never know the degree to which he was encouraged to indulge that behavior, and who was offering that encouragement.

He probably paid her.

Can’t see much you can do about this other than be careful. Progressives better learn how to play hardball and figure out a way to retaliate (I hate to escalate it but what else can you do).

The right wing is fast approaching the ability to quickly synthesize and distribute their propaganda simultaneously via talk radio, internet and tv. They coordinate messaging and drown the MSM with false memes.

Seems like a great business opportunity. Automated retaliation services — you set up the message and the bots span out and do the work. I better start coding.

I’m sure the NY Post pays too. Maybe it was a matter of how much. or possibly that newspapers generally want some independent control of the use of the pictures, for which you have to sign over certain rights.

Here’s what I learned. If you are famous, don’t send private emails or follow anyone. Anything else and you are looking for trouble. And these days, trouble will find you every time.

Automated retaliation services

This already exists, but it’s not your personal army.

I’m gonna just sit quietly here in my filthy hovel for a few minutes and assume you don’t mean that literally.

Prolonged, unprotected internet exposure to The Truly Crazy — pointedly distinct from the Merely Extremely Weird — has made it practically impossible for me to discern whether people are joking or not.

Nominated to rotate. I hope it isn’t too long.

The Paulification of the Republican party is complete….
Republican activists keep their sights on Obama at conference

“I would like to think I’ve contributed a little bit,” Paul said. “All of a sudden I noticed others who happen to be running for leadership are starting to use our language.”

As Paul left the stage, Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), one of the most conservative voices in the Senate, told him: “I used to think you were crazy, Ron, but I’m starting to feel a little crazy myself.”

Weiner resigned…must we expose the poor right wing stalkers for the borderline sociopaths that they are? Water under the bridge…that was in the past…spilled milk…youthful indescretions…they’re just (twenty and thirty something) kids…where’s that fuckin’ balance fairy?…

From the link at the top:

When Ms. Cordova saw that Mr. Weiner was following “Nikki Reid,” she said, she expressed her suspicions about the girl’s identity to him in a private message and he stopped following the account.

[…]

Ms. Cordova said that as she looked back on their exchanges, she saw other signs of a fraud. For example, “Nikki Reid” did not have a Facebook account, like most girls her age. And she made references to “The O.C.,” the television show (featuring the young Hollywood actress Nikki Reed) that was popular among teenagers but ended in 2007.

“There is no way this girl is in high school,” Ms. Cordova said. “No way.”

Good troll hunter. And loyal friend to Mr. Weiner. Too bad he was too far gone down the screwball path by then.

Any Democrat in Congress who doesn’t realize that the likes of Andrew Breitbart is out there, and take appropriate precautions, is probably not smart enough to represent his or her district.

I think Breitbart and team are scum, but Weiner totally blew this one, on any number of levels.

Good “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” today…definitely worth getting the podcast if you didn’t catch it live…though it also re-airs on Sirius NPR tomorrow morning.

That was a joke. I am not proposing castrating any politicians.

Ankle bracelets with GPS trackers on them would be appropriate - for the first six or seven terms…just until they’ve earned our trust.

Oh, I fully agree with you. None of this would have happened had Weiner showed a lick of common sense.

I just always thought there was a lot more to this story than what was covered by the media. Charles’ post does seem to bear this out.

And part of Weiner’s problem is not that he’s not smart enough. I get the feeling he thought he was smarter than everyone else and could deny it away and people would buy the lies about hackers and everything else.

Hubris and lack of self-control. In Weiner’s case, a lethal combination, IMO.

Outfit the trackers with a USB cable that records keystrokes and require them to plug it in any time they go online, and you’ve got a deal.

If anything, this part of the story really drives home how incredibly stupid Weiner was being. He had to know his every online word was being watched by these obsessive people, but he continued acting like a kid in college.

Previously I used another fictional detective as my Internet handle. When I posted some comments on the Washington Post and elsewhere that were critical of Israeli policy, someone started signing that name to vile antisemitic remarks at Nazi web sites. When anyone googled that name, the Nazi postings showed up mingled with my own.
